Onetime Disney Channel starlet Bella Thorne says that she was nearly made to bow out of Shake It Up!, due to a choice in beachwear.
As a recent guest on the High Low With EmRata podcast, Thorne recounted instances of being sexualized as a preteen and teen, including an instance where, at age 10, she said a casting agent reported back to her mom, “she’s not moving forward because the director felt like she was flirting with him, and it made him really uncomfortable.”

Welcome back for another installment from Brady Riann, Moviefone's teenage correspondent. You'll get reviews and insights into the world of film -- from a teenage perspective.
This week marks the DVD release of Cartoon Network's live action teen-aged comedy "Contest" starring Danny Flaherty as bullied high school student Tommy Dolen and Kenton Duty as his swim cap sporting arch-nemesis Matt Prylek. The film also stars Mary Beth Peil, Katherine McNamara, and even "Phil of the Future" star Raviv Ullman has a short role as the cooking game show host.
The film revolves around the bullied Tommy dealing with an interesting set of emotional and physical obstacles he must overcome. One of those obstacles is Matt, a swimming star with his own set of issues -- issues he decides to take out on Tommy. But after the two have the confrontation to end all confrontations, they must put their differences aside...

Contest is a movie about a boy and the school bully forming a team in order to win a cooking contest. Kenton Duty from "Shake It Up!" plays Matt Prylek, the school bully. I had the chance to interview him over the phone and we talked about his past bullying experiences, his character in Contest, and his music career ahead of him!
Q: I read in an article that you were bullied for being "different." How did you feel at the time you were bullied and how did you deal with that?
Kd: Bullying never feels good at the time. I was sort of a small guy up until recently. I was always small in stature, and that got me picked on, especially in the sport arenas. I also have food allergies, and people thought it was fun to pick on me for that.

Kenton Duty’s turn as a bully in the film “Contest” has helped create a dialogue with children and caretakers about school bullying and how to combat it. ShockYa was happy to be able to talk with Duty about the role, the film’s part in Cartoon Network’s anti-bullying campaign and Duty’s future projects. “Contest,” written and directed by Anthony Joseph Giunta and also starring Mary Beth Peil, Katherine McNamara and Kyle Dean Massey, will be available on DVD and VOD Dec. 17. What can you tell me about your character? Kenton Duty: Well, Matt is a bully, but he’s also an all-star swimmer. He’s the head of the school, if you [ Read More ]

"Shake It Up's" Kenton Duty joins his Contest co-star Katherine McNamara (both pictured) along with Joel Courtney from Super 8 to review Thor: The Dark World. Here's what KidsPickFlicks three Movie Star Movie Critics have to say about Thor and Jane Foster's latest adventure:
"Don't be left in the dark, Marvel has made another must see film. They've created another thunderous hit with Thor: The Dark World. This film is truly beautiful with breathtaking moments of cinematography created both in live action and with CGI. Worlds literally collide in this film as Thor and his band of heroes, some very unlikely and unwilling to be so, attempt to prevent all nine realms from being plunged into total darkness. Marvel stays true to its style and includes its signature bits of wit and humor separated by plot twists, sweet moments of romance, and epic battles of pure heart pounding action.

"Contest" is a coming-of-age movie with a strong message of anti-bullying. KidsPickFlicks' very own Movie Star Movie Critic, Katherine (or "Kat") McNamara, stars in the Cartoon Network movie alongside Kenton Duty and Daniel Flaherty. Find out more below about the twists and turns in "Contest," the Stop Bullying Speak Up Campaign, and also a bonus, a Kitkat fun fact.
Q: Tell us more about your character in "Contest."
Kat: "Contest" follows the story of two students, Matt and Tommy. Matt is the star athlete of the school who is also a bully. Tommy is a kid who loves to cook and just wants to stay out of trouble, but is victimized by Matt. I play Sarah, a student blogger for the school, and a new girl in town who is trying to make new friends. She's very down to earth, very no nonsense, and really appreciates when people are genuine and kind to one another.

In America, one out of four kids are bullied.
"Contest," starring Kenton Duty, Katherine McNamara, and Daniel Flaherty, is a movie about a bully and a victim, who, through a series of events, must learn to work with each other. Many of the actors in this movie have, in fact, been bullied before, which is why the stars feel so passionately about taking part in anti-bullying campaigns. Kat McNamara tells KidsPickFlicks her own experiences with bullying and shares advice on what to do if you are a victim of bullying.
Q: How did you feel at the time you were bullied and what did you do to overcome that?
Kat: I've actually been bullied quite a bit in my life. I was always the different one for many reasons and sometimes other kids don't understand that being different is okay. I even had my face smashed into a water fountain...

