The stunt took weeks of preparation. Building a tank. Training with freedivers and magicians. Developing the filming schedule.
The end result of the effort, a new episode of YouTube star Michelle Khare’s series Challenge Accepted in which she attempted to recreate Harry Houdini’s deadliest trick, has since garnered more than 4.5 million views on YouTube.
The final product has a production quality that would rival what’s on “traditional” TV (in fact, magician David Blaine attempted a similar stunt for a 2006 primetime ABC special), but Khare produced the episode herself, for her YouTube audience.
“For Challenge Accepted because we release very infrequently — unlike a normal season of television, it’s about 10 to 15 episodes a year — and within each of those episodes, we are representing a unique community,” Khare says in an interview. “So for example, in the video where I attempted Harry Houdini’s deadliest magic trick, we’re...

The Mythical Creator Accelerator has announced the third YouTube channel that will benefit from its investment dollars. The $5 million fund established by Rhett and Link‘s Mythical brand is backing The Sorry Girls, an enduring DIY hub founded by Kelsey MacDermaid and Becky Wright more than a decade ago.
In a press release, Mythical describes its creator support as a “multi-stage” investment that will help MacDermaid, Wright, and their colleagues establish new aspects of their shared business. The Creator Accelerator backs videomakers who have devoted followings, expanding operations, and “promise for thoughtful extensions into Dtc real-world products,” per the release.
The Sorry Girls certainly fit that bill. MacDermaid and Wright’s main YouTube hub reaches more than two million YouTube subscribers and has amassed more than 350 million lifetime views since 2010. The DIY duo have built on their shared success by launching charitable initiatives and expanding the size of their team.

For the third edition of their bad-boy live event series, Rhett and Link are taking steps to ensure the biggest possible audience. The two hosts of Good Mythical Morning are teaming up with Kiswe and Alamo Drafthouse to launch another edition of Good Mythical Evening, which will deliver another night of R-rated laughs on August 24.
Good Mythical Evening, which got its start in 2021, is a chance for Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal to shed their carefully cultivated family-friendly images. One night a year, the leaders of the Mythical brand do away with their genteel Southern charm to host a frenzy of booze-fueled debauchery.

At this year’s Streamy Awards, longtime YouTube entertainers Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal accepted the final trophy of the night after their show Good Mythical Morning earned the prestigious Show of the Year title. For the inseparable tandem, it was the fifth Streamys win over a shared career that has spanned more than a decade.
Rhett & Link won their first Streamy in 2015, and very few of the winners from that ceremony are still on top of the online video game. The duo’s longevity has been powered by the success of their company, now known as Mythical. During their latest Streamys acceptance speech, they thanked every one of their employees, and the length of that list demonstrates just how big of a company Mythical has become. “We would not be able to do this show for 11 years now, almost year-round, Monday through Friday, without some very special people,” McLaughlin said.

Good Mythical Evening was a success, selling more than 70,000 tickets, so Rhett & Link are bringing back their edgy event in 2022. The second edition of Good Mythical Evening (or the "sloppy seconds," as the show's homepage puts it) will take place at 10 p.m. Et on September 1, with tickets going on sale on July 13.

Last year, YouTube stars Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal -- known collectively as Rhett & Link -- announced the Mythical Accelerator fund, which will invest in individual digital-native influencers. As it launched the Accelerator, McLaughlin and Neal's Mythical Entertainment revealed comedian Jarvis Johnson as the first recipient of its investment dollars.
Now, Johnson has company. The second creator staked by the Mythical Accelerator is Daniel Thrasher, a musician whose witty videos have brought three million subscribers to his YouTube channel.
The video that put Thrasher on the map is still the third-most watched clip on his YouTube channel, even though it came out 10 years ago. In 2012, to celebrate the arrival of his new piano, then-19-year-old Thrasher "accidentally" composed the theme song to the hit TV show The Office. He uploaded a video about it and it's received more than 21 million views since then.

Building on Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal’s propensity for taste-testing zany foods on their Good Mythical Morning talk show, Mschf is bringing to market Illegal Chips.

Consumers can buy a package of four bags -- each of the aforementioned flavors, plus one surprise bag -- for $12. All are synthetically-flavored and kosher, while the horse and fugu varieties are vegan, and casu marzu is vegetarian.

