The story of Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager who hid in a cramped attic with her family during the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam, is widely known, and amid the atrocities of the Holocaust, Anne’s diary presents a story of resilience and unrealized dreams. Nat Geo’s new limited series “A Small Light” isn’t Anne’s story, though the precocious teen’s legacy is embedded throughout. The brainchild of former “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunners Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, the series is a tale of resistance, activism and humanity. The narrative centers on one tenacious young woman, Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary, who risked everything to save the Frank family, and countless others.
Beautifully shot by Phelan, Susanna Fogel and Leslie Hope, with a slight sepia tone to ground the audience in the time period, the series opens on July 6, 1942, when the Frank family goes into hiding. Miep (Bel Powley...

Filmmaker Drake Doremus is making himself a specialist in love-hate relationships, a kind of cinema couples therapist in such films as Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals, and Newness. With his latest film — Endings, Beginnings — Doremus breaks from the couples path to home in on one character. Her name is Daphne, and she’s drifting into her thirties in Los Angeles (the ultimate place to drift) while having a love-hate relationship with herself. Don’t yawn. As played with banked fire by a terrific Shailene Woodley, Daphne earns our rooting interest.

This isn’t a love triangle romance. Daphne (Shailene Woodley) hates feeling like the star of The Bachelorette upon learning the two men she sparks connections with at a party (Jamie Dornan’s Jack and Sebastian Stan’s Frank) are best friends. If she could, she’d walk away from both since this period of her life was supposed to revolve around a self-prescribed six-month sabbatical from all vices: alcohol and men alike. That’s not who she is, though. She’s never dealt with being alone well and this decision to jump into their respective beds without thinking so soon after breaking off her long-term relationship with Matthew Gray Gubler’s Adrian proves as much. The result should therefore be more complex and personal than a love triangle. It’s about distraction from self-loathing instead.

Love can be complicated — something Shailene Woodley seems to learn in her upcoming romantic drama, Endings, Beginnings.
The film’s first trailer dropped on Wednesday, opening up with Woodley’s idealistic character, Daphne, trying to recover from a recent break-up.
“I really thought that he was gonna be the one,” she says to her friend Ingrid (Kyra Sedgwick).
As Daphne begins to cope with her heartbreak and tries to get her life back on track, she is sucked into an unexpected love triangle when she is reunited with her friend Jack (Jamie Dornan), who later introduces her to his longtime pal Frank (Sebastian Stan).

‘Endings, Beginnings’ Trailer: Shailene Woodley Is Caught in a Love Triangle in Drake Doremus’ Drama
Director Drake Doremus returns to a familiar milieu — the romantic drama — for his newest feature, “Endings, Beginnings,” which stars Shailene Woodley as a woman attempting to get her life on track, who gets caught in a love triangle with a bad boy (Sebastian Stan) and his more erudite best friend (Jamie Dornan).
Co-scripted with novelist Jardine Libaire, the semi-improvised film is produced by Cj Entertainment, the Korean entertainment powerhouse behind Bong Joon Ho’s multiple Oscar-winning “Parasite.”
Acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films after its 2019 Toronto premiere, it will be released it on May 1, 2020. The distributor has released a first official trailer for the film.
The official synopsis for “Endings, Beginnings” reads: “In present day Los Angeles, Daphne (Woodley), a thirty-something woman, navigates love and heartbreak over the course of one year. Daphne becomes intertwined with friends Jack (Dornan) and Frank (Stan) after meeting them at a party. During that time,...

Early in Drake Doremus’ “Endings, Beginnings,” leading lady Daphne (Shailene Woodley) makes a comment to a potential paramour about feeling as if she’s being called to do things a twenty-something might do, like travel the world or join up with the Peace Corps, youthful diversions that a thirty-something like her has no business dabbling in anymore. But it’s all the other things that Daphne spends the film dabbling in — from living in her put-together sister’s guest house or looking for a job when she has no definable skills or even, as is often the crux of a Doremus feature, engaging in dangerous and immature relationships with unsuitable partners — that make it clear which parts of her are stuck in a life she should have stopped living a decade ago.

