He studied with Erich Kleiber, Bruno Walter, and Tulio Serafin. He held positions with the Leningrad Philharmonic, State Opera, and the Bolshoi Theater. In 1959, he became artistic director and conductor of the National Opera of Warsaw. From 1966 to 1976, he was principal conductor of the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen.
