“Act of God,” the opening track of the Gossip’s first studio album in 12 years, has all the hallmarks of the trio’s music: an upbeat disco groove, gothic post-punk undertones, and, of course, Beth Ditto’s soulful voice. So does the next track. And the next. By the end of Real Power, it’s clear that, for better or worse, the album arrives as more of the same.
The 11 tracks here range from shimmery summer pop anthems to chugging disco songs, each as lively and bubbly as the last. “Turn the Card Slowly” features some novel, Hawaiian-inspired slide guitar (the album was recorded in part in producer Rick Rubin’s studio in Kauai), but it feels clunky and out of place amid what otherwise sounds like a typical Gossip song.

Gossip are back: The Portland pop-rock trio have announced Real Power, their first album in 11 years. Ahead of its release on March 22nd, they’ve shared the lead single “Crazy Again.”
For the long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s A Joyful Noise, the members of Gossip turned to megahit producer Rick Rubin at his home studio in Kauai. Recording began in 2019, though the pandemic put halts on the project; it seems like the result was worth the wait, however, with the album described as an “11-track celebration of the galvanizing might of music, the joy of creative expression, and the power of chosen family in the aftermath of collective and personal trauma.”
“When we began, so much about Gossip was about running away — that was always in the music,” vocalist Beth Ditto explains in a press release. “We survived. We came from nothing, and we got the fuck out of there. And...

The new Apple TV+ series “The Buccaneers” may take place in the 1870s, but the soundtrack is downright modern.
Adapted from Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel, “The Buccaneers” centers on young American women descended from old English society who are making waves in both America and England. Kristine Froseth plays Annabelle “Nan” St. George, the central character who finds herself caught in a love triangle between two very different men — Guy Thwarte (Matthew Broome) and Theo (Guy Remmers) who is a Duke. Marriage is the last thing on Nan’s mind until she meets first Guy, and then Theo.
Other ensemble stars include Alisha Boe as Conchitta Closson, Imogen Waterhouse as Virginia “Jinny” St. George, Josie Totah as Mabel Elmsworth and Aubri Ibrag as Lizzy Elmsworth. The St. Georges face pressure from their mother (Christina Hendricks) to find husbands wealthy enough to take care of them once they marry. This...

Fox needs new successful drama series. Last season, the renewals of some of the network's highest-rated drama series, came down to the wire. The network doesn't own them, so there's less profit. Monarch, however, is fully owned by Fox Entertainment, so even if the ratings aren't the best, this show could have a financial advantage when renewal time comes around. Will Monarch be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

It was a short-lived run for the Romans’ country music dynasty, as Fox has canceled Monarch after just one season. As reported by Deadline, Monarch will not be returning for a second season. The show had gone through a number of changes since it was originally filmed during the pandemic. Initially, it was set for a January 2022 launch but was pushed back as a result of Covid-19. It was then redesigned as a shorter 11-episode series. Created by Melissa London Hilfers, the musical drama revolved around Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and Albie Roman (Trace Adkins), the heads of a country music empire, and their daughter Nicky Roman (Anna Friel), who does all she can to protect the family’s reign in country music while ensuring her own stardom. The drama also starred Joshua Sasse, Beth Ditto, Iñigo Pascual, Meagan Holder, Eva Amurri, Emma Milani, and Martha Higareda. It featured guest appearances...

The Roman Family's story will be incomplete on Fox.
According to Deadline, Monarch has been canceled after one season.
The news dropped just one day after the Monarch Season 1 finale, which was another shocking hour of the Country Music drama series.
Monarch launched in the fall, despite being initially set to premiere much earlier this year.
At the time of the delay, Fox noted that it wanted to give the show more time for promotion.
The series debuted with a football lerad-in back in early September with 4 million viewers and a 0.91 rating, with the premiere going on to reach much higher numbers with encores and delayed viewing factored in.
Unfortunately, the show failed to garner much traction in its regular Tuesdays at 9 p.m. time period, with the series overall averaging 1.9 million viewers and a 0.3 rating
The finale on Tuesday managed 1.6 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.

Fox’s first-year series Monarch is finished.
The network canceled the family drama set in the world of country music after a single season. The show’s season — now series — finale aired Tuesday night.
Monarch had initially been slated to premiere in January 2022 with the NFL’s NFC championship game as its lead-in. A few weeks before its debut, however, Fox pulled the show from that spot and moved it to the fall, citing pandemic-related concerns that production might be interrupted.
It premiered following an NFL telecast Sept. 11 and pulled in decent ratings but was unable to keep that audience once it moved to its regular time period on Tuesday nights. Monarch was designed to have a shorter run than shows like 911 or its lead-in The Resident, but it was also Fox’s first fully owned scripted series since the network split...

