Three short films from emerging filmmakers – Last Meal, Dipped in Black and The Last Elephant on Earth – have been backed by a joint initiative between the South Australian Film Corporation (Safc), Adelaide Film Festival and Panavision.
The Short Film Production Initiative was created to drive the growth of Sa screen industry and support filmmakers to find their authorial voice and develop their craft. Each film is due to premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in October.
Safc acting head of production and development Beth Neate congratulated the three successful teams.

A feature doc about Lion and Beautiful Boy writer Luke Davies, a film about a recording studio on a remote island in the Caribbean built by Sir George Martin and a tale about underground horror filmmaker Dick Dale are some of the docs to have received funding from Screen Australia.
The Australian government-backed body has awarded A$3.5M (Us$2.5M) for 18 docs as part of its latest funding giveaway.

Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai was voted best film and Erica Glynn’s She Who Must Be Loved best documentary at the Adelaide Film Festival audience awards.
Matthew Bate’s The Art of the Game, a hybrid documentary produced by Katrina Lucas, which follows two of Australia’s most innovative photographers – Trent Parke and Narelle Autio – as they bring together the worlds of art and sport in their first ever moving-image work Summation of Force, was deemed best short.
All three were supported by the Adelaide Film Festival Fund.
Icon plans to launch Hotel Mumbai, the thriller about those trapped in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in the 2008 terrorist attacks, starring Armie Hammer, Dev Patel, Jason Isaacs and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, in April following the Us release via Bleecker Street, which is likely to be in March.

Screen Australia and ABC TV today announced the production of five half-hour documentaries as part of the Opening Shot series for ABC2.
The series, set to air mid-2012, be made by emerging documentary makers, telling entertaining, real life, untold stories of IVF, internet vigilantes, puppets with herpes, the life of abattoir workers, and fashion in indigenous communities.
Alan Erson, ABC TV head of documentaries said: “We are always on the lookout for new talent and it’s invigorating to be working with up-and-coming producers and directors.”
Liz Stevens, Screen Australia’s documentary manager said: “With well over 100 applications received, the next generation of filmmakers certainly have a lot to say on all aspects of life and society. They’re edgy and direct films and I’m really looking forward to seeing them on screen.”
Stuart Menzies, ABC2 Controller said: “ABC2 is the natural home for Opening Shot – new stories, new film makers and challenging ideas.
