Catherine Martin, the four-time Oscar-winning producer, costume designer and production designer of “Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby” and “Elvis,” says she is waiting to see what project Baz Luhrmann, her husband and longtime creative partner, will embark on next.
Martin is at the Red Sea Film Festival with Luhrmann, whom she started working with on his debut feature, 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom.” Since then, there have been a series of projects marked by their striking visual style, netting Martin a number of nominations and awards.
She spoke to Variety.
Following last year’s “Elvis,” what do you think will be your next project?
Baz hasn’t made any decisions. And I assiduously try not to get attached to any project when he’s in the process of deciding what he’s going to do. Because invariably, the one that I become attached to is not the one we end up doing.

Saturday night’s 54th annual NAACP Image Awards once again brought together a star-studded group of nominees across TV and film (despite the rainstorm flooding and causing power outages in several areas across Los Angeles).
But some of the best moments of the show, hosted by Queen Latifah and held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, didn’t make it to air. With The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet and inside the room, here are the top things the TV cameras didn’t show.

Montreal (AP) -- Pole dancers dressed like nuns, Mike Tyson and nonstop theatrics. Welcome to the church of Madonna. The pop star kicked off her "Rebel Heart'' tour in Montreal on Wednesday night, belting out a mix of her iconic hits and new music from her recently released album, also titled, "Rebel Heart." She even performed "Material Girl'' for the first time since 1990's "Blond Ambition'' tour. DJ and producer Diplo warmed up the crowd with an hour-long set. The show opened with a video featuring Mike Tyson, Chance the Rapper and Madonna, where she addressed topics ranging from censorship to dictatorship. She then descended to the stage in a cage. Madonna wasted no time getting to fan favorites including "Burning Up'' and a mash-up of "Holy Water'' with "Vogue.'' She then pulled a classic move and ripped off her skirt to reveal a barely there nun's outfit and started to pole dance.

The American 1980s didn’t begin or end with Ingrid Sischy, but her tenure as editor-in-chief of Artforum — from 1980, when she was 27, to 1988 — made her a perpetual presence, lightning-rod gatekeeper, and immense id of artistic status, ambition, and fame. The Savannah College of Art and Design (Scad) has announced that the short documentary film, "Ovation for Oscar: An Exhibition at Scad Museum of Art," created by Scad alumni and students, is premiering at the Marché du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. The film will screen on May 21, in Palais F, at 11:30am and 1:30pm.
Oscar de La Renta was born on July 22, 1932 in the Dominican Republic. He was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and successfully led his own world renowned fashion house, as well as Balmain, from studios based in New York and Paris. He died on October 20, 2014.
Focusing on the first posthumous museum tribute to legendary fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, the documentary chronicles the creation of the exhibition, “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” as it was prepared exclusively for the Scad Museum of Art by Scad trustee André Leon Talley. The filmmakers also documented the making of the highly anticipated, soon-to-be-released Rizzoli book, "Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style," written by Talley and photographed in conjunction with the exhibition.
This intimate look behind the scenes reveals the nuances and sophistication of the demanding, deadline-oriented work of fashion photographers, white-gloved art handlers and discerning curators as they research, assess, mount and produce a major museum exhibition honoring the late designer, artist and cultural icon.
De la Renta’s friendship with Scad encompassed more than a decade. He was recognized as the first recipient of the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 Scad Fashion Show. Subsequent winners have included Tom Ford, Miuccia Prada, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs.
The film, told from the perspective of Scad student and former Oscar de la Renta intern Sloane Mayberry, features observations by fashion experts and others who worked closely with the late designer including Alex Bolen, CEO of Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Scad President and Founder Paula Wallace notes, “This film, created by Scad students and alumni, comes full circle by celebrating the legendary designer who did so much to support our students and their careers. He was one of those rare spirits who was interested in everything and everyone, and his work is a beautiful reflection of a life fully lived.”
More than 60 unique de la Renta ensembles from the closets of First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush; celebrities including Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift and Oprah Winfrey; and best-dressed women Anna Wintour, Mercedes T. Bass, Lynn Wyatt, and Annette de la Renta are revealed throughout the film and celebrated at the exhibition unveiling. In the film, close friends of the de la Renta family and special guests reflect on the late designer’s life, understanding of beauty, femininity and elegance, and his role as a mentor to future designers.
The 21-minute film was created by Scad film and television students and alumni: producer Tyler Reid (M.F.A. candidate); director Ryan Curtis (B.F.A. 2013); editors Hanny Purnomo Boyer (M.A. 2009), Craig Boyer (M.F.A. 2009) and Laura Minto (B.F.A. 2015) and director of photography Zach Graber (M.F.A. 2012).

No desire to dress the devil! Fashion designer Miuccia Prada gave her two cents on the popular 2003 book The Devil Wears Prada and its big-screen adaptation in a new interview with Italian publication Corriere della Sera this week. What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

Baz Luhrmann wore Jay Gatsby's suits as preparation for 'The Great Gatsby'. The director was keen to embody the character before taking on the latest big-screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel in order to get a feel for the 1920s era. He said: 'I tend to get into character during filming so I started buying pink suits [worn by Jay Gatsby] three years ago to get an idea of the right colour pink. The costumes are the result of an extraordinary collaboration between Catherine [Martin] and Miuccia Prada; it's one of the great joys of the movie. 'Miuccia is a very old friend of mine, and she did the first suits for Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Romeo + Juliet'.

The reviews are in for Baz Luhrmann's epically mounted display of bacchanalia "The Great Gatsby," which opens in the Us on Friday before premiering again at Cannes on May 15. As expected, the film is incredibly divisive. Our own Anne Thompson enjoys the film's swirling visuals but finds the film, at almost two-and-a-half hours, rather thin dramatically (you could probably read Fitzgerald's novel in less time): Finally, this is the kind of film where you hum the sets, as they say in Hollywood. It's outrageously designed by Luhrmann's wife, brilliant production designer Catherine Martin, who delivers the Gatsby manse's shining turrets, gleaming parquet floors, elaborate chandeliers and a mighty gold Wurlitzer organ, but should also earn an Oscar nomination for her gorgeous over-the-top costumes, including the Daisy Buchanan show-topper, a chandelier party dress designed by Miuccia Prada... But when Luhrmann returns for another round of parties, it's a letdown.

The first question that comes to mind is: how on Earth did they find time to do this? With Wes Anderson spending most of last year stumping for "Moonrise Kingdom," and now in production on "The Grand Budapest Hotel," while his frequent collaborator and pal Roman Coppola (who co-wrote 'Moonrise') also ushered his film, "A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III" into theaters, it seems they have found a brief window within in which to work together again. The duo paired up to make a short film for Miuccia Prada, and the first teaser promises something expectedly quirky and beautifully designed. Art Deco, flapper dresses and pearls are all the rage as fashion takes inspiration from movie set in the Roaring Twenties
When Baz Luhrmann's remake of The Great Gatsby takes the prestigious opening slot at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival in May, style-watchers are predicting a visual feast that will turn many back on to the 1920s.
