Mark Morton, the guitarist who co-founded the heavy-metal group Lamb of God three decades ago, will release a memoir this summer that looks back on the triumphs and tragedies of his life so far.
In the book Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir, which will come out June 25, the musician reflects on how he felt like he had to push forward with the band even after the death of his newborn daughter in 2009. That event and the perpetual motion of band life led him to addiction. His story, which he co-wrote with author Ben Opipari,...

The revamped Pantera have made it their mission to honor late brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) on their ongoing tour. On Saturday night (February 24th) in Baltimore, a young fan’s resemblance to Dime caught the attention of singer Philip Anselmo.
Seeing the fan with a curly mop of hair on his head brought back memories for Anselmo, who recalled his first meetings with Dimebag. “Some people might believe in reincarnation and stuff like that,” the Pantera frontman said from the stage. “There could be a younger Dimebag right up front … Dude, just shake your head like that and everybody in the whole place will see it. Hey, turn up the lights here. Show ’em. Look at that guy.”

“When I was first met Dime, his lid was exactly that length,” continued Anselmo, who invited up the fan to join the band onstage.

Pantera’s Rex Brown has teamed with Epiphone for a new Thunderbird signature model bass guitar — the first Epiphone model in Brown’s partnership with Gibson Brands.
The Thunderbird is considered arguably the definitive rock bass of the ’70s and its classic silhouette features a clean Ebony finish on Rex’s model. The axe touts a 9-ply neck-through-body mahogany and walnut neck with a C-shape profile, mahogany body wings, and a standard 34-inch scale length.
“Sometimes, it’s not about the price, but the quality, and Epiphone has some of the coolest bass designs ever made, Imo,” commented Brown in a press release. “I’ve had Thunderbird’s as long as I can remember! There is nothing cooler looking than a TBird… All my favorite bass players growing up have played them!! From Tom Hamilton to Pete Way…”

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe turned the band’s inaugural Headbangers Boat cruise into a Vegas wedding chapel on Halloween night (October 31st). The singer officiated a wedding between two cruisers, giving them a metal memory that will last forever.
Headbangers Boat set sail from Miami earlier that day, and Blythe didn’t waste any time making the couple’s dreams come true.
As the story goes, the groom, Ro Kohli (who runs a company called War Machine Merchandise), couldn’t get into a Lamb of God show on Halloween night in 2012. Not wanting to spend the evening alone, he went on Ok Cupid and found a match in the bride, Bic, and asked her out on a date. In a full circle moment, Blythe (dressed as Elvis Presley) married the couple exactly 11 years to the day of their first date.

Lamb of God have offered up “Evidence” — a song previously unavailable in North America — on digital streaming platforms.
The band shared the track to celebrate the the first anniversary of its latest album, Omens. Previously, “Evidence” was only available as a bonus track on the Japanese CD release of the album, but it can now be streamed far and wide.
There’s nothing extraneous about “Evidence.” Belying its prior bonus-track status, the song sees Lamb of God laying down slam riffs and chunked-out breakdowns — perfect pockets for Randy Blythe to inject his growls and rhythmic gutturals. The arrangement takes some surprising turns, with its prog-like Mastodon-ish flow leading to a satiating blastbeat section at one point.
Lamb of God are also commemorating the Omens anniversary on Saturday with the widespread release of their documentary Making Of: Omens, which details the creation of the album. It will be streamable via the band’s YouTube channel.

Lamb of God kicked off their summer tour itinerary in style, with Randy Blythe sporting a new look. The metal frontman cut off his longtime dreadlocks, showing off a new buzz cut at the band’s Wednesday night (July 12th) gig at the Festival D’été De Québec festival in Quebec City, Canada.
The veteran metal act’s first show of the summer featured a 15-song setlist offering a mix of songs from eight albums, including two each from their two most recent LPs: 2022’s Omens and 2020’s self-titled effort. The concert closed with two Ashes of the Wake classics: “Laid to Rest” and “Redneck.”
As Blabbermouth points out, Blythe once told Ketagalan Media that his dreadlocks formed when he “just stopped combing” his hair around 2014. He was once asked by Metal Hammer how much money he’d have to be paid to shave his dreads off, to which he responded,...

