Actress Sushmita Sen, who is set to play transgender activist Gauri Sawant in the web series ‘Taali’, took 6 months for the project but she learnt every dialogue by heart. It was Gauri Sawant’s Pil (public interest litigation) that led to a landmark Supreme Court judgement in 2014, recognising the transgender community as the third gender.
The creative duo behind ‘Taali’ Arjun Singgh Baran and Kartk D. Nishandar revealed that the actress did her homework quite well.
The creative duo recalled the passion with which Sushmita immersed herself into Gauri’s life. They said: “She took around six months to say okay to the script and she knew it by heart. So in tune with the script she was by then that during the shoot, if we added or changed a line, she would tell us instantly that it wasn’t there originally. She does her homework very well.”

‘Awake’ is Atul Mongia’s debut film. This 23-minute short, written and directed by him, is a part of this year’s Mami Year Round Programme. It is also chosen for the We Are One Global Film Festival. Atul has had a long-spanning career as one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed casting directors. Besides being an actor himself, he has trained many contemporary Bollywood actors over the years. While having worked in front of the camera for a few projects, this is Atul’s first effort of being behind the camera and pulling all the strings.
Through “Awake”, he presents us with the mundanity of the lives of today’s relationships. We are introduced to a few couples who seem to be doing well-off financially. The protagonist (Sameera), who is initially introduced just as a person behind the lens, gets her own identity beyond her profession as a photographer. She...

CinemaThe film is streaming on YouTube for seven days as part of the global online film festival.Sowmya RajendranAwake reminded me of William and Mary, a short story by Roald Dahl. A philosopher dies but his brain connected to one eye is kept alive, as part of a science experiment to which he had consented. His wife is at first upset with the arrangement, but slowly, she begins to enjoy the power she has over him, something she never had in their unequal marriage. It's a dark, disturbing and rewarding read. The premise for Awake, presently streaming on YouTube for seven days as part of the global online film festival on the 'We are One' channel, is more muted but evokes a similar disquiet. Directed by Atul Mongia, Awake is about a photographer named Sameera (an excellent Ishika Mohan Motwane) and her comatose husband Vikram. On the surface, Sameera appears to be a devout wife,...

It opens into a smile as a man swims ashore on a dark night. The swimmer asks the man with the calm face something. In reply, he lifts his fingers and moves them around. The swimmer understands him. No one else does, Calm Face says in sign language, ‘only you do’. Calm Face’s name is Amir. A beautiful character in Geetu Mohandas’s new film, Moothon. Actor Mohit Malik, who has taken a break from playing the sensitive and compassionate character Sikander in the TV show "Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala", says the decision to make him play a double role was not an impulsive call but a creative one.
"Playing a 10-year-old does come with its fair share of challenges but it is more mental than physical. All this while, I was mostly crying. It does get exhausting. A 10-year-old is non-judgmental, uninhibited, innocent, naive, a clean slate, and playing him has given me a different perspective to life," Mohit said in a statement here.
"It was high time I wanted to break free from playing Sikander. As much as it was satisfying and I had finally found my comfort zone, it also took a toll on my health. The other character that I play is that of an imposter, a thug. For the first five hours,...

Mumbai, April 8 – There isn’t one recognisable face in ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ (LSD), yet audiences are flocking to see the actors. Behind this casting coup of a different kind is Atul Mongia, the man who selected and trained them.
‘The vision was director Dibakar Banerjee’s. He gave me a brief for each character. It was up to me to find the perfect fit,’ Mongia, who also acted in the film, told Ians.
Most of the actors in LSD – audiences are raving about them – faced the camera for the first time.
‘There’s an actor in each one of us. All of us.
