“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

“Succession” showrunner Jesse Armstrong may not have been worried to end the Emmy-winning series, but he was “terrified” over lead actor Jeremy Strong’s Method acting dedication to the series finale.
Armstrong revealed during NPR’s “Fresh Air” that Strong’s nearly jumping into the Hudson River for the film’s final scene — in a take that did not make it into the episode — caused alarm on set.
“I was terrified. I was terrified that he might fall in and be injured,” Armstrong said of a moment improvised by Strong in which he stood on the railing and looked down into the water. “He didn’t look like he was going to jump in. But once he climbed over that barrier, when you film, there are generally a lot of health and safety assessments made, and that was not our plan that day.”

[This story contains spoilers from the Succession series finale, “With Open Eyes.”]
Since the Succession series finale released last weekend, creator Jesse Armstrong has only briefly weighed in on the tragic ending he delivered for the Roy family saga.
Speaking after the May 28 episode in HBO’s featurette, Armstrong said Roman (Kieran Culkin) ended in a “reductive, brutal way” as he drinks at a bar; Shiv (Sarah Snook) in a “terrifying, frozen, emotionally barren place” as the wife of newly named Waystar Royco CEO Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and for Kendall (Jeremy Strong), “This will never stop being the central event of his life, central days of his life, central couple years of his life. Maybe he could go on and start a company or do a thing, but the chances of him achieving the sort of corporate status that his dad achieved are very low, and I think that will mark at his whole life.”

This post contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale.
The swift reversals of fortune during the last few episodes of Jesse Armstrong's "Succession" were whiplash-inducing and, in the context of the narrative, darkly satisfying. Though the writers and the cast were phenomenally successful at getting us emotionally invested in the conniving exploits of the Roy siblings, there was always a lingering sense that none of them should "win." Part of this was due to their stunted nature; their media-magnate father, Logan Roy, essentially engineered them to be, at most, half-functional people. They had every advantage at birth, but as we saw throughout the series, they lacked their father's decisiveness. And when the time arrived for them to band together and seize the reins, they sabotaged each other like crabs in a barrel.
Of the three, Jeremy Strong's Kendall came closest to snatching the crown away from Logan. But...

Jeremy Strong almost dove into the Hudson River for the sake of playing Kendall Roy.
During the shocking “Succession” series finale, Kendall (Strong) is shown sitting in Battery Park facing the water after his sister Shiv (Sarah Snook) voted against him taking over as CEO, and subsequently agreeing to the sale of their family legacy conglomerate. Strong shared in a “Succession” exit interview with Vanity Fair that he was inspired by creator Jesse Armstrong’s admiration for poet John Berryman, who died by jumping into a frozen river.
“I tried to go into the water after we cut — I got up from that bench and went as fast as I could over the barrier and onto the pilings, and the actor playing [bodyguard] Colin (Scott Nicholson) raced over,” Strong told Vanity Fair. “I didn’t know I was gonna do that, and he didn’t know, but he raced over and stopped me.

This article contains spoilers for the Succession series finale.
After four seasons of family feuds, conniving CEOs, and media mergers, the final credits have rolled on Succession. As Jesse Armstrong’s corporate comedy ushers in the next era of Waystar Royco and a new king is crowned, it was always clear there were going to be winners and losers. However, spare a thought for the poor prince, Kendall Roy.
While each member of the Roy brood has their pros and cons, it’s arguably Jeremy Strong’s Kendall Roy that bore the brunt of the show’s ability to pull the rug from underneath you. From being the emotional punching bag of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) to the ultimate betrayal of his own sister, Kendall is the one who loses the most in Succession’s political puppetry.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “With Open Eyes,” the series finale of HBO’s “Succession,” now streaming on Max.
The end of “Succession” was filmed on the coldest day of the year.
“The windchill was minus-something in Fahrenheit, and it was absolute purgatory to shoot,” says Mark Mylod, the director and executive producer who has steered many of “Succession’s” greatest episodes. “Jeremy initially was feeling nothing but cold.”
Mylod, who has now helmed all four season finales of the HBO juggernaut, was worried that the last scene — with Jeremy Strong’s Kendall hopelessly walking through Battery Park, and Logan’s leftover bodyguard Colin trailing behind — didn’t feel “weighty enough.”
Then, they followed what has become a leitmotif for Kendall throughout the series and drifted toward the Hudson River, to feel the “gravitational pull of the water on the character.”

Warning: Spoilers for the series finale of “Succession”.
During a conversation about “Succession”‘s series finale, which aired Sunday night, Jeremy Strong revealed there was an alternate ending and that he did indeed drink that awful-looking smoothie that his on-screen sister Shiv [Sarah Snook] served him.
In the scene where the Roy siblings — Shiv (Snook), Kendall (Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) — celebrate their agreement to support Kendall’s claim to the Waystar Royco throne, their late-night gathering in the kitchen of their mother’s Babados home sees Shiv — whom supposedly reenacts a childhood game called “Fit For A King” — mix multiple ingredients into a smoothie for King Kendall to drink.

