There’s a scene in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love where Julia Roberts’s character Liz basks in the experience of eating a guilt-free pizza. It was an important character moment for her–and for many audience members. And whatever your specific dietary preferences or requirements may be, we hope that you’ll enjoy whatever your guilt-free “pizza moment” is this Thanksgiving, surrounded by friends and family (chosen or otherwise.)

Netflix’s February rotation has much more to offer than just romance movies, though if you’re looking to extend the Valentine’s Day mood, several options like the Reese Witherspoon rom-com “Your Place Or Mine” from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna will warm your heart. “La La Land” could also satisfy the longing for a love story, but self-love is the most important, and “Eat, Pray, Love” can help you with that.
For those not feeling the love, “Lyle Lyle, Crocodile” promises fun for the whole family with the help of music from “La La Land” composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Shawn Mendes, who voices a CGI crocodile who only expresses himself through song, also contributed an original song to the film.

Food is a universal theme in movies, and what's great about that is the wide variety of traditions, customs, and cultures that go into making foods from around the world so different and interesting. Food is strongly tied to family all over the map, whether it's big events like weddings or a Sunday dinner, or recipes handed down through the generations. Food can also be part of seduction or used in erotic games, and it can trace the arc of a romantic relationship. Food being prepared professionally, in restaurants, always makes for high drama and it's easy to understand why professional kitchens are such frequent settings for movies and TV shows. The tension can be unbearable, but there's also camaraderie amongst the staff, and interesting bonds to be explored with the customers and (gulp) the critics.

Julie Powell, an author known for cooking her way through every recipe in Julia Child‘s Mastering the Art of French Cooking book, which led to a popular food blog, her Julie & Julia memoir being adapted into a movie starring Meryl Streep, and a new wave of fans for Mrs. Child, has died on October 26 in her upstate New York home at the age of 49. Her death was reported to The New York Times by her husband, Eric Powell, who stated the cause was cardiac arrest. I was thrilled when Julie Powell agreed to recap the Julia Child Cooking Challenge for us earlier this year. The symmetry of it all. I’m shocked and saddened to learn about her death. The world’s fascination with Julia Child — arguably the world’s first celebrity chef, and certainly the first to make a career out of cooking up both an assortment of beloved television shows and a bestselling lineup of books — hasn’t abated much since Child passed away in 2004. By 2009, Meryl Streep was playing her on-screen in Nora Ephron’s “Julie & Julia,” which threaded Child’s later years alongside the fraught young adulthood of New Yorker Julie Powell. Later this year, HBO Max will debut a full-scale miniseries about the Francophile, with British actress Sarah Lancashire playing Child. Before that series, however, there’s yet another entry — also, like the HBO Max series, entitled “Julia” — , who excel at putting the life stories of remarkable women on the big screen (see: their Oscar nominee “Rbg”).

Costume designer Ann Roth has collaborated with actress Meryl Streep for four decades on films such as “Silkwood,” “Heartburn,” “The Post” and “Julie & Julia,” creating wardrobes that have helped the actor navigate a wide range of roles.
While Streep has been nominated for Academy Awards five times in their 13 films together, Roth notes that the costumes the actor wears do not wear her; it’s the other way around. “I’m just there to help her find the character,” she explains.
Here, Roth reflects on some of those costumes and how they came to be designed.
Silkwood
This was the film that began the pair’s partnership. The movie called for Streep, who stars as whistleblower Karen Silkwood, the real-life nuclear factory worker who witnesses unsafe practices at the plant, to wear denim jackets and cowboy boots with T-shirts — when she wasn’t in her hazmat suit at the factory.

Amy Adams and Chris Messina have a palpable chemistry in the debut episode of Sharp Objects alone. It's almost as if they've done this whole acting thing together before. Well, as it turns out, they have! Nearly a decade ago, the actors costarred in 2009's Julie & Julia, the heartwarming Nora Ephron-led movie about renowned chef Julia Child and author Julie Powell. In the movie, Messina portrays Julie's husband, Eric Powell. In the gritty HBO miniseries, Adams portrays Camille Preaker, while Messina portrays Detective Richard Willis.
After becoming friends following Julie & Julia, Messina said he was eager to work with Adams again. "I wanted another shot with Amy when I wasn't just eating her food and telling her how delicious it was," the actor told the New York Post. In fact, Adams advocated for Messina to be cast in Sharp Objects. Messina said, "I think she wanted someone around...

