Soothing the Bruise (1980). Courtesy of the artist and Lux, London.Halfway through Betzy Bromberg’s 16mm short film Soothing the Bruise (1980), a woman strolls a busy New York street wearing a pink-and-black, block-striped sweater; tight, pink, leopard-print jeans; pink socks; and a red heel to the zippy tune of Plastic Bertrand’s “Ça Plane Pour Moi.” She appears again later, with a friend who pulls teasingly at the clothes in front of the camera. They are young, beautiful, happy; the city street is their catwalk. In Bromberg’s early-career trilogy of 16mm works—Soothing the Bruise succeeds Petit Mal (1977) and the perfectly named Ciao Bella or Fuck Me Dead (1978)—the city is at once scuzzy and decadent, a playground for women seeking liberation. Skipping between locales, subjects, and music genres from Genesis to Annette Hanshaw, the films have an urban buoyancy that exudes the buzz of life everywhere the filmmaker looks.

Two-time Emmy nominee Betty Gilpin’s first thought upon hearing that her hit Netflix series “Glow” was heading to Las Vegas for its third season: “Oh, no!” While the glitzy, fun-loving wrestling-centric show seems like a natural fit for the over-the-top desert hot spot, Gilpin was worried about how exactly she would fit into the casino wonderland.
“As a person who has left her wild past behind and whose spring break self has been hung up in the closet, now I’m really an indoor depressive who likes Postmates and YouTube. The thought of Las Vegas concerned me,” Gilpin said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Los Angeles is already at a shock to my, I would say, Emily Dickinson side, so I was nervous about the Charo-ness of Las Vegas.”
Like her character, unexpected wrestling superstar Debbie Eagan, Gilpin was able to transcend those initial concerns with a little more rumination.

When Laura Palmer is found dead and wrapped in plastic, her tragic end ripples throughout David Lynch’s Twin Peaks to devastating effect. An outsider in Agent Cooper enters the town to decipher the circumstances surrounding her demise with a cheery disposition that never fades—a direct contrast to the idyllic scene of nature and diner pies soon torn down as though a curtain clenched by the former homecoming queen’s hands, her final wish being the exposure of what lies beneath. It’s a dark tale layered in sin, a pervasive human evil attacking everyone within reach until even the purest of heart succumbs. Lynch paints it with a stylized, hyper-real affectation highlighting society’s desperation to survive its intrinsically pessimistic machinations, the melodrama amplified until happiness becomes rendered as fantasy.
What if this wasn’t the case, though? What if Laura’s murder was instead a sacrifice that...

When Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” premiered at Sundance this past January, the filmmaker’s intimate family feature instantly inspired two types of headlines: chatter about Wang as a breakout talent, and major accolades for star Awkwafina, taking on her first big dramatic role. Hiring a rapper and actress best known for crafting jams like “My Vag” and offering up supporting laughs in films like “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” was a bit of a gamble.
And while it paid off, with the A24 film earning big critical love (it currently sits at a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), even the newly minted dramatic actress agrees that such risks are just part of her evolving career.
“I think that if I am cast in a production, already that means that production is kind of forward-thinking,” Awkwafina said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Hiring me is always a risk, a little bit.

We can’t count 10 things we hate about this Tacoma, Washington, Victorian home.
The house was home to Kat Stratford in the 1999 rom-com “10 Things I Hate About You” starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, and it’s now on the market for $1.6 million.
The house is the backdrop for several memorable scenes in the film, including the moment when Kat’s dad makes her little sister Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) wear a fake pregnancy belly, when Kat finds out she got into Sarah Lawrence College and when Ledger’s character Patrick Verona flirts with Kat on the massive wrap-around porch.
