The 70th annual Golden Reel Awards were handed out on Sunday night, honoring the best achievements in sound editing across film, television, video games and student work.
The top three film awards were handed to “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Banshees Of Inisherin” and “Elvis” which won for feature effects/foley, feature dialogue/Adr and feature music respectively. All three films are also nominated for the top prize, best picture at the 95th Academy Awards which will be handed out on March 12.
Other winners included “Moonage Daydream,” “Good Night Oppy” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”
The ceremony was opened by an address from Motion Pictures Sound Editors president Mark Lanza. “Sound editors play a crucial role in bringing films, television shows, and games to life,” he said. “This year, we have seen truly incredible sound editing. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

American Idol is hyped as a showcase for great vocalists who could be hitmakers. That's dishonest. American Idol, most of the time, is a showcase for hot people who want your attention. And I confess: Some of them deserve it! Today I'm counting down the ten hottest dudes ever to take the Idol stage, and I'm offering pictorial proof too! Warm up your vocal cords and prepare to sing out in ecstasy, y'all.

Ok, let's make a pact: If we forget the unnerving, deeply troubling scandal that erupted around season four Top 24 competitor Mario Vazquez (which forced him to drop out of the competition), we can simply admire his boyish, sweet looks like a nicely blended oil painting. His cover of "I Love Music" is deeply underrated, by the way. Listen to that. Not the creepy other stuff.

Top 13 Guys: American Idol Recap
Let's start this season of American Idol right: with a multiple choice test. Don't worry, much like the Idol judges, I won't fail you, and the right answer will mean as much to you as the outcome of last night's show.
Which of the following was most annoying last night?
A: The fact that even with a new set and increased promises that this was the best season ever, nothing seemed to have changed from last year.
B. That the little constructive criticism given last night seemed to be aimed at producer favorites, feeling a little like Idol trying to use reverse psychology
C. That it was never certain exactly who had control over song choice
D. That we were supposed to laugh at the judge's antics, when in fact they were boorish and borderline offensive
E. That Heejun has been given the 'funny' edit,...

It’s fitting that American Idol chose Walter the Angry Taxi Driver as the mascot for its St. Louis audition episode — the seventh and final tryout telecast before Hollywood Week kicks off next Wednesday. Indeed, it was hard to stop myself from griping and kvetching over the course of an hour that managed to show us only five of the city’s 46 Golden Ticket recpients — and yet still found time to give us a flashback to Statue of Liberty Guy, my pick for the all-time lamest, most egregious offender in the show’s “Anything to Be on TV Hall of Shame.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

Lil Wayne closed out Sunday's 2011 MTV VMAs by singing, rapping and rocking, but his night was actually just getting started. Tha Carter IV became available at midnight, and Weezy celebrated the album's long-awaited release at the Boulevard3 nightclub in Hollywood.

Almost at the same time, Bow Wow and Tyga debuted a music video each. The former dropped a celebratory video for his song "Everywhere I Go", while the latter released an emotional clip for his own single "Far Away".
Bow Wow shot his video in a documentary style to give fans a closer look at his life. It features cameos from the likes of high-profile Hip-Hop artists DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg and Shawty Lo.
Tyga, meanwhile, made a more-conceptualized video which sees him sharing screen with former "American Idol" contestant Chris Richardson. In it, he's coping with the death of his on-screen girlfriend who was killed in a tragic car accident.
"Everywhere I Go" is lifted from Bow Wow's street album "Greenlight 4", while "Far Away" is listed in Tyga's upcoming sophomore set "Careless World".

"American Idol" Season 10 has sparked a lot of romance rumors, probably more than any other season.
You had rumors of Stefano Langone having a crush on Pia Toscano and Haley Reinhart, who was rumored to be dating Casey Abrams. You also can't forget Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, the teen golden couple.
We decided to look back at all ten seasons and single out the best couples -- romantic and bromantic -- and leave it up to you to decide which pairing is "Idol's" best. Go through our list, think long and hard and then vote in our poll -- "American Idol" "couple" edition:
Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina -- Season 10
The youngest final two ever sparked romance rumors after Lauren planted a few kisses on Scotty after he was crowned Season 10's winner. After the show, Lauren played coy, but Scotty said the two are just "really good friends.

Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because tonight the tenth insane season of "American Idol" is coming to a close.
It’s a cycle that brought us singing cleaning ladies, a scatting jazz freak, a galloping Nashville indie heartthrob, a growling sex kitten piñata, a pyromaniac rocker, a gospel lovin' spa concierge straight out of Compton, and, ultimately, two country fetus finalists who were born after Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" hit stores. With Simon Cowell on to bigger (and better?) projects, all eyes were on two new judges, more concerned with promoting their new singles than giving honest critiques.
Welcome to "American Idol X: Everybody’s Ridiculous (And Beautiful And Perfect!)"
The two hour seven minute finale spectacular kicks off at 8pm Edt, and I’ll be live-blogging every hot mess moment of it! The random cameos! The jaw-dropping group numbers! Randy Jackson’s sure-to-be-absurd outfit!

It wouldn’t be unprecedented: Don’t forget that back in Season 6 producers called an audible and decided not to give anyone the boot during Idol Gives Back. (The following week, both Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson were eliminated.)

