One day, perhaps even in our lifetime, human beings will be living on Mars. When that time comes, not every colonist will be a super scientist or engineer, there would still be a need for cooks, janitors, and… graphic designers? Max has released the first official trailer for Fired on Mars, a workplace comedy series which tells the story of Jeff Cooper, a man who finds himself adrift after taking a one-way trip to the Red Planet only to have his bosses unceremoniously eliminate his role.
Luke Wilson stars as Jeff Cooper in Fired on Mars, leading a cast which includes Leslie David Baker, Cory Loykasek, Stephen Root, and Cedric Yarbrough. The eight-episode series will also feature Pamela Adlon, Thomas Haden Church, Tim Heidecker, Frankie Quinones, Emily Watson, and Sean Wing in guest-starring roles.

"I feel like I'm bothering your friend..." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for a wacky indie comedy titled Some of Our Stallions, the latest from filmmaker Carson Mell. This buddy comedy-drama comes from the filmmakers behind Brigsby Bear, Silicon Valley, and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. When best friends Beautiful Bill and Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, struggle to fit into regular society, Bill decides they need romantic love. This kicks off a years-long series of misadventures that challenge not only their friendship, but their grasp on sanity. Carson Mell wrote and directed the film in which he also stars alongside Al Di and Olivia Taylor Dudley; also joined by Tim Heidecker, David Zellner, Stefan Djuric, and Mike Judge. This looks way more complex and zanier than expected, with some impressively witty humor and three great lead performances. Here's the first official...

After writing for Silicon Valley and Eastbound and Down, as well as scripting The Long Dumb Road, Carson Mell has written, directed, and starred in a new feature titled Some of Our Stallions. Also led by Al Di and Olivia Taylor Dudley, with appearances by Tim Heidecker, David Zellner, and Mike Judge, the first trailer has arrived ahead of a July 2 release.
The oddball buddy comedy follows Beautiful Bill & Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, who are best friends. With their sanity still slipping, they attempt to reintegrate back into society by meeting like-minded women at a nearby mental health facility. With his writing experience, Mell currently has a strong grasp at dark comedy, so hopefully he succeeds in what looks like a tricky tonal balance.
See the trailer and poster below.
Some of Our Stallions opens in theaters and VOD on July 2.

Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American distribution rights to Fully Realized Humans, an indie comedy from director Joshua Leonard. The film, which screened at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, will get a day-and-date release on July 30.
Leonard co-wrote and co-stars alongside Jess Weixler in what is described as an honest and hilarious portrait of a married couple on the precipice of parenthood. The pic follows Jackie (Weixler) and Elliot (Leonard) who, with less than a month until the birth of their first child, embark on a madcap odyssey of self-discovery in an attempt to rid themselves of the inherited dysfunction of their own upbringings.
Ross Partridge, Janicza Bravo, Jennifer Lafleur, Beth Grant, Tom Bower, and Michael Chieffo co-star. Leonard also produced the pic with Chelsea Bo and Sean Drummond. Gravitas Ventures Vice President of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi negotiated the deal with Ben Schwartz and Josh Braun of Submarine.

The upcoming “Clone High” reboot is headed to HBO Max, which will also host a slew of new and returning adult animated television shows.
WarnerMedia announced HBO Max had ordered two seasons of “Clone High,” a third season of “Close Enough,” as well as two new original series titled “Velma” and “Fired on Mars” during a virtual panel at the Television Critics Association 2021 Winter Press Tour. The titles will significantly bulk up HBO Max’s slate of adult animated shows, which have become increasingly popular on streaming services in recent years.
The “Clone High” reboot has been expected. MTV announced that it was rebooting the cult hit comedy series in July 2020, though a distributor wasn’t announced at the time. Carson Mell was a legit Sundance discovery and perhaps we can call him an actual triple threat as he premiered his first three shorts in three consecutive editions – an impressive and rare feat that we believe only Robert Machoian might have recently accomplished. After 2007’s Bobby Bird: The Devil in Denim, 2008’s Chonto and 2009’s Field Notes from Dimension X: Oasis, Mell’s directorial debut Another Evil landed at SXSW while The Long Dumb Road, a project he co-wrote with Hannah Fidell was a Sundance entry in 2018. If selected for Sundance, his second feature film titled Some of Our Stallions would be among the most prepped in post production items as filming took place way back in February of 2019 in Vancouver.…...

