New Delhi, July 19 – A reporter’s despatch can make a serious Hollywood statement. And that was the case with Pulitzer prize-winning Indian journalist Geeta Anand, formerly associated with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
She wrote a regular biotechnology story with a human interest angle about a frantic American dad, John Crowley, hunting for a cure to Pompe disease, a muscular condition that had struck two of his children. It went on to become the movie, ‘Extraordinary Measures’, and her own book, ‘The Cure’.

Chicago – A very subdued and scientific Harrison Ford recently spoke with HollywoodChicago.com and two other Chicago film critics on the subject of his new true-story film “Extraordinary Measures”. Ford stars in the film and served as its executive producer since inception.
At one point in our interview, the 67-year-old Chicago native calmly uttered a minor expletive and then reminded us that we have the choice about whether or not to print it. While the interview style of some actors can fall into the more eccentric bucket, the Ford experience on this day was decidedly professional, conservative and relatively serious.

By Susan Granger - If this reminds you of a TV-disease-of-the-week tearjerker, that's because it's the first theatrical release from CBS Films, a division of the broadcast network that seems to be testing whether audiences will pay for cable-caliber melodramas at the box-office.
John Crowley (Brendan Fraser) is a pharmaceutical executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb. He and his wife Aileen (Keri Russell), have three children. Their oldest son (Sam M. Hall) is fine, but their two younger children, eight year-old Megan (Meredith Droeger), and six year-old Patrick (Diego Velazquez), suffer from a rare, genetic form of muscular dystrophy called Pompe's disease. They live on respirators and in wheelchairs. Medicine offers no treatment and no cure."Extraordinary Measures" (CBS Films)

Extraordinary Measures (2010) is a film based on the true story of Aileen and John Crowley, parents of two children suffering from Pompe, an incurable genetic disorder. The couple risked their financial future and gambled on the fate of their family, to help save their children. The trailer alone can bring a grown man to weep, so you can only imagine what happens after an hour and forty-five minutes of pure inspiration. Action superstar Harrison Ford had been looking for a film to get involved with, and by happenstance, he came across the book "The Cure" by Geeta Anand, based on the story of The Crowley Family and scientist Dr. Stonehill. Ford broke away from his action type cast pattern, and agreed to star in the Disney-esque film about the true story of one family's fight against death. Keri Russell plays the mother, Aileen Crowley, and does a fantastic job of...

Superstar Harrison Ford got his big break in Hollywood while he was on his knees doing a carpentry job for filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and the actor believes there is nothing better than the profession to get into showbiz. It was when Ford was first noticed by director George Lucas, who gave the actor a break with Star Wars. The 67-year-old actor, who plays Dr Robert Stonehill, a eccentric research scientist in Extraordinary Measures, a film based on Indian writer Geeta Anand's novel The Cure, says it was perseverance and tenacity that helped him survive in Hollywood. There are lots of puns that could be mined from the title, but the truth is, Extraordinary Measures is a movie that is much better suited to the small screen. It is a mediocre film at best, but I suppose some people might be find its story of triumph over insurmountable odds moving. The crowd I saw the film with seemed to enjoy it a lot more than I did.
The film is loosely based on the book The Cure, by Geeta Anand, which chronicles the true story of the Crowley family and their battle with pompe disease (a neuromuscular disorder related to muscular dystrophy). It follows their race to find a treatment before two of their three children die from the disease. Having one child with this horrible disease is horrible enough, having two is incomprehensible.

Extraordinary Measures had the potential to be a full-blown tear-jerker. Luckily, the movie decided to focus on the other aspects of the story based on Geeta Anand's novel The Cure. A story inspired by true events, such as this one, is always going to tug at the heart-strings. In this particular delivery, the script takes a subtle approach in the pain-and-suffering department. What hooks the audience in, is the complex relationship between the two main characters.
Our story begins with John Crowley (Brendan Fraser), an Ivy league business school alumni, desperately searching for a cure for Pompe disease. Two of his three children have this rare genetic disorder, and have very little time left. His wife (Keri Russell) tirelessly seek out ways to find a cure. Attention, Lorenzo.s Oil! You.ve been cloned! The 1992 fact-based medical drama with Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon follows a father desperate to save his terminally ill son by creating a new and revolutionary treatment. Extraordinary Measures tells a similar story about a determined father seeking a cure for a disease that threatens the lives of his son and daughter, based on Geeta Anand.s book "The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million - And Bucked the Medical Establishment - in a Quest to Save His Children". Extraordinary Measures offers a bromantic twist as Harrison Ford.s scientific researcher and Brendan Fraser.s desperate father join forces to create a cure for Pompe, a deadly childhood disease. Note to TV networks: If you’re looking to break into theaters, it’s probably unwise to start out with a programmatic, by-the-book TV movie that implies your new theatrical-film imprint will be playing things safe and bland. (Or alternately, that you can’t see past the stereotyped version of your own bailiwick.) Unfortunately, this advice comes too late for the new subsidiary CBS Films, which is launching its theatrical endeavors with the disease-of-the-week drama Extraordinary Measures. Loosely inspired by Geeta Anand’s book The Cure, it follows the story of real-life father John Crowley (played by Brendan Fraser), who ...

It seems strange to say Harrison Ford is underrated as an actor; he is, after all, the No. 1 worldwide box-office star of all time, with a roster of hit films and franchises whose audiences cross all age and gender lines. He created two of the most recognizable and beloved icons in film history: space cowboy Han Solo in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, and the wisecracking, whip-snapping, fedora-sporting Indiana Jones. But in a career spanning five decades, Ford has also turned in remarkable performances in a world not so far, far away. Complex roles as philandering husbands in hits like "Presumed Innocent" and "What Lies Beneath" showed the actor was willing to risk his likable image. He made offbeat choices with 1982's "Blade Runner" and 1986's "The Mosquito Coast"—performances and films that didn't fare well at the time but have come to be heralded in recent years. And then...

To accompany the theatrical trailer for Extraordinary Measures which was released last week, here’s the new International version of the trailer. We’ve also got some new images which I’ve embedded below and you can click to enlarge. Extraordinary Measures is directed by Tom Vaughn and stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell. It’s set for release 26th February 2010.
Extraordinary Measures is inspired by a Wall Street Journal article recounting one man’s remarkable efforts to save his children from a life threatening disease. Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser star as the brilliant but unconventional scientist and the passionate father who form an unlikely alliance in pursuit of a medical miracle. Keri Russell portrays Aileen Crowley. Harrison Ford is executive producer and in fact brought the story to producers Michael Shamberg and Stacy Sher after reading Pulitzer prize-winning writer Geeta Anand’s Wall St Journal article on the Crowley’s.

Harrison Ford is, and always will be, the man. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that his career has been sputtering for some time now (Indiana Jones notwithstanding), and with his latest film Extraordinary Measures, it seems unlikely that he is going to reclaim the audience that has been slowly slipping away from him. The movie co-stars Brendan Fraser, and while I might have been interested if this was a buddy comedy (ha!), instead we have a serious drama about a father looking for someone to help him cure his children of a rare genetic disorder. Just look at that picture... even these guys can't believe they ended up in this movie. Extraordinary Measures is based on the true story of John Crowley as documented in the book The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million – And Bucked the Medical Establishment – In a Quest to Save His Children.
