Forget the fear of flying. In the upcoming six-episode thriller “Nightsleeper,” the real danger awaits on a train travelling from Glasgow to London.
“When we were developing the show, we got all these experts in one room and asked: ‘How do you hack a train?’ An hour later, they said: ‘This is scary. We could easily do it now, between ourselves’,” says writer Nick Leather.
“We will do for trains what ‘Jaws’ did for sharks.”
Produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films and set to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early 2024, “Nightsleeper” is directed by Jamie Magnus Stone and John Hayes.
While Abby Aysgarth (Alexandra Roach) at the U..K’s National Cyber Security Centre is trying her best to stop the train, some remaining passengers also join forces – including off-duty cop Joe Roag (“Peaky Blinders” actor Joe Cole). But they only have six hours and one satellite phone.

Set on a sleeper train from the Glasgow to London, the real-time drama follows a government agency desperately trying to intervene as events rapidly escalate onboard. Two strangers (Cole and Roach) are forced to work together to save the lives of disparate group of passengers, as the train hurtles towards “what might quite literally be its final destination.”

A week is a long time in British politics and even longer if the future of the big-budget drama that you make depends on how the UK government deals with the future of Northern Ireland after Brexit.
This is the case for Dublin Murders, the eight-part crime drama produced by Fremantle’s Euston Films for BBC One, Ireland’s RTÉ and Starz.
The series, which is an adaptation of Tana French’s crime thrillers, was filmed between Belfast and Derry in Northern Ireland and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland. It began airing on the BBC on October 14 ahead of its U.S. debut on November 10 and is set up as a returnable drama, given that there are six books in French’s Dublin Murder Squad series.

Even though he makes a Great first impression with his new potential employer and her friend, John puts professionalism before leisure and pleas to his employment agent Gladys Whitmore, played by Kay Parker (Untamed), that his job provides him with too many horny women! Since I skipped a links post last week due to other projects taking up my weekend, some of these are from awhile ago, but very, very worthy of a click:
Once again for this week’s Must Read, Mark Toscano has another amazing film restoration post up, this time discussing restoring two films by Will Hindle, Pastorale d’Ete (1959) and Later That Same Night (1971). This is an important article because, as Mark notes, Hindle’s place in the underground universe has been on a bit of a slide the past few years. If you’re interested in accurately archiving Shaw Brothers movie releases, then Temple of Schlock has the ultimate post for you. This interview on Experimental Cinema with German filmmaker Klaus Wyborny goes into fascinating depth on his theories of film construction.San Francisco’s Artists Television Access interviewed Chicago filmmaker/curator Amir George on his touring program called “Watch This!

This is the next shoe to drop after the board didn’t go along with the demand by Third Point chief Daniel Loeb to fire Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson by noon Et today. The hedge fund manager. who controls 5.8% of Yahoo shares, says that Delaware General Corporation Law entitles him to inspect books and records beginning September 1 tied to the board’s decision to hire Thompson, as well as other material that would shed light on the naming of directors Patti Hart, Peter Liguori, John Hayes, Thomas McInerney, Maynard Webb Jr, and Fred Amoroso. The dissident shareholder has hired law firms Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Bouchard Margules & Friedlander to conduct the inspection on his behalf. Loeb says Yahoo is embroiled in a “debacle” after it acknowledged that it had misrepresented Thompson and Hart’s college degrees. It said in a proxy and on the website that Thompson had a bachelor...

Yahoo’s effort to make peace with hedge fund Third Point, the company’s staunchest critic and owner of 5.8% of the voting shares, was a bust. The struggling Internet giant hoped to end Third Point’s planned proxy fight by naming three independent directors — including former Discovery COO and Fox Entertainment exec Peter Liguori — and giving the fund a say in the choice of two other directors. Yahoo says that ”there is value in avoiding the cost and distraction that inevitably accompanies a proxy fight.” But Third Point rejected the plan, saying that it shows “one of Yahoo!’s paramount principles of corporate governance is ‘Shareholders not welcome’.” That leaves the fund with “no choice but to take our case directly to our fellow shareholders…Yahoo!’s shareholders deserve a voice and a choice. We intend to provide them with one at this year’s Annual Meeting.” Third Point’s...

San Diego police are investigating the death of 58-year-old Caligula actress Anneka Di Lorenzo (aka Anneka Vasta), whose body was found Jan. 4 by joggers on a military training beach in San Diego County. Di Lorenzo appeared in a handful of "exploitation" movies of the '70s, most notably as Roman Empress Messalina in both Tinto Brass' Caligula and Bruno Corbucci's Messalina, Empress of Rome. Investigators are trying to figure out how Di Lorenzo/Vasta, a resident of the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks, ended up in the water. Her car and belongings were found atop a bluff; had she jumped, investigators say that her body wouldn't have landed in the water because the tide doesn't come up that far. In Caligula, the beautiful, sculptural Di Lorenzo was featured in a memorable lesbian sex scene with Lori Wagner. Other credits, film and otherwise, include (with her last name...

Innovation is at the top of agendas for governments in the U.S. and U.K. Now the U.K. has sprung into action again with its $82 million Growth and Innovation Fund (Gif), launched today to help businesses drive economic growth in the U.K.
“This government understands that to rebalance and grow our economy, we need to tackle the skills shortages that hold companies back. Through this fund, we will support employers that take collective action to overcome these blockages to expansion, said Secretary of State Vince Cable. “By putting the employer voice at the heart of the process, we will reward inventive approaches to training that deliver real help to get business moving.”
The focus of the investment is on advancing the breadth of skills of the U.K. workforce--the thinking is that more competent and knowledgeable workers will lead to more experimentation and innovation.

Us screenwriter whose life was often wilder than his own scripts
William Norton, who has died aged 85, was a screenwriter whose pre- and post-Hollywood adventures surpassed anything he imagined for the screen. The exploits of the virile stars Burt Lancaster, Burt Reynolds, John Wayne and Gene Hackman, tracking down villains in his screenplays, pale in comparison to Norton's time as a gunrunner in Latin America and Ireland.
Norton was born in Ogden, Utah, where his parents (Irish Catholics) were ranchers who lost their land in the Depression. They moved to California, where Norton excelled at high school, until he was expelled because he had a child by a fellow student, Betty Conklin. The 18-year-olds married, just before he joined the army, serving in France and Germany during the second world war.