“Room 104” comes to an end this week after a four-year run unlike any other in TV history. Its anthology framework wasn’t new, its roster of writers and directors included plenty of experienced TV vets, and many of these episodes had foundations in genres that have been on screens for decades.
Over 48 episodes, what this show did have was Room 104 itself, a drab four-wall set — and a blank canvas for anyone lucky enough to get the chance to play inside. Whether the storytellers that came through used that vague premise as an experiment, a challenge, or a chance to tell a story that could only exist within those confines, each new chapter was worth watching to see which path it took.
In fact, even though we’ve explained why we picked the 10 episodes below as some of the show’s best, it’s almost worth going in without...

Ending months of speculation, HBO has confirmed that the upcoming sixth season of comedy series Silicon Valley will be its last. Currently in pre-production, Season 6 will consist of seven episodes and premiere later this year.
“Silicon Valley has been a career and life highlight for us,” series executive producers/showrunners Mike Judge and Alec Berg said. “We’ll miss it desperately, but we’ve always let Pied Piper’s journey guide the way, and Season 6 seems to be the fitting conclusion. We are forever indebted to our incredible cast, crew and partners at HBO. At a certain point, there’s only so much we can do to make the world a better place.”
Rumors about Silicon Valley possibly coming to an end started when Season 6 was delayed, largely to accommodate Berg, who co-created and runs fellow HBO comedy series Barry. All previous seasons of Silicon Valley, ranging from eight to 10 episodes,...

HBO’s comedy series Silicon Valley is taking a long break between Season 5 and and Season 6. Renewed for a sixth season last summer, Silicon Valley is likely not going to go into production until this summer. That is in part because its executive producer/showrunner Alec Berg also runs fellow HBO comedy series Barry, which he co-created.
The long delay and the series’ age have prompted much speculation that Silicon Valley‘s sixth season would be its last.
“In terms of last season, it’s a natural question; we have had conversations with them,” HBO president of programming Casey Bloys told Deadline. “Obviously when you get to the sixth season of a show, you have to talk about how much more is there in this, do you want to do more, so we have had those conversations. To be honest, what (the producers) want to do is get in the (writers) room,...

HBO is pushing back the start of production on the sixth season of “Silicon Valley” in order to accommodate showrunner Alec Berg’s same responsibilities on “Barry.”

“As Alec Berg is a showrunner on both ‘Barry’ and ‘Silicon Valley,’ the schedule was structured to allow Alec to wrap on ‘Barry’ before starting work on ‘Silicon Valley,'” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement.

It’s not always a compliment to note that a movie feels like the right fit for Sundance. Festival faves often deflate when they reach the real world, unable to survive without the eager enthusiasm of film fans. The Sundance premiere “The Long Dumb Road” is undeniably cut from familiar cloth. But it’s got enough charm to keep it buoyant long after Robert Redford waves the last blogger goodbye.

Life can be hard, but a road trip with funnymen can often do the trick of lightening the load—for audiences and characters alike. So it goes with The Long Dumb Road, a comedy on the road of the American Southwest that looks at the small but still stark generational divide between its two central characters: Nat (played by Tony Revolori) and Richard (Jason Mantzoukas). In the film, Nat is an aspiring photographer who is bound for college and a shiny new future; Richard is a 30-something millennial who just wants a buddy for the drive, and maybe the chance to get drunk all across the open road of Americana that lies between blue dot Austin, Texas and the dream factory that is Los Angeles.

If a road trip with Jason Mantzoukas and Tony Revolori sounds like your idea of a good time, then you’re going to love “The Long Dumb Road.” The new comedy from “A Teacher” filmmaker Hannah Fidell stars these two charmers as an odd couple thrust together by a little bit of chance, a whole lot of chutzpah, and one very questionable decision. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released the first official trailer for “The Long Dumb Road” Thursday, and Mantzoukas stands out as the wacky star of this buddy comedy.
The synopsis reads: “Nat (Revolori), an aspiring photographer, is heading towards a bright future in art school in Los Angeles and wants to find the real America en route to new beginnings out West; Richard (Mantzoukas), a lovably unkempt motormouth, is simply looking for connection in the moment — and maybe a beer or ten — while he grapples with indecision, past mistakes and dead-ends.

Following the recent season premieres of both shows, HBO has renewed the freshman comedy series Barry and returning fan favorite Silicon Valley. The announcement was made by Amy Gravitt, executive vice president, HBO Programming.
“While Barry has delighted audiences with its deft interplay of comedy and drama, Silicon Valley remains as brilliantly and frighteningly prescient as ever,” noted Gravitt. “We’re thrilled that these two smart, funny shows are returning for another season.”
Created by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, Barry launched its eight-episode first season March 25. Hader stars in the title role as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest who finds himself drawn into a community of acting students while on a hit job in La. He wants to start a new life, but his criminal past won’t let him walk away. Can he find a way to balance the two worlds?