So let’s just call this thing: Crystal killed it, and Lee kinda choked. Having discussed last night’s American Idol finale performance night with EW.com’s preeminent Idoloonie Michael Slezak, I know that was also his assessment of the evening from the vantage point of his living room couch. From my seat inside the IdolDeathStar — a.k.a. the Nokia Theater La Live — the difference between Crystal’s often effortless excellence and Lee’s unfocused striving was even more stark. I don’t think I’ve experienced an Idol finale, on TV or in person, this lopsidedly obvious...

Though he will not reach the legal drinking age until 2014, let's pour one out for Aaron Kelly, the gawky balladeer who got the ol' heave-ho on "American Idol" Wednesday night (May 5). I've spent far too much of the past few months trying to wrap my head around just how the teen — whose voice I once compared to the sound of "nails on the chalkboard of a high school math class he should be sitting in instead of crooning on 'Idol'" — managed to stick around the competition this long. For now, I salute the kid for a job well done (if hardly well sung).
So what will become of young Kelly? Will he go on to a successful career as a recording artist? Or might we never hear his warbling voice again? A look back at former "Idol" contestants who got voted off in the fifth...

I’d like to open Tuesday night's (March 2) "American Idol" recap with a short excerpt of a screenplay I'm working on, which is loosely based on what I think might have happened backstage Tuesday. It's called "Bower Power."
Int. CBS Studios, backstage.
The Top 10 men are hanging out. A producer enters with purpose.
Producer: Crystal Bowersox is really sick. Doctors say she can't perform on "Idol" tonight. So you boys are going to sing in her place since we're willing to sacrifice all of you in order to save one of the season's breakout stars. Get into wardrobe, you pitiful excuses for "Idol" contestants. You're live in three hours.
Alex Lambert: [vomits, weeps, craps pants simultaneously.]
Tim Urban: It's okay, Alex. Just pray. That's what I do.
Jermaine Sellers: [puts down his vocal humidifier] Yeah! Jesus is my homeboy!
Cut to Heaven.
Jesus: [shakes head, sighs] I miss season eight.
Jesus presses play on his iPod, listens to Danny Gokey...

Season-nine semifinalists' rocky live debut has 'Idol' experts and fans concerned.

The early semifinal rounds of "American Idol" are always difficult. You are bound to have some early hopefuls falling victim to first-time-on-tv jitters, a few dark horses soaring before an eventual crash and a handful of singers proving they were lucky to have gotten there in the first place.
But after the first two nights of mostly panned performances, veteran "Idol" watchers woke up Thursday (February 25) wondering, "Is this the worst top 24 ever?"
The answer is easy for Dave Della Terza, webmaster of the long-running "Idol"-bashing blog VoteForTheWorst.com, which encourages "Idol" watchers to purposely stuff the box with votes for the weakest contestants. An Interview With Jason Mraz In the few short years following the release of Jason Mraz's 2002 debut album Waiting For My Rocket To Come, the young San Diego singer-songwriter has had the longest running hit on Billboard's Pop Singles chart ("I'm Yours," 70 weeks), has become a Grammy award-winner, has earned a Songwriters Hall Of Fame trophy, has opened for The Rolling Stones, and, most importantly, has been immortalized by American Idol contestant Chris Richardson for his read of Mr. A-Z's "Geek In The Pink." Though these great achievements say much about the artist, he had a bit more to add about all things Mrazworld... American Idol producers have leaped to the defense of competition judge Simon Cowell over reports he rolled his eyes during a contestant's tribute to the students of Virginia Tech University on Tuesday's show. Internet sites went crazy after the incident with critics accusing judge Cowell of being insensitive to singer Chris Richardson's message to friends caught up in the aftermath of Monday's campus massacre. The British music mogul was caught making a sarcastic gesture as Richardson said, "My hearts and prayers go out to Virginia Tech. I have a lot of friends over there... Be strong." but Cowell insisted his actions were directed at fellow judge Paula Abdul, whom he was having a conversation with. The 47-year-old - who offered his "best wishes" to the Virginia Tech students on Tuesday night's show - has now issued another denial to distance himself from the controversy, saying, "I may not be the nicest person in the world, but I would never disrespect those families or victims." And executive producers of the hit talent contest, Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, were quick to offer their support to Cowell. Warwick says, "He would be the biggest fool on television if he did that. And he's not a fool, believe me." Lythgoe adds, "This is a sad time for everyone, so it is especially disheartening that a quick camera cutaway could have been misinterpreted."...

Music mogul Simon Cowell has acted quickly to defend himself against reports he rolled his eyes during an American Idol contestant's tribute to the students of Virginia Tech University on the TV talent show on Tuesday night. Internet sites went crazy after the incident with critics accusing judge Cowell of being insensitive to singer Chris Richardson's message to friends caught up in the aftermath of Monday's campus massacre. TV cameras captured Cowell making a sarcastic gesture as Richardson said, "My hearts and prayers go out to Virginia Tech. I have a lot of friends over there... Be strong." But he insists he wasn't listening to what Richardson was saying and was caught up in conversation with fellow judge Paula Abdul. Speaking on show host Ryan Seacrest's Los Angeles morning radio show yesterday morning, Cowell, who made his own tribute to the students of Virginia Tech during American Idol, admitted he was horrified to become a target of nasty stories. He said, "You get this crazy story that appears that I rolled my eyes disrespectfully at Chris because he made the comment... The truth was I had switched off at that point and I was talking to Paula. I did wanna clear this one up because this is a very sensitive subject. The irony was is that we did want to set the right tone on the show."...
