Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Other details about The Descent Part 2 were scant prior to its 2009 release, but after it was finally seen,...

Film: ‘The Descent: Part 2′; Director: Jon Harris; Cast: Shauna Macdonald, Krysten Cummings, Douglas Hodge, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Michael J. Reynolds; Rating: **1/2
Horror films are not just about deadly monsters that spring up in the dark and serve you a good chill. It’s about being helpless in a situation that you find yourself in and struggle hard to survive. And it is this helplessness that makes the genre of horror so popular.
‘The Descent’ in 2005 added something more — the helplessness of the fairer sex as an all girls team gets stranded amidst a bunch of monsters.
The sequel, tries to do that, but ends up being a poor remake of a decent first film.

Chicago – Why does every successful horror film need a sequel? If they’re big enough, they usually come out theatrically, but there’s a whole sub-genre of straight-to-video follow-ups to horror hits, the latest being the truly bad “The Descent: Part 2,” a film that merely serves to enhance the reputation of the original by comparison.
DVD Rating: 1.0/5.0
The best thing about “The Descent: Part 2” is the set-up. It’s all downhill from there. Haven’t you ever wondered about the aftermath of a horror movie? The camera usually fades to black when the villain is killed or the hero is safe, but there’s clearly going to be a lot of questions and clean-up. What happens next is a common genre question and “The Descent: Part 2” cleverly picks up immediately after the end of Neil Marshall’s beloved film.

Arriving on DVD April 27th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is The Descent: Part 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Neil Marshall's creature feature that will continue the story of Sarah. "The Descent 2 picks up immediately after the events depicted in The Descent. Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Sceptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah's psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines (Gavan OHerlihy) doesnt waste time. Along with his partner Rios (Krysten Cummings), and their cave rescue team Dan (Douglas Hodge), Greg (Joshua Dallas), and Cath (Anna Skellern), Vaines forces Sarah back into the caves to help the rescuers find her friends."...

The boys at Bloody-Disgusting have your first look at a new clip from “The Descent 2″, a sequel to Neil Marshall’s 2007 splatterfest “The Descent”. For the sequel, former special effects man Jon Harris takes over the directorial reins while Marshall looks on from the sidelines. It looks like a direct sequel to the first movie, with some of the original cast back for more cave-dwelling creature action. Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Sceptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah’s psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines (Gavan O’Herlihy) doesn’t waste time. In 2005 Neil Marshall’s imagine-if-Alien-were-set-in-a-cave feature The Descent scared the living daylights out of cinemagoers worldwide. Lacking the bawdy humour of his werewolf masterpiece Dog Soldiers, it was nevertheless an honest to goodness horror film that pulled no punches and left no survivors. Unless you watched the American cut.
The folk who decided to make The Descent: Part 2 clearly fall into the latter camp as they have picked up just before we left off with Sarah being kind of…alive. For those among you who have never seen The Descent there is a brief recap after the jump:

Things go bump in the dark
Some of the girls die
Some of the girls kill some of the creatures
All of the girls die

A darkly lit French movie poster has been released for the Descent 2 along with several other photos from the film. To be shown in theatres in 2010 The Descent 2 stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, and Krysten Cummings as a group of cave explorers who return to a mysterious cave system. As well, as this international poster there are several others movie stills from the film available below and through the official website of the film.
A synopsis for The Descent 2 here:
"Dazed, bloddied and speechless with trauma, Sarah Carter emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where the events of The Descent took place. Local Sheriff Redmond Vaines forces her back underground to help the rescue team which is desperately searching for her five missing girlfriends.
As the team moves deeper into the caves, Sarah's flashes of fractured memory intensify and she begins to realise the full horror of the would-be rescue mission.

We were lucky enough to see Descent Part 2 at the World Premiere during Frightfest a month or so ago. It’s not out until 4th December so we’ve still got an age before we can post our review but keep your eyes peeled.
The Descent Part 2 stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Krysten Cummings, Anna Skellern, Gavan O’Herlihy (Seven Days of Grace), Joshua Dallas (Ghost Machine, “Doctor Who”) and Douglas Hodge (Mansfield Park).
In the meantime, we have this new Japanese poster (click it to enlarge) which basically sums up the film in one image. It has a lady looking scared, a monster’s face and she’s in a pothole. What else could you want?!
If you want to read our report from the premiere you can check it out here and you can check out the trailer here.

Here at FilmShaft we love our trailers, hell we even have an entire section dedicated to them – little slices of cinematic thrills that should (hopefully) allude to the greatness of the whole. So naturally when we were sent the trailer for The Descent: Part 2 how could we resist?
The original you’ll remember, had people going crazy. An original plot in the horror genre is not something we see very often (more on that in a later article) so when audiences were plunged into the damp, claustrophobic caves of 2005’s The Descent, their fear was almost tangible.
Now with filmmakers are set to drag us back into the subterranean horror with The Descent: Part 2 the question is – are there any more surprises left?

According to this new trailer, 'Critics called Descent, the most terrifying monster movie since Alien'. The caption then says 'The Daily Star' in very small letters. I'm not sure the 'Daily Star' speak for all film critics but they got their name on a trailer so good for them! The original Descent for me was a good movie in that it kept me entertained for the 99 minutes in which it ran and had a storyline that we'd not seen before - something which is becoming increasingly rare.

Here’s your first real look at The Descent: Part 2, the upcoming sequel to Neil Marshall’s 2006 horror flick. Marshall, who also helmed Dog Soldiers and Doomsday, is executive producing the sequel while directing duties have gone to Jon Harris. The project is Harris’ feature debut. He’s worked in the industry for over ten years as an editor on films like Snatch, Ripley's Game, Layer Cake, Stardust and the first Descent. The flick picks up right after the first, with Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) emerging alone from the Appalachian cave system where she encountered unspeakable terrors. Unable to plausibly explain to the authorities what happened - or why she's covered in her friends' blood - Sarah is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her five missing companions. Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Krysten Cummings, Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern and Douglas Hodge also star.

Two crawlers lounge idly on a sofa wrapped in matching dressing gowns. One glances at a newspaper while the other sits lost in thought. Fear not readers, Mike Leigh is not here directing The Descent 2 as some kind of kitchen sink drama centred around a family of crawlers, I've merely stumbled across the crawler workshop where the pair are waiting to be called onto set - but it's a surreal sight nonetheless.
I've been invited to spend a day at Ealing Studios where filming on the sequel to Neil Marshall's acclaimed British horror has entered its penultimate week. For those of you that haven’t seen the original (and where have you been hiding?), The Descent followed a group of six female adrenaline-junkies who go spelunking – that’s caving to you and me - and end up in a whole world of trouble when they fall foul of a bunch of naked ghouls,...
