IFC Films has taken worldwide rights (excluding Nordics) Bad Axe, a documentary directed by David Siev in his feature debut. In it, the filmmaker returns home to rural Michigan for an intimate look at his Asian-American family’s quest to keep their local restaurant and American dream alive amidst the pandemic and Trump-era political and racial tensions.
Bad Axe world premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and received Special Jury Recognition for Exceptional Intimacy in Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition. The festival jury noted, “Stories centered on the pursuit of the “American Dream” abound. Rarely do they portray the sacrifices and recurrent trials that the promise of a better life entails the way director David Siev accomplishes.”
IFC will release the film in theaters and on VOD in 2022.

A documentary made in secret about the life and career of rapper Tekashi69 has dropped on Hulu Monday, and the first look at the film “69: The Saga of Danny Hernandez” shows how a “cool Hispanic kid from the ghettos” became someone completely different and one of the more controversial figures in pop culture today.
Hulu surprised released its own documentary film Monday ahead of another Tekashi69 documentary series called “Supervillain” that’s meant to debut in early 2021. This one though sits down with people who knew the kid Danny Hernandez before he became 6ix9ine.
“There were two separate people at the beginning, but that morphed into one,” one of his friends says in the trailer.
Vikram Gandhi, best known for his film “Kumaré,” directs “69: The Saga of Danny Hernandez,” and this is not one of your typical glossy rock documentaries on the latest pop star of the day.

Production in the Golden State may still be in a state of stasis due to the coronavirus pandemic. Yet the money pipeline is flowing strong, as the more than $40 million in tax credits that California allocated today made very clear.
With just days left on Program 2.0 of the state’s $330 million annual film and television tax incentive scheme left before Program 3.0 kicks in with the dawn of the new fiscal year on July 1, 12 features got the nod this time round. The lucky dozen not only divvied up the dough, but also represented perhaps the greatest variation in allocations since then Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a significant expansion of the program back in 2014.
Including a likely straight to VOD sequel to 1998’s Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan’s stoner cult fave Half Baked, plus Disney/Fox’s Florida 1992-set Lady of the House drama, here is the complete list...

Cate Blanchett’s untitled Lucille Ball biopic and Sylvester Stallone’s “Little America” are among a dozen projects selected for $40 million tax credit allocations by the California Film Commission.
The list, unveiled Monday, includes “Moonshadow,” the story of a transgender teen sent to conversion camp, which also has a trans creative team, cast and crew; “Ashes to Ocean,” which revolves around an Asian family; “The Test,” which focuses on immigration and citizenship; New Regency’s thriller “Black Hole,” based on a graphic novel; and “Half Baked 2.” Universal’s “Live Feed” received the largest allocation with $10 million.
“As a project with many trans and other gender non-confirming creative team members, cast and crew, it was essential for ‘Moonshadow’ production to be based in a progressive state,” said executive producer Jude Harris. “California’s tax credit program is making it possible for us to generate jobs and production spending here at home...

The Sylvester Stallone thriller “Little America,” Aaron Sorkin’s Lucille Ball biopic with Cate Blanchett and 10 other feature films have qualified for the final round of the state of California’s tax credit program, the California Film Commission announced Monday.
The 12 projects, four of them indies and eight from studios, are on track to generate nearly $225 million in qualified spending, which is defined as below-the-line wages to California workers and payments to in-state vendors.
All 12 of the projects were scheduled to be announced as recipients to the tax credit program back in April, but the announcement was delayed as a result of the coronavirus, and the approval of these projects could indicate that the industry is getting back to work after the pandemic-driven shutdown.
Universal’s “Live Feed” will get the biggest tax credit, just over $10.0 million, followed by eOne Features’ thriler “Pursuit” ($6.6 million), Amazon’s untitled Lucille Ball project...