Thrash legends Anthrax have hit the studio to work on their new album, the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s For All Kings.
The band revealed the news in a press release, sharing a photo of core instrumental members Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, and Frank Bello alongside producer Jay Ruston. Ian and company are currently laying down tracks before vocalist Joey Belladonna and lead guitarist Jonathan Donais add their respective parts.
Heavy Consequence caught up with Benante earlier this year for a joint interview with Exodus’ Gary Holt, and he briefly discussed the band’s recording plans and working around his own busy schedule as the current drummer for Pantera.

Industrial techno auteurs Health have returned with the one-off single “Hateful,” which is dropping alongside the latest software update for the first-person shooter game Ultrakill.
Co-written with Sierra, the track is an immediate head-nodder with pulsing electronic percussion and swathes of noise and shoegazing textures. Overall, Health take a more dance-pop approach as opposed to their harsher industrial tendencies, with Street Sects’ Leo Ashlin providing the appropriate melodic backing vocals.
“Back to the cyber grind,” the band said of the song, which is getting the spotlight in the latest Ultrakill update. Health themselves have even been rendered in the game’s old-school graphic style (as seen above), and more collaborations between Health and Ultrakill “will be announced soon.”
The game is described as a “ultra-violent” old-school Fps and has received widespread praise for evoking classic shooters such as Doom, Quake, and Unreal Tournament.

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe reunited with a security guard named Rachel who appeared in a viral video in which she initially denied the singer entry onto the stage at the 2022 Bloodstock festival. With Lamb of God back on tour in England, Blythe gave her a great big hug and the band shared the moment on Twitter.

There's a throwaway moment in "Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers" that I can't stop thinking about: Chip (voiced by John Mulaney), 32 years removed from his TV heyday, returns home after a long day's work. He removes his headphones. For the briefest moment, "Laid To Rest" by Lamb Of God comes blaring out of them. That is a deep cut by modern metal standards, a selection that suggests Chip's penchant for loud and fast music doesn't end with LoG. It also hints at the maelstrom of resentment and rage Chip has for Dale (Andy Samberg), his former best friend who spurned him three...

Weezer’s latest music video sees them auditioning to be the opening act for none other than Wyld Stallyns, the band fronted by Bill S. Preston and Ted Theodore Logan in “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”

Although 45 minutes of Middle-Aged White Male Aggression may feel out of pace with the current national moment, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe has always written more open-minded and inclusive lyrics than many of his peers — you just have to strain your ears to make sense of his screeds.
When he bellows hoarsely about “The American Scream” on “Checkmate,” one of 10 chugging ragers on the band’s self-titled eighth album, it’s not just generalized hate-the-world enmity but a fierce Trump takedown, with Blythe sarcastically using the phrase “Make America Hate Again.

Lamb of God have shared a thundering new song, “Routes,” which was lyrically inspired by the time frontman Randy Blythe spent protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. The song will appear on Lamb of God’s upcoming self-titled album, out June 19th.
“Routes” is a bulldozer of a track — packed with a relentless barrage of drums and riffs — featuring guest vocals from Testament singer Chuck Billy. Blythe’s lyrics paint a vivid portrait of environmental destruction tied to centuries of injustice toward indigenous people.

David Koresh and many members of his religious group, the Branch Davidians, which are at the center of Paramount Network's Waco, now streaming on Netflix, famously met a tragic end in a standoff with the FBI in 1993. Though the group's compound - called Mount Carmel - was initially raided for firearms, the religious beliefs of the Branch Davidians became a hot-button story in the years following the event.
The Branch Davidians as a group started long before Koresh got involved. They started as just the Davidians back in the 1930s, according to Vox. They were a spinoff of the Seventh-Day Adventists, a religious group with beliefs based in Christianity. The Davidians were created by Bulgarian immigrant Victor Houteff, "who dissented from aspects of standard Seventh-Day Adventist theology," according to Vox. "Houteff believed that the Messiah prophesied in the biblical book of Isaiah was not Jesus, but was yet to come.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Aquarius (Kleber Mendonça Filho)
The staggeringly accomplished debut feature by Brazilian critic-turned-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, Neighboring Sounds, announced the arrival of a remarkable new talent in international cinema. Clearly recognizable as the work of the same director, Mendonça’s equally assertive follow-up, Aquarius, establishes his authorial voice as well as his place as one of the most eloquent filmic commentators on the contemporary state of Brazilian society. – Giovanni M.

