The Bride is the title of the fourth studio album by singer/songwriter Natasha Khan, better known as Bat For Lashes. Khan has previously revealed that The Bride revolves around the concept of a woman who loses her fiancé on the day of their wedding. The singer delivers the nuances of this tragedy with exquisite vulnerability and self-contained dynamism, while also allowing […]

You only have to look at Zane Lowe's re-scoring of Drive to see how impassioned fans get about film soundtracks. In fairness, that was a brave undertaking, and swapping College & Electric Youth's sublime 'A Real Hero' for The 1975 in that aqueduct scene aside, it wasn't a total disaster. But the DJ's reimagining of the ineffably stylish thriller was still met with widespread scorn.
Admittedly, it was a strange choice of project (why mess with perfection?), although it's perhaps stranger still that altering the soundtrack from a film just three years old could be branded an act of sacrilege and defacement. But it's proof if proof were needed that scores worth their salt can quickly wedge themselves into the Zeitgeist and become as revered as the films themselves.
So will the same be said of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 in a few years' time? Lorde only knows…...

Lorde rounded out her all-star "Hunger Games" soundtrack quite nicely, with all-new contributions from Haim, Charli Xcx, Kanye West, Grace Jones, Bat For Lashes, Miguel, the Chemical Brothers and more. The New Zealand-bred Grammy Award winner was charged with curating the sounds for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," and the resulting tracklist below. The song titles may not tell you much about what happens in the film, but they may help indicate at least a mood. We're extra curious about the "various" artist for ambiguous "Track 5" -- described as "an additional surprise track that will be revealed soon." Kanye West makes his mark on this set with a remix, of Lorde's previously released "Yellow Flicker Beat" (dubbed "Flicker"); Lorde also combined with Stromae, Pusha T, Q-Tip and Haim for a song called "Meltdown." The Chemical Brothers and Miguel collabarated, too, on "This Is Not A Game" (above...

Lionsgate has finally revealed the full tracklist -- minus one surprise song yet to be announced -- for the Lorde-curated soundtrack to "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," and it's bursting with big names.
Among the musicians featured are Chvrches, Charli Xcx (featuring Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon), Grace Jones, Haim, Tove Lo, and a Kanye West remix of the soundtrack's first single, Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat." Another new track from Lorde is also on the album.
In addition to that lineup, Lionsgate has also released another single from the soundtrack: "This Is Not A Game," by The Chemical Brothers and featuring Miguel and a spoken-word loop from Lorde. Check out the audio for that track below, along with the full tracklist and album cover.

There is revolution stirring in the forthcoming "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1," and any good rebellion (cough blockbuster) needs a good soundtrack to go with it. Once again, the folks behind the Jennifer Lawrence-led Ya adaptation will be bringing some serious noise. The full soundtrack details for 'Mockingjay' have been revealed: if you like you jams with a pop or electronic tinge, tunes by The Chemical Brothers, Chvrches and Lorde should keep you satisfied, with Kanye West himself stepping in to remix the latter's "Yellow Flicker Beat." Distinctive singer/songwriter Bat For Lashes drops by, as well as crew-cutted '80s dance diva Grace Jones, while Stromae enlists a killer guest line up (Lorde, Pusha T, Q-Tip, Haim) for "Meltdown." Though the rest of us will see the film next month, audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival will get to see the Kevin MacDonald-helmed “How I Live Now” next week. The sci-fi film will boast an impressive soundtrack that includes a collaboration between Natasha Khan (of Bat For Lashes fame) and famed producer Jon Hopkins. Ahead of its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, a music video for the collaboration has arrived online (via Digital Spy). Directed by Khan herself as her directorial debut, the video for “Garden’s Heart” doesn’t have much in the way of new footage from the film and instead has the film’s star Saoirse Ronan tending to her wounds and dealing with live vines and plants. It’s a moody and evocative piece that wonderfully complements the equally evocative Khan and Hopkins track. Fans of Khan’s solo project won’t be...

