Jessica Chastain is set to throw herself into the role of a Hollywood legend, with Deadline reporting that the Zero Dark Thirty star will play the title role in Seducing Ingrid Bergman. The film—based on a 2012 historical novel by Chris Greenhalgh, which fictionalized the viewpoints of its two leads—tracks the extramarital romantic entanglements between the Casablanca actress and photographer Robert Capa, which began in Paris in the aftermath of World War II, and continued when they both returned to the States in the era of the McCarthy Communism witch hunts.
(Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but Capa is a pretty fascinating figure in his own right; he grew up in Europe, departing Hungary, and then Germany, as the rise of fascism spread. As a combat photographer, he threw himself into situations of almost unimaginable danger; most notably, he was the only press ...

Though he’s currently preoccupied giving Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine an appropriate swan song as the actor prepares to hang up his adamantium claws, James Mangold is already eyeing a very different kind of project. Deadline reports that the versatile helmer will tackle an adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh’s Seducing Ingrid Bergman, possibly to be titled Blood and Champagne, about the heated love affair between actress Bergman and war photographer Robert Capa.
Set in 1945 in post-wwii Paris, the pic will focus on a pivotal time in the Casablanca actress’ life; she would subsequently become a tabloid sensation after launching into an affair with director Roberto Rossellini.
Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco) wrote the script for the historical romance and will also produce.

...and then there were three. Photographer Robert Capa has been a subject that Hollywood has been trying to crack for years. Michael Mann has had a long developing project about the man, Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell were linked to another movie titled "Close Enough," but nothing has been heard about that one since 2013, and now James Mangold has a movie brewing. The Wrap reports that the filmmaker will direct "Seducing Ingrid Bergman." Penned by Arash Amel ("Grace Of Monaco"), the 2014 Black List script is based on the novel by Chris Greenhalgh, and follows Capa's romance with the famed actress. Here's the book synopsis: June 1945. When Ingrid Bergman walks into the lobby of the Ritz hotel in Paris, war photographer Robert Capa is enchanted. From the moment he slips a mischievous invitation to dinner under her door, the two find themselves helplessly attracted. Played out against the cafés and nightclubs of post-war Paris and the.

James Mangold is a director who likes to hop among genres: he’s tackled dramas of all stripes, Westerns, biopics and the superheroic likes of The Wolverine. He’s blending a couple of those for a potential future project, lining up an adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh’s book Seducing Ingrid Bergman.Arash Amel has written the script for the embryonic film, which chronicles the passionate, secretive romance between the iconic actress and noted war photographer Robert Capa in post-World War II Paris, just before the Cold War kicked in. The script has been floating around since at least 2013, and follows the period where Bergman’s image began to shift from her wholesome earlier days to being denounced by the Us Senate for loose morals (truly something of an ironic juxtaposition, there.) According to Deadline, Mangold has wanted to call the eventual film Blood And Champagne, but he may not get his wish,...

Yrf Entertainment will remake the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Sujoy Ghosh directed and Vidya Balan starrer Kahaani, for Western and international audiences as “Deity”.
One of the coolest things is that “Deity” will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”).
The movie is a thriller about an American woman who goes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds herself at the centre of a dangerous conspiracy. The story unfolds in the context of a colourful, week-long festival.
An excited Sujoy Ghosh said, “It’s an incredible step by Yrf. Years back Aditya Chopra had said he wanted to make ‘Kahaani’ for a global audience… I thought he was kidding. But obviously not. Rating (out of 5): ***½
From the kaleidoscopic credits sequence -- gorgeous but approaching the headache-inducing -- it's clear that we're in for some visual splendor. And Netherlands-born adapter (of Chris Greenhalgh's novel) and director Jan Kounen certainly delivers on that promise: Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is perhaps the most beautiful film of the year -- maybe several -- in terms of art direction, costumes and sets (including wallpaper and props). I am not being facetious: There is a lot be said for sheer beauty and taste regarding surroundings, particularly when all this is captured as stunningly as it is here (the widescreen cinematography is by David Ungaro).

This is a polished but unmoving account of the affair between two 20th-century greats
There's a wonderful moment in Clint Eastwood's Bird, when Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie make an expedition one night to the Los Angeles home of their idol, Igor Stravinsky. They ring the bell at the front garden gate and stand in the shadows, afraid to approach the great man when he appears in the doorway in that famous hook-nosed silhouette. You sense their awe in the presence of a God‑like figure who still answers his own doorbell.
Adapted by the British writer Chris Greenhalgh from his speculative novel, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky takes us back to the second decade of the 20th century, when the basis of the Stravinsky legend was being laid and more or less to the point where last year's Coco Before Chanel ends. “Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky” is a study in wry smiles, passionate looks and the fiery temperament of two 20thCentury icons. The movie is based on the fictional novel “Coco & Igor” by Chris Greenhalgh, who also wrote the screenplay. It explores the rumored affair between the famous pair outside of Paris in 1920. The film starts in 1913 with the debut of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”. The choreography was audacious and the music was pulsating. It was however a bit too much for the audience as they rioted. Back then the crowd expected their ballet more demure and not so aggressive. Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelson) was crushed by this supposed failure and angry at choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (Marek Kossakowski). All the while, Chanel (Anna Mouglasis) sat mesmerized in the crowd with her lover Boy Capel (Anatole Taubman).