After a number of TV appearances early in her career, Amy Adams has made a glorious return to television in HBO’s eight-episode limited series “Sharp Objects.” The series is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for directing another heralded HBO mini, “Big Little Lies.” In this project, Adams portrays troubled reporter Camille Preaker, who just having been released from a psychiatric hospital for harming herself, returns to her hometown to investigate a double murder.
Adams, of course, is most known for her film work, having earned two Golden Globe Awards (from seven nominations), won a Screen Actors Guild Award (also from seven nominations) and has been nominated for five Academy Awards. Those Oscar nominations have been for “Junebug” (2005), “Doubt” (2008), “The Fighter” (2010), “The Master” (2012) and “American Hustle” (2013).

If you're a writer living in Maine, as I am, you'd have probably heard of W. Hodding Carter. He's Maine's answer to Aj Jacobs, the man who wrote The Year of Living Biblically and The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. It's journalistic shtick, but it's interesting and often enlightening journalistic shtick. Basically, you do something all out for a year, write about it (preferably, on a blog), sign a lucrative book deal, and sell the rights to a movie studio. Boom! All that suffering was worth it, and you win at life. Elizabeth Gilbert did it with Eat, Pray, Love and Julie Powell did it with Julie & Julia. It's high-concept journalism. Find a compelling gimmick, make a fortune.
W. Hodding Carter -- whose dad was the Assistant Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter -- has made something of a career out of his peripatetic lifestyle.

The closest we've ever come to seeing a blog adapted to a movie was last year's Julie & Julia (correct me if I am wrong), but even that was an adaptation of a book which was in turn about Julie Powell writing on her blog. But now, an actual blog, all on its own, will be adapted to a film as THR's Heat Vision reports that a strange blog known as The Museum of SuperNatural History has been picked up by DreamWorks to be turned into some sort of feature film. The museum's "curator," Ernest Lupinacci, seems to be having a laugh at the supernatural "wonders" of the world, but more than jokes, there's some killer material found there. Lupinacci considers the museum to "be to the paranormal world what National Geographic is to the real world." The blog's tone is serious, but at times the content is laughable. ...

Far too many of the scathing reviews of Julie Powell’s second book, Cleaving: A Story Of Marriage, Meat, And Obsession, have focused on Powell’s morality rather than her writing; after reading it (or even about it), people love to judge her. But to be fair, she seems to be openly demanding that judgment, not in her admissions of infidelity, but in her aggressive smugness and lack of relatable insight about them. As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced the nominations for their awards honoring 2009’s films, with a few surprises, notably Chris Rock’s Good Hair in the Documentary Writing section. And given all the reviews of Avatar that I’ve read which attack the script’s writing, especially the dialogue, I’m surprised to see it on the list for Original Screenplay. I thought The Hangover was silly fun, but, I don’t know if I’d say it was what we’d call great writing. I think I’d take the writing in noticeably absent Inglorious Basterds over those 2 films.
Also surprised not to see Tom Ford’s adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel, A Single Man. I’d take that over Star Trek in that category.

Coco de Mer's new store, on Elizabeth Street. The first clue that Coco de Mer is not your mother’s sex shop is the way that Justine Roddick pronounces the word “debauchery.” Swaddled in her jammy British accent, the word sounds comforting and good-humored, as if debauching oneself was no different than a long lunch at a particularly cozy wine bar, or a pleasurable afternoon of antique shopping. And that’s pretty much the vibe that Justine and her little sister, Samantha, have established at the chain of erotic emporia they’ve opened in London, Los Angeles, and, as of last week, Elizabeth Street in Manhattan’s NoLiTa district. While the typical purveyor of sex paraphernalia tends to employ garish lighting, bad heavy metal soundtracks and sales associates who just love the vibrator that comes with a carburetor and a kickstand, Coco de Mer cultivates a warmer, less intimidating approach for a more discerning clientele.

