“Scrublands”is a new Stan Originals Australian-produced live-action ‘rural noir’ TV drama series, directed by Greg McLean, based on the novel by Chris Hammer, streaming May 2, 2024 on Sundance Now and AMC+:
“…in an isolated and struggling country town, a charismatic and dedicated priest, ‘Father Byron Swift’ (Jay Ryan) opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners.
‘One year later investigative journalist ‘Martin Scarsden’ (Luke Arnold) arrives to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy. But when Martin's instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart, and he finds himself in a life and death race to uncover the truth.
“Martin finds the people of ‘Ruversend’ deeply scarred and hostile to journalists, with local bookstore owner ‘Mandy Bond’ (Bella Heathcote), ‘Constable Robbie Haus-Jones’ (Adam Zwar), and widow ‘Fran Landers’ (Victoria Thaine) giving him short shrift.

In a 1996 episode of "This American Life," host Ira Glass was introduced to the vast, near-incomprehensible world of "Dark Shadows" for the first time. "Dark Shadows," for those who don't know, is a Gothic, vampire-forward soap opera that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, lasting six seasons and, no lie, 1,225 episodes. Because it was a daily program, the showrunners had to work at a breakneck pace, often committing grievous technical errors along the way. Those errors, however, were the central appeal for the world's many "Dark Shadows" fans. Glass likened it to tuning into car races just to see crashes. There is verisimilitude to such a concentration of human error.
Then, Glass is told by a "Dark Shadows" fan, that words like "groovy" began working their way into the show's dialogue sometime in the 1969 season. "Dark Shadows" is deeply beloved, partly for its complex, vampiric storylines, but just as much for its cheap camp.

Deadline reports that The Sopranos creator David Chase is set to reteam with Terence Winter for an untitled horror movie set up at New Line Cinema.
David Chase is expected to direct the movie, which he will also co-write alongside Terence Winter. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but given the Sopranos pedigree, my mind immediately leaps to Cleaver, the fictional movie within the HBO series produced by Christopher Moltisanti. While I doubt that Chase and Winter are going the slasher route, it’s still fun to imagine.

Over the course of six decades (1910-1970), tens of thousands of Australian Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their homes due to the assimilation policies that were in place at the time. These policies claimed that the lives of First Nations people would be improved if they became part of white society, and an effort to breed out color from the Aboriginal population was carried out. Unsurprisingly, the lives of the removed children were not improved, with studies showing that many of them developed adverse reactions to their removal like mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, among others. These children became known as The Stolen Generation, and their experiences left a black mark in Australia’s history.

Between 1910 and 1970, tens of thousands of mixed-race children of Australian Aboriginal descent were forcibly removed from their parents and communities, becoming wards of the state. That human rights violation carried out in the name of “protection” and assimilation has been the subject of books, documentaries and narrative features, notably Phillip Noyce’s gripping 2002 drama, Rabbit-Proof Fence. Few Indigenous filmmakers have been given the opportunity to explore the unhealable wound of the “Stolen Generations,” which makes Jon Bell’s The Moogai deserving of attention, deftly weaving a legacy of trauma into supernatural horror.

The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most highly respected film festivals in the world, and while the horror genre generally doesn’t seem to receive as much respect as it deserves, horror has had a steady presence at Sundance over the years. In fact, just last year the Sundance horror line-up included the likes of Infinity Pool, Talk to Me, My Animal, and Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. The Sundance 2024 line-up was revealed earlier today (you can see the list Here) – and there again a good number of horror movies included in the program.

Luke Arnold’s latest thriller, Scrublands, sees Martin Scarsden’s investigation into the tragic church killings orchestrated by Pastor Byron Swift. Those who knew Pastor Byron Swift (Jay Ryan) said he was a generous and kind-hearted man. He treated everyone with respect and was always the first to volunteer to serve the community. He preached the teachings of Christ but never forced or pressured anyone to follow suit. Maybe that’s why no one would have suspected what was going to happen next. One day, while everyone gathered around the church for their morning prayers, Pastor Swift went berserk. He cold-bloodedly murdered Craig (Martin Copping), Tom (Scott Major), Alf (Fletcher Humphrys), Hugh (Ben De Pagter), and Gerry (Adam Morgan) with his long-range rifle. Robbie, the cop, arrived at the scene, shot Pastor Swift, and ended his killing spree.