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group has purchased North American rights to Hannah Fidell’s road trip comedy “The Long Dumb Road,” starring Jason Mantzoukas and Tony Revolori.
The film made its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Fidell and co-written by Fidell and Carson Mell, the film also stars Taissa Farmiga, Grace Gummer, and Ron Livingston.
Revolori plays a college-bound teenager who offers an itinerant 30-something mechanic (Mantzoukas) a ride during a stop-over in small-town Texas. As they travel through the American Southwest, both passengers come alive through the myriad possibilities of the open road as they find connection, comfort and chaos in their shared journey.
In her review for Variety, Amy Nicholson said, “Fidell’s third film after her darker dramas ‘A Teacher’ and ‘6 Years’ is a light-fingered diversion. She keeps an eye on class. People continually offer each other small amounts of cash...

HBO’s Silicon Valley Season 6 will be the final exploits of the embattled tech entrepreneurs of Pied Piper.
Silicon Valley Season 6 is definitely happening on HBO! Unfortunately it will be the show's final season.
Variety reports that HBO has announced that Silicon Valley Season 6 will be the final go-around for Pied Piper. This makes sense as the story has largely run its course and showrunner Alec Berg is moonlighting on Barry. Still, we'll be sad to see Richard and Co. go.
Silicon Valley is the creation of Mike Judge, John Atlschuler, and Dave Krinsky. It's executive produced by creators Judge and Berg, joined in that capacity by Clay Tarver, Michael Rotenberg, Tom Lassally, Jim Kleverweis, with co-executive producers Jamie Babbit, Anthony King, Graham Wagner, and Ron Weiner. They are joined by consulting producers Carrie Kemper, Carson Mell, Jonathan Dotan, Todd Silverstein and Josh Lieb.

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.
“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.
During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.
“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.
Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...

Think of your standard YouTube character tribute videos. Three seasons of a show like “Silicon Valley” usually get you some classic one-liners, memorable character beats and a few outtakes for good measure, all wrapped up in a few minutes.
This one for Jared, Zach Woods’ character on HBO’s “Silicon Valley,” runs the length of an entire episode of the show.
Jared has always been at the center of the “Silicon Valley” story (there he is on the Season 1 poster, in full Steve Jobs pose, literally at the side of Pied Piper co-founder Richard Hendricks), but Woods has grown to be the show’s heart too. In a world of backstabbing and self-interest, Jared has remained the show’s sole, true altruist.
“I sometimes think of it as an archetypical family,” Woods said. “Erlich is the rambunctious father, Kumail is the baby boy, Gilfoyle is the cat and Richard is like the favorite son.

Dark Sky Films will bring a strange story, to the screen. The film is titled Another Evil. From director Carson D. Mell, the film is a blend of horror and comedy. Recently, it showed at SXSW, in Austin and the Fantasia Film Festival. Another Evil is now set to see a few theatres in May and Video-on-demand. The film stars: Steve Zissis (Roadies), Jennifer Irwin (The Goldbergs) and Mark Proksch ("Better Call Saul"). A preview for the film's launch is hosted here. Os Bijourn is more than an alcoholic. He is also an unwanted boarder. But still, there are more demons to track down, in Dan's home. With no end on the horizon, Dan will have to take extreme measures to rid himself of both ghosts and this lonely ghosthunter. The film's official trailer is hosted here. It shows Dan and Os putting together various ghost traps. Some are more effective than others.

"Meet Os. A Straight Up Ghost Assassin." Dark Sky Films has released a trailer for a horror comedy titled Another Evil, about a wacky ghost exterminator named Os who is hired to get rid of a ghost in a summer home. Steve Zissis (from "Togetherness") stars as Dan, the guy who moves into his family's vacation home and encounters a ghost. The cast includes Jennifer Irwin, Mark Proksch as Os, Dan Bakkedahl, Dax Flame, Steve Little, and Mariko Munro. This looks very fun, I'm glad that we finally get to see another comedic take on haunted house and ghost exterminators (one of the only other ones I can think of is The Frighteners). It feels like this would be a nice double feature with What We Do in the Shadows. Have fun. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Carson D. When you hear that a movie was one of the funniest things anyone saw at SXSW and then follow it up with info that the writer/direct has also written for "Eastbound and Down" and "Silicon Valley," one naturally prepares for laughs. At least I did when I sat down to watch Carson D. Mell's Another Evil.
The thing with comedy is that, even more so than other genres, it's very particular and what works for some doesn't work for others and as much as I've enjoyed Mell's other work, this really isn't for me.
The concept for Another Evil is pretty typical horror stuff. Dan, an artist, is spending some time at his vacation home with his wife Mary and their teenage son when they begin to see apparitions. Convinced that the house has become haunted, Mary finds an exorcist to co [Continued ...]...
