Look close enough at "The Twilight Zone" and it's clear that events surrounding the making of the show were often as unusual as its otherworldly subject matter. It's not that Rod Serling's science fiction classic was cursed: rather, production of the deeply humane series was often interrupted by deeply human moments. There was that time an episode was improved upon by an actor's injury that forced him to speak out of one side of his mouth, and the fact that veteran Serling named the series without realizing that its title was already an air force term used to describe an especially disorienting moment before landing.
Not every coincidence and unusual set story was serendipitous. In season 1, an actor passed away mid-shoot, and Serling paid out of pocket to reshoot his scenes so he wouldn't appear ill in his final performance. A horrific, preventable accident on the set of "Twilight Zone: The Movie...

The term "auteur theory" was first coined by American critic Andrew Sarris, a phrase he extrapolated from the essays published in Cahiers du Cinéma in the early 1950s by the founding members of the French New Wave. Auteur theory posited that a director stands as the final authorial voice behind a feature film, and not the writer, the editor, or any of the other filmmakers. While many critics over the years have objected to auteur theory (Pauline Kael famously hated it), the language of referring to a film's director as its "one author" has become the default used by pundits and journalists to this day.
Throughout the 2010s, there was a visible push-and-pull when it came to auteur theory. While plenty of striking, important directors put out unique, idiosyncratic works, massive studio franchise pictures stayed at the commercial fore, and individual directors were subservient to all-powerful Higher Ups. When 13-year-old Zoe King’s parents tried to get tickets for her and her sister, Wrenna, 11, to see Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Massachusetts last spring, they, like roughly one in four Swift fans, were out of luck. “They were all sold out or like $3,000,” says Zoe. So when Zoe’s dad, Pat, saw that the concert was coming to movie theaters, he snapped up Friday night seats at a nearby Cinemark theater in Hadley, Massachusetts, for his family and some of the kids’ friends. “We had gone through that torment of trying to buy concert tickets,” says Pat, “So, as soon as I got the email about the movie, I bought them.” Zoe dressed for the screening with a nod to Swift’s Midnights album in dark blue, and Wrenna painted the numbers 1989 on her cheeks. “I kept raining glitter wherever I went,” Zoe says. “I wore a shawl.

Ron Haffkine, a Grammy-winning record producer and manager known for his work with Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, has died. He was 84.
Haffkine died Sunday at his home in Mexico after a brief bout with leukemia and kidney failure, his friend of 50 years, music executive Joel Diamond, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Ron always had an uncanny knack of hearing a hit song in its rawest stage and the rare talent to couple it with the best musicians and then top it off with a meticulous performance by the artist,” Diamond noted.
Haffkine was instrumental in getting Dr. Hook signed by Clive Davis at Columbia Records in the 1970s, and the band led by Dennis Locorriere, George Cummings, the eyepatch-wearing Ray Sawyer and Billy Francis would compile a string of hits that included “Sylvia’s Mother,” “Cover of the Rolling Stone,” “Sharing the Night Together,” “When You’re in Love With a Beautiful Woman,...

Mayor of Malibu Bruce Silverstein blasted Kourtney Kardashian‘s team for lying to the city about the nature of her event in order to obtain a permit to host a promotional party for her wellness brand, Poosh.
The Poolside with Poosh party was held at a mansion in Malibu, California, on Saturday.
Silverstein wrote a lengthy post on Facebook entitled “City of Malibu Continues to Place Celebrities and the Uber Wealthy Over Residents: City Staff Sells Out to Kardashians and Grants Emergency Expedited Permit for Large Event in a Vacant Single-Family Home in Private Neighborhood.”
Silverstein asserts that Kardashian’s event planner claimed the rental was for a baby shower when, in reality, it was used as a venue to promote Kardashian’s wellness brand.
Silverstein wrote, “I understand that the event has been represented to be a baby shower that is being hosted by the owner of the property.

“Access Hollywood” executive producer Mauren Fitzpatrick will be leaving the show after four years, two individuals with knowledge told TheWrap.
Fitzpatrick began helming the NBC entertainment newsmagazine franchise in 2019, taking over running both the taped show and “Access Live” as longtime EP Rob Silverstein exited after 20 years in the position.
Fitzpatrick’s departure follows the exit of production executive Justin Batey, who served as senior executive in charge of production.
Fitzpatrick and Batey’s reasons for the exiting NBCUniversal are unknown at this time. An NBCU representative declined to comment for this article. We were unable to reach Fitzpatrick and Batey for comment.
First joining the franchise as a consultant in early 2018, Fitzpatrick helped develop several concepts and pilots for NBCUniversal’s syndication division, including overseeing development and pilot production for syndicated series “Judge Jerry” and managing development and production for Oxygen’s “Crime Time” pilot.