This article contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale, as well as discussions of sensitive, potentially triggering content.
There were a few different moments in the "Succession" season 4 finale where it seemed like someone might be about to die. When Kendall drank a "meal fit for a king" concocted from a stomach-churning mix of ingredients (some well past their use-by date), for example. Or when Kendall, in a rage, grabbed hold of Roman's head like he was trying to crush his skull. Ultimately, though, the corporate battlefield dealt out its losses in a different way.
For Kendall, that meant Shiv turning on him at the last moment and tipping the board vote in favor of selling Waystar Royco to Swedish tech billionaire Lukas Matsson. To add insult to injury, Roman casually told Kendall that their father never considered Kendall's children to be "real" heirs, since neither of them are his biological children.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains spoilers for the series finale of HBO’s Succession.
Jeremy Strong revealed in the official Succession podcast last night that, yes, he actually tasted that disgusting smoothie concocted by Sarah Snook’s Shiv in Sunday night’s finale.
The finale included a scene of sibling bonding in which Shiv, Strong’s Kendall and Kieran Culkin’s Roman giddily celebrated their agreement to support Kendall’s claim to the Waystar Royco throne in the kitchen of their mother’s Barbados home. During the late-night gathering, Shiv – apparently re-enacting a childhood game called “Fit For A King” – mixed some various ingredients into a foul-looking smoothie for King Kendall to drink.
In the episode, Kendall sips the concoction and then is rewarded by his siblings with the smoothie dumped on his head.

If you watched last night’s devastating series finale of “Succession,” you know that things didn’t exactly play out like Kendall Roy (played masterfully by Jeremy Strong) had hoped. And now the actor is shedding light on how things could have been even darker than what ended up in the episode, telling Kara Swisher on the official “Succession” podcast: “It always to me felt like there’s no coming back from this.”

This post contains spoilers for “With Open Eyes,” the series finale of “Succession.”
“Succession” came to an end on Sunday night with a 90-minute episode that included multiple double-crosses and the biggest Roy family blowout in the show’s history.
After reconnecting at their mother’s home in the Caribbean – including some of the siblings’ most touching moments of the entire series – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook), briefly presented a joint front that gave them enough votes to stop the Waystar Royco sale to GoJo and Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard). But with the votes knotted at six and Shiv as the deciding ballot, the Roys fractured for the last time.
“I love you, I really, I love you—but I can’t fucking stomach you,” Shiv tells Kendall, who quickly spirals out of control at the realization that his life’s dream of taking over the family company has ended.

[This story contains major spoilers for the Succession series finale, “With Open Eyes.”]
Whether or not you “pre-grieved,” the time for mourning has finally arrived: Succession is over, and with it, the story of the Roys.
Heading into the 90-minute series finale, creator Jesse Armstrong’s Emmy-winning drama faced the daunting task of resolving numerous individual and interconnected character arcs, all with an eye on one major question: who will succeed Logan Roy (Brian Cox) at the head of Waystar Royco?
Entering the finale, there were numerous possible answers. Would Kendall (Jeremy Strong) embody his middle name and transform into the killer his dad always told him he’d never become? Would Shiv (Sarah Snook) become the tip of the spear for a successful GoJo deal with Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard), and where would Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) land within that?
How about Roman (Kieran Culkin), so thoroughly anguished over the death of his father that he had to walk out into an ocean...

This article contains spoilers for Succession season 4 episode 9.
It’s one minute to midnight on the doomsday clock of HBO’s Succession, as Jesse Armstrong’s series heads into its finale after four seasons of watching the Roy family tear each other apart. Logan Roy (Brian Cox) might’ve bowed out early, and while we wait with bated breath to see who will be his true successor, an unlikely horse is coming up the outside of this race.
While most of “Church and State” was taken up by Logan’s funeral, the Roy kids couldn’t even bury their father without things turning to business. [This story contains major spoilers from the penultimate episode of Succession, “Church and State.”]
The final season of Succession has been taking place in consecutive days and the penultimate episode of the HBO series brings with it the day of Logan Roy’s funeral.
Brian Cox had previously talked about how he showed up on set the day they filmed his character’s grand finale in order to throw the media off of the major death spoiler that came earlier in season four of the Emmy-winning drama: “They invented this scene that I would play at this church Uptown, very fancy, big Catholic [church]. … as soon as I got out of the car, [the paparazzi] started clicking away. So immediately, I was able to put off the fact that it was my funeral.”
The celebrity funeral was the focus of “Church and State,” written by creator Jesse Armstrong and directed by Mark Mylod. The major day in the Roy family legacy drew together...

