It’s day two of our survey of the hugely influential 1994–95 network-television season, which found then-newbies like Friends, ER, and My So-Called Life hobnobbing on the same schedule with Seinfeld, The Simpsons, The X-Files, and other future classics. Yesterday we counted down the season’s 100 best episodes and checked back in on the bonkers fifth season of Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210; today, we’ve presented an oral history of the first season of Party of Five and our rabbit-hole investigation into the memorable and completely forgotten theme songs of that year’s rookie class; and tomorrow is all about Thursday night. But now: Vulture’s Denise Martin flashes back to the freaking insane third season of Melrose Place with the help of the writing squad responsible for its many implausible charms.Everyone remembers Kimberly yanking off her wig and the wedding-dress pool fight from the second season of Melrose Place.

Neil Marshall is quickly becoming 'the battle director' for "Game of Thrones"--and he doesn't mind a bit. "I'd love to be their go-to person for battles," Marshall joked recently in an interview with zap2it. First, the "Centurion" director helmed the ambitious nautical Battle of Blackwater from last season, and now he's brought us the Battle of Castle Black from this Sunday's "The Watchers on the Wall." Like "Blackwater," this episode focused on just a single plot line, and is the most expensive ever produced in the HBO series's history. Marshall filmed the surprisingly short episode (just 51 minutes) last October in Belfast over three weeks with more than 100 extras, two real-life giants and a massive special effects team. The director sat down with Vulture's Denise Martin to talk about the endeavor: highlights below. Kit Harington said “The Watchers on the Wall” was the series’ most expensive yet. How does it compare to “Blackwater,...

There have been few ideas as bizarrely noble as Adam and Naomi Scott’s The Greatest Event in Television History project, and we were excited to hyperanalyze the meticulously crafted series of specials with the married producers at our inaugural Vulture Festival. The premise behind Greatest Event is simple: frame-for-frame reenactments of the opening-credits sequences from semi-obscure 1970s and ’80s programs, such as Simon and Simon and Too Close for Comfort. To make the four installments that have aired on Adult Swim to date, the Scotts recruited some impressive names, including Jon Hamm, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Tom Hanks, and Billy Joel. In their deep-dive interview with Vulture's Denise Martin at the Festival, they reveal that email exchanges with Jon Hamm sparked the idea, recount a memorable visit to Billy Joel’s house on Long Island, and divulge details about the Beverly Hills, 90210 re-creation that never was.

On the first of this week's two Louie episodes, Louie goes on an outing (he won't call it a date) with a wonderfully friendly waitress who, when he demurs after she calls herself fat, delivers a bracing monologue about women, men, and the burden of a non-perfect body. Actress Sarah Baker talked to Vulture's Denise Martin about the scene here, and we've transcribed the moment below for you to read.Vanessa: Ugh, dammit. That is so goddamn disappointing, Louie. Louie, you know what the meanest thing is you can say to a fat girl? "You're not fat." I mean, come on, buddy. It just sucks. It really really sucks. You have no idea. And the worst part is, I'm not even supposed to do this. Tell anyone how bad it sucks, because it's too much for people. I mean, you, you can talk into the microphone and say you can't...

It was the greatest reveal at the Greatest Panel in Television History: Adam Scott and pals nearly re-created the amazing opening credits sequence of Beverly Hills 90210 as the third installment of the Adult Swim series The Greatest Event in Television History. Joined on stage by his wife and producing partner Naomi Scott, the Parks and Recreation star told Vulture’s Denise Martin that the project had gotten far enough along that casting had even begun. Rob Lowe had agreed to play the Jason Priestley character Brandon Walsh, and we would have also gotten to see Elizabeth Banks as Jennie Garth’s Kelly Taylor, Jon Hamm as Luke Perry’s Dylan McKay, Chris Pratt as Ian Ziering’s Steve Sanders, and Brian Austin Green reprising his role as Brian Austin Green’s David Silver. Sadly, coordinating the schedules of so many cast members turned out to be a logistical nightmare, according to Adam Scott.

The Golden Globes are Hollywood's booziest awards show, which means Cate Blanchett wasn't the only celebrity with a few vodkas under her belt by the end of last night's ceremony: The stars were drunk! (Many of them, anyway.) With that in mind, Vulture's Kyle Buchanan and Denise Martin hit up some of the evening's biggest after-parties to spy on A-listers as they mingled, danced, and drank some more. Herewith, a timeline of Vulture's observations (preview: Benedict Cumberbatch danced to "Blurred Lines" but did not dance to "Poker Face"); plus, notes from a handful of the weekend's pre-parties. Let's all wish Hollywood a speedy hangover recovery.Friday, January 10: W Magazine's Best Performances party8:55 p.m. Jared Leto poses for pictures in the driveway of the Chateau Marmont, goes to leave, then turns back to the paparazzi and suggestively intones, "Hey, guys, can I just say one thing?" Mysterious as he is on "Mad Men," James Wolk is just as full of surprises as his character Bob Benson.
Although he's made quite a name for himself over the years -- and this year especially as the guy who hit on Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) on "Mad Men" -- Wolk insists he isn't above the classic odd job.
In an interview with Vulture's Denise Martin, Wolk admitted that one of his best memories is emceeing at bar and bat mitzvahs.
I grew up in a town where there were an immense number of bar and bat mitzvahs. When I was 15, I was approached by one of the bar and bat mitzvah companies to, like, dance and pass out glow sticks and do inane stuff, and I was told that ultimately it would lead to emceeing. So I started when I was 15 and everyone thought I was 18 or 19 because I was really tall.

Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka) is in full-blown rebellious teenager mode on "Mad Men" these days. She's hanging out with boys, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.
Her naughty behavior isn't without merit, though: Sally did recently walk in on her father cheating on his new wife with a woman who happened to be the mother of the boy she had a crush on (we're looking at you, Don and Sylvia).
In an interview with Vulture's Denise Martin, Shipka admitted that she doesn't see the brightest of futures for Sally for the show's final seventh season.
"Next season I sort of see Sally in that downward spiral. There’s not much room for her to go back up," the 13-year-old actress said. "A lot of people thought through seasons past that she’d hit her bottom, but now is truly where she’s going to get herself into trouble. I hope so.

Who better than Vincent Kartheiser himself to explain what was going through Pete Campbell's mind as Bob Benson rubbed knees with him in "Favors," the latest episode of "Mad Men." Did Pete's uncharacteristically calm reaction mean that he might be open to spending some quality time with "Mad Men's" man of mystery?
Kartheiser spoke about the episode in an interview with Vulture's Denise Martin, and offered his always-unique perspective on the scene.
"This is not something that [Pete] foresaw. It’s not an ongoing issue. This is a moment that happened out of the blue, and if it’s ever happened to you, and I don’t know if it has, but if it’s ever happened to you, if someone of the same sex that you didn’t recognize had those feelings toward you, and then all of a sudden that happens, there’s just a moment where it sets in.

Hallelujah! Pastor Casey and Mindy are still going strong as The Mindy Project heads into its final episodes of the season. The minister, played by Workaholics’ Anders Holm, has proven himself the best boyfriend Mindy’s had yet. Sure, he wouldn’t avenge her murder by a hook-handed maniac (God wouldn’t like it), but he’s totally cool with her meeting up with an ex, because he’s trusting like that. The good news is he’s in two more episodes after tonight. “Two more action-packed, must-see episodes — I’m not even fucking around when I say that,” says Holms. “One of them has a big fight scene.” Vulture rang up the actor to get the scoop, and he told us all about cursing in church, disagreeing with boss and co-star Mindy Kaling, and being super comfortable getting naked on TV. By now, you've probably read Denise Martin's Vulture interview with a wonderfully animated Vincent Kartheiser, in which the "Mad Men" star shared his opinions on Twitter and bill-shredding, while also flicking paper footballs at his interrogator. I had a different kind of interview with Kartheiser. In our conversation, the "Angel" veteran talks about Pete Campbell's development from Don Draper's dangerous wunderkind adversary to his current incarnation, a differently discontented man with a receding hairline, a double-chin and a growing realization that he's no longer the youngest man in the room. Kartheiser talked about how his own maturation process hasn't...

We've had high praise for the best new comedies and the best new dramas this week ... but now it's time to talk about the worst new TV shows of the 2012-2013 season.
HuffPost TV rounded up 20 of the top TV critics in the country to share their picks and, not surprisingly, no one pulled any punches with this topic. At all. But it wasn't totally unanimous -- although there is a clear loser here, 10 different shows actually received shout-outs for their awfulness.

What's the best new drama of the 2012-2013 TV season? HuffPost TV rounded up 20 of the top TV critics in the country to share their picks, and it boiled down to six new must-see dramas.
From ABC's "Last Resort" from creator Shawn Ryan and the soapy "Nashville" (leading this category with seven out of 20 votes) to Fox's scary Kevin Bacon-led midseason thriller "The Following," the dramas this year have inspired a lot more critical love than this season's best new comedies.

Los Angeles (Reuters) - Big, brash new singing contest "The X Factor" was thumped on its U.S. TV debut, with American audiences preferring comedy "Modern Family" in their millions, ratings figures showed on Thursday.
After months of hype and bold predictions by its creator Simon Cowell, just 12.1 million Americans tuned in for the debut of "The X Factor" on Fox -- about half the audience for the most recent season of "American Idol".
Instead, "Modern Family" -- the affectionate ABC mockumentary that won big at the Emmy Awards last weekend -- drew 14.3 million viewers to make it the most-watched TV show of Wednesday night, early numbers for Nielsen media research showed.
Critics were also mostly underwhelmed by "X Factor", which Cowell had predicted earlier this year would thrash the competition and replace "Idol" as the most-watched show on U.S. television.

