As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another.
If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows, Netflix’s horror library remains a high point — with original triumphs, including Guillermo del Toro...

Set in the well-heeled part of New York’s Upper West Side Jewish community, Tribeca Festival audience award winner “Bad Shabbos” is an entertaining, fast-paced comedy about a Sabbath dinner gone terribly awry. After four previous indie features, director Daniel Robbins should score wider distribution with this tender look at several generations of modern Jews trying to balance the polarities of secular and religious lives, along with the dilemma of a dead body in the bathroom. Robbins and his longtime co-writer Zack Weiner up the comedy ante by stirring in several dysfunctional family dramas, an inter-faith culture clash and an intrepid doorman. A strong ensemble cast nails the tasty dialogue and increasingly frantic action without falling into shtick.
David (Jon Bass) and his fiancée Meg (Meghan Leathers), a shiksa already deep into conversion class, are headed for another Friday Sabbath dinner at the home of his parents, Richard (David Paymer...

As if their weekly shabbat gathering wasn’t already a reason for them to all start kvetching, imagine what happens when a Jewish family from Manhattan’s Upper West Side accidentally murders one of their dinner guests. Or when their future and very goy-ish in-laws try to pronounce the word “chutzpah.” Or when the Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man shows up wearing a yarmulke.
These are some of the shandas (that’s Yiddish for scandals, disgraces, shames, etc.) in Bad Shabbos, an ensemble comedy set during one long and volatile Friday night get-together that leaves a body fresh on the ground and ready for shiva.
Directed by Daniel Robbins (Pledge), who co-wrote the script with Zack Weiner, the film is rather familiar in conception and execution, even if it concentrates on the very narrow community of upper-class Manhattanites that most of us know from the films of Woody Allen. Some...

Two new Australian films, both enjoying their world premiere, are among the first titles confirmed to play at the Sydney Film Festival in June.
“In Vitro,” a sci-fi mystery thriller set on a remote cattle farm in the near future, hails from directors Will Howarth and Tom McKeith (“Beast”) and stars Ashley Zukerman (“Succession”).
With “The Pool,” director Ian Darling (“The Final Quarter”) paints a cinematic portrait of a year in the life of the iconic Bondi Icebergs, the pool and the people who cherish it.
They will be joined by New Zealand actor Rachel House (“Hunt for the Wilderpeople”), who makes her feature directorial debut with “The Mountain,” which centers on three children discovering friendship’s healing power through the spirit of adventure as they trek through spectacular New Zealand landscapes. Netflix is boosting its Australian slate with a limited drama series titled Apple Cider Vinegar, which tells the story of a notorious scam in the health and wellness industry. Produced with Australia’s See-Saw Films and Picking Scabs, the show will be directed by Jeffrey Walker (The Artful Dodger, Modern Family) and co-star star Kaitlyn Dever, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Aisha Dee.
The series is created by award-winning Australian writer Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers), who is scripting the show with Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien.
The series is inspired by the real-life story of disgraced Australian wellness influencer Belle Gibson, who built a massive social media following by claiming that she was successfully overcoming a terminal brain cancer diagnosis via healthy eating and other wellness remedies.

Apple TV+ has extinguished City on Fire.
According to Deadline, the crime drama has been canceled after just one season.
The decision comes six weeks after the conclusion of City on Fire Season 1.
The series failed to garner much buzz, a surefire sign that a show is not long for this world.
We rarely get viewership statistics for streaming shows, so the buzz is the only indicator of success to observers.
City on Fire was saddled with terrible reviews from critics, with a 39% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fans were considerably more positive, with an audience score of 78%.
Apple TV+ recently launched Silo, which became the most-watched drama, achieving considerable buzz and acclaim.
Hijack also seems ripe for success after breaking through in ways many shows haven't.