Nineteen-year-old comedy brand Smosh, co-founded by YouTube OGs Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla (who left the company in 2017), has hired its first chief executive.
In a bid to grow its reach into traditional media, Smosh has tapped Daniel Tibbets, who most recently served as Gm of the famed director Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey streaming platform, Deadline reports. Under Tibbets' tutelage, Smosh will explore TV, live events, audio, publishing, and physical and digital games. Smosh is also moving into a new production studio space in Burbank in coming weeks.
Tibbets will report directly to Mythical co-founders Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, per Deadline. Mythical acquired Smosh in Feb. 2019 for a reported $10 million. Prior to that, the company had been in something of a state of limbo, following the abrupt — and scandal-ridden — shutdown of parent company Defy Media in November 2018.

Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal’s digital media company, Mythical, has formed a creator accelerator and tendered its first investment in comedian Jarvis Johnson and his Sad Boyz digital studio.
The just-formed Mythical Creator Accelerator is a $5 million equity fund dedicated to backing creator-owned and led media companies, the duo said. Investments will be allocated to those who have already achieved significant fandoms, created compelling brands, diversified monetization, and showed promise for direct-to-consumer products, Mythical says.
Capital from the accelerator will be deployed in multiple stages with a platform-agnostic approach, Mythical says, with operational advice from its execs to complement the financial support. Mythical notes that the accelerator won’t operate as a management company or content network, and that all of the investments will draw from its own balance sheets without any outside partners, enabling it to remain nimble and remove the pressure to exit.

The hub comprises non-partisan information on issues and candidates at the national, state, and local levels, as well as mobile-friendly tools -- powered by Vote.org -- that help visitors check their registration status and register if they haven't yet done so. Mythical Entertainment, the digital media firm owned and operated by best friends and business partners Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, reportedly paid roughly $10 million to acquire Smosh from the bank that assumed Defy Media’s assets in the wake of its bankruptcy.
The deal was announced earlier this month, after Smosh arrived on the auction block following Defy's sudden shutdown in November. The acquisition, The Hollywood Reporter notes, will vastly expand the Mythical empire to 70 million subscribers and 250 million monthly views across 14 total YouTube channels. The biggest names within this empire include the flagship Smosh channel (24.1 million subscribers) and McLaughlin and Neal’s daily talk show Good Mythical Morning (15.1 million subscribers).
The Reporter recounts that McLaughlin was in touch with Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox after Defy's demise to discuss potential collaborations. “What I really admire about Mythical is that it’s not owned by a large conglomerate,” Hecox said, “so...

In something of a full-circle moment, storied YouTube comedy brand Smosh has been purchased by another digital-native best friend-slash-creator duo after the channel was temporarily left in limbo following the abrupt -- and scandal-ridden -- shutdown of parent company Defy Media.
Smosh, which was founded by best friends Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox in 2002, has been purchased by Mythical Entertainment, which is owned Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal -- who host the immensely popular YouTube talk show Good Mythical Morning. Given that Padilla departed Smosh last summer to launch a solo career, Hecox and the other members of the crew confirmed the acquisition in a video today (below) -- roughly four months after Defy’s demise.
"They are creators helping creators," Hecox said of McLaughlin and Neal's involvement in the deal. "We get to do whatever we want, and we’re super, super excited." Smosh added that its four existing YouTube channels -- Smosh,...

YouTube hosts Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal have turned to a decidedly old-school marketing format to promote their new media smash Good Mythical Morning.
In order to spread the word about the daily YouTube talk series, which they claim is the internet's most-watched morning show, the best friends and business partners have launched a nationwide billboard campaign. The campaign is a satirical nod to local news station advertising -- with the implication that TV news is almost comedically nostalgic. Billboards are set to run through the month of September with one in all 50 states, situated in unusually-named cities -- except, due to local laws, in Maine, Vermont, Alaska, and Hawaii. In these states, ads will appear on buses, buildings, and airports.
On the billboards, McLaughlin and Neal are dressed like stereotypical news anchors with suits that have actually been painted onto their shirtless torsos. Each billboard proclaims Good Mythical Morning's...