Spirit Halloween is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and the enthusiasm surrounding the retailer couldn’t have been more clear than during the annual grand opening of its flagship store in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. The parking lot of 6725 Black Horse Pike was literally filled to the brim on the morning of July 29 with families, enthusiasts and even cosplayers eager for their chance to see what Spirit has in store for this Halloween season. You may be thinking: It’s not even August yet, is it really time to start decking the halls with boughs of horror?
“I do not call Halloween a holiday–I call it an event,” says Steven Silverstein, President of Spirit Halloween. “And we are very much a part of that event.”
I managed to catch up with Silverstein as he jovially greeted guests, rallied his team for the incoming waves of shoppers, and even...

Busy Philipps brought a special date to the "Single Drunk Female" season two premiere: her eldest child, Birdie Leigh Silverstein. The actor and her 14-year-old mini-me hit the red carpet together at New York City's Midnight Theatre on April 11 and looked like two peas in a pod while posing for the cameras. Philipps, a new cast addition for the Freeform series, wore a black maxi dress and white blazer, while Birdie wore an orange satin slip dress and flats and later borrowed their mom's blazer.
The following morning, Philipps shared a lengthy Instagram caption about her experience starring in "Single Drunk Female" and mentioned how much fun Birdie had at the season two screening. "Last night at the premiere, Birdie flipped out to meet Ally Sheedy," she wrote, adding that her child also bonded with Sheedy's mother, Charlotte, during the event. "It was so sweet and I think sometimes...

Women and Hollywood founder Melissa Silverstein is launching a weekly podcast centered around interviews with women creatives and will no longer be publishing original stories on the Women and Hollywood blog she founded more than 15 years ago.
The 30-minute podcast will be called In Her Voice, building on Silverstein’s book of the same name about female directors, and will be available everywhere people get their podcasts.
The title of the podcast, Silverstein tells The Hollywood Reporter, also reflects her feeling that the podcast is not about her but about highlighting women in the industry.
“This is about women creatives in the industry, making sure people know their contributions and letting the world know we need to keep going,” Silverstein says. “We can’t take our foot off the pedal because we don’t want to backtrack.”
The main part of the podcast will “be a conversation with one or multiple women creatives,...

Fifty years ago this week — on March 29, 1973, to be exact — the ragged New Jersey country-rock band Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show got their wish: Rolling Stone put them on the cover.
Written by Shel Silverstein, the former Playboy cartoonist and children’s book author, Dr. Hook’s hit “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” featured eyepatch-wearing singer Ray Sawyer on lead vocals, singing lines about buying “five copies for my mother” of the magazine. The band’s actual cover appearance was a colorful caricature of Sawyer and two of his six bandmates,...

The home in question is a mansion in North Beverly Park, a gated community in Los Angeles. Wahlberg bought the property for $8.25 million in 2009.
While under his ownership, the home saw numerous upgrades. According to the New York Post, he reportedly added an elevator, a pool cabana, a guest house with an attached garage, and other amenities. It ended up being 30,500 square feet with 12 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms. It also sits on 6.2 acres of land.

AMC Networks will not be continuing its animated science-fiction series “Pantheon,” even though a second season has already been produced. There remains a possibility that the series could be licensed or sold to another platform.
The decision regarding “Pantheon” was made months ago, declared in a list of programming write-offs in early December of last year. The embattled network’s cost-cutting measures include 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizing restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing.
The animated series, which starred the voices of Daniel Dae Kim, Paul Dano, Taylor Schilling and the late William Hurt, joins a growing list of programming cutbacks at the network. Earlier this week, Variety reported that the second season of the Courtney B. Vance series “61st Street” would be scrapped, despite production on four episodes having already been completed. “Invitation to a Bonfire,” an adaptation of Adrienne Celt’s book of the...

The Dutton-verse expands. Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone announced a slew of exciting casting updates on Friday, June 10. Fan favorites Wendy Moniz (Governor Lynelle Perry) and Mo Brings Plenty (Mo) have been upped to series regulars for Season 5, premiering November 13. In addition to their promotions, the Paramount Network series confirmed Josh Lucas will return in the upcoming season in his recurring role as young John Dutton. Jacki Weaver, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Red Silverstein will also be back in the new episodes. Weaver was Kelly Reilly‘s Season 4 adversary Caroline Warner. Rogers plays young Beth Dutton, and Silverstein plays young Rip Wheeler. With that, it seems we’ll be getting more Dutton flashbacks in Yellowstone Season 5, which will also show Beth and Rip’s life as a married pair. But that’s not all. Kai Caster (American Horror Story), Lainey Wilson, Lilli Kay, and 1883 actor Dawn Olivieri have also been added...