Amid breaking news coverage of the attacks on Israel, Fremantle has decided against bringing the Australian satirical comedy C*A*U*G*H*T, which stars and is executive produced by Sean Penn, to MIPCOM for promotion and international sales amid the expanding conflict with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

There’s nothing quite like having an Oscar-winning actor in your corner, or perhaps a star of one of the biggest TV Series of all time. In the case of Kick Gurry, creator, producer and actor in the forthcoming Stan Original Series “Caught,” the backing of Sean Penn and Matthew Fox has undoubtedly been a boon.
After Gurry shared an early teaser of the show crafted with friends in Australia, Penn’s reaction was music to his ears. As Gurry shared with Variety, “He said everyone’s afraid of stories right now and we have to be pushing forward with courage in storytelling.”
Indeed, the courage to tell bold, new stories has resulted in an audacious six-episode satirical comedy series slated to premiere later in 2023. In what is possibly one of the most elaborate anti-jokes in recent memory, a remake of Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" starring Bob Odenkirk will take the entire thing dead seriously. The volunteer organization Acting for a Cause has produced and staged the charity project for amFAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, with company creator Brando Crawford acting as director. Those who worked on the project have promised to not treat Wiseau's shining beacon of unintentional hilarity for laughs, including longtime comedian Bob Odenkirk, who tweeted out how excited he was about participating in this momentous occasion.
Created during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, Acting for a Cause usually stages script readings of plays and films over laptop video conference meetings. However, "The Room" will be more elaborate than the average table read, incorporating green screens to replicate scenes in the original film. The lack of location changes allowed the entire production...

Bob Odenkirk’s dream is for cult hit “The Room” to be considered, in the immortal words of Harry Styles, a real film movie.
The “Better Call Saul” alum is set to take on the role of Johnny, as originated by writer-director Tommy Wiseau, for a remake of the 2003 film. The remake will benefit amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, with Mike Flanagan, Kate Siegel, Justin Decloux, Brando Crawford, Cameron Kasky, Arturo Castro, and Bella Heathcote rounding out the cast.
“The Room” follows San Francisco resident Johnny as he grapples with his fiancée cheating on him with his best friend. A first look at the philanthropic remake showed original cast member Greg Sestero on set.
Yet the outrageous script cemented the would-be Shakespearean tragedy “The Room” into cult B-movie status — something that Odenkirk singlehandedly wants to undo.
“I don’t change the lines, but I do them my own way,...

Bob Odenkirk is entering “The Room,” and hopefully it doesn’t tear him apart, Lisa. Deadline reports that the “Better Call Saul” actor will star in a for-charity remake of Tommy Wiseau’s notorious cult classic, which is famous for being one of — if not the — worst movie ever made.
The project comes from Acting for a Cause, a volunteer organization that stages digital readings of classic plays and movies for charity. “The Room” will benefit HIV/AIDS research organization amfAR.
Produced, directed, and hosted by Acting for a Cause’s Brando Crawford, “The Room” remake will feature Odenkirk and others acting out Wiseau’s script in front of green screens of the actual movie’s locations. Odenkirk will play Johnny, unforgettably played by producer-director-writer Wiseau in the inept original. Oh, hi Bob.
Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk will star in a video re-creation of The Room, one of cinema’s strangest films – some say the worst, others know the naysayers just don’t get it.
Performed against a green screen that displays locations used in the original movie, The Room remake is the latest endeavor from Acting For a Cause, an all-volunteer organization that produces and stages Zoom-style table readings of classic plays and movies for charity. Produced, directed and hosted by the organization’s Brando Crawford, The Room will benefit amfAR.
“This is real,” Odenkirk tweeted last night. “This is true. And let me tell you, I tried my best to Sell every line, as honestly as I could…and I had a Blast.’
Typically, the Acting For A Cause productions are announced just days before they appear on the group’s website, with pre-show information dripped out on its Instagram page.

Better call “The Room” fans because Bob Odenkirk is set to take over Tommy Wiseau’s role for a remake.
The “Better Call Saul” star confirmed that a reimagining of Wiseau’s 2003 movie “The Room” will benefit amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary. Odenkirk will play Johnny, the role writer-director Wiseau infamously played in the cult classic.

Bob Odenkirk will have a large padded shoulder jacket to fill when he plays Tommy Wiseau’s iconic role of Johnny in an upcoming remake of the campy cult classic The Room.

"The Room" has certainly earned its place in cinematic history, albeit as one of the most notoriously bad films ever made that managed to gain mainstream notoriety. Made by the elusive and strange Tommy Wiseau, the film celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. And it sounds like we will be getting a pretty bizarre treat to help commemorate that anniversary in the form of a remake starring none other than Bob Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul" and "Mr. Show" fame. Yes, you heard that right.
Buzz around this remake of "The Room" kicked up on social media, with podcaster Justin Decloux taking to Twitter to say, "I am very excited for the feature-length 'The Room' remake (Shot mostly on greenscreen) in which the Tommy Wiseau role is taken over by Bob Odenkirk -- and it's not played as a joke." It may feel like throuples are a distinctly modern romantic arrangement – but this couldn’t be further from the case.
In fact, consensual non-monogamy, such as a ménage à trois, goes back centuries. It can even be found in the bible.
Recently, David Haye has been the subject of speculation surrounding his private life, with fans claiming that the ex-boxer is in a three-way relationship with model Sian Osborne and The Saturdays singer Una Healy.
On Valentine’s Day, Haye appeared to confirm the rumours, with Healy also sharing a coy message on Instagram alluding to the relationship.
When it comes to depictions of polyamorous relationships in film and TV, good examples have traditionally been few and far between.

