They really went and did it!! Crazy. Central Partnership has unveiled an official trailer for a Russian space movie called The Challenge (in English), made by filmmaker Klim Shipenko. This is the very first film to ever actually shoot in space for real. They've been talking about this for years, a Hollywood pipedream that Russian pulled off first (similar to the space race in the 50s/60s). Tom Cruise still has his own project in space in the works. This Russian director and his lead actress flew up to space in October 2021, and filmed for a few weeks. The story follows a female surgeon who has to perform an operation on a cosmonaut too ill to return to Earth. There will only be about 30-40 minutes of actual space footage in the film, the rest was shot (on ground) in studios and at real locations. Вызов stars Yulia Peresild, Miloš Biković,...

Exclusive: Last month Russian director Klim Shipenko and actor Yulia Peresild became the first ever film crew to boldly go into outer space to shoot scenes for their upcoming project The Challenge. The duo blasted off to the International Space Station in a Russian Soyuz on October 5 along with Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov where they filmed more than 30 hours of footage across 12 days before returning to Earth on October 17. The project is the first feature film to be shot in space, beating Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s upcoming $200M action adventure with NASA and Space X.
While budget is still being kept under wraps, The Challenge centers around a surgeon (Peresild) who is dispatched to the Iss to save a cosmonaut. It’s a joint project of the Roscosmos State Corporation for State Activities, Channel One Russia and the Yellow, Black and White Film Studio. Russia’s Central Parternship...

When the Soyuz Ms-19 spaceship blasts off from Russia’s Baikonur Cosmodrome on Oct. 5, bound for the International Space Station, Vadim Vereschagin – CEO of production and distribution giant Central Partnership – believes his company’s prospects will likewise lift into the stratosphere.
Onboard the ship will be director Klim Shipenko and actor Yulia Peresild, who are setting out on a 12-day mission to film scenes from the upcoming drama “The Challenge” aboard the station. Produced by public broadcaster Channel One and leading studio Yellow, Black and White, in collaboration with the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the first-of-its-kind feature will be distributed by Central Partnership.
Vereschagin says the cosmic shoot is a “dream” for him personally, as well as a fitting milestone for a company that’s celebrating its quarter-century anniversary this year. “This project, for us, is the pinnacle of all the 25 years that we’ve done so far,” he says.

More than 60 years after the Soviet Union beat the U.S. into orbit with the launch of its Sputnik satellite, a new space race is heating up between the two rivals. And once again, the Russians are claiming bragging rights with plans to produce the first feature film shot in outer space, ahead of Tom Cruise’s upcoming $200-million space epic.
“The Challenge” is the story of a Russian doctor who’s sent to the International Space Station to save the life of a cosmonaut. If all goes according to plan, the production team will lift off next month on a 12-day mission to pull off the historic first.
A collaboration between Russian space agency Roscosmos, public broadcaster Channel One, and leading studio Yellow, Black and White, “The Challenge” will be directed by Klim Shipenko, whose blockbuster comedy “Son of a Rich” is Russia’s highest-grossing film of all time.

If you believe what you read in the papers, the only people going to space are trained astronauts and billionaires. It’s true that the suborbital spaceflights of Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos signal a new era in commercial spaceflight, regardless of how one feels about the optics of wealthy men spending money on seemingly frivolous endeavors.
However, Branson and Bezos’ recent media stunts amount to little more than 50-mile elevator rides, at least compared to the potential for private space endeavors in the very near future, and that includes the entertainment industry. While Elon Musk sets his sights on colonizing Mars, the low-Earth orbit economy is ready to welcome storytellers to microgravity.
Last year, news broke that Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman were cooking up a $200 million project with Universal that would find them flying to the International Space Station with the help of Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Soaring local box office has pushed the Russian film industry to new heights in recent years, even despite a downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but Vadim Vereshchagin, CEO of leading production and distribution company Central Partnership, says introducing fresh Russian talent to the world remains his outfit’s top priority.
“For us, it’s business as usual—boosting that potential,” Vereshchagin tells Variety. “We’re getting more experience on which titles we should be making. Right now, every big-budget title we make, we’re thinking about the international market as well.” The challenge, he says, “is to get the right stories being made which would be appealing to general international audiences.”

This weekend I went to visit the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam, an absolutely fantastic genre movie event as always. One of the films I saw there was Klim Shipenko's Salyut-7, a riveting space thriller, based on the 1985 attempt to save the titular Russian space station after it became uncontrollable. A review will follow soon but rest assured I had a great time with the film. When I told this to friends, they asked me if it was like Apollo 13, or more like Gravity, and it made me wonder what was actually the best film about (semi-)realistic spaceflight I had ever seen. So let's make that the topic for this week: what are your favorite films in (or about) travel in spaaaaaaaaaace? Chime...
