Rejected for its ‘edgy content’, Shoaib Mansoor’s timely revenge thriller has finally made it into cinemas after a public backlash. Is the country’s film industry ready for change?
In recent years, Pakistan has seen a huge resurgence of its film industry, which has emerged from the shadow of Bollywood to find its own identity, one at the forefront of the battle between a growing conservatism in the country and an emboldened youth hungry for change. There’s a notable trend towards female-led narratives, which are not only setting new standards in storytelling, but also challenging taboos around the treatment of women in society.
The battle to get the voices and experiences of women on screen achieved a much-needed victory this week when the Pakistani censor board backed down over a decision to ban a new film about the injustices faced by rape victims in the country – a development...

New Delhi, Sep 22: Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, known in India for her role in Shoaib Mansoor's "Bol", is satisfied with her small screen work back in her homeland. Even while many from her nation have come and carved a niche in the multi-billion dollar Indian film industry, she says she has no such aspirations.
"I don't want to be a Bollywood star for sure because the kind of stardom that we get from Pakistan, I am very happy with that. So becoming a Bollywood actress is not something.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

The Pakistani film, which explores the position of women in the country, broke box office records in the territory when it was released last year. Speaking about the film, director Shoaib Mansoor stated: "Tragically, our interpretation and application of religion seem to begin and end with women. "Leaving the 5% of the urban educated elite aside, women seem to be the battleground where we practice a medieval form of religion." (more)...

1. Pyaar Ka Punchnama: The year’s sleeper success that kept us awake for a good 2 hours with its celluloid anthem of ribtickling misogyny. Three room-mates and their troubled love relationships formed the core of the comic conflict. Every character and each episode spilled over with a delightful déjà vu. Debutant director Luv Ranjan managed a 3-guys-in-a-sexist-soup comedy much better than Madhur Bhandarkar in Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji. And the director did it with untried actors. Kartik Tiwari(who is now doing the same director’s nextSaathi) and Divyendu Sharma(who is in David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor) were among the best discoveries of the year.We luv you,Luv, for bringing push to shove without tripping over.

New Delhi, Sep 9: It's been a decade since the attack on New York's World Trade Centre took the world by storm, and filmmakers and documentary-drama makers have since then churned out about 40 works. Of them, Pakistani filmmaker Shoaib Mansoor's 'Khuda Kay Liye' and the documentary 'Fahrenheit 9/11' seem to have earned maximum appreciation.
A multi-layered film, Mansoor's 'Khuda Kay Liye' highlighted the clash between moderate Muslims and the fundamentalists in Pakistan. It also showed how Muslims are viewed with increasing suspicion in the West after 9/11. The well-made film,.

Kill List (18)
(Ben Wheatley, 2011, UK) Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, Michael Smiley, Emma Fryer. 95 mins
Who knew there was a missing link between Mike Leigh, Andy McNab and The Wicker Man? That's how unpredictable this macabre and outlandish tale is, but it unfolds in a credible modern-day Britain scarred by foreign wars and domestic recession. Circumstances lead a blokey hitman and his partner to accept a dodgy new assignment – and by the time they start asking questions, it's too late.
Attenberg (18)
(Athina Rachel Tsangari, 2010, Gre) Ariane Labed, Vangelis Mourikis, Evangelina Randou. 97 mins
Fans of Dogtooth will be ready for another prime dose of Greek oddness. Beneath the animal impersonations, silly walks and bad sex lies an intelligent, intimate study of human behaviour.
Fright Night (15)
(Craig Gillespie, 2011, Us) Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant. 106 mins
A teen vampire horror remake that benefits from superior effects, a shrewd Las Vegas setting, and some lively comedy.

Back in 2007 a British-Pakistani friend strongly recommended the film Khuda Ke Liye, which she watched with us. Having never seen a Lollywood film before, I recall being impressed with the production values, acting, music and concept. Now years on with the export of so many great Pakistani singers to Bollywood (Adnan Sami, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam) it was only natural to be watching a film where I’d seen the director’s first film and in which singer Atif Aslam makes his acting debut.
Bol (Speak up) is the second film written and directed by Shoaib Mansoor and has done extremely well in Pakistan. Like his first film, this is also a social commentary, which looks to reflect a slice of society, as well as challenge it.

Mumbai, Aug 26: Pakistani model-turned-actress Humaima Malik, who will be seen in Shoaib Mansoor's 'Bol', releasing next week, is not amused by being constantly linked with cricketer Wasim Akram.
'Wasim has kids, I've a family. We're both answerable to people in our lives. It becomes very embarrassing for me to be known as Wasim Akram's girlfriend. I hate to be known by that identity. I'm a celebrity in my own right,' said Humaima while speaking from Lahore on phone.
'Just because I'm a girl, do I need to be identified by the presence.
