[[tmz:video id="0_3rsdrywt"]] Roy Halladay was honored by teammates, family and friends at a memorial service in Florida on Tuesday ... remembering the star pitcher for his accomplishments both on and off the field. Major League Baseball has lost a beloved icon and the sports world is in mourning over the untimely death of legendary pitcher Roy "Doc" Halladay.
The celebrated athlete died Tuesday after he crashed his plane into the Gulf of Mexico near Holiday, Florida.
Following the news of the tragedy, nearly everyone who had ever played alongside the pitcher -- or against him -- took to social media to share their memories, post tributes, and send condolences to Halladay's widow, Brandy, and their two sons, Ryan and Braden.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter -- one of Halladay's former teammates when they both played for the Toronto Blue Jays and a close friend -- released a statement on his passing.
"We grew up together. Went through good and bad times together. He was an amazing pitcher, competitor, teammate and friend," Carpenter shared. "I have so many memories with him and his family. I will miss him...

If you grew up loving baseball, the only thing better than Opening Day is Opening Day with your young son. Last year, my six-year-old was bitten by the baseball bug. He played organized tee ball for the first time, spent hours in the backyard imaging game-winning home runs, and celebrated every triple by his favorite player, Jose Reyes. Every morning, he checked the sports section to see if our Mets had miraculously leapfrogged two teams in the standings, and practically every night, he’d ask what their chances were of making the World Serious, as he calls it. “Not good,...

The trailers are starting to make the rounds for the digested, regurgitated and over-incubated adaptation of Michael Lewis' best-selling baseball novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Brad Pitt pushed for a film version of the novel, which highlights the change in direction of the Oakland Athletics under General Manager Billy Beane. The San Francisco Bay Area franchise was one of the highest spending clubs in the early parts of the 90s, but after owner Walter Haas died in 1995, the new ownership group slashed payroll and cut operating costs (apparently this sort of behavior isn't limited to the New York Knights or Charlie Sheen's Cleveland Indians).
Beane's strategies expanded upon statistical analysis with objective studies and regressions analysis and all sorts of mathematical approaches, embracing the field of "Sabermetrics". By developing a different idea about how baseball games were won, and a different idea about which...

In the weeks leading up to the release of "Modern Warfare 2," Activision and Infinity Ward released a promotional video featuring Phillies pitcher, Cole Hamels, and a pretty inappropriate slur. Activision reacted swiftly by taking the video down and apologizing, but the damage was done.
Seems that EA and Dice, makers of "Battlefield: Bad Company 2," aren't going to let such a gaffe go by without taking the opportunity to bash their competitor a little bit, so they released their own video starring Yankees pitcher, Cc Sabathia. Both videos discourage the use of random grenade tossing, but EA's cleverly avoids offending large portions of the gaming community.
There is some mild profanity, though, so you'll have to check out the video on the official Battlefield blog.
It's not the first time "Battlefield: Band Company 2" has stuck it to "Modern Wafare 2." Peppered throughout the game's campaign are subtle digs to Activision's title, with...

Last week, Jet and Cord looked unbeatable.
This week? Let's just say our opinion hasn't changed much.
The entire leg seemed tailor-made for the cowboys, something Carol and Brandi complained about at the roadblock. While it certainly isn't 100% fair, neither is life, Brandi. Jet and Cord appropriately pointed out that they are not complaining (you get the sense these two have complained about something maybe once in their life) about how unfair it is that Carol and Brandi speak Spanish, but they do not.
Considering that the while race has been in Spanish-speaking countries so far, that’s a far bigger advantage than Jet and Cord running into a steer roping challenge on one leg. Imagine, however, if the detour involved riding real horses instead of the practice one. Jet and Cord might have been a half of a day ahead of the other teams.

Since The Week in Sports began as a feature on AfterElton.com we've kept our queer eye on the photo wires to bring you a weekly compilation of the most arresting images of male athleticisim from around the world.
2009 is coming to a close, so in this final installment we thought we'd look back and gather together the best of the best. Hence The Year in Sports. (Well, technicaly the half-year in sports, since we only started this feature in July.)
Now we know not every football fan is also a tennis fan, and some rugby fanatics cannot abide men's gymnastics. So this time out we've helpfully sorted the photos by category. You can jump to whatever photo collection you want by the table of contents below. Oh, and in addition to the major sports, we've got a few special photo categories that we hope you'll enjoy!

Forget home runs, some of the baseball stars slugging it out in this year's World Series are just worth taking home! Two of the Philadelphia Phillies hotties turning heads this season are 30-year-old Chase Utley at second base and pitcher Cole Hamels, 25. Sorry, ladies, they both may be easy on the eyes, but they're spoken for. Utley married college sweetheart (and fellow animal lover) Jennifer Cooper in 2007. He hails from California and comes up to bat to the song "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. Hamels's wife may be familiar to Survivor fans - Heidi Strobel was a contestant on the sixth season of the reality show.

Assuming the wet, frosty weather in New York cooperates, the 2009 World Series will kick off tonight at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees (featuring perennial All-Stars Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez) will square off against the Philadelphia Phillies (who are the defending champs) in a best-of-seven series that will decide who the best team in baseball is. Unlike in past years, these two teams match up relatively evenly, as they both have explosive lineups, solid starting pitching and deep bullpens. According to most online betting parlors, the Yankees are the slight favorite, though it's really anybody's Series.
But that doesn't mean we can't handicap the teams anyway, and there's really only one way to really decide which squad will be truly dominant: Analyzing the at-bat music for key players on either side. A relatively new tradition at ballparks, just about every player in Major League Baseball has a song (or...

It’s not every day that an expectant father receives a police escort to the hospital, but that’s what happened last Thursday for Cole Hamels. The 25-year-old Philadelphia Phillies pitcher learned during Game 2 of the National League Division Series matchup with the Colorado Rockies that wife Heidi Strobel had gone into labor, and his busy day got even busier.
After quickly showering at the ballpark, Cole — who was arrested after a bar fight in Clearwater, Fla. in 2005 — hopped in a squad car for the ride to Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia. “That was the best cop...

It’s a boy for Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels and wife Heidi Strobel, a Survivor: The Amazon alum.
The couple welcomed Caleb Michael Hamels at 9 a.m. on Friday, mere hours after Cole served as the starting pitcher in Game 2 of the Phillies National League Division Series with the Colorado Rockies.
Heidi reportedly went into labor around 4 p.m. on Thursday — during the game itself — but told team officials not to alert Cole until his day on the mound was done. Cole was pulled in the bottom half of the fifth inning in favor of a pinch hitter,...

We thought we'd butch it up around here today and pull together some of the week's most interesting images from the world of sports.
There were a lot to choose from. My personal favorite might just be Ricky Berens' wardrobe malfunction at the World Swimming Championships in Rome (pictured above), but there are a number of other visual delights — including a few pics from the 2009 Outgames in Copenhagen! Enjoy.
