'War Room' movie: The Power of Prayer. The Power of Prayer at the domestic box office: 'War Room' (sort of) beats 'Straight Outta Compton' A miracle was needed for any of this weekend's new entries to beat the sleeper hit of 2015, F. Gary Gray's Straight Outta Compton, at the North American box office. As long as studio estimates are on target, that miracle has (sort of) happened. Praise the Power of Prayer and the Power of Expert Targeted Marketing. “If you haven't started already, pray for this movie,” urges an Evangelical Christian website featuring a War Room promotional giveaway, “that the Holy Spirit would be in abundance at each showing of the film, that hearts would be impressed to pray more than ever and that revival will happen as a result!” Directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written by Kendrick and his brother, Stephen Kendrick, the Power of...

Title: Courageous Director: Alex Kendrick Starring: Alex Kendrick, Ken Bevel, Ben Davies, Kevin Downes, Robert Amaya Courageous is a religious genre flick with some edge to it. Naturally there’s reflection within the dialogue but there’s also solid comedy and a few intense action sequences; all which mesh perfectly in this 130 spiritual telling. The story centers around five guys – four working as officers for Albany, Georgia Sheriff’s Department – as they go through the rigors of life. The fifth guy, Javier (Robert Amaya), is a struggling construction worker whose only goal is to keep food on the table for his wife & kids. Times are tough for Javier’s family...

Dream House – Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts

Movie of the Week
50/50
The Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick
The Plot: A comedic account of a 27-year-old guy’s cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.
The Buzz: I don’t know, I’m not that excited about 50/50, but it’s gotta be better than Dream House, right? Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz are both great actresses, generally known for choosing good films, but this Daniel Craig guy, really? He’s looking so haggard, like he’s strung out on heroin, and he just emanates this brooding whininess, and I sense zero acting talent within. How in the world did he become a leading man? I...

Sherwood Pictures is back with their fourth feature, Courageous. The company took us to a used car sales lot in Flywheel, hit the football field in Facing Giants, the firehouse in Fireproof and now it’s time to join the police force in Courageous. The film stars Alex Kendrick and Ken Bevel as Adam Mitchell and Nathan Hayes, respectively, a pair of hardworking cops willing to do anything for the safety of their town. The problem is, their dedication to their jobs often leaves them turning a blind eye to something far more important, their family. When tragedy strikes, Adam and Nathan must reconsider their priorities in order to pull through....

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll
Director: Aaron Harvey
Summary: The story focuses on three women being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman, a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook.
Analysis: Oddly little is known about this indie crime comedy aside from the three lead female roles have gone through more than a couple of rounds of casting musical chairs. The likes of Maggie Grace, Kate Mara, Laura Ramsey, Sarah Roemer, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren German were all attached at one point or another before the final trio of Malin Akerman ("Watchmen"), Nikki Reed ("Twilight") and Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") were settled on.
Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker, Michael Rosenbaum and Brad Dourif also star with Willis as a crime boss behind everything that happens and Whitaker as a dangerously unstable assassin. Aaron Harvey, who last directed...