The Wolverine is the latest X-Men movie. How does it measure up? KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney (Super 8) and Katherine McNamara ("Girl vs. Monster," "Kickin' It") rate it a Pick!
"The Wolverine was a blockbuster next chapter to the X-Men series. The film included nonstop action as well as some phenomenal acting moments from Hugh Jackman as Logan struggles to make the choice between his own life and death. The Wolverine has become jaded from his years of fighting and finds the lines between justice and injustice blurred as he is still deeply scarred by the death of Jean. He goes to Japan to see an old friend and almost escapes his eternity but instead gains a new perspective on life and the meaning of the word hero. 4 stars. Ps - There is an epic clip in the credits, so stick around afterward!"

A movie about retirees doesn't sound like a movie for teens and yet teens seem to be responding to Red 2. In fact, KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, call it a "perfect combination of action and comedy." Here's what they had to say:
"Red 2 shows that the best indeed never rest. The film was the perfect combination of action and comedy. Byung-Hun Lee and Bruce Willis show off their hardcore fighting (mostly with each other) while Mary-Louise Parker and John Malkovich keep audiences chuckling all the way through. Catherine Zeta-Jones mesmerizes as an ex-flame of Willis' who is also a Russian agent and Helen Mirren captivates as a British agent who at one point accepts a contract to kill Willis and his team. One major theme of the movie is accepting help from others...

Pacific Rim has giant robots fighting giant aliens, which sounds pretty awesome. But, is the movie as a whole any good? KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, explain what works in this sci-fi monster movie:
"Heart pounding nonstop action is the main component of Pacific Rim. The special effects were overwhelmingly detailed. Charlie Hunnman and Rinko Kikuchi gave standout performances as Raleigh and Mako, two unlikely heroes who have to work together to control a Jaeger, a giant robot, to defend Earth from the Kaiju, alien creatures emerging from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Teamwork and the importance of overcoming past rivalries for the sake of success are the major themes through out this intense blockbuster. 3 stars."

Who knew that minions could be so adorable? The world clearly loves the little yellow guys as Despicable Me 2 is already at the half a Billion dollar mark in ticket sales. But, is it any good? KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming summer movie Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, say Despicable Me 2 is deserving of every penny:
"In the sequel to the beloved evil classic, Gru has changed sides and been tamed by his girls. Margo, played by Miranda Cosgrove, is reaching the age where she is interested in dating and Gru, the typical dad has trouble accepting that his little girl is growing up. When the Anti Villain League recruits Gru to go undercover to help catch a criminal mastermind, he has to balance the demands of fatherhood with the safety of the world! The Minions of course are.

It's been a fun summer at the movies, but they're not all gold. KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara (not pictured), stars of the upcoming summer movie Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, say if you're going to skip one film over summer vacation, it's Grown Ups 2.

"Grown Ups 2 was very funny but very adult in its sense of humor. The young actors playing kids of the comedy legends were very good. Shaq also gave a hilariously standout performance. Warning: Parents, this movie was very inappropriate and would not recommend it for anyone under 18. 2 stars."

The summer is going fast, with racing movie Turbo rounding the half-way point on summer movies. KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming summer movie Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, say Turbo is a gas!
"Turbo may just seem like a movie about a racing snail, but despite its seemingly small shell, it has a big heart. This film has messages that are good for people of all ages to hear. Even when you've lost everything, never give up. No dream is too big and no dreamer too small. These are a few of the many lessons taught in throughout the movie. It is a hysterical film for the whole family with many moments of uproarious laughter. Turbo has to overcome his greatest disability and ability, not being a car. Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson bring the movie to life as the fastest snails ever.

"Monsters University, the long awaited prequel to the beloved Disney Pixar classic Monsters Inc., is an absolute scream! It follows the story of the horrific dynamic duo, Mike and Sully, as they work together to become scarers at their alma mater, Mu. This side splitting two hour movie spans a wide range of emotions from betrayal to true friendship as our heroes chase their dreams. References to the first film will make audiences jump out of their seats with excited realization! This is a great film for the whole family! 5 stars.

2013 may be the year of the zombie...as well as the year of the apocalyptic movies. World War Z brings those two genres together. Does it deliver everything a teen would want in an end-of-the-world zombie flick? KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming summer movie Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, say yes! Here's their review:
"World War Z was a terrific movie in more ways than one. This film follows the story of Gerry, a former Un operative played by Brad Pitt, and his family as they attempt to survive and stop the spread of this mystery virus that turns those infected into zombie like creatures. The special effects used made it look as if the world really had been taken over by swarms of zombies. The acting makes the audience believe that death is imminent despite the fact that Brad Pitt has a gun.