The Apple TV+ crime drama “City on Fire,” which wrapped up its 8-episode first season two months ago, will not be getting a second season, TheWrap has confirmed.
Based on the novel of the same name by Garth Risk Hallberg, “City on Fire” wasn’t listed as a limited series. But the story shown in Season 1 covered the entire book, which means viewers won’t be stuck with a never-resolved cliffhanger similar to Hulu’s 2020 “High Fidelity” adaptation.
Set in 2003, the story follows the aftermath of the shooting of a young student in Central Park, New York city. The investigation uncovers ties to a series of fires, the Manhattan music scene, and a secretive and wealthy real estate family.
Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the show was executive produced by Schwartz and Savage alongside Lis Rowinski and Jesse Peretz.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has opted not to pick up a second season of crime drama series City on Fire. The news comes a month and a half after Season 1 finished its eight-episode run on the streamer. It is not surprising as the adaptation of the novel of the same name didn’t get a lot of buzz the way other recent Apple TV+ entries like Silo and Hijack have.
While City on Fire was ordered and marketed as a drama series, not a limited series, and there were seeds for a second season planted in the finale, viewers will not be left hanging as Season 1 covered the arc in the book.

In 2022 “Succession” made history by earning 14 acting nominations at the Emmys. That’s the most any show has ever received in a single year. That number was especially remarkable as it came from 16 acting submissions on the Emmy ballot, meaning only two submitted performers failed to make the cut (supporting actor Alan Ruck and guest actor Justin Kirk). In 2023 the show has submitted more actors for consideration (19). So will the show break its own record by earning 15 or more acting noms?

The beginning of season four of "Succession" seemed to spell the end of the marriage of Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Shiv (Sarah Snook). In the first episode, viewers learn that Tom and Shiv have had a trial separation for quite some time, coming off of Tom's betrayal of Shiv and her siblings in the season three finale. In some of the season premiere's final scenes, the duo agree together that their marriage is over and they gave it a good shot (the latter statement being a bit more debatable to "Succession" viewers).
Things evolve, from there, though throughout "Succession"'s last episodes. At first, reconciliation is in the air as Tom and Shiv find themselves tangled up in the sheets amid their shared grief over Logan's death. The flirtations and sexual exploits continue into season four's seventh episode - until reality returns and leads to an ugly, mid-party fight between the couple.

This article contains spoilers for season 4 episode 8 of Succession.
If there was any hope that Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) could change his ways and become a better person in the wake of his father’s death, it has been thoroughly squashed by the latest episode of Succession “America Decides.” Watching Kendall work with his siblings to succeed in spite of his father rather than for his approval has been one of the most interesting and compelling arcs this season, but we should have known that it was too good to be true. Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) have already shown that they’re looking out for themselves above whatever bond they have as family by siding with Mencken (Justin Kirk) and Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), respectively, so it was really only a matter of time before we saw the full return of “killer” Kendall.

Spoilers for "Succession" follow.
Well, it's official. Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk) will be the next President of the United States — thankfully not in this reality. Back in "Succession" season 3's "What It Takes," the fascist Congressman was recruited to run as the Republican nominee for president by the Roy family (mostly Logan and Roman). In the latest episode, fittingly titled "America Decides," he's elected president -- but not with the will of the people.
On election night, Mencken supporters firebomb a polling office in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Wisconsin has become a swing state since the 2010s but Milwaukee is a blue firewall, so most of the destroyed votes surely would've gone to Mencken's opponent Daniel Jiménez (Elliot Villar). The lack of those votes is enough to flip Wisconsin to Mencken and give him the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory.
The Roys' own news network Atn calls Wisconsin for Mencken and...

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of Succession, “America Decides.”
Like so much of what happens within the episode, the title of “America Decides” is a lie. America does not decide the result of the presidential election dramatized within the installment. Kendall Roy decides.
Well, so does Roman Roy. So do a bunch of Jeryd Mencken’s (Justin Kirk) most criminally enthusiastic followers. And so, for that matter, does Shiv Roy. Shiv spends much of this slow-motion tragedy arguing to her brothers, to Tom, to anyone who will listen,...

It’s Election Day! Episode 8 of the final season of “Succession” finds the Roys and crew navigating the momentous occasion, the first that American Television Network will be covering without its late founder Logan Roy at the helm.
Though titled “America Decides,” the nail-biting hour is really about network boss Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) figuring out how to spin the night’s news for Atn’s rabid conservative audience base, all the while fighting interference from the business and partisan considerations of Roy’s children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Connor (Alan Ruck) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook), who also happens to be the wife Tom had an earth-scorching argument the night before.
May the best candidate win. Spoiler Alert: They won’t.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 8, “America Decides.”]
It all started with a Coke.
Last season, at the Future Freedom Summit in Virginia, Logan (Brian Cox) was parched. It was late, his fridge was bare, so he called up his good buddy — the Vice President of the United States — and asked if he could bring him a soda. The V.P., agitated over being roused in the wee hours of the morning, didn’t bring him anything. He came, he spoke, he bored the piss out of everyone in the room, but there was no Coke. No Coke, until Congressman Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk) stopped by, kissed the can, popped the tab, and plopped it down in front of Logan.
“I heard you wanted one,” he said, to which Logan replied with his simple but satisfied thanks. “Anointed with a Coke,” Mencken said, and walked out of the room.
Logan, of course, didn’t need a Coke.
It all started with a Coke.

