Not even a natural disaster could dampen this couple's wedding day. Shelley and Chris Holland were given only 24 hours to re-plan their ceremony after Hurricane Harvey swept through Texas, leaving unprecedented destruction its path. The bride shared her story on Facebook in an emotional message penned to Ellen DeGeneres, as well as a powerful photo she and Chris took amidst the flooding. "My husband and I completely lost every plan we made over the last 6 months surrounding our upcoming wedding on September 2nd due to Hurricane Harvey," Shelley wrote. "This included our wedding cake, the venue, the chapel the catering and so many other small details." But instead of...

1. Crowdfunding for Film Festivals: Chris Holland, Operations and Marketing Director for the Atlanta Film Festival, has helped to launch the festival's first ever crowdfunding campaign. He writes about why the festival decided to use crowdfunding to raise money for the annual event and shares his tips for crowdfunding your event here. 2. Life Itself: It's not unusual these days for a film funded through crowdfunding to play at a festival, but it is unusual for a film to be accepted into Sundance while it is still in the middle of a crowdfunding campaign, as is the case with Steve James' documentary "Life Itself," based on Roger Ebert's autobiography, which is raising funds on Indiegogo and will premiere at Sundance 2014. 3. Frightpix Expands to Web: Screen Media Ventures, LLC, owner of Popcornflix, today announced that its full length feature horror channel, Frightpix, is now available on the Web at www.frightpix.

Chris Holland worked in the film industry for more than a decade. In the early days of the internet he was a film critic and later he joined the staff of the Austin Film Festival. In 2006 Holland joined film distributor B-Side Entertainment as the Director of Festival Operations. There he worked with festivals like Sundance, AFI Fest, and SILVERDocs to market films to audiences and to discover emerging new voices in cinema. In 2008 he published "Film Festival Secrets: A Handbook for Independent Filmmakers" and began working as an consultant on marketing and festival strategy with artists around the world. Chris currently serves as the Operations and Marketing Director for the Atlanta Film Festival, where he has helped to launch the festival's first ever crowdfunding campaign. Below he writes about why the festival decided to use crowdfunding to raise money for the annual event and shares his lessons for crowdfunding. The...

Sydney’s Wsfm breakfast duo Jonesy & Amanda have won top prize at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards.
Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller picked up best on air team in the metro FM category.
Keller said: “To get industry recognition for the hard work we’ve put in over many years means a lot, I haven’t been this excited since the Ladybirds won the under 11 netball grand-final. Our production team are the best in the business and our show is an important part of our audience’s lives, what could be better than that?”
Meanwhile, Kyle Sandilands also won again, with The Kyle & Jackie O Show picking up best networked program.
Winner of the best On-Air Team (Metro Am) was the Continuous Call Team of Ray Hadley, Steve Roach, Darryl Brohman and Bob Fulton, from 2Gb. They team also won Best Sports Event Coverage for their call of the 2011 Nrl Grand Final.

Some people really know how to work a festival, including Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland, who also happens to be the author of Film Festival Secrets. Another person is Mark Potts, whose film S&M Lawn Care is one of several of his films that have played Aff. Mark was on the "The $2 or the $200,000 Film: What You Need to Know" panel, which I was planning on seeing and missed, but thanks to Chris's tweets, it was almost like I was there. Check out the hashtag for #lowbudgetfilm that Chris used to get the gist of the panel, at least Mark's comments.
I made it to the Showrunner panel with Noah Hawley and Peter Murrieta, which was moderated by Andy Langer. I loved the analogy that a Showrunner is like a writer who's also a manager of a 7-11. Sounds a lot like being a *gasp* manager. Only with assistants helping...

Oh, how I need sleep, already, even though I only did a partial day for Aff Day One 2010. Of course, I started it right by going to the Opening Night Party at Speakeasy. I finally got to meet James Faust of the Dallas International Film Festival, pictured above on the right with Houston filmmaker Kelly Sears and her friend Gabriel (I apologize, I didn't get his last name). Kelly is in town to show her short Voice on the Line, and James is a panelist/moderator this year, but I can't find where on the website. But I know he introduced one of the Ed Burns films tonight. I think he's doing another "working the festival circuit" type panel like he did last year with Chris Holland, which was very informative.
I had to leave the party early to see Bradley Scott Sullivan's I Didn't Come Here to Die,...

What are you doing in early May? Join a bunch of other Austin film lovers (including me) and head over to West Texas for the Marfa Film Festival, which takes place from May 5-9 this year.
For years -- well, as many years as Mff has been happening, which is two -- occasional Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland has been bugging me to go to Marfa, because he thinks I need to get out of Central Texas for my film festivals. (He also bugged me to go to CineVegas, but by the time I agreed, the fest went on hiatus. This better not happen with Marfa.) But Chris is absolutely right. So I am going to Mff ... and of course he backs out, the noodle. It appears, however, that a ton of Austin people make the drive or take the Marfa Bullet to the film festival, so I know I'll see a few familiar faces.

Ryan Piers Williams’ “The Dry Land,” a Sundance Film Festival favorite, took home the top prize at the Dallas International Film Festival Friday evening, earning a $25,000 cash prize for the Target Filmmaker Award for Best Narrative Feature. In addition, Lucy Walker’s “Waste Land” received a $25,000 cash prize for the Target Filmmaker Award for Best Documentary Feature.
“Dry Land” stars America Ferrera and Wilmer Valderrama were on hand during the fest. Their film follows a U.S. soldier as he returns home from Iraq to Texas and tries to assimilate back into society.
The Documentary competition jury also gave a Special Jury Prize to Michael Pertnoy’s and Michael Kleiman’s “The Last Survivor” and a Special Mention for Editing (for Claire Didier’s work on the film) to Mark Landsman’s “Thunder Soul.”