The sordid history of black metal has long fascinated headbangers and outsiders alike. More than just a lo-fi genre of extreme music, it was thought of by its ardent practitioners as a movement — and, like most movements founded upon ill-advised and/or xenophobic ideals, it eventually turned violent. Vice Films, Insurgent Media and 20th Century Fox are bringing black metal’s most infamous story to the screen with “Lords of Chaos,” an adaptation of the book by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind.

Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Jack Kilmer, Valter Skarsgård and Sky Ferreira are set to star in the film, which is being co-written and directed by Jonas Åkerlund. “Lords of Chaos” will center around Mayhem, a Norwegian black metal band involved in a spate of highly publicized church burnings whose infighting eventually led to a murder.

When Anne Fontaine’s “The Innocents” made its debut at Sundance earlier this year, it was under the title “Agnus Dei,” referring to a liturgical chant that has been a part of Roman Catholic mass since the seventh century. The sentiment of the traditional chant is simple: “Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Lamb of God, you who take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.” For the haunted characters that inhabit Fontaine’s sensitive slice of forgotten history, that search for mercy and peace finds itself in some very unexpected places. And not all of them are touched by God.
Fontaine’s film tackles a fictionalized take on the story of Madeleine Pauliac (the film renames her Mathilde Beaulieu), a doctor and Resistance fighter who was a member of the French Red Cross during and after World War II.

To borrow a phrase from Zoolander, Garth Ennis is so hot right now. Much like Mark Millar a couple of years ago, creative types and studio bods seem to be champing at the bit to develop the Northern Irish writer’s work: the recent Netflix take on Marvel’s Punisher character was clearly drawn from his seminal Max run and proved so popular that a solo series now seems to be in the works. Ennis’ sex’n’violence subversive superhero deconstruction, The Boys is also on the way to TV but most notably, Preacher, the iconic title that made Ennis’ name and helped to shape the landscape of 90s comic books premieres this very Sunday on AMC. As festival season is well underway, we are now at the halfway point of the year and it has proved a fruitful one for rock music. Despite the claims that ‘rock is dead’, the genre has been revitalized somewhat in the mainstream with bands like Royal Blood and Muse bringing their harder flavor of rock to the general public.
This has been further solidified by the recent study on Spotify that suggests that heavy metal is more popular than pop music. Though slightly misleading, it’s clear that both genres still maintain a passionate and loyal fan-base.
2015 has also saw a resurgence of older artists making a return to the center stage with bands like Slayer taking to the metal pulpit once again and the much anticipated album release by Faith No More after eighteen years out of action. It has also been a great year for...

Try to imagine, if you will, that you’re at a party. There’s a palatable blend of genre’s on tap; the old and the new, the mainstream and the alternative, the daring and the dreary. You wonder if this could be your night, the night that you finally pluck up the courage, the determination and the willpower to just this once – to plug your mp3 player in.
As most metal-heads are aware, scream-heavy vocals and tremolo guitars are rarely welcome among the uninitiated. Putting the likes of Slayer or Lamb Of God on is all too often met with sneers, dropped expressions and a chorus of complaints, ranging from the refreshing “I can’t even hear what they’re saying” to the always-enlightened “It all sounds the same”.
Religious aunt getting overly preachy? Neighbours arguing too loudly? Or are you just feeling a little bit sadistic? It’s largely a pointless endeavour,...

