It’s been 10 years since Steven Universe unlocked his Gem ability to summon a shield as he savored the last of his beloved, now-discontinued frozen treat Cookie Cat.
What Rebecca Sugar initially introduced as a brightly colored animated series about a 13-year-old half-Gem, half-human boy raised by his three extraterrestrial guardians, soon became so much more. In its five-season run on Cartoon Network, “Steven Universe” navigated such themes as same-sex relationships, genocide, consent, grief and Ptsd — a groundbreaking feat for a series with a target demographic of six to 11-year-old boys.
“Everything was very difficult. At the time, that we were exploring Lgbtqia+ characters and storylines — it was really not something that was possible,” Sugar says. “I really do feel that we got to explore everything we’d hoped to, just maybe not in the exact order originally intended.”
She continues, “It’s just such a time capsule of what...

Mascot fighters live and die by the quality of their rosters. Super Smash Bros. probably wouldn’t be half as popular as it is if the game didn’t feature an all-star cast of characters voiced by fitting actors. While MultiVersus doesn’t play exactly like Super Smash Bros., it still recognizes the importance of a strong roster.
MultiVersus may still technically be in its beta period, but the game is quickly expanding its library of playable characters. Currently, the title sports 17 playable characters with an additional two confirmed fighters, Rick and Morty, on the way. Given all the leaks we’ve heard and progress we’ve seen, it’s only a matter of time until even more recognizable characters make the jump to MultiVersus.

George Segal’s final episode of “The Goldbergs” aired Wednesday night, followed by a short tribute to the late actor, who co-starred on the ABC comedy for the last eight seasons.
The 45-second compilation of some of Segal’s memorable scenes from the show was accompanied by the message, “We will miss you, George.” Segal died last month at the age of 87 due to complications from bypass surgery.

The last epic battle of “Steven Universe” isn’t one between friends and foes, but between Steven Universe and himself. After six years and nearly 200 episodes, both the show and character took the time to ask themselves some crucial, existential questions: What happens to a hero after they’ve already saved the day? Who is Steven Universe, and what makes him so special?
Steven’s ensuing spiral into self-doubt, and the gorgeously intuitive way the series guides him out of it, is heady stuff for any show, let alone a kids’ cartoon awash in pastels and uplifting musical breaks. But it’s also a typically ambitious arc for “Steven Universe,” and therefore a fitting one for it to end on — even if watching it wind down with such expert care makes its departure all the more bittersweet.

The title character of Steven Universe is an adolescent boy who, over the course of the Cartoon Network series’ first five seasons, developed the ability to fly, to conjure an impenetrable pink shield out of thin air, to use his saliva to heal injuries short of death (and sometimes beyond), to merge his body with a friend’s (in an act called fusion) so they can become even stronger as one than they are side-by-side, and more. But his greatest power — and the reason the show became so adored that a follow-up film,...

For six years now, Cartoon Network’s “Steven Universe” has been pumping out story after graceful story about the power of love, friendship, cooperation, self-acceptance and trust. Creator Rebecca Sugar, who previously worked on the network’s equally surreal “Adventure Time,” has created and honed an animated galaxy unlike any other, overflowing with distinct characters and complex mythology that sets it apart. So while the show might have started as the simple adventures of a boy and his alien guardians (aka “The Crystal Gems”) navigating what it means to live on Earth, “Steven Universe” has since served up some of TV’s most thoughtful meditations on what it means to be a good and compassionate person — or alien, or half-human/half-alien, or whatever it is that makes your individual atoms so special.

You might not know a lot about Zach Callison unless you are the type that checks just who’s doing the voice roles in some of your favorite animated features. He’s been around for longer than you might think but perhaps not quite long enough to make a huge impact doing much more than voice acting. That being said he has managed to give his voice to a couple of very influential characters that have been important in their shows, so that kind of proves that he is a somebody and is worthy of attention. Given that he’s still pretty young

Thanks to the constant demand of animation, Rebecca Sugar doesn’t often have the chance to talk with kids who watch “Steven Universe.” That’s why her annual visit to San Diego Comic-Con has become such a highlight for her, as she has been moved by the impact her Crystal Gems have had on countless young fans.
“When we do the signings, I get to speak to people one-on-one, and they tell me how the show has become a part of their lives,” the animator and Cartoon Network series creator told TheWrap. “When I meet a kid who tells me how much they love Ruby and Sapphire, it’s just great because they never think there’s anything inherently adult or surprising about their relationship.”