Chicago – 2009 has been a year of supremely underwhelming biopics, primarily because Hollywood has bent over backwards to make them marketable. You’d think that the idea of Meryl Streep playing Julia Child, or Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela, or uncanny newcomer Christian McKay playing Orson Welles would be enough to sell a picture.
But each of these great actors and their respective characters are reduced to supporting roles in their own films, in favor of more commercially viable subjects, such as a hip blogger, a rugby game and Zac Efron. It’s infuriating to see such talent and potential go to waste.
DVD Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Julie & Julia” is the latest effort from the reigning queen of benignity, Nora Ephron. She seems incapable of writing any movie without including a cheerfully prosaic protagonist straight out of a mid-90s’ Meg Ryan vehicle. One can only imagine what Julia Child would’ve thought...

In Julie and Julia, a perky and ambitious young Manhattan writer named Julie Powell, decides to cook all the recipes in Julia Child's culinary bible "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in the space of a year -- and write a blog about it, called Julie and Julia. Can she make it? Can she and her husband Eric (Chris Messina) eat it? Will Julie strike it rich by mining Julia and serving her up on a blog? Most importantly, is this a clicky enough movie subject, in a field where catastrophes, murders and sexual high jinks abound? Well, yes… as long as you have the right recipe and the right people. Especially Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, the movie's Julia and Julie.

Julie & Julia (2009) whipped up a frothy $120 million tally at the box office during its surprisingly successful box office run, and now it's arrived on DVD via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. For anyone who missed the film in theaters, the DVD is a treat -- for several reasons. First, there's the film itself. It's vastly entertaining, if imperfect; so good, you wish it were just a touch tastier. Meryl Streep disappears -- that's what she does -- into the role of Julia Child, the late, great chef and co-author of that cookbook evergreen, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her story, how and why this unusually tall, rather plain-looking woman became a culinary legend, and how she managed to get her book published, is intercut with a contemporary and also-true bit of business about struggling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who blogs to the world about her efforts to serve up every recipe in Child's book,...

Nora Ephron had already signed on to write and direct the movie that combined the story of Julia Child's start in the cooking profession with the emotional journey of blogger Julie Powell, when she ran into Meryl Streep at a Shakespeare in the Park performance. Ephron told Streep what she was working on, and Streep offered her best Julia Child impression: "Bon appétit!" Ephron knew her search was over. After reading the script, Streep called Ephron. "I thought it was absolutely beautiful," Streep recalls. "It made me cry, the idea that what you put in front of your family, that love, those connections between people, are the real important things." "Both stories were going to be about marriage and food, two things that go together in most people's lives," says Ephron. "When you're in the romantic comedy business, the movie ends when people say, 'Will you marry me?'...

We love it when movies get caught up in a cycle of true-life inspiration. We enjoyed how celebrity chef Julia Child inspired office drone Julie Powell to cook, a move which led to her blogging about her results, which in turn leapt from monitor to page as a book collecting together her online diaries and then onto the big screen as a film (Julie & Julia) and then lastly, encouraged audiences to go hit the kitchen. And now it looks like a similar chain effect promises to kick off with fellow true-life tale, Eat, Pray, Love. This also begins in the real world as, after a nasty divorce, writer Elizabeth Gilbert set about on a soul-searching journey around the world and learnt how to “eat pray and love”. She then shared the experience as a book in 2006, entitled (yup, you’ve guessed it) Eat, Pray, Love which became a literary sensation...

Do you love cooking shows or consider yourself a Julie Powell-esque culinary wunderkind? Do you also have a video camera and a strong appreciation for Euro-feminist art films? Then hurry up and submit your entry to the Jeanne Dielman Cooking Video Contest to win prizes (and more importantly, bragging rights) from the Criterion-hosted competition for your homage to Chantal Akerman's celebrated 1975 film about cooking, cleaning, and the mental breakdown that comes from one woman's dogged devotion to domesticity.
Akerman's masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles follows the daily routine of Jeanne Dielman, a single mother who follows a strict schedule of tasks each day; she cooks, she cleans, she pimps herself out to one john a day in order to provide for her son. You know, the usual. When tiny disturbances (a dropped utensil, a miscalculated shopping trip) throw her routine out of whack, Jeanne loses it.