“This is not the end,” Logan shouts, near the end of his rabble-rousing speech on the Atn news floor. “I’m going to build something better — something faster, lighter, meaner, wilder, and I’m going to do it from in here, with you lot.”
Even before Logan (Brian Cox) wraps his fiery tirade by screaming, “You’re fucking pirates” at a room full of Manhattan reporters, it’s clear he’s won them over. The worried glances shared by Greg (Nicholas Braun) and Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) have given way to nodding heads and cautious smiles. In the end, applause breaks out, cheers can be heard, and Greg the Egg is grinning. But like so much of “Succession,” the end result doesn’t signify the truth of what’s transpired.

In the season 4 premiere of "Succession," Logan Roy (Brian Cox) is in rare form. The formidable media mogul has a rare moment of introspection in an unassuming diner. Isolated from his family, he finds solace in one of the few consistent figures in his life: His security guard, Colin (Scott Nicholson). Logan is comforted by his stoic commitment to his work, and uses him as a sounding board to reflect upon life's most pressing question: Is this it?
Logan's birthday party finds him in a lonely place, surrounded by people for whom he has very little love or trust. His decision to sell Waystar has alienated most of his family, and the emotional consequences of a life of cold, calculated business have finally begun to weigh on him. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the Season 4 premiere of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max.
In the season premiere of “Succession” — despite having gotten the deal he seemingly wanted — media titan Logan Roy (Brian Cox) paces through his birthday party, looking lost and miserable. Having pushed away his adult children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) in the Season 3 finale, by totally fucking them over in favor of selling Waystar Royco to Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), Logan is dissatisfied with the party’s attendees: Of his kids, only the absurd Connor (Alan Ruck) is there. He’s surrounded by succubi and suck-ups, and he knows it.
In an interview with Variety, Cox delved into Logan’s thinking in the premiere. “The moroseness is the fact that in a sense, he knows he’s failed in relationship to his children,” Cox said. “He’s not a fool.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 4, Episode 1, “The Munsters.”]
“Succession” sure knows how to take the “happy” out of “happy birthday.” Following last season’s devastating bash for Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the beginning of the end starts with another commemoration, this time absent a vaginal entryway or sippy cup cocktails. Logan (Brian Cox) doesn’t celebrate like his son, though he doesn’t celebrate like he used to, either. Way back when “Succession” first premiered, it was Logan’s 80th birthday. The Roy family gathered at his palatial New York apartment, before heading out in helicopters for a fateful softball game. Now, after the fallout in Tuscany, there’s no warm welcome when Logan comes up the elevator. Three of his kids are on the opposite coast. His wife, Marcia (Hiam Abbass), is in Milan… shopping… forever. The birthday boy shuffles through his many rooms as if looking for an escape, wondering aloud why everyone is so damn happy.

The first premiere of Succession was in 2018 at the NYC complex formerly known as the Time Warner Center. “A lot has happened in those five years. We’ve had a couple of corporate mergers, a global pandemic, a few Emmys,” said Casey Bloys, chairman-ceo of HBO and HBO Max Content at the premiere of the series fourth and final season.
HBO parent Warner Media was sold to AT&T in a deal that closed that year. The telecom giant then sold it to Discovery in 2022. At the Season 3 premiere in October of 2021 the deal to create Warner Bros. Discovery had been announced but not yet closed. “It’s been a wild ride. HBO’s official trailer for Succession season four is full of plotting, backstabbing, and shifting loyalties. In other words, everything we’ve come to expect – and love – about the award-winning drama.
The trailer kicks off with Logan Roy insisting he’s accomplished so much that no one should question how he’s doing. That’s followed by Greg spying on Logan as he circles the trading floor, describing Logan’s actions to Tom on the phone as terrifyingly moseying. “It’s like if Santa Claus was a hitman,” says Greg.
The trailer also includes Kendall suggesting to his siblings that they need to fight Logan by partnering up with Sandi, Stewy, and Pierce – “death wrestling ogres.”

HBO has released the official trailer for “Succession” Season 4, which is now confirmed to be the final season of the hit show.
The new trailer teases the Roy kids’ final battle against their father Logan (Brian Cox), who outmaneuvered them — with some sneaky help from Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) — from stopping the Waystar Royco deal with GoJo in the Season 3 finale.
Here’s the official logline: “The sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is complete. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed.”

Succession is heading to an end.
The hit HBO drama series will come to a conclusion with its fourth season.
Creator Jesse Armstrong broke the news in an interview with The New Yorker.
The series will return for season four on Sunday March 26. The season picks up when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids including Siobhan (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong).
He said, “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said it as soon as I sort of decided, almost when we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said it at the end of the season. I quite like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, without trying to figure things out, or perceiving things in a certain way once they know it’s the final season.

HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys is not opposed to a possible ‘Succession’ spinoff, but argues that it “doesn’t seem like a natural thing.”
“I always say ‘never say never.’ When we started talking about doing a ‘Thrones’ prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done. I had some people internally saying, ‘This is crazy. What are you doing?’ That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George created that lent itself to [spin-offs],” Bloys told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. “There’s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles. It doesn’t seem to me that there’s something in ‘Succession’ where you would go, ‘Let’s follow just this kid’ or whatever. It doesn’t seem like a natural thing to me.
