Upon the end of HBO drama "The Sopranos," with the falsetto notes of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" still hanging in the air, executive producer and writer Terence Winter was searching for his next project. The massively popular mafia-centric show had concluded at the top of the TV heap, even called "the greatest pop-culture masterpiece of its day" by Peter Biskind. Its complicated leading man Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) was more than the head of an organized criminal clan; he was a husband and a father living in the suburbs, complexities "The Sopranos" explored thoroughly over its six seasons.
Already an Emmy Award-winner for his work on "The Sopranos," Winter was quickly hired by HBO to develop a new series that would fit right in among the network's showy big-budget genre pieces like "Game of Thrones." Upon reading Nelson Johnson's 2002 book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City,...

Casino waitresses are effectively "sex objects" and can be fired for putting on too much weight, according to a ruling last week by an Atlantic County Superior Court judge in New Jersey.
Superior Court Judge Nelson Johnson's decision ended the legal battle between popular Atlantic City casino the Borgata and a group of 22 former cocktail servers known collectively as "Borgata Babes."
The 22 Babes filed suit against the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa alleging weight discrimination, according to the Los Angeles Times. The women specifically targeted a casino policy that prohibited "Borgata Babes" from gaining more than 7 percent of their original body weight.
The Press of Atlantic City reports that in court documents, the Babes claimed that the stringent guidelines sometimes forced drastic measures. Waitresses were even told to take laxatives before to mandatory weigh-ins or stop taking prescription medications, according to the site.

Even in the dramatic rise of American television there are some standout examples of the very highest quality, when we see the particular alignment of a strong and creative producer, an actor perfect for the leading role and the creation of a seductive and intriguing world. Boardwalk Empire is one such show, and one of the finest programmes on HBO, or any other channel at the moment.

Michael Chabon's "The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" could be coming to a screen near you.
According to Collider, director Stephen Daldry wants to turn the novel into a miniseries for HBO.
"I would love to do something for TV," he said. "I wanna do Kavalier & Clay on HBO as an eight-parter. It'll be so much better as a series, honestly."
There's just one catch -- Daldry doesn't have the rights to the book. Paramount does -- though Daldry himself was signed on at one point to direct a film version, the project has continued to languish.
"I spent a year working on it with Michael Chabon, so we're pretty close," Daldry told Collider. "And the rights, good question. Will Paramount give them to me? I don't know. It'll be a really good one. It'd go great with 'Boardwalk Empire.'"

Sky retained a large amount of secrecy surrounding the launch of their new production. Martin Scorsese and Terence Winter's Golden Globe-winning series Boardwalk Empire is a fascinating look at the birth of Us gangster mythology
Atlantic City, 16 January 1920, and the world is about to change. The great war has ended, prohibition is about to be passed, women are fighting for the right to vote and in this small seaside enclave a battle is brewing for control not just of the city's finances but, more importantly, for its hearts and minds.
While the teeming boardwalk along the beachfront offers all manner of entertainment from showgirls to astrologers, freak shows to drinking dens, inside City Hall, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the city treasurer, is juggling a desire for power with a belief in trying to do the right thing even as his former protege Jimmy Darmody returns from the battlefields of Europe determined to make his mark, legally or otherwise. After the brazen robbery of one of his ward bosses, Nucky turns up the heat on Lucky Luciano. In the next "Boardwalk Empire", an emboldened Margaret stands up to Lucy at the dress shop, then accepts an offer from Nucky to change her circumstances.
In Chicago, Al Capone's frustration over family issues spills over into his relationship with Jimmy, who scores points with Johnny Torrio for a bold power play involving mob heavy Charlie Sheridan and the neighborhood of Greektown.
"Family Limitation" airs Sunday, October 24 on HBO.
The success of the series has brought luck for the novel it is based upon. "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City", the 2002 published-novel by Nelson Johnson, has debuted at New York Times paperback nonfiction best seller list on October 17. "We are certainly very proud to have our first New York Times best seller," said publisher Plexus President and CEO Thomas H.