There is nothing new to speak of in “Secondhand Rapture”, the first full-length album by New York duo Ms Mr. Whether that is a compliment or a criticism is something that has to be taken with some thought though; the band’s entire style seems to be firmly routed in a vintage style that resonates with a lot of their fans, particularly through their online promotion. In many ways, they have become the “first band of Tumblr”, with their feed on that website being the location for many of their original single releases, as well as a cavalcade of retro-filtered photos of the Addams Family and various other kitsch nostalgia images. The music videos for original singles like “Hurricane” and “Bones” used snippets from old movies and TV shows to tell a story.
It is not just in the imagery that they surround themselves with that Ms Mr may seem familiar.

Frank Miller isn't a complicated man, but his work does seem to suggest that he's fine with sticking to the "Sin City"/"The Spirit" millieu thankyouverymuch. And after teaming with Evan Rachel Wood and Chris Evans a couple of years ago for a stylish Gucci spot, the director has paired up with the actors again to make another ad for the fashion house. Once again going monochrome, and throwing in some rain for good measure, the spot is pretty simple: Evans rolls up on a motorcycle, goes into Wood's fancy car, and they make love on the backseat on top of a fur coat all while zipping through a retro future world or something. Somewhere in here, you will be convinced to buy Gucci Guilty Black, if only so you don't smell like wet fur. Anyway, give it a spin below. And in case you're wondering, the song is "Strangelove...

The album cover is The Haunted Man’s visual manifesto: more minimal, seemingly vulnerable, but only on the surface. Fuzzy synths in album opener ‘Lilies’ crumble around Natasha Khan’s quietly confident crooning and an erudite guitar gets slowly plucked in the mistily-produced latter half of the song. Khan’s earnest voice intones ‘thank God I’m alive’, and it sounds like she means it. There’s a worn shoebox quality to the clip-clop percussion of ‘All Your Gold’ that really pushes forward the apparent sparseness and restraint employed over the course of this album in comparison to previous record Two Suns. The lyrics evoke the ‘haunted man’ theme of the record, wherein she sings ‘and you’re a good man’, as though the person she’s addressing needs such a reassurance, or indeed her own person. The song’s orchestral denouement is both solemn and comforting.

Tribeca is pleased to host the exclusive premiere of 'Creating The Haunted Man,' the new short film by lauded English songstress Natasha Khan (better known as Bat for Lashes). The film is in addition to the new Bat for Lashes album that will be released stateside on October 23 from Capitol Records. As the short film demonstrates, Bat for Lashes continues to push herself as an artist. The singer willingly shares her creative process through thoughtful narration interlaced with tracks from the new album. Set on the English coast that provided inspiration, she describes her growing maturity and creative process as 'gradually stripping back the layers, editing and editing until something feels like it fits.' The ethereal photography of the surroundings compliment rare insights into the artist's choices and intentions as she assembles her latest album. Bat for Lashes' musings about the nature of her unique and soulful sound...

Back in 2006, Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan made her debut as the somber-voiced songstress of the year. Lana del Rey may have usurped the crown of moody crooning in recent months, but Khan is about to give the “Video Games” singer a run for her money. Bat For Lashes’ latest record, The Haunted Man, will be released Oct. 23 and comes complete with a cover shot by art-world darling Ryan McGinley featuring Khan clad in a whole lot of nothing. The first single off the album, “Laura,” recently hit the web, and comes accompanied by a slow, elegiac music ...

Mercury Prize-nominated songwriter Bat For Lashes is back, and out the gate, she's... solemn. "Laura" -- the first track from forthcoming album "The Haunted Man" -- has a music video featuring a haunted man and an interpretive dance honoring the song's namesake. The nervous, slow waltz showcases BfL's ringing voice, which would sound just marvelous in a velvet red curtained room. But I also can't shake what it reminds me of: "Ooo Laura, you're more than a superstar" is eerily reminiscent of Barry Manilow's "Mandy" (or if you prefer The Simpsons version, "Margie / You came and found me a turkey")....

Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes, has covered Depeche Mode's "Strangelove" (off 1987's Music for the Masses) for a new Gucci campaign. The fashion label brought her in to bring some goth street cred to their Guilty fragrance, which you can smell here.
It doesn't swoon quite like the brooding pop masterpiece which first drew me to her, but it's a solid cover. Something about the way Khan delivers it hints at more S&M than the original. I'm sure Martin Gore would approve. "Strangelove" streams below and you can head here to download it.