We Are What We Are | The Book Thief | Non-Stop | Ride Along | As The Palaces Burn | Unforgiven | Funny Face
We Are What We Are (18)
(Jim Mickle, 2013, Us) Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner. 103 mins
The story of an archaic backwoods family with very good reasons for their insularity, this spends such a long time laying out its twisted domestic set-up, it's almost as if it's in denial about being a horror movie (remade from a Mexican original). It's a wise decision. If you don't know the family's Big Secret already, it would be a shame to spoil it; let's just say it pulls the story into real shock and gore territory.
The Book Thief (12A)
(Brian Percival, 2013, Us/Ger) Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson. 131 mins
A smart but syrupy wartime tale that traverses well-trodden territory – from The Reader to Life Is Beautiful – as a young girl is adopted by goodly Germans,...

Stranger By The Lake (18)
(Alain Guiraudie, 2013, Fra) Pierre Deladonchamps, Christophe Paou, Patrick D'Assumçao, Jérôme Chapatte. 100 mins
Sex and death take a synchronised swim in this bold thriller, shot at a single lakeside location. It's a popular cruising spot, and the rituals of its regular (and regularly naked) male visitors are observed with a combination of frankness, lyricism and mischievous satire. But a more mysterious tone takes hold when newcomer Franck sees his Selleck-moustachio'd crush commit a terrible crime. The riptide of desire drags him into a dangerous game.
Only Lovers Left Alive (15)
(Jim Jarmusch, 2013, UK/Ger/Fra/Cyp/Us) Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska. 123 mins
Making Twilight look like Sesame Street, Jarmusch gives us the coolest vampires imaginable – too cool to even do much vampire stuff.

Heavy Metal is a broad term and a very broad church: there are umpteen variations on its basic theme and there are sub genres galore. However, the single thread which binds these disparate pieces is a loud, overdriven, distorted guitar wielded with intent. Non fans traditionally are quick to dismiss the music as entirely without merit and at this point I’ll say hello to Jason Isaacs who recently described the peerless Lamb Of God as, “People having some kind of epileptic fit in charge of a guitar.” Of course, the perpetual allure of Heavy Metal is that outsiders, such as Mr Isaacs, just don’t get it and for this reason it remains a consistently popular form of music, constantly shifting its shape to adapt to the times whilst managing to maintain its core appeal of rebellion.
Despite its foremost protagonists being American, heavy metal is essentially a British creation.

Randy Blythe, the Lamb Of God frontman charged with manslaughter last year in the Czech Republic, has been acquitted. Prosecutors have eight days to appeal the decision, which they say they still plan to do. Blythe was accused of causing the 2010 death of 19-year-old fan Daniel Nosek, who prosecutors say jumped on stage at a Lamb Of God Show, whereupon Blythe pushed him off. Nosek later died of head injuries sustained in the fall. Blythe already served quite a bit of time in Czech jail last summer, after prosecutors challenged his bail requirements. After spending 38 days behind bars ...

And the winners of the 2013 Grammy Awards are ... the men. Male artists dominate the nominees in the top categories for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, announced Wednesday night (Dec. 5).
Topping the list with six nominations each are Jay-z, Kanye West, Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Taylor Swift, whose new album "Red" won't be eligible for consideration until 2014, earned a single nod for Record of the Year with her hit breakup single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
The biggest snubs are teen heartthrobs Justin Bieber and One Direction, who cleaned up at the American Music Awards, and Rihanna. The "Diamonds" singer earned a trio of nods (pop solo performance for her "Where Have You Been," rap-sung collaboration nomination with Jay-z for "Talk That Talk" and short-form music video for "We Found Love") but is Mia from the major categories.

Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe has been released from Czech jail after spending 38 days behind bars. The singer was being held on suspicion of manslaughter after he pushed a fan off a stage in Prague two years ago, allegedly resulting in the man’s death. Blythe had been held for over a month as prosecutors challenged his bail requirements. In the end, he paid $400,000, and eventually he will have to return to the Czech Republic to stand trial. Randy Blythe, lead singer for the metal group Lamb Of God, has been arrested in Prague on suspicion of manslaughter. The arrest stems from an incident at one of the band’s shows in 2010 where a fan rushed the stage and was pushed back into the audience by Blythe. The fan landed on his head, was hospitalized, and eventually died. If convicted, the singer faces five to 10 years in prison. The Lamb Of God camp has proclaimed Blythe’s innocence, saying that he’s been wrongly accused and that they "expect him to be fully exonerated." Last night ...