The Lone Ranger brings all the action of the wild, wild west to life in the hands of the filmmakers behind the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Does it deliver the same kind of fun and crazy stunts? KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics Joel Courtney and Katherine McNamara, stars of the upcoming summer movie Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, say yes! Here's their review:
"The Lone Ranger rides into theaters this summer to save the day and give audiences a true classic western, but with a twist. As with most westerns, The Lone Ranger has a continual stream of action throughout the movie but the added special effects which made the film even more spectacular. The soundtrack was very powerful and added another layer of intensity to the film. The production design was very well done. Between the props and costumes, the look of the movie was perfect for that time period.

The Host is a movie made for teens by "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer. Two of KidsPickFlicks' teen movie critics - who also happen to be our Movie Star Movie Critics, Joel Courtney from Super 8 and Katherine McNamara of Disney Channels's "Girl vs. Monster" -- rate The Host as a 4-star Pick:
"I was actually quite excited to see The Host. It seemed like a very intriguing concept and it had the potential to be very good science fiction for a younger generation. The story held true to my expectations. It was a classic story of human resistance to alien domination, but with twists of an understanding alien and not one, but two budding romances. Saoirse Ronan plays two roles in the film: Melanie, a member of the resistance, and Wanderer or Wanda, the alien that takes over her body. Ronan gave a very good performance of both roles as...

When it comes to thinking about college, talk to Katherine McNamara. The 17-year old "Girl vs. Monster" and "Kickin' It" star graduated from Drexel University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in March! Kat says she plans to pursue her Master's degree and studying for Gre (the test you have to take to get into grad school) and Gmat (the test to get into school to pursue an Mba). So, as high school seniors around the country are finding out what colleges they got into and making their decisions by the May 1 deadline, it's totally fitting that Kat -- and her movie star movie critic friend Joel Courtney from Super 8 -- review the Tina Fey movie Admission, which they rate as a 5-star Pick:
"This spring break, be sure to take note of this great new comedy. Admission follows the story of Portia Nathan, played by Tina Fey,...

The twosome are also KidsPickFlicks Movie Star Movie Critics who write movie reviews based on their unique perspective -- and they rate The Croods is a 5-star Pick:
"Pack your bags, grab your sense of adventure, and get ready to set out on the "first family road trip" in history with none other than - the Croods! This movie follows the story of a wonderfully dysfunctional family of cavemen who are forced to leave their home due to the splitting of Pangea into the continents we know today. Joel Courtney, the star of Super 8, and "Kickin' It" actress Katherine McNamara are KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics -- and they rate Skyfall a 5- star Pick!
"Non-stop action, spectacular visual effects and incredible performances bring us yet another Bond...James Bond movie. Bond finds his arch enemy and is led on a rabbit trail throughout the movie all for the sake of revenge. Many of the actors in this movie delivered noteworthy performances. Daniel Craig was 007 himself, the cool, calm, and collected agent truly under any circumstances. Judi Dench gave a fantastic and surprisingly vulnerable performance as M, a woman torn between her two favorite subordinates and the risk of losing her job as well as the agency altogether. Javier Bardem created the ultimate bond villain in Silva, a former agent turned cyberterrorist, who was truly creepy in every way. In Silva, Bond has found a rat who might be his equal,...

Joel Courtney, the star of Super 8, and "Kickin' It" actress Katherine McNamara are KidsPickFlicks.com's Movie Star Movie Critics -- and they rate The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 a 5- star Pick!
"The Twilight Saga certainly has a grand finale in Breaking Dawn Part 2. This movie is the perfect ending to the series and rivals the others to be the best film of the saga. The movie is so beautifully shot, with the peaceful first snow of winter interrupted by a flurry of vampires and werewolves literally ripping each others heads off (in a PG-13 way, of course)! The leading trio, Stewart, Pattinson, and Lautner, deliver another fantastic performance in the film, as they are forced to truly grow up after the birth of Bella and Edward's child. Okay, guys! It’s time to find out which young male star is better than the rest. Who do you think is the next Big Thing and deserves the title of Best Rising Male Star 2012!? The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon always seem to get it right. Many of their child actors end up making it big, but nothing’s guaranteed! Will Jake Austin from Wizards of Waverly Place be the next Star? How about Shake It Up stars Kenton Duty and Roshon Fegan? Perhaps adorable Jason Dolley from Good Luck Charlie? Or Bucket & Skinner’s lead actors, Dillon Lane & Taylor Gray?
We’ve put together a list of twenty rising male stars and are throwing a contest to determine who is the Best. The contest will be split into two rounds. Round One will feature all twenty nominees! Then, we will narrow the nominees down to the top ten, who...