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 8, “It Happened in Boston”
Written by Mark Richard
Directed by Rosemary Rodriguez
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“It Happened in Boston” picks up directly where last week’s Hell on Wheels ended, with Elam (Common) returning from burning the cholera victims to find that Eva (Robin McLeavy) has given away their baby. This moment from last week is one of the episode’s biggest issues. How could a mother, even one as conflicted as Eva, just hand over her child? True, a place like the Hell on Wheels camp isn’t the best place to raise a child, but something about the decision just doesn’t ring true to the character, especially after the kidnapping left her so devastated. Elam’s reaction, falling into the bottom of a bottle and kicking Eva out, is understandable. He’ll never get Rose back, but even more painful for him,...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 5, “Searchers”
Written by Bruce Marshall Romans
Directed by Neil Labute
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
With the exception of last week’s episode, Hell on Wheels has been the best it’s ever been and “Searchers” might just be the season’s greatest episode. Directed by Neil Labute, the highly emotional episode notches up the usual tension, fear, urgency, and sadness to an almost unbearable level.
Season three’s greatest accomplishment, so far, has been its further exploration of characters who until recently were almost always relegated to the background. We already know that Cullen (Anson Mount) is a complex character but Elam’s fierce, single minded approach to finding his daughter is perfectly played by Common.
Eva (Robin McLeavy) has been a fascinating character this season. Her guilt and fear, as well as her belief that she is cursed, lead to the...

Chicago – AMC’s watchable western series “Hell on Wheels” is just good enough to sustain audience interest despite its meandering plot. As soon as Gustavo Santaolalla’s catchy theme music kicks in over the brooding title sequence, it’s effortless to become absorbed within Joe and Tony Gayton’s handsomely photographed dramatization of the first transcontinental railroad’s epic construction in 1865.
The most intriguing aspect about the series is how it parallels the expansion of the railroad with the colonization of America itself, and how necessary progress was forged by men with little more on their minds than self-serving greed. Financier Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney) has figured out an excellent way to make a fortune off the railroad with the help of government subsidies. Since he’s being paid $16,000 per mile, he intends to add as many arcs and curves to his railroad as possible, rather than have it chug straight to its destination.

Even though the most cynical of critics will tell you that the western is dead, cable viewers and more importantly, AMC thought differently. The cable network that successfully launched Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead gave Hell on Wheels a second season to continue its tale of the Transcontinental Railroad during the Reconstruction era of the United States.
Hell on Wheels fit right in with AMC’s other original scripted dramas, featuring a complex knot of longer, drawn-out serialized narratives instead of quicker, stand-alone stories. It looks at the massive good and bad that the train brought including the greed and corruption; it sheds light on the less than smooth transition for the emancipated slaves and the ever-changing climate of the immigrant.

AMC Rolls Out Hell On Wheels
AMC has begun its big promotional push for it’s new period drama, Hell on Wheels, as it unveils this promotional poster for the series. “Blood will be spilled. Lives will be lost. Men will be ruined.” Those are the words used to stir up interest in an old timey western. But this isn’t cowboys and Indians; this is AMC. We expect a little more than “just a western.”
Hell on Wheels takes place in the wake of the Civil War, following the life of Confederate veteran Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount). Seeking vengeance for his wife’s death at the hands on Union soldiers, Cullen finds himself working on the transcontinental railroad. If that doesn’t intrigue you enough, the show will also feature rap artist Common as an emancipated slave as he works the railroad. Colm Meaney starts as a businessman looking...

AMC has released the first sneak peek to its new series "Hell on Wheels". It features Anson Mount as a former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon who is seeking revenge on the Union troops who killed his family. His quest leads him to the Union Pacific Railroad's westward construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad.
Set against the backdrop of America post-Civil War, the Western drama documents the institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, the show also chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.
Rapper/actor Common stars as freed slave Elam, while former "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine" star Colm Meaney takes the role of big boss man Durant. Other stars joining the cast ensemble are Dominique McElligott, Ben Esler, Philip Burk and Eddie Spears.

In March of this year, the show Hell on Wheels, a Western set during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, started shooting in Alberta. The series is AMC's latest foray into Big Television -- ten episodes have been ordered to begin telling the story of a man seeking to avenge the death of his wife at the hands of Union soldiers. See the first footage, after the break. The cast includes Anson Mount (Hick, the Straw Dogs remake) as Cullen Bohannon, a Confederate soldier in search of revenge; Dominique McElligott (Sam Rockwell's wife in Moon) as Lily Bell, "a housewife caring for her ill husband," and Common playing Elam, a freed slave. Additionally, Colm Meaney, Ben Esler, Eddie Spears, and Philip Burke are cast. You'll see most of them here, in glimpses at least. So how does the footage look? Not bad, so far. There's some good stuff here,...