Reading Garth Risk Hallberg’s City on Fire well after its initial publication hype, it isn’t always clear what generated that buzz in the first place.
At 900+ pages, it’s an unquestionably ambitious first novel, but Hallberg’s distinctive prose feels mostly in service of obfuscation. It’s a book in which all manner of structural and aesthetic trickiness — an occasionally evocative ’70s setting, faux Dickensian sprawl, flashbacks, flash-forwards, digressions in the form of a punk rock ‘zine and a fireworks-obsessed piece of long-form journalism — offer distraction from the run-of-the-mill mysteries that make up the core storyline. It’s full of vivid moments, but less full of effective twists or compelling characters.
Watching Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Apple TV+ adaptation of City on Fire, which arrives with no particular hype, it isn’t always clear what connection it even has to the book in the first place.

This article contains spoilers through season 4 episode 7 of Succession.
With all of the Roy family’s drama, it’s easy to forget that Succession has spent all four seasons building up to a major presidential election with actual stakes. Given how obscenely wealthy the Roys are, politics have always been something they can casually interact with and flip sides on to suit their own personal needs without worrying about the cascading effects on the rest of the country. Even Connor’s (Alan Ruck) presidential campaign has felt more like a running joke than anything of consequence to the show. That is, until this week’s episode “Tailgate Party.”
Set the night before the presidential election, “Tailgate Party” showed us just how close this election is, with Jiménez ahead of Mencken by only four points. Because the race is so close, Mencken’s campaign uses Roman (Kieran Culkin) to try and...

The streaming landscape is as crowded as ever this week. Apple TV+ has a new series from the team behind "Gossip Girl," a murder mystery called "City on Fire." Netflix is bringing back the fab five for season 7(!) of "Queer Eye." Meanwhile, Pete Davidson is getting confessional in the semi-autobiographical comedy "Bupkis," and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" is finally swinging its way towards Disney+.
If you burn through "Queer Eye," make sure to check out "Getting Curious," which puts Jonathan Van Ness' sunny spin on the educational show format. "City on Fire" stars can also be spotted in recent cult favorite teens shows "Generation" and "I Am Not Okay With This."
Have you heard about the Writers Guild of America strike? Round out the week with some essential strike-related viewing: "Harlan County, U.S.A." is a classic documentary streaming on HBO Max, while the workplace sitcom "Superstore" adds comedy to a labor movement plotline.

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 7 of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max.
The election looms over “Succession,” which means not only will there be a new president of the United States but, more importantly? Nate is back.
The charming — or sleazy, depending on how you view him — political strategist, portrayed by Ashley Zukerman, has reentered the world of the Roys in order to mingle with Waystar’s top brass and the political elite, and make Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) jealous in his own home.
In Episode 7, titled “Tailgate Party,” Tom and Shiv (Sarah Snook) host a gathering on election eve, at which Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) makes a surprise visit. A double agent, Shiv plays informant to the GoJo chief in exchange for a key role in the company should the deal close. But the prospect of a Waystar-GoJo merger, which Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin...