San Diego Comic-Con 2018 is here at last! This week, more than 130,000 convention-goers (many in costumes) will swarm the bay city for all the latest on “Walking Dead,” “Halloween,” “Doctor Who,” and anything and everything comic book related. But with a glut of content, how does one decipher the cream of the comic-con crop? Below is our list of can’t-miss panels at this year’s convention.
Thursday
“The Predator” (Fox)
10:30-11:30 a.m. (Hall H)
Shane Black will tease his irreverent take on the three-decade-old alien franchise. The director has brought a trash-talking sensibility to everything from “Lethal Weapon” to “Iron Man 3.” Expect more of the same as the film focuses on a group of ex-soldiers battling Ptsd and an extraterrestrial hunter. Plus, Black can usually be counted on to say something controversial so the panel is guaranteed to be interesting.
“Doctor Who” (BBC America)
11:45 a.

We’re back with more interviews from Sdcc 2017! In this installment of our Comic Con adventures, Maddy talks to Rebecca Sugar (The creator of Steven Universe — All Hail!) about musical theatre being the voice of Marceline’s mom on Adventure Time, what to expect in Season 3, in what order she first drew the Gems & more.. Then she also chats with the voice of Steven, Zach Callison about stuff like his favorite fan theories and what’s in store for Steven next season. And she doesn’t leave the Cartoon Network press room without speaking with Ian Jones-Quarty about his brand new show, Ok K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, what he learned from working on Adventure Time & Steven’s Universe, and Legend of Zelda on Gameboy.

When “Steven Universe” started on Cartoon Network four years ago, its titular character was a silly, carefree boy (voiced by Zach Callison) singing about the glory of Cookie Cats and his longing to see his alien friends, the Crystal Gems, turn into a Giant Woman. But while he’s kept his fun-loving, kind-hearted spirit intact over the years, he’s had a lot of tough maturing moments to go through. Over the past year, “Steven Universe” has put Steven’s search for purpose front and center as the idealistic image he preserved of his late mother, Rose Quartz, was chipped away.

Steven Universe is one of our favorite cartoons ever and so we were really excited to get to interview them at Comic Con.
We talked to Zach Callison (who is not only the voice of Steven, but also of Prince James in Sofia the First), Ian Jones-Quartey (storyboarded/animator), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl….who Anya has been singing along to since she was 2 years old — no kidding, Deedee was Jasmine in the Aladdin Spectacular at Disney’s California Adventure), Estelle (Garnet), and Rebecca Sugar, the show’s composer & creator, who incidentally was shattering glass ceilings as the first woman to independently create a series for Cartoon Network! What’s really cool about Rebecca, as you’ll find out in our interview is that she’s a bit of a musical theatre geek like us. She not only got a song idea from Sweeney Todd, but she quotes Bob Fosse too.

“What can you do? Kids gotta express themselves.”
Steven Universe, like many fantasy shows, is centered around a mystery. Over the course of two seasons that mystery has come to define the show, permeating its balletic action and complex character dynamics with a gnarled, inscrutable flavor of dread and uncertainty. I’m talking, of course, about the mystery of what the heck is up with Onion.
‘Onion Friend’ makes a strangely satisfying case for a simple answer: Onion’s just a weird kid. Remarkably little happens over the episode’s course. Onion steals some Chaaaaps from Steven, Steven chases Onion to a garage full of paintings of Amethyst, and Steven and Amethyst spend an evening at Onion’s house. It thrives in its details, in its easy, lived-in mood, and in its smart decentralization of the ongoing conflict between Garnet and Pearl. Amethyst has been on the conflict’s sidelines from the beginning.

“Vote For My Dad.”
The stakes have never been lower, but Steven Universe thrives on the small stage. The episode’s plot is simple: Steven and Buck Dewey make T-shirts together, then disagree about what said T-shirts are for. It’s a light, sit-com-esque premise that leads into an earnest look at what growing up can take from us. Nothing explodes, nobody fuses with anybody, and the B-plot is a running discussion about ownership of art and the incompatibility of art and capitalism. Imagine an episode of Dragon Ball Z where Goku just repairs a shoe while arguing with Bulma about the value of the 24-hour news cycle.
The episode begins with Steven proudly showing the Gems his handmade poster advertising guitar lessons from Greg. The Gems react with varying levels of tolerant interest, but down at the Big Donut the ever-hip Buck Dewey sees memetic potential right off the bat.

“Come on, aren’t you your own mom? You can do whatever you want.”
Living up to a parent’s legacy can feel impossible. Steven lives in the void his mother left, a hole in the lives of every one of his parents, biological or otherwise. It’s easy to see the tension between his desire to step up and help ease the pain of his mother’s absence and his desire to be a kid, to befriend monsters, to play, and to be free from responsibility. When the Cool Kids show up to spirit Steven off for a night of joyriding after a day of hard work excavating pieces of Peridot’s wrecked space-hand, it’s a chance to unwind and experience that freedom.
The Cool Kids are a good set of voices to show the pressures exerted on a child by a parent, and by a parent’s reputation.