YouTube stars Rhett & Link later this year will revert to their original shorter “Good Mythical Morning” daily talk-show runtime — less than a year after the comedy duo have been trying their hand at a longer-form, TV-style format.
The news came at Studio71’s Digital Content NewFronts presentation in NYC for advertisers. The company also announced it’s bringing back “This Might Get,” the daily talk show from YouTube comedians and BFFs Grace Helbig and Mamrie Hart, for a second season, along with a deal with Fine Brothers Entertainment that includes three new original shows and a branded-content partnership.
Studio71 also touted upcoming content coming from its ongoing partnerships with actor-comedian Lilly Singh, aka YouTube’s “SuperWoman,” and Seven Bucks Digital Studios, the digital arm of Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions.

John Krasinski’s thriller “A Quiet Place” made a lot of noise at the box office this weekend. And perhaps that’s apropos, since a lot of people have been complaining about loud moviegoers at their screenings of the film.
While it’s important to not text message, answer calls, talk or loudly eat popcorn and snacks that might annoy people and ruin the experience of a movie — no matter what you’re seeing — it’s especially true of “A Quiet Place.” The film, directed by and starring Krasinski, who co-leads with his wife Emily Blunt, is a horror movie about a family who live in silence, thanks to monsters that hunt whatever they can hear. And since nearly the whole movie is in silence with very little dialogue, literally every pin drop can send hearts racing.
TheWrap even made an etiquette video, urging theatergoers to be quiet during the movie. But it fell on, at least some, deaf ears. Based Twitter reaction, the film got ruined for a whole lot of people.
Gee, thanks.

Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal's most ambitious scripted project is back. The iconic YouTuber duo, known commonly as Rhett & Link, is at the heart of season two of Buddy System, which is now available on YouTube Red.
After plotting revenge against their "co-ex-girlfriend" in the first season of Buddy System, Rhett & Link are using their second go-around to start anew. Their show's sophomore effort imagines a universe in which they never met and, therefore, never became creative collaborators. In their place, a duo named Brett & Fink has risen to YouTube stardom. In the premiere episode of season two, Rhett & Link move in together and begin to build their friendship, in spite of their many differences. In a song, Rhett explains that he is a sophisticate, while Link paints himself as a common man.
The premiere episode also showcases a few of the well-known actors who will appear in season two of Buddy System.

Reliable YouTube combo Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal, known collectively as Rhett & Link, famously met during the first day of first grade and have been friends ever since. What if, however, that encounter never happened? Would their beloved online video partnership still have come to pass? That's the question at the center of the second season of Rhett & Link's Buddy System, which will premiere on November 29.
The trailer for the new batch of Buddy System episodes presents an alternate history for its starring duo. After meeting as adults, they decide to become roommates. Despite the quirks of their respective personalities, their friendship blossoms.
Beyond the odd couple comedy at its core, the second season of Buddy System is expected to feature several musical numbers, as was the case with season one. It will also include a number of notable guest stars, include Tony Hale, Mayim Bialik, Rob Corddry, and Mary Lynn Rajskub.

On Nov. 6, Rhett & Link will relaunch their hit show Good Mythical Morning (Gmm) with some added funds from YouTube as part of the video giant’s bid to create ad-supported originals alongside the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, The Slow Mo Guys, and more.
Gmm debuted in 2012 and now represents the most popular talk show on all of YouTube, with 12.7 million subscribers and 3.7 billion lifetime views. While the series currently sees hosts Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal engaging in various taste tests, challenges, and games, the revamped show will boast a doubled length of roughly 30 minutes, Variety reports, as well as new segments with celebrity guests and field-produced shorts to make it feel slightly more akin to a late-night talk show. The expanded Gmm will also feature musical performances and sketches.

For more than a decade, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal have made videos together under the name Rhett & Link, cementing their bromance as one of YouTube's most memorable partnerships. In a recent vlog, McLaughlin and Neal -- who have been buddies since the first grade -- took their friendship to another level. They decided to go get vasectomies together and filmed the experience for a video on their Good Mythical Morning channel.
McLaughlin, who has two children, and Neal, who has three, are both are content with their current number of offspring. In order to prevent any unwanted additions to their respective families, they both decided to visit the same doctor on the same day to get matching vasectomies. Along the way, they documented the process, shared a few thoughts about male sexual health, and gave each other the sort of moral support that viewers have come to expect from their adorable friendship.