Two years ago, writer/director Jon Bell made a 15 minute horror short called The Moogai. Bell is now set to make his feature debut with an expansion of The Moogai, and The Babadook producers Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings of Causeway Films are producing the film alongside Mitchell Stanley of No Coincidence Media. Filming will be underway by the end of this month.
The Moogai has the following synopsis:
A young Aboriginal couple brings home their second baby. What should be a joyous time takes a sinister turn, as the baby’s mother starts seeing a malevolent spirit she is convinced is trying to take her baby. The feature explores post-natal depression, transgenerational trauma and Australia’s Stolen Generation (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were removed from their families between 1910 and 1970).
The film stars Shari Sebbens (Thor: Ragnarok) and Meyne Wyatt (The Sapphires), who were both in the short.

Pixar’s Turning Red, the studio’s latest animated feature to be re-routed to Disney+ from movie theaters, topped Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart in its debut.
The film collected 1.7 billion minutes of viewing, easily outdistancing Netflix’s The Adam Project, which premiered the same day (March 11) and drew 1.36 billion minutes to rank No. 4.
Netflix’s five-season medieval drama The Last Kingdom and new thriller series Pieces of Her finished second and third, respectively, for the period of March 7 to 13. Nielsen measures viewing via a TV set for Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix.
The Adam Project, which reteams star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy, doesn’t need to be a smash in the U.S. to prove its value. It has already been minted as one of Netflix’s most-watched films ever on a global basis. According to the company’s self-reported numbers, the film ranks No.

Though the reign of “Encanto” has begun to subside, Disney Plus remains on top with Pixar’s latest feature “Turning Red” debuting in the No. 1 position in Nielsen’s newly released Top 10 streaming rankings. The title accrued more than 1.7 billion minutes watched from March 7 to 13, beating out “The Last Kingdom” and “Pieces of Her,” the Netflix series that nabbed positions 2 and 3 respectively, both with 1.4 billion minutes watched.
“Turning Red” wasn’t originally intended for a streaming debut at all, until Disney announced in January that the title would skip theaters and head straight to the small screen on March 11. The film follows a confident and dorky 13-year-old named Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), who transforms into a giant red panda anytime she gets overly excited — which happens incredibly easily as a pubescent middle schooler. Along with Chiang, the voice cast includes Sandra Oh, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Orion Lee,...

Transferring a story from page to screen is no easy feat, but there's no denying that some of the best TV shows and films are actually adaptations of books. That doesn't mean the shows stick strictly to what was written in the books, though. Take Netflix's recently released series Pieces of Her, a bingeworthy thriller that follows a young woman's (Bella Heathcote) quest for answers about her mother's (Toni Collette) dark past. Warning: Spoilers ahead. Based on Karin Slaughter's novel of the same name, the show manages to keep the integrity of the story intact while also introducing new characters, plotlines and most notably, a twist ending that may or may not set the...

Contains spoilers for Pieces of Her episodes one to four
Netflix’s thriller Pieces of Her is based on a novel by the aptly named best selling author Karin Slaughter. Though it’s set in America, the whole of the series was shot in Australia with the majority of filming taking place in 2021, and many of the cast are Antipodeans and Brits as well as Americans.
It’s a twisty tale of a mother who carries out an act of bravery which suddenly exposes her to a world she had long since left behind, and a daughter who discovers she really doesn’t know her mum at all. Pay attention! But in case you’re distracted by the niggling sense of ‘where do a recognise them from?’ we’re here to remind you.

Surviving a shooting would be traumatic enough, but for Andy Oliver, that’s just the beginning of the harrowing journey that will soon upend her entire life.

Not everything is quite what it seems in Netflix's latest series, "Pieces of Her." Based on Karin Slaughter's 2018 novel of the same name, the eight-episode thriller follows Bella Heathcote's character, Andy, as she sets out to uncover the truth about her mother Laurie's (Toni Collette) dark past after a shooting in their small town puts their lives in danger. The series also stars Jacob Scipio, who plays Michael Vargas, a mysterious stranger on Andy's trail that eventually turns into the only person she can trust.
You might recognize the 29-year-old actor from some of his previous roles, which include Sgt Justin Gallegos in 2019's "The Outpost" and Armando Aretas in 2020's "Bad Boys For Life." He's also set to star in the upcoming "Expendables 4" film and "Batgirl" alongside Leslie Grace, but right now, he's celebrating the release of "Pieces of Her," which...