After two days of torrential rain and biting wind, to just about everyone’s surprise the last day of Download dawned with clear skies and a blazing sun. By evening, the only patch of mud to not have been baked away by England’s reliably idiosyncratic weather remained in front of the Zippo Encore stage – more commonly known as the “Second Stage” – and it was there I found myself ankle deep in the mire and surrounded by happy, sweaty, shoving folks who were all out to see the stage’s headliners, Rise Against.
Despite this year’s fantastic lineup the abysmal weather had put rather a dampener on the whole weekend, but Sunday’s sunshine brought a party atmosphere to the festival that the bands over on the main stage had been making the most of, with Anthrax and Lamb Of God pulling off lively sets that kept the circle pits going all afternoon.

Cartoon metal band Dethklok to tour North America with real, less interesting metal band Lamb Of God
Given how cartoony heavy metal can seem—what with all of the corpse paint, goat’s blood, and other bombastic excesses—it’s somehow sensible that the virtual melodic death metal band Deathklok, from Adult Swim’s animated Metalocalypse series, has risen to the top of the genre. This summer, Deathklok is setting out on a co-headlining tour with real-life, non-cartoon metalcore act Lamb Of God. The tour stops in Toronto on Aug. 11 for this year’s Heavy T.O. festival, where Dethklok will join other non-cartoon bands (and Marilyn Manson). Because cartoons are not real and cannot interact ...

Lamb Of God is one of the most respected, influential and successful bands in modern metal. They’ve built up a following over the course of their career due to their abrasive, uncompromising yet technical sound and their renowned live shows which have become revered and admired both because of the band’s ability to create a great atmosphere and also because they (arguably) sound even better live than on studio recordings. Their gigs are also some of the most hectic and in-your-face you’ll go to – I should know as I lost both my trainers in the pit in one of their London headlining gigs and had to endure the rest of their set with people parading over my feet. But it was worth it. Even though I’d been a Lamb Of God fan for years, that was my first time seeing them live...

As punctual and reliable as a well-made time bomb, Lamb Of God has earned its status as one of the standard-bearers of modern metal. Yet the veteran band’s 2009 album, Wrath, felt a little off—due to some relatively unfocused songwriting and a swampier sound enabled by the addition of new producer Josh Wilbur. Wilbur is back at the boards for Wrath’s follow-up, Resolution, but something over the past couple of years must have clicked. Where Wrath is botched and bleary in spots, Resolution is sharp, focused, restless, and pitilessly ferocious. Much of that has to do with ...

Few bands can legitimately say they’ve influenced both Battles and Lamb Of God. Breadwinner is one of them. In the early ’90s, the Virginia group hashed out an off-kilter, technically dizzying deconstruction of instrumental metal that solidified the burgeoning subgenre of math-rock. Breadwinner guitarist Pen Rollings formed his latest outfit, Loincloth, in 2003, but while he left before the band released its debut full-length, Iron Balls Of Steel, the album picks up not far from where Breadwinner left off in 1992—lack of vocals, love of calculus, and all. The main difference is, Iron Balls has a lot more ...

2011 was a great year for album releases, from artists new and old, and with 2012 set to be our last year on Earth (ahem, those Mayans, what are they like?), you’d hope that at the very least the sound track to the end of the world would be a good one to go out on. Thankfully, judging by the list myself and fellow WhatCulture! writer Rhys Milsom have compiled, the soundtrack to our unified demise should be the least of our worries.
So here is the first in two articles on some of the albums to keep a ear out for in 2012, and if some of these albums live up to their promise, they may well appear in our end of year list, if there’s an end of year to be had of course…