“Monarch,” the country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins, has been canceled after one season on Fox, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show will not return for a second season and will end after Tuesday night’s season – now series – finale.
“Monarch” aimed to be a soapy character drama in the vein of “Nashville” about The Romans, billed as the first family of country music who have built a recording dynasty across generations. But when their dynasty’s reign is put in jeopardy, the family’s matriarch Nicolette Roman (Anna Friel) stops at nothing to restore their family’s legacy.
And though the season premiere was Fox’s most-watched scripted series debut in three years, seen by 3.8 million viewers with a 0.8 score in the key demo, its remaining 10 episodes struggled and averaged far below that initial high mark. The premiere got a big bump following an NFL double header...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Monarch Episode 7, “About Last Night.”] Monarch answers the questions we’ve had through the first six episodes: Who’s dead, and what exactly happened? The body is Nicky’s (Anna Friel) ex-husband Clive (Adam Croasdell), but there are a few steps before he’s buried. First, he attacks Nicky, and Gigi (Beth Ditto) intervenes, hitting him in the head with the award seen in a previous flashforward. Then, Albie (Trace Adkins) goes to bury him, only for it to turn out that Clive’s not as dead as he thought … yet. The Roman patriarch has to put a few bullets in him to finish the job. Showrunner Jon Feldman takes us inside that reveal and teases what’s ahead. When did you know you’d be killing off Clive? Jon Feldman: As we started to undergo this murder mystery subplot, we went through all the possible suspects and potential people...

“How do we make it uniquely ‘Monarch’?” That’s the question music supervisor Amanda Krieg Thomas asks herself before getting to work on each episode of Fox’s new drama series about a country music dynasty.
The answer is three-pronged: by having the cast tackle country classics, by sprinkling in a selection of unexpected pop covers, and, on the licensing side, by championing upcoming country artists.
“We really wanted to focus on covers because that’s a strong entry point,” Thomas says, before elaborating on her mandate: “Always be unexpected, always feature different eras and styles.” By that criteria, episode 3, which aired Tuesday night, was a resounding success. Beginning with a twangy take on Lizzo’s “Juice,” the show segued into a soaring rendition of Faith Hill’s “Breathe.” Throw in guest star Tanya Tucker singing “Delta Dawn” and a Miranda Lambert hit from the ‘00s, and you have a decidedly eclectic lineup.

“Monarch’s” Luke Roman (Joshua Sasse) found himself dealing with a diva situation in last week’s episode of the Fox country music drama, when backstage at his mother’s memorial service, Shania Twain (playing herself) refused to perform. Twain didn’t want to hit the stage because she and the late Dottie Roman (Susan Sarandon) were frenemies after – in this universe – Dottie stole “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.”
“Your mother was never nice to me. Bitch stole my song,” Twain quipped to Sasse’s character Luke. And the whole scene ended up being a very unique experience, Sasse said.
“It was hilarious. It was just fantastic,” Sasse told TheWrap. “We didn’t really talk before we went in, she’d just flown in from Switzerland, where she lives. And as the day happened, I was already in the dressing room waiting for it to happen, and so we...

Exclusive: Anyone who tuned into the first two episodes of Monarch, Fox’s primetime soap that stars Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins as the king and queen of country music, saw uncomfortable parallels to the real-life death of Naomi Judd. Besides depicting how Dottie Cantrell Roman (Sarandon) orchestrates her own suicide in the premiere, the drama’s second episode on September 20 featured a funeral that was meticulously organized by Dottie before her death — just like what Judd did before committing suicide in April.
The fictitious funeral in Monarch even featured the popular Judd song “Love Can Build a Bridge,” which was sung by Wynonna Judd during the televised memorial for her mom.
Here, Monarch executive producer Jon Feldman, who replaced Michael Rauch on the drama last November, talks about the “eerie” coincidences in the series’ first two episodes and whether there was any talk about changing certain scenes after Judd’s passing.

“Yes, I’m dying”.
That’s the stark tabloid headline People magazine runs in gigantic letters alongside a photo of Dottie Roman in the first episode of Monarch, Fox’s lavish new musical soap about a ruthless country music dynasty.
Dottie, played by Susan Sarandon with ballsy swagger and a closer-to-God blowout, seethes over the cover story about her own terminal cancer as she primps for her last ever awards show. She’s the “queen of country music” – think Dolly Parton big – and she’s determined to go out with a smile on her face, even if it’s as fake as her outrage. Dottie leaked the story to the press herself, we eventually learn. She probably even signed off on the picture – red lips pursed in defiance, peeking out from under the wide brim of her signature cowboy hat with its diamante band. Everything in the cloistered world of country music runs through Dottie.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Monarch series premiere “Stop at Nothing.”] Did Monarch just kill off Susan Sarandon in the first episode?! Well, here’s what we know. Sarandon’s Dottie has cancer and decides she wants to die “on her own terms,” turning to daughter Nicky (Anna Friel) to help here. Nicky does, reluctantly. When her sister Gigi (Beth Ditto) walks in at the end, Nicky says Dottie’s gone. Meanwhile, three months later, someone is definitely dead, and Albie’s (Trace Adkins) burying a body. So what’s next after that dramatic premiere? TV Insider turned to showrunner Jon Feldman to find out. Why kill off Dottie in the premiere? Jon Feldman: You’re gonna have to tune in to future episodes to see what happened to her. All will be revealed soon enough, but I will say that Susan’s gonna appear in multiple episodes over the course of the first season...