Thanks to Lee Hirsch's unblinking documentary Bully and The Weinstein Company's tireless efforts to promote the picture as well as battle the MPAA for a PG-13 rating that would allow the film to play in schools, the topic of bullying drew a lot of attention this year. Among the things I never thought I'd be writing about The Amazing Spider-man, Andrew Garfield says that he was inspired by Spider-man XXX: A Porn Parody. “I watched it a few times. I watched it more from an inspirational stand point than from a sexual standpoint. I think you can find inspiration from anywhere when it comes to this character because it’s everyone’s; it belongs to everyone…”

I'm sure that The Vice Guide To Being Gay is going to offend some people – it trades on some stereotypes, but the A-to-z guide is pretty funny, and it has more than a few truths in it.

Kenton Duty may only be 16 years old, but this talented (and adorable) actor is wise way beyond his years. Kenton plays the foreign exchange student, Gunther, on the record-breaking Disney original series, Shake It Up. He's also appeared on Cold Case and The Jay Leno Show. Oh, and you also probably recognize him from his very prominent recurring role as young Jacob on Lost. Yeah, him! I had the pleasure of chatting with Kenton all about Shake It Up, his costars, his music and why he'd like to see a Shake It Up movie just as much as the fans. As you will read, this was less of an interview and more like a chat with a friend. Such a nice guy! Read on for our full interview!

One thing about summer: the movies are great, the TV...not so much. Luckily, Disney Channel is keeping up new episodes of their series. The cast of "Shake It Up" tells KidsPickFlicks their movie Picks!
Zendaya (who plays "Rocky Blue") says picking just one movie as her favorite is "really hard!" But, she came up with Two movies as her Pick: "The Princess and the Frog is one of my favorites. Shrek is also one of my favorites. Oh man, there are so many!"
Adam Irigoyen ("Deuce") says, "I gotta admit, Toy Story 3. I'm not going to lie, it was amazing...it Was Amazing! I was kinda sad at the end when they left Andy."
Kenton Duty ("Gunther") says, "Tangled was really good: It was amazing, instant classic! I love that movie; the music was really good too! Go Mandy! I also loved Toy Story: Tim and Tom are amazing guys.

On November 7th, the Disney Channel premiered a new show, Shake It Up!, that tells the story of a group of teens who work as dancers on a local TV show. But they’re often sabotaged in their efforts to get ahead by the flamboyant, stereotypically “gay” German exchange student Gunther (and his twin sister Tinka).

Meanwhile, TeenNick (the channel known as The N until last year, an off-shoot of the children's channel Nickelodeon) is airing new episodes of DeGrassi (formerly DeGrassi: The Next Generation), which includes the character of Riley Stavros, a formerly closeted jock who is slowly working his way out of the closet.

We were invited to a press event for Disney Channel's "Shake It Up." This show is poised to be the next tween sensation.
Here's what the stars of the show had to say when asked questions by our kid reporters, Holden (age 9) and Seena (age 6):
Zendaya - Raquel "Rocky" Blue: "The highlight of my life so far was the first day on set! I was like, 'This is real. This is not a dream!' I grew up watching 'That's So Raven' and 'Lizzie McGuire' on the DIsney Channel, and now I was going to be on Disney Channel, too!"
Adam Irigoyen - Deuce Martinez: "I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for my parents. I give them all the credit. They moved out here two years ago for me to pursue my dreams."
Davis Cleveland - Flynn Jones: "I auditioned four times for this role! I'm...

Last night (or early this morning), ABC aired the Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost special. Kimmel has long been a fan and supporter of Lost so it was appropriate that he would host a reunion and discussion with the cast. The show also features farewell messages from celebrities, humorous clips, and three alternate (albeit joke) ending scenes from executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
Not looking unlike one of the Survivor finale/reunions, the studio was decorated to look like the island and included some authentic props and set pieces. Taking part in the studio were Naveen Andrews, Nestor Carbonell, Alan Dale, Jeremy Davies, Emilie de Ravin, Michael Emerson, Matthew Fox, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O'Quinn and Harold Perrineau. Lindelof, Cuse, Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly appeared via clips. Even a young Jacob (Kenton Duty) popped up here and there in the background.
