Kelli Giddish leaving as Amanda Rollins on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Pic credit: NBC
Kelli Giddish’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit exit may not have been her choice after all.
Just days after the actress’ stunning announcement she was leaving the series, a Variety report indicates the decision to write out Amanda Rollins was actually made by higher-ups within NBC.
Giddish leaving the series after 12 seasons was a surprise with little to indicate she wanted to leave the role she clearly enjoyed.
According to the report, the issues involved salary disputes and a decision to “freshen up” the series.
Mariska Hargitay reportedly fought to keep Giddish on alongside at least one producer, but the decision was out of the hands of both her and new showrunner David Graziano.
It throws new light on the sudden departure as it now appears writing out Rollins was not the actress’ choice but forced on her.

Now that's how to set up a season-ending cliffhanger!
Fans are divided over Barba's declaration of love at the end of Law & Order Season 23 Episode 22, quickly separating into Team Barba, Team Stabler, and Team Nobody. That'll keep people talking all summer, but it's far from the only thing we're looking forward to as the iconic series heads into its record-breaking 24th season.
Svu has always put victims front and center. For many years, Benson has been the fantasy cop that many real-life survivors wished they could cross paths with.
Some fans have been unhappy with the series's direction recently, though.
While Svu has always included some of the cops' personal lives in the story (the Stabler family always had some drama going on during the first 12 seasons!), it seems to have veered a bit off course lately.
It's focused too much on the personal and not showing the same...

Octavio Pisano’s character Detective Joe Velasco crosses over to “Law & Order: Organized Crime” on Thursday’s episode, “The Lost One,” where he teams up with Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) and tech whiz Jet Slootmaeker (Ainsley Seiger) to find a kidnapped girl.
While Velasco, who only joined the Svu squad this season, took a while to earn the approval of veteran cop Fin Tutuola (Ice-t), when Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) recommends him for the assignment, Stabler is impressed with his work.
“They actually get along great,” Pisano told TheWrap of Stabler and Velasco’s working relationship. “They both have backgrounds in organized crime. He’s been in that world before, so I think Stabler saw that and appreciated it.”
As for working with Seiger, who is also fairly new to the “Law & Order” universe, Pisano said, “She’s fantastic. I haven’t seen much of her work until I...

When Law & Order: Svu gets underway in the fall, it will be under new leadership.
Warren Leight confirmed Tuesday that he would be stepping away from the veteran NBC drama.
“The final day of shooting is always bittersweet,” he wrote on Twitter.
“Today was a little more than that. As some of you have already figured out, I am stepping down at the end of #SVU23."
"The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break.”
Leight initially worked as showrunner from seasons 13 to 17 and returned for Law & Order: Svu Season 21.
“At least once a week this year a brick came thru the window,” Leight added.
“This person quarantined, that location lost, another show fell behind and our guest star was no longer available."
"Each time casting, camera, design, wardrobe, locations, h/mu, props, drivers came up with a save.

“The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break,” Leight wrote on Twitter in a lengthy thread. (You can read it below)

A familiar face will be returning to Law & Order: Svu. Demore Barnes, who portrayed Deputy Chief Christian Garland in the NBC procedural, will return to reprise the role in an upcoming episode, Deadline has confirmed.
Garland joined the series in the 21st season as a recurring and was promoted to series regular in Season 22. He exited the series in the second half of the Season 23 premiere, “Never Turn Your Back On Them”. Barnes’ Garland had left his job after disagreeing with higher-ups about the way police misconduct was being handled in a controversial case.
Barnes was recently spotted filming scenes in NYC for the drama series, leading to questions about his return, first reported by Give Me My Remote. He will appear in the April 28th episode.
At the time of his departure, Barnes said he was in the dark about why his character had been written out of the show.

Little is known about the return, but maybe it will lead to some closure for Deputy Chief Christian Garland.
Barnes first appeared on Law & Order: Svu Season 21, and was promoted to series regular the following season.
However, the star exited at the beginning of Law & Order: Svu Season 23 alongside Jamie Gray Hyder, who played Kat Tamin.

We’ll be seeing more of Octavio Pisano on Law & Order: Svu. Pisano, who portrays Detective Joe Velasco, has been promoted to series regular on the NBC procedural.
Pisano’s Joe Velasco is a former undercover and detective under Chief McGrath (Terry Serpico) who’s been assigned to the Svu. Pisano has appeared in 3 episodes so far, beginning with the season 23 premiere.
Season 23 picked up mere hours after last season’s finale, where Catalina Machado (Zabryna Guevara) was arrested for trafficking single mothers living in shelters in a complex housing-for-sex scheme. She now wants to flip on her superiors in exchange for a deal with the feds, and names a powerful congressman as the big fish. It’s a make-or-break case for the NYPD and puts enormous pressure on the entire Svu squad to get a conviction.

According to Deadline, the NBC procedural will say goodbye to Jamie Gray Hyder (Officer Kat Tamin) and Demore Barnes (Deputy Chief Christian Garland).

When Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) left the world of Manhattan’s Special Victims Unit in 2011 it was a gut-punch to long-term fans of the “Law & Order” franchise. How could he leave without saying goodbye to his partner and best friend, Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay)? It wasn’t until last week, in anticipation of Meloni’s return to NBC with his spin-off series “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” that we got some answers — but the concept of “Stabler coming home” also caused us to look at Stabler’s 12-year checkered career as a cop.
Stabler’s homecoming was started off with his return to “Svu.” In the wake of an attack on his wife, Stabler convinces Benson to let him interrogate a possible suspect. Despite Benson’s misgivings — she knows he isn’t exactly the coolest cucumber — she allows him a brief moment with the suspect. Stabler holds it...