Fox kicked off a country music game of thrones on Sunday with a sneak peek at the premiere of Monarch, a twisted family drama where the only thing bigger than the hair… are the secrets.
Episode 1 introduces viewers to the Romans, the self-described “first family of country music,” led by egomaniac Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and her husband Albie (Trace Adkins), who’s basically the human equivalent of a dirt road. On the surface, Dottie and Albie have the perfect life, assuming you look past her terminal cancer diagnosis, his history of cheating, and the fractured relationships they’ve cultivated with their understandably screwed-up kids.

Fox heads to the heart of Texas on Sunday night, blending country music with family squabbles and raw ambition in its new primetime drama “Monarch.”
Debuting the first of its two-episode premiere right after the Fox NFL doubleheader, “Monarch” follows the Roman family members as they strive to maintain their first family of country music status, established by matriarch Dottie Cantrell Roman (Susan Sarandon) and Albie Roman (Trace Adkins).
“So the original inspiration was I thought, ‘What if I reimagined the Romanov dynasty as a family of country stars in Austin, Texas?’” executive producer and creator Melissa London Hilfers told TheWrap of the show’s inspiration. “And I wanted it to be a big, opulent, multi-generational drama.”

It’s more a public service than a spoiler to reveal that no matter how Fox is promoting the show, polarizing Oscar winner Susan Sarandon is truly not the primary star of the new musical soap opera Monarch.
Armed with this knowledge, everybody comes out ahead. Sarandon haters can tune into Monarch without fear of an excess of Susan Sarandon; Sarandon fans, the real winners here, can safely skip Monarch entirely.
Although it obviously and rather desperately wants to be Empire only with country music, Monarch is actually just protracted mediocre karaoke. Any karaoke aficionado can tell you that mediocre karaoke is the worst karaoke of all. Bad karaoke is drunken, trashy fun. Great karaoke is entertaining and musical. Mediocre karaoke? It’s that movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis. (Duets. It’s called Duets.) And Monarch wishes it was even that good.

The prospect of Susan Sarandon leading an “Empire”-style music drama set in the world of country music is an instantly alluring one. Not merely is Sarandon a compelling screen presence (one who FX’s “Feud” proved works well on TV), but the particular contours of her public image as a stalwart leftist activist would seem to rub up intriguingly against her character, a survivor in the culturally conservative world of Nashville.
Bad luck for viewers, then, that Sarandon, largely at a remove from the story for plot reasons, is such a minimally used part of Fox’s new drama “Monarch,” and that the elements that supersede her hold such little interest. Dottie Cantrell Roman and Albie Roman, played by Sarandon and Trace Adkins, are the parents to three children, two of them rival vocalists (Anna Friel and Beth Ditto); Dottie and Albie’s son (Joshua Sasse) must try to...

This is an excerpt from TV Guide Magazine’s 2022 Fall Preview issue. For more first looks at fall’s new shows, pick up the issue, on newsstands Thursday, August 25. “I’ve done things that can never be forgiven,” confesses glamorous, manipulative matriarch Dottie Roman (Oscar winner Susan Sarandon) in the premiere of the sudsy drama Monarch about a superstar country music dynasty. Turns out, everyone in this bickering yet loving Texas clan is hiding a sin or two — from adultery to straight-up murder — including her husband, Albie (Grammy nominee Trace Adkins), and favorite daughter Nicky. “The Romans are famous for telling the truth” says exec producer Melissa London Hilfers, “when there’s lies and betrayal.” (Credit: Fox) One of the tragic secrets the family is hiding: Dottie has a terminal illness. She’s chosen obedient Nicky as her successor, which riles up younger daughter and rebel Gigi (singer-songwriter Beth Ditto...

Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker are headed to Fox’s new country music soap, “Monarch”, it was announced Wednesday.
The country music stars will all make special guest appearances throughout the upcoming musical drama’s first season.
“Monarch”, which debuts Sunday, Sept. 11, follows the Roman family, headed by the talented but tough-as-nails “queen of country music” Dottie Cantrell Roman (Susan Sarandon) and her husband, “Texas Truthteller” Albie Roman (Trace Adkins).
Dottie and Albie have created a country music dynasty, but even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. When their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Anna Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

This list of guest stars does impress us much. Country music legends Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker are set to guest star on the first season of Fox's Monarch. In the trailer for the new series, which stars Susan Sarandon as fictional country music superstar Dottie Cantrell Roman, the Nashville icons—who seem to be playing themselves—appear alongside regular cast members, which also include Trace Adkins, Anna Friel, Beth Ditto and Joshua Sasse. Monarch follows Dottie and her husband Albie Roman (Adkins) as they build a country music empire—but the rise to the top is filled with enough drama to fill a ten gallon hat. "I...