As previously heard with her rendition of Radiohead's "All I Need", Bat for Lashes, a.k.a. Natasha Khan, does a frightfully good job covering other people's songs. And now she's back with a version of Depeche Mode's "Strangelove," which suits her just as well. Given Khan's ethereal voice and the gothic overtones of her own music, it's nice to hear her take on the sultry synth-pop of her forebears. The song was apparently recorded as part of a promotion for a new Gucci fragrance (perfumes apparently need soundtracks, nowadays) and since they won't let anyone on the internet embed the track, head over to their site and listen [...]...

Esben And The Witch struck its most dramatic ice-queen pose on the doom-minus-the-gloom single “Marching Song.” On the rest of its Matador debut, Violet Cries, the Brighton band never summons the same apocalyptic fury. Instead, it contents itself with layering Rachel Davies’ dark, dramatic vocals over arpeggiating, post-rock guitars and minimalist electronic percussion like a more abstract Bat For Lashes. “Light Streams” nearly provides another dose of that delicious, goth-tinged tension in its downbeat finale, as muffled male vocals trade blows with Davies over atmospheric drums in the background and scratched-disc clicks and skips in the fore. Also strong is ...

Much of this past year was spent talking about the visual aspect of movies, what with the whole 3-D revolution (or plague, depending on your perspective) and the increased sophistication of CGI effects. But let’s not forget the other half of the audio/visual equation.
There were plenty of musical moments to celebrate at the theater in 2010, and fans of film soundtracks had plenty to hang their hats on.
Here are our picks for the best of the bunch, and whether your tastes run to hip-hop, rock, or just a big, ol’ “Bonnnnng” sound, there’s something here for your ears.

There wasn’t much to celebrate about the latest Happy Madison production (unless you were one of the film’s stars and got to hang out with your comedian buddies for a couple months on the company dime), but if there’s one thing every Adam Sandler movie knows,...

At some point over the past 20 years, movie soundtracks went from being well-curated mixtapes that served as companion pieces to the actual films in question to a simple conglomeration of throwaway hit singles and up-and-coming artists that labels are desperate to promote. So when a great movie soundtrack comes along, it feels extra special when compared to the developments of recent history. The MTV Newsroom Blog takes movie soundtracks very seriously, which is why we've been keeping close tabs on the developments in the soundtrack universe over the past 12 months. And while 2010 wasn't as great as, say, 1999 (the year that the accompanying albums to "Fight Club," "The Matrix," "Go" and "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" all delivered exceptional results), there were still some excellent soundtracks this year. In no particular order, here are the five best movie soundtracks of 2010.

Thanks to Jay-z and Beyoncé repping for Grizzly Bear and hanging out at Coachella to see some Pitchfork-approved acts, indie rock and hip-hop have been having a very public love affair lately. Sometimes it's a late night hook-up that is walk-of-shame worthy in the morning (paging Weezer and Lil Wayne) and other times it's so seamless you wonder why nobody thought of it before. Kid Cudi rolled out the carpe for Ratatat and Mgmt on his studio debut, Ghostface Killah has admitted to loving Vampire Weekend and the Black Keys chopped it up with everyone from Mos Def to RZA and Raekwon on the Blakroc album.
In the most recent example, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon revealed that he spent a couple days earlier this year in Hawaii with Kanye West, laying down some of his patented hushed, pastoral vocals for 10 songs that might appear on West's upcoming CD. That...

Muse has appeared on every Twilight soundtrack thus far, and while their dark rock music suits the movies, they’re also a favorite of author Stephenie Meyer. Yes, she has dedicated books to the band. Muse, it seems, is her muse. But Chris ain’t so sold on the whole ‘appear on a cheesy tween movie soundtrack, get billions of fans’ formula, telling BBC’s Radio 1, “It’s very difficult in America, because you don’t have anything like Radio 1, nothing is national. You have to take every opportunity you get over there, and sometimes you have to sell your soul.” Chris also added, “I’m not sure how cool it is to...

Essential Sounds (2010/07/10)

Worth noting, the Dead Weather track features mostly Alison Mosshart on vocals instead of Jack White; Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes shares the vocal duties with Beck on the electronica-leaning "Let's Get Lost"; the Battles track is vocal-heavy; Cee-Lo Green went the rock route; "Jacob's Theme" is apparently really sad; Muse song is still cheesy as hell; and the Metric...
