The Commissioned Films competition at the 2018 edition of the Annecy Film Festival and Mifa market will feature 31 commissioned animated short films, chosen from 417 submissions. Participating films are either music videos, commercial advertisements or educational videos, which will compete for two awards: The Annecy Cristal for a Commissioned Film and the Jury Award for a Commissioned Film.
The participating films were selected by Annecy artistic director Marcel Jean and film and programming team members: Laurent Million, Yves Nougarède, and Sébastien Sperer.
Sperer has worked for Citia, the organization which runs the festival, for two decades. He has been on the selection committee since 2013, and in a conversation with Variety explained how those years of experience have led to a simple and streamlined selection process.
“We really know the job now,” he said. “Most of the films are chosen because they are astonishing and really beautiful.”

The 17th annual Boston Underground Film Festival is set to explode all over the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square on March 25-29.
Opening Night: The fun kicks off on the 25th at 7:30 p.m. with the exciting new flick from the always amazing Astron-6 collective, The Editor, an homage to the brutal Giallo movies of the ’70s and ’80s directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy. This will be followed by the restored version of the legendary cult classic Gone With the Pope by the notorious Duke Mitchell.
Closing Night: Goodnight Mommy the debut feature film by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will screen at 8:30 p.m. on the 29th and is a nightmarish vision of familial dread when twin brothers believe their cosmetically altered mother is literally not the woman she used to be.
Other features include a mix of horror, like Matt O’Mahoney’s...

With the film portion of the South By Southwest Film Festival slowly winding down -- and with those crazy music-only people seemingly turning Austin into a deleted scene from "Southland Tales" -- what better time to give out some festival awards! SXSW did just that on Tuesday night, honoring the graffiti drama "Gimme the Loot" and the rock documentary "Beware of Mr. Baker," about Cream drummer Ginger Baker. Fun! Other winners included Richard Linklater's "Bernie" and even "X-Men: First Class"? Sure thing.
Narrative Spotlight, Documentary Spotlight, Emerging Visions, Midnighters, 24 Beats Per Second, SXGlobal and Festival Favorites Audience Awards will be announced separately Saturday, but for now, check out these SXSW winners.

Yesterday, I directed your attention to a terrific new animated short called Cobwebs. Now there's something equally surreal that's arrived online, a preview for The Master's Voice, an upcoming film from Brazilian director Guilherme Marcondes. It's pretty damn close to indescribable, so you'll just have to trust me on this one and check it out after the jump. Guilherme Marcondes' The Master's Voice utilizes live-action, CG and hand-drawn animation, much like his acclaimed Tyger (which you can view below). Says Marcondes, "The Master's Voice is the story of the city-island of 'M.', a decadent metropolis inhabited only by ghosts and ghouls." There's lots more such goodness,...

By this time Thursday we’ll know if the Decemberists’ critically acclaimed “The Hazards of Love” received a Grammy nod for album of the year, but in the meantime, the concept CD is receiving the video treatment. “Here Come the Waves: The Hazards of Love Visualized” becomes the first full-length video album available on iTunes today. “Here Comes the Waves” recreates “The Hazards of Love” through the creative filters of four filmmakers, Peter Sluszka, Julia Pott, Guilherme Marcondes and Santa Maria, who created animation for segments of the CD. Each auteur took one-fourth of the album and set it to disparate visuals that,...

Last month, we told you about The Decemberists' plan to wrap up their fall tour with a very special performance of their most recent opus—a four-part animated film called Here Come the Waves: The Hazards of Love Visualized. Featuring the work of Guilherme Marcondes, Julia Pott, Peter Sluszka and Santa Maria, it's to be debuted and soundtracked live by the band at an upcoming show in Los Angeles. Cool, right? Right. But also kind of a bummer if, say, you weren't already planning to be in the neighborhood of UCLA's Royce Hall on Oct. 19.

Inspired by William Blake's famous poem "The Tyger," this great little short uses puppetry, illustration, photography and CGI to tell a visually magical tale of the tyger roaming through an urban jungle. Directed by Brazillian filmmaker Guilherme Marcondes.