File this under Couldn't Be Happier Unless I Had Angel Money to Do This Myself... Austin-based B-Side has been acquired by Slated, and the much missed B-Side Festival Genius has been licensed to long time indie nonprofit Ifp.
Just announced Thursday night, the film community rejoiced that the best technological tool for film festivals has been revived. People were downright twitterpated, you could say. I'm re-using the same picture Jette used when she had to announce the sad news about B-Side closing its doors, because, well, B-Side founder Chris Hyams looks equally celebratory and defiant, and that attitude seems to have helped B-Side find a new home.
Personally I could not be happier for Chris and the core members of his team (Chris Holland, Jesse Trussell and Mike McCown) who are all back to work a mere six weeks after the unexpected announcement that B-Side was closing its offices. Hyams and McCown go to Slated,...

On the Friday that SXSW 2010 got underway, I spent the afternoon in a sports bar with a bunch of Cinematical reporters, supposedly to talk about our assignments but in actuality to eat junk food and argue about Kick Ass and Dogtooth and to tease our editors. Occasional Slackerwood reporter and Film Festival Secrets author Chris Holland was also in the bar with filmmaker Mark Potts, whose comedy Simmons on Vinyl I reviewed at Austin Film Festival last year.
Chris and Mark asked me if I would step outside with them for a moment so they could interview me on camera. I was hopped up on sugar and fried food and didn't actually ask what they were going to interview me about, but was thrilled that someone wanted to shoot video with me in it. We all stood out on a downtown sidewalk and Chris interviewed me while Mark shot video.

It was just yesterday that Jenn Brown and I were plotting our SXSW coverage strategy for Slackerwood (and other outlets) and hoping B-Side would host a Festival Genius site for scheduling SXSW Film. All of us at Slackerwood who have covered film festivals have loved the scheduling application from B-Side and found that it made fest planning vastly easier.
So we were very sad to learn that Austin-based B-Side Entertainment will be closing its doors this week. Filmmaker Magazine's blog is reporting that the company has been unable to find new investors and is out of funds. B-Side employees have all been laid off, many of which we've become familiar with at local film festivals -- including occasional Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland -- and we are obviously personally unhappy about the news as well. Back at SXSW 2007, I interviewed B-Side founder Chris Hyams (pictured at right) for Studio Sx (sadly,...

Day one is over, and day two is just beginning of Austin Film Festival (Food and Film event not withstanding). There's just so much to do, with so many great panels to choose from, not to mention the films.
Registration was a but slow and confusing, but I was one of those "other" people, who had a late registration as media, and then as an Austin Film Festival member, I had a free film pass to pick up as well. Had a chance to talk to a few friends, including Austin's Patrick Sullivan, who is a screenplay competition finalist. I hope we get to celebrate a win there on Saturday.
I ended up seeing Slackerwood contributor Chris Holland's panel with Kelly Williams and James Faust, "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over," moderated by Greg Garrett. Chris, as you may know, authored the book Film Festival Secrets, and as a...

In podcast #15, Jette giggles helplessly from the sidelines while Chris Holland -- in his triumphant return to Slackerwood podcasts -- and Aff Film Program Director Kelly Williams go crazy discussing/debating their picks for can't-miss movies and events during Austin Film Festival 2009. There may also be some heckling. I do manage to sneak a couple of questions in there.
Kelly gives us the inside scoop on big-name stars at marquee screenings, as well as interesting details about some lesser-known films playing Aff. He also shares a few tips for anyone who just wants to buy tickets to a movie or two during Aff.
If you're planning to attend Austin Film Festival this year, if you're on the fence about buying a film pass, or if you just need a good laugh, you won't want to miss this podcast. Disclaimer: Despite what we may have said in the podcast, Oprah Winfrey...

I took the above picture at Austin Film Festival 2008, without knowing who it was or which film was being promoted. I was working the opening-night film's red carpet and suddenly, down the block came these guys carrying a coffin. Naturally I shot a photo or two.
During the recording of Slackerwood Podcast #15 late last week, Chris Holland and Aff Film Program Director Kelly Williams discussed the feature Simmons on Vinyl, one of the selections for this year's festival. One of them joked that "This year, Mark Potts and Cole Selix won't be lugging a coffin around, like they did for The Stanton Family Grave Robbery last year." Eureka!
So the guys in this photo are almost certainly Potts, Selix and Kevin Costello, who co-wrote The Stanton Family Grave Robbery and brought it to Aff along with their coffin. Simmons on Vinyl is directed by Potts and co-written by Potts and Selix.

Not many official films today, as the festival is winding down, at least for me. I didn't manage to catch Yesterday as planned because a press screening started late. I can't say much about that, but I think I can say that if you like Vampire stories, you're in for a special treat for the Closing Night film.
I did manage to catch Stingray Sam after having had a nice chat over at the Highball with director/star Cory McAbee (shown at left). Chris Holland and I introduced him to the wonder that is Dublin Dr. Pepper, which the pharmacy next door stocks. If you haven't had one, it's very good, and made with real cane sugar. Nice guy, and he looks like he should be a regular at the Highball.
Anyway, Stingray Sam is a lot of fun, and people applauded throughout this episodic film. When I mentioned seeing the film to other festgoers,...