TVGuide.com's Denise Martin has the scoop on 'Grilled Cheesus,' 'Glee''s biting attempt at a faith-filled hour that won't leave you praying for something else to watch. It may just leave you with one big question though: Wwydwagcj? (Translation: What Would You Do With A Grilled Cheese Jesus?)

Atlanta
Bam! The Real Housewives of Atlanta are here!
Tonight is the big premiere of Rhoa’s third season and TV Guide was able to talk to NeNe Leakes about what to expect this season. But despite the getting the goods about what’s to transpire this season, there was one part of the interview that stuck out to me. When TV Guide’s Denise Martin asked Leakes if she still kept in touch with departed cast member Lisa Wu Hartwell, her response was quite surprising.
“No, I don’t talk to Lisa at all,” NeNe told Ms. Martin. “Look, I’m a very good judge of character… I get you right away. And so, as Lisa and I hung out more, I got her. That’s all I can really say. I got her. I got who she was.”
Whaaaa?!?!?!? What the hell happened?!?!?!
NeNe went on to say...

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. It's official: the clock has run out on Fox's serialized drama series 24. On Friday, Fox announced that Day Eight of 24 would be the series' last, with a two-hour series finale planned for Monday, May 24th. "This has been the role of a lifetime, and I will never be able to fully express my appreciation to everyone who made it possible," said Kiefer Sutherland in a statement. "While the end of the series is bittersweet, we always wanted 24 to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon. This feels like the culmination of all our efforts from the writers to the actors to our fantastic crew and everyone at Fox. Looking ahead to the future, Howard Gordon and I are excited about the opportunity to create the feature film version of...

Aziz Ansari just watched "Twilight" and "Twilight: New Moon" for the first time in order to bone up on the film franchise that will probably sweep the MTV Movie Awards again, just like it did last year. But this year Ansari will be involved, according to the L.A. Times blog Show Tracker. "Insiders tell Show Tracker exclusively that the comedian and 'Parks and Recreation' star is in final negotiations to host the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, slated to air live June 6 from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City," reports Denise Martin. "Last week, Ansari spent a couple of days live-tweeting his first-ever viewings of 'Twilight' and its sequel 'New Moon.'" Show Tracker recalls last...

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. It was only a matter of time before someone snapped up River Tam. Former Firefly and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star Summer Glau, who most recently appeared in a multiple-episode story arc on Dollhouse this season, has landed one of the leads in NBC's vigilante drama pilot The Cape. Project, from writer Tom Wheeler and directed by Simon West, revolves around a a disgraced former cop (David Lyons), framed for a crime he didn't commit, who becomes a costumed vigilante in order to clear his name. Glau will star opposite Lyons, James Frain, and Dorian Missick, and will play Orwell, described as "a cute and intrepid investigative blogger who fearlessly goes after corrupt cops and costumed bad guys" and who "gets physical and is quite capable of kicking ass." If that isn't a part made for Glau, I don't know what is.

Welcome to your Friday morning television briefing. Los Angeles Times' Denise Martin is reporting that Party Down star Adam Scott is heading to NBC's Parks and Recreation, where he is slated to turn up in the final episodes of the season... alongside Rob Lowe, in fact. [Editor: could their sudden appearances in Pawnee be linked?] Scott, who will serve as as a series regular for Parks' third season, has also signed a first-look deal with NBC and Universal Media Studios, under which he will develop new series projects. Parks and Recreation co-creator Mike Schur described Scott as "brilliant and funny -- and he's funny in a lot of different ways. There just aren't that many people with a comedic range that spans Step Brothers to Party Down." As for Party Down fans worried that this would mean the end of Henry Pollard, Martin reports that "Scott said he'd be open to coming back to reprise his role should "Party Down" be renewed.

After a day of interviews and covering press sessions at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, I had the honor of dining at Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio's restaurant, The Dining Room at The Langham, in Pasadena. I've been dying to eat there since Top Chef ended... and what an evening it was. I was joined in this culinary adventure by several fellow television journalists/foodies including: my editor at The Daily Beast, Kate Aurthur; Denise Martin of The Los Angeles Times; Zap2It's Hanh Nguyen; and St. Louis Post Dispatch TV columnist Gail Pennington. Arriving at the Dining Room, we were greeted with several warm welcomes by the restaurant's manager and the hotel's PR executive. We sipped on some lovely glasses of non-vintage champagne while we perused the menu and ultimately decided to go with a five-course chef's tasting menu, with the dishes to be expertly selected by Michael Voltaggio,...

Lots of new shows!
Come on, Entertainment Weekly, are you really gonna stand behind “Survivor” as your pick for best reality show of all time? Clearly the June 12 issue went to print before anyone was able to get their hands on a screener of “Kendra,” which debuted this past Sunday on E!
But seriously, ya’ll, while EW’s Top 20 included some obvious choices -- “The Real World,” “American Idol,” “Project Runway” and “The Apprentice” -- it was