You're definitely going to hate Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky. The characters. And that's a good thing, for the performers did their job in getting a reaction out of an audience. Released shortly after Coco before Chanel, this does act as a sequel covering the life of the famed fashion designer. The flick is adapted from the novel by Chris Greenhalgh.
Period pieces require attention to detail from the producer and director. Chanel and Igor did a decent job in depicting the correct atmosphere of 1920's Paris. The mannerisms of the characters seemed to fit the description of what these two real people were like back then. Not sure if this needed to be a 120 minute presentation. 90 minutes would have sufficed.
The date is 1913 and Coco Chanel is starting to become a household name. Coco (Anna Mougalis) attends a play, The Rite of Spring, scored by...

At first I thought only a couple films were opening in Austin this week, but I was mistaken. The diversity couldn't be greater, from standard family fare to existentialism, and more Swedish thrillers. And guess what? We've seen most of 'em, to help you decide which ones to catch now, or later.
Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky -- I'm not up for yet another Coco Chanel flick, but Mads Mikkelsen is in it. Chris Greenhalgh adapted his novel Coco & Igor for director Jan Kounen. I need to read Debbie's review, and I recommend you do, too. (Arbor)
Daddy Longlegs -- As part of the SXSW Presents series, Alamo hosts a limited run of the latest film from the Safdie brothers. The semi-autobiographical story features Ronnie Bernstein (director of Frownland, which played SXSW 2007) as a father trying to get his annual two-week visitation time with his kids to work. The movie played...

Another chapter in the life of history's most influential woman in fashion continues with the screen adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh's 2002 novel Coco & Igor as Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (French title: Chanel Coco & Igor Stravinsky). This dramatization of Chanel's alleged affair with a man as influential and diverse as herself picks up not long after where last year's critically acclaimed by Anne Fontaine, Coco Before Chanel, ends. Although the two films have much in common, there's less appeal and passion to this adaptation.
Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky begins with a scandal, but not quite the one immediately expected -- the 1913 Paris premiere of Stravinsky’s modernist ballet, "Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring)." Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen) is nervously awaiting for the curtain to rise as Ballet Russes impresario/founder Sergei Diaghilev (Grigori Manoukov) and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (Marek Kossakowski) are frantically directing the dancers and orchestra. Within the first act,...

Picking up where Anne Fontaine’s Coco Before Chanel left off, Jan Kounen’s Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky provides a dual portrait of two icons of the 1920s, who had a brief, passionate romance that coincided with highpoints of their respective careers.
The film opens with a scene depicting the scandalous 1913 Paris premiere of Stravinsky’s legendary ballet “The Rites of Spring”, with its commissioner Sergei Diaghilev (Grigori Manukov) seen pacing nervously. Fearful of rejection, Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen) remains backstage, being comforted by his wife and musical adviser, Catherine (Elena Morozova). The scene uses rhythmic editing to create excitement and drama, cutting between the orchestra, dancers and the audience. As the music becomes increasingly confronting, the audience becomes increasingly aggravated by the crashing, percussive score. Dismissed by many at the time as barbarous trash, it was later recognized as a defining moment in the split between romantic and modern music,...

In his stylish new chamber drama Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, which closed the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Dutch-born filmmaker Jan Kounen (Dobermann) observes the hothouse affair between married modernist composer-in-exile Igor Stravinsky and legendary French couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (played by Audrey Tautou in last year’s Coco Before Chanel). Based on a novel by Chris Greenhalgh, the film depicts a collision of oil-and-water egos: the brooding composer meets his obscure object of desire in the fiercely independent-minded Chanel, who proves to be forward-thinking about love and as fully immersed in her own art. Prior to tackling this period story of fraught passion and creative fecundity, Kounen was best known on the...

Dutch-born director Jan Kounen does not know why producer Claudie Ossard thought of him for his film about the brief but torrid affair between musical genius Igor Stravinsky and fashion icon Coco Chanel. After all, none of his previous movies had shown any predilection toward classical music or clothing. But when he saw the script, based on the novel Coco and Igor by Chris Greenhalgh, Kounen was smitten. To film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, he dove into the world of the Parisian Belle Epoque and the textures, sights and sounds of Stravinksy and Chanel's world. To get a better sense of Chanel, Kounen was given unprecedented access to her famous apartment 31, rue Cambon in Paris. Designer Karl Lagerfeld made a glimmering black gown offset by a diamond necklace for a final scene, worn by Chanel (played by Anna Mouglalis, a Chanel model). Kounen, who is based in France, says he...