(The bid for power has not only intensified in season 4 of "Succession," but is approaching its end: now more than ever, anyone can come out on top. As the series comes to a close, we'll be tracking the rise and fall of the Roys, their allies, and their never-ending list of enemies.)
Alright, I'll bite: do any of these people even know what a tailgate party is?! They're not exactly serving food out of pickup trucks at the Wambsgans-Roy pre-election party; instead of ice cooler beer, they've got champagne, hors d'oeuvres, and thousand-dollar bottles of German wine. But what this so-called tailgate party lacks in realism, it makes up for in plenty of juicy drama!
"Tailgate Party" takes advantage of a classic "Succession" setup: like "Prague" or "Retired Janitors of Idaho," it largely takes place at a single event, where various plotlines entangle for maximum entertainment. So in between Tom's (Matthew Macfadyen) yawns,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 7, “Tailgate Party.”]
Tick tick tick.
As “Succession” enters its final three episodes, time-bombs are everywhere. Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgärd) is a nuclear option unto himself. His uncontrollable antics could force or sink GoJo’s deal with Waystar, but there’s also his perilous ‘ship with Ebba (Eili Harboe) to worry about. She claims all those blood bricks Lukas sent her are the least of his worries, and maybe she’s right — though it’s kind of hard to forget about the blood bricks — since Lukas and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are considerably shaken once news about GoJo’s bullshit India numbers reaches Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin).
The smile on Kendall’s face says it all: He’s finally got the leverage he craves to make a serious play for power — one his dad would, in theory, be proud of, and one that allows him to push out his hangers-on sibs.

Apple TV+ will be premiering the eight-episode series City on Fire, inspired by Garth Risk Hallberg’s bestselling novel, on May 12, 2023. The first three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by new episodes on Fridays. The season’s finale is set to air on June 16th.
City on Fire takes place in New York City, and in an interview with NPR in October 2015, author Hallberg – who grew up in North Carolina – explained why he chose NYC as the setting. “I fell in love with New York at some indeterminate point in my early years,” said Hallberg. “Something about the city captured my imagination in a way that even Middle-Earth and Narnia couldn’t — because it was somehow real.”
Hallberg added: “So I guess I was dreaming my way into it long before I realized that I was going to write about it.”

We don't have to wonder if Succession will be cancelled or renewed this time. It's already been announced that there won't be a fifth season. Still, in this age of TV show sequels, reboots, and reunions, could all or some of the members of the Roy family return someday? Stay tuned.

“Succession” has experienced a long journey from under-the-radar HBO drama to buzzy 13-time Emmy winner. And now that the upcoming fourth season (launching Sunday on HBO and HBO Max) has been announced as the last, there’s only 10 more episodes left to wrap up everything that the show has been building toward. With such a large ensemble and abundant supporting players, there are a lot of ways it might all come to an end. But I think I’ve got things figured out. So ahead of tonight’s Season 4 premiere, I offer some obvious developments that could unfold along with some less predictable ones plot twists.
What old characters might return? Who will make it to the final episode? And will Kendall (Jeremy Strong) actually catch a break for once? Here is what my crystal ball says:
Amir Returns

HBO’s official trailer for Succession season four is full of plotting, backstabbing, and shifting loyalties. In other words, everything we’ve come to expect – and love – about the award-winning drama.
The trailer kicks off with Logan Roy insisting he’s accomplished so much that no one should question how he’s doing. That’s followed by Greg spying on Logan as he circles the trading floor, describing Logan’s actions to Tom on the phone as terrifyingly moseying. “It’s like if Santa Claus was a hitman,” says Greg.
The trailer also includes Kendall suggesting to his siblings that they need to fight Logan by partnering up with Sandi, Stewy, and Pierce – “death wrestling ogres.”
The final season stars Brian Cox as Logan Roy, Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, Sarah Snook as Siobhan Roy, Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy, and Alan Ruck as Connor Roy. Matthew Macfadyen plays Tom Wambsgans,...

Succession is heading to an end.
The hit HBO drama series will come to a conclusion with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorker.
The series will return for season four on Sunday March 26. The season picks up when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said, “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys is not opposed to a possible ‘Succession’ spinoff, but argues that it “doesn’t seem like a natural thing.”
“I always say ‘never say never.’ When we started talking about doing a ‘Thrones’ prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done. I had some people internally saying, ‘This is crazy. What are you doing?’ That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George created that lent itself to [spin-offs],” Bloys told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. “There’s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles. It doesn’t seem to me that there’s something in ‘Succession’ where you would go, ‘Let’s follow just this kid’ or whatever. It doesn’t seem like a natural thing to me. Apple TV+ is turning yet another bestselling book into a streaming series, much like it's done in the past with shows such as "Pachinko" and "The Essex Serpent." The streamer has shared new information surrounding the release of "City On Fire," an eight-part Apple Original crime drama inspired by the 2015 novel of the same name by author Garth Risk Hallberg.