Quipped as being 'the First movie adapted from a blog,' Julie and Julia is really two movies about the same subject: cooking. One part biopic, one part romantic comedy and the result is surprisingly acceptable.
The biopic follows chef Julia Child and her husband in post-war 1950's Paris where she turns her love of cooking from a hobby into being a successful writer on the subject. Intertwined is the story of Julie Powell circa 2002, a blogger who plans to cook all 500+ of Julie Child's recipes in 365 days and write a blog in the process. As Julia learns, Julie cooks and writes. A spiritual kinship develops between the two, each character using the art of cooking to inform and add passion to their days.

Here at Boxwish we love being inspired by movies and Julie and Julia is all about inspirations. Julia Child (played by Meryl Streep) is inspired to become a chef who inspires Julie Powell (played by Amy Adams) to change her life. As the film follows these two very different women we begin to see similarities, particularly the joy cooking brings to them both, and for this week’s merchandise swag we’ve got the three books which inspired the movie.
The film follows the two stories of Julia learning to cook in France during the 1950s, and Julie learning to cook in the present day, from Julia’s book Mastering the Art of French Cooking. With this book Julia introduced French cooking to America, and it contains 524 recipes, as well as guides to ingredients, measurements and kitchen equipment. I have been a vegetarian for over twenty years and yet eighty minutes into a screening at Sony last week I was hit with an overwhelming urge to see a roast duck dismembered. What fresh madness was this? The power of film my friends. Essential to the climax of Julie & Julia (reviewed here) is the ability of blogger Julie Powell to bone, wrap, cook, carve and serve a duck. And yet you never see her carve the duck – maddening! For this reason, and to coincide with the Friday release of the film, I give you my Top 5 satisfying foodie movies.

Nora Ephron made her name as a screenwriter and director of smart, romantic comedies; yet her last two films (Lucky Numbers and Bewitched) were box office disasters.
Julie & Julia is Ephron’s return to form – and partly down to the stellar performances courtesy of Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci; who imbue their (real life) characters with an infectious warmth and gentle humour.
As films go, its source material(s) is thoroughly post-modern: being based on a blog-turned-book inspired by a famous cookery book – and a memoir. From these key ingredients the director concocts and serves up a delightful film.

I must be honest here and confess to not feeling optimistic about Julie & Julia earlier this week. I am not a great fan of Meryl Streep and her Mary Poppins bag of regional accents and besides, it was a movie about a cook and a blogger – how good could it possibly be?
Rather blooming good actually.
Julie & Julia takes the lives of two apparently disparate women and links them across the years with a cookbook. Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking was published in 1961 and went on to become a homemaker’s bible and her best known work. The journey from kitchen to publishing house was as complex as the Cordon Bleu recipes she sought to explain. Julie Powell began her 2002 blog as a something of a cry into the virtual universe in the months before she turned thirty because she wanted to do…something.

Mary Lynn Rajskub has joined Amy Adams and Meryl Streep in Columbia Pictures' Julie and Julia, currently filming in New York. The film is the true story of Julie Powell (Adams), who spent a year cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's classic cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cuisine," and blogging about her trials and tribulations.
Rajskub ("24") plays Powell's best friend, Helen. The film also covers Child's life in France in the 1940s and 1950s, based on her biography. Streep plays Child, and her The Devil Wears Prada co-star Stanley Tucci plays her husband, Paul. Nora Ephron is directing the Scott Rudin production. Rajskub is repped by Endeavor and Mosaic Media.

NEW YORK -- Chris Messina is in negotiations to star opposite Amy Adams and Meryl Streep in Nora Ephron's comedy Julie & Julia for Columbia.
Messina is in line to play the husband of Adams' title character, a depressed government worker trying to add spice to her marriage and life by making every recipe in Julia Child's book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking." Streep plays the famed cookbook author in a parallel post-World War II story line. Stanley Tucci is set to play Child's husband.
Ephron adapted the script from Julie Powell's autobiographical book "Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen." Powell's husband Eric urged her to start a blog about the undertaking, which led to a large online following and her 2005 nonfiction best-seller.
Amy Robinson, Eric Steel, Laurence Mark and Ephron are producing the film. Scott Rudin and Dana Stevens will executive produce.
Principal photography is tentatively set to begin in March. Andrea Giannetti is overseeing the project for Columbia.
