The Producer's Guild of America has deemed "Circumstance" a 'foreign language film,' making it therefore not eligible for their awards. Producer Karin Chien isn't happy. In an open letter to the media, Chien condemns the Guild for labelling her film a 'foreign film,' despite the fact that it was financed primarily in the U.S. and competed in the U.S. section of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival (where it won the Audience Award). According to the PGA Rules, only English language films qualify for awards consideration. Read her letter below: Recently, a film I produced with Melissa Lee and Maryam Keshavarz, Circumstance, was submitted for the Producer’s Guild of America’s awards consideration. Circumstance is a hard film to categorize: it’s a story of teenage love and personal freedom set in Iran, filmed in Beirut, edited in Chile, finished in France, and financed primarily by U.

An Open Letter to the Producers Guild of America.
Recently, a film I produced with Melissa Lee and Maryam Keshavarz, Circumstance, was submitted for the Producer’s Guild of America’s awards consideration. Circumstance is a hard film to categorize: it’s a story of teenage love and personal freedom set in Iran, filmed in Beirut, edited in Chile, finished in France, and financed primarily by U.S. sources. And the film is in Farsi. We knew we were a long shot to be nominated, but we were still excited by the prospect. Producing is often thankless and invisible work, and awards that solely recognize a producer’s contribution are few and far between.

It’s that time of year for various organizations to recognize some of the best films of 2011. Some of these awards are lesser known, but the Film Independent Spirit Awards, is not one of them. Having seen Win Win the other day, I really hope that Tom McCarthy wins the award for Best Screenplay, but it will be hard to take the win, especially with the momentum that The Descendants and The Artist are having. It's an award-based morning as not only were the Gotham Awards handed out last night, the New York Film Critics are in the middle of handing out their awards right now (that list is coming shortly) and now the nominations for Film Independent's 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were announced as Michael Hazanavicius' The Artist and Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter led the pack with five nominations each. The two leaders, however, were followed closely by Beginners, The Descendants, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Drive with four. Of those six, only Martha Marcy May Marlene wasn't nominated for Best Feature as it was replaced by 50/50, which ended up with three nominations. Of the films nominated for Best Feature, my gut tells me it's a battle between The Artist and The Descendants and this just may end up being the first sign as to which of those two may end up being the Oscar favorite.

Exclusive: In its second Sundance deal today, Participant Media has acquired North American rights to Circumstance, a tale of forbidden love in Iran, written and directed by Maryam Keshavarz. Deal is worth mid to high six figures. The picture, which premiered Saturday, is Farsi language with English subtitles. Participant Media president Ricky Strauss sealed the deal and is now in talks with several distributors on a film that was produced by Keshavarz, Karin Chien and Melissa M. Deadline readers might recall Keshavarz was one of the first filmmakers to speak out against the imprisonment of Iranian filmmakers Jafar Panahi and Muhammad Rasoulof when they were issued draconian 6-year prison sentences and banned from making films for two decades by the oppressive regime there. #53. Circumstance - Maryam Keshavarz I could have sworn that Maryam Keshavarz's Circumstance had had a world preem at Locarno, but no - it'll be ready for the 2011 film festival season. Look for the Sundance Institute’s 2007 Screenwriters Lab participant to showcase her feature debut in Park City - specifically in the World Dramatic Comp. Then it could easily go to Rotterdam, where it received the Hubert Bals Fund or Berlin where the film/filmmaker was part of the Talent Campus. This tells the story of how a single event – a soldier’s death at the Iran/Iraq border – irrevocably connects the lives of four people across continents. Through the telling of a love triangle between three teenagers, Circumstance explores the multifaceted and destructive repression that continues to confront Iran's new generation. * Producers: Karin Chien (The Motel), Antonin Dedet and Melissa M.
