This is a highly competitive filmmaking industry, and there are often numerous obstacles that must be overcome in order to bring a project to life. Few, however, have faced a far more daunting challenge than the team behind the HBO Max series Tokyo Vice. The behind-the-scenes making of this project—created by J. T. Rogers—is a truly inspiring tale that merits a drama series of its own.
Starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe, the crime drama series aired its second season in February of this year. The show’s plot revolves around an American journalist ( Jake Adelstein) stationed in Tokyo who, with the help of a seasoned detective, tracks down the city’s yakuza-run criminal underworld.

Tokyo Vice season 2 has fans on the edge of their seats, since its release in February 2024. As the second season’s plot unravels, the show’s producer Alan Poul, and other crew members are sharing just how they managed to film its second installment in some of Japan’s most difficult-to-access locations.
In a thrilling revelation, the showrunners divulged that a potential yakuza member had paid a visit to the Tokyo Vice set when they were filming in Tokyo’s historic Akasaka district. However, the HBO Max series had already prepared for a dodgy occasion such as this.

Tokyo Vice is back with its highly anticipated season two. Not only are fans and critics describing the second venture as highly addictive and better than its first season. Yet apart from its entertaining and intriguing dive into the Japanese Yakuza culture, the crime show has been hailed for shooting the mixed language show in the land of the Rising Sun itself.

While many shows or movies would avoid filming in the country, using soundstages instead, the Ansel Elgort-starrer series is receiving praise for showing and covering the real Tokyo. But doing so was a mammoth of a task, yet even more difficult was shooting one real-life element that became absolutely crucial for the HBO show.

From the moment the Max team took on Tokyo Vice, their determination was to ensure authenticity and to accurately portray the essence of the story. Thus, what better way to showcase Tokyo Vice than by shooting it in Japan? Although it may have initially sounded like a thrilling adventure, it turned out to be one of the most challenging aspects of the project for the team.

Why Was It So Necessary to Shoot Tokyo Vice in Japan?
What the recent typical pop culture media portrays Japan to be was not the angle Max wanted to approach Tokyo Vice from. Instead, they aimed to delve deep into the extensive crime world and darker aspects of the beautiful land, juxtaposing the serene and aesthetic views with cherry blossoms.

When the skies cleared above Tokyo’s historic Akasaka district late one evening in March 2023, no one in the city of 37 million people could have been more relieved than Masanori Aikawa, the tireless location manager employed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max and its hit TV series Tokyo Vice.
The neo-noir crime drama was then two-thirds of the way through production of its second season on location in Japan, and one of its most ambitious shoots was planned for that night. The production was set to take over a full block of Akasaka’s Esplanade, an old nightlife strip famous for the hundreds of bars and hostess clubs that are packed into its narrow mid-rise buildings. No Japanese TV production — let alone a foreign, Western one — had ever been granted police permission to shoot in Akasaka, which is near many of Tokyo’s most important cultural and political sites. When Peacemaker premiered on Max almost two years ago, it took us into the crazy life of John Cena's Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker. He'd already made an impact in Suicide Squad, and the series treatment was off-the-charts gonzo entertainment.
Infused with goofy, sometimes raunchy humor and the language to match, it is everything you'd expect from a James Gunn production.
As we wait patiently for Peacemaker Season 2, we're rounding up everything we know about what's coming.
Peacemaker Season 2 Renewal Status
Hallelujah! Max officially picked up Peacemaker Season 2 in February 2022. We couldn't have been happier.
Max was undoubtedly happy too because, at the time, the platform revealed the show had been a strong performer, to the surprise of very few.
Along with the renewal came the expected statement of excitement and thanks to the viewership and the network.

Max officially renewed And Just Like That… ahead of its much-anticipated season two finale which will feature the return of Kim Cattrall as Samantha. Season two episode 11 – part two of “The Last Supper” – finally delivers the cameo fans of the original foursome have eagerly anticipated.
Even though Samatha won’t be sharing scenes with her former Sex and the City co-stars, Cattrall will be seen in a cameo, styled by Patricia Field and shot in secret. In an interview on Today with Hoda and Jenna, Kim Cattrall confirmed that shopping in Bergdorf’s and picking out a great outfit for her cameo felt like dipping her toe back in time and having a wonderful afternoon.
However, fans shouldn’t expect Kim Cattrall back for the just-announced third season. It seems this short cameo is a one-off and not a precursor to an extended return as Samantha.

HBO Max, J.J. Abrams, and Latoya Morgan plan to introduce audiences to Duster, a period drama set in the Southwest starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson. Duster is a concept Abrams and Morgan have been kicking around since April 2020, when it nearly got the green light from then HBO Max Chief Content Officer Kevin Reilly. The project remained in limbo since then, with HBO Max labeling it “in development.” The time has come for HBO Max to give Duster a series order after shooting a pilot episode.
Duster stars Rachel Hilson as Nina, the first Black FBI agent, who, in 1972, travels to the Southwest and gains a getaway driver, played by Josh Holloway. Together, the duo aims to take down a crime syndicate taking root in the area. Keith David, Sydney Elisabeth, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, and Benjamin Charles Watson also star.

J.J. Abrams and HBO Max are officially putting a series into gear.
The streamer has picked up Duster, a 1970s-set drama from Abrams and Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor, This Is Us) and Josh Holloway, who worked with Abrams on Lost, head the cast.
Duster is the first series to spring from a nine-figure film and TV deal Abrams’ Bad Robot company signed with WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) in 2019. In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected 200 million-plus budget.

Last week, we learned that Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, have been hired to serve as the showrunners on the HBO Max streaming series called Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to the adaptations of Stephen King’s It that were directed by Andy Muschietti. Now Variety has asked HBO Max’s head of originals Sarah Aubrey for an update on the status of the show – and her answer included the words “demented”, “scares”, and “terrify”.
Here’s what Aubrey had to say: “We have been working with Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, Andy Muschietti and (his producing partner / sister) Barbara Muschietti very closely…They’re so deep into this mythology and they have such a firm handle on the storytelling around these characters and also the demented scares that they’re putting into things.

One of the most unlikely impressive performances of the year belongs to a member of Batman’s rogue gallery. Usually, the instinct is to think this refers to the Joker; however, 2022’s The Batman showcased a newer take on the Penguin character, referred to only as “Oz” in the film. The amazing part is that audiences either found out or constantly questioned that it was none other than Colin Farrell in an unbelievably unrecognizable performance.
Farrell, while promoting The Banshees of Inisherin, spoke about how he was selfish to want to keep playing the character, and the actor has finally got his wish granted with the upcoming Penguin spin-off series set to appear on HBO Max. It was previously thought that the spin-off was to be a prequel outlining how the villain became a lackey for the bigger mob boss of Gotham City, Carmine Falcone. NATPE, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, has decided to cancel its annual January conference.
Held for more than a decade in Miami, and before that in a rotation of cities like New Orleans and Las Vegas, the January confab next year was set to unfold at the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas. While the locale was well off the beaten path for an industry trade show, it was chosen due to the onerous economics of putting on a conference at Miami’s Fontainebleau Hotel and the neighboring Eden Roc.
Covid wiped out the 2021 and 2022 editions of the January event and put NATPE on its back foot financially. The plug was pulled in January 2022 just days before the scheduled start, as the Omicron variant forced the Sundance Film Festival and other industry happenings to go virtual or dark.