A line that resonates late in the opening episode of "Boardwalk Empire" comes when the central figure's protege brings his mentor up short with a stern bit of advice: "You can't be half a gangster, Nucky, not anymore."
The advice isn't welcome. The protege, Michael Pitt's emotionally wounded war veteran Jimmy Darmody, has been overstepping his bounds with the boss, Steve Buscemi's Nucky Thompson -- but it's clearly correct.
In similar fashion, when HBO set out to make the series -- which was renewed Tuesday, two days after attracting 4.8 million viewers (7.1 million including repeats) to become its most-watched premiere of any program in six years -- it realized you can't make half a gangster epic.
That's how HBO came to hire Martin Scorsese to executive produce and direct the 70-minute pilot and budget nearly $20 million for it. (Read THR's review here.)

Sunday night brought a spectacle to the screens of HBO viewers with “Boardwalk Empire’s” premiere. The pilot was directed by Martin Scorsese and Tim Van Patten and starred an impeccably chosen cast including Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt. After weeks of hype and fretting about HBO’s future there’s no reason why this show will not be another hit for the network like “The Sopranos” or the more recent “Treme”. The show was written and produced by Terence Winter the genius behind “The Sopranos”. In a recent interview Winter said “I honestly thought it might never get past the pilot…I just thought it was going to cost far too much to make everything look right.” But it seems that one episode has put the critics and the creators at ease. Having just seen the pilot episode some critics have already decided that “Boardwalk Empire” will rule the new Emmy Awards.

When you think "leading man," Steve Buscemi is probably not the first name that comes to mind. But the career character actor is at the center of HBO's new series "Boardwalk Empire," and he's fantastic.
The series, which premieres at 9 p.m. Et Sunday (Sept. 19), is big in scale -- one of its sets is a huge re-creation of the Atlantic City boardwalk circa 1920 -- and in scope (if you have trouble keeping track of who's who in early episodes, you won't be alone). It's also really, really good -- one of the best new shows of the fall, and one that gets better the deeper you get into it.
Former "Sopranos" writer and executive producer Terence Winter created "Boardwalk Empire" (it's based on a book by Nelson Johnson), and Martin Scorsese directed Sunday's premiere episode. As you might expect from that combination, the show at its core is a gangster tale.

Atlantic City's decadent 1920s heyday inspired HBO's lavish TV series Boardwalk Empire, with a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese. But can it rescue the resort from a recession-hit present?
It is one of the biggest bets ever placed on Atlantic City and, given the New Jersey resort's century-long love affair with vice and gambling, that really is saying something.
Cable television channel HBO has staked tens of millions of dollars on a new drama series set in the seaside town that has long been a byword for corruption, crime and wild times.
Drawing on a backdrop of Atlantic City's 1920s prohibition era heyday, Boardwalk Empire could end up being the biggest drama series HBO has ever produced. The pilot episode, which cost at least $20m, was directed by Martin Scorsese and the series is being scripted by Terence Winter, one of the creative forces behind The Sopranos. HBO has started airing these promos for fantasy series "Game of Thrones" and drama "Boardwalk Empire." "Game of Thrones" is based on the George R.R. Seemingly with his sticky fingers in every criminal activity going, Thompson is dressed to the nines in rounded stiff collar shirts and pinstriped suits, a forerunner to the 1930s movie gangster typified by James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson.

I’ve written before on the subject of why Steve Buscemi deserves chunkier parts. And apparently the folks behind the forthcoming HBO show Boardwalk Empire — a brains trust that includes Martin Scorsese and Sopranos scribe Terence Winter — agree. Certainly Buscemi is front and center in the new trailer for the Prohibition-era gangster show in which he plays criminally-minded Atlantic City notable “Nucky” Johnson.

Based on the book 'Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City' by Nelson Johnson, 'Empire' stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson, the king of Atlantic City. Think one part gangster, one part politician. It was adapted by Emmy-winner Terence Winter of 'The Sopranos,' and premieres this September.
'Boardwalk Empire' also stars Gretchen Mol, Michael Pitt and William Hall. The pilot episode was directed by film legend Martin Scorsese.
The first two trailers for 'Boardwalk Empire' featured no dialogue, so this is quite refreshing.

Coming to HBO in America this Autumn is Boardwalk Empire, a prohibition drama adapted by Terence Winter (The Sopranos) from a Nelson Johnson book. The pilot is directed by Martin Scorsese and the series has currently been picked up for twelve episodes. I’m really hoping this comes to the UK soon as I’m really looking forward to it.
The preview looks great and Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson looks on top form. With the attention to period detail, the impressive cast and the various people involved in this series behind the scenes I’m sure this is going to be fantastic.

With a little help from Jozef Siroka over at Plan d'ensemble, I've come across the teasers of two upcoming TV series from HBO, an American premium cable network. Besides, expect to see a few names that are normally associated to cinema be part of these upcoming projects.
The first one, which is called Boardwalk Empire, is adapted from a book by Nelson Johnson. The TV series is produced by [pause of 5 seconds] Martin Scorsese (he directed the first episode) and written by Terence Winter (The Sopranos). The story is set in Atlantic City in 1920, which means during the dawn of the Prohibition. At that time alcohol couldn't be distributed or sold. Therefore, the TV series chronicles the life of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a man who was both a politician and a gangster. Moreover, the show also stars Kelly MacDonald, Michael Pitt, Stephen Graham and Michael Shannon.

Based on Nelson Johnson's Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City , created by Terence Winter, who won multiple Emmys for his work on The Sopranos (he shared one nomination with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner), and boasting a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese, it's an impossibly well-pedigreed Prohibition epic set against the backdrop of the original Jersey Shore. I'm excited to see Boardwalk Empire. The new HBO series has a pilot directed by Martin Scorsese (who also serves as exec producer) and I can't wait to see what he's turned out from the relatively short shooting schedule offered a TV pilot. I love seeing good feature directors work within constraints they've long since outgrown. Sometimes the results can be energetic and spectacular. Hoping for that from Boardwalk Empire. Now there's a teaser trailer, and the period recreation looks great, at the very least. Check it out below. The show is scripted by Terence Winter based on Nelson Johnson's book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City. The whole thing takes place in Atlantic City during Prohibition, and primarily hinges on Steve Buscemi's character Nucky Johnson. He's based on a real power figure who reigned over Atlantic City for three decades. Also...

Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is a cross between a local politician and a bootlegging gangster, and we get to watch how he runs the city through the political and criminal angles. We'll also get to...

There's more exciting news in the world of TV than movies today, with the greenlighting of the Martin Scorsese-produced show Boardwalk Empire announced. Steve Buscemi's set to star in a show created by The Sopranos writer Terence Winter.Buscemi will play Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the half-gangster, half-politician character who played a huge role in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, where the story is set. It's all based on Nelson Johnson's book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City. The already produced pilot also stars Michael Shannon, Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald and Stephen Graham (as Al Capone), and with Scorsese producing (alongside Mark Wahlberg among others) it's bound to keep attracting rather good talent. Scorsese also directed the pilot, and 11 more episodes will start airing sometime next year.

Sometimes news is just too small scale to make full posts for. Like "Chris Nolan hints at Batman 3 casting..." big deal. But that doesn't mean we don't pay attention. We just compile it all in one meaty gumbo called Multiple Personality Disorder Report. Let's get started.
Considering I've known that Alex Proyas was attached to the new film version of John Christopher's amazing Tripods trilogy for almost a year now I'm not exactly sure why it's all of a sudden considered news. I mean, he's been listed on the project's IMDb page forever. At any rate, it's just good to know that things are still moving along on the project and that Proyas is still involved. [Via. Styd].
Another book series that we were really excited to hear was getting a feature is Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" (which I haven't read but which quietearth swears by). Word from Variety is that Scott Derrickson,...

Piazza's Luciano is a young associate of Arnold Rothstein, a rich, blunt New York businessman who wants in on Nucky's liquor production.
Shannon, repped by CAA and manager Byron Wetzel,...
