When a jury determined “Blurred Lines” borrowed from Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” and Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were ordered to pay millions of dollars in damages, it not only shook up the music industry but also set off a flurry of other lawsuits that made songwriters more willing to give credit, whether it was due or not.
After the 2015 decision, John Legend argued that the verdict would set a bad precedent for artists creating music inspired by others. It certainly set a precedent for legal action as other veteran songwriters decided to go after hitmakers they felt were a little too inspired by their work. Some went to trial, others settled outside the courtroom and a number of artists began extending writing credit to older songs — some because the melodies were similar but others to avoid a repeat of the “Blurred Lines” backlash.

The Fray’s Joe King is ready to step out solo with a new pop-oriented project, with a radio-ready single and an album in the wings. The Colorado-based songwriter will be releasing new music under the simple name King and aims to release an Ep of fresh material by April. Since starting out 11 years ago, The Fray has featured King and singer Isaac Slade splitting songwriting duties, each track a collaboration. After three albums, some No. 1 hit singles and millions of tickets sold, King felt that the time was now to hunker down and release tracks that are all his, from...

The Fray's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Monday's (April 2) Ncaa national title game between the Kentucky Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks could have been subtitled, "Why the National Anthem Should Never Be Given an Emo Twist." The performance is now earning the band some backlash, though, at least they remembered all the words -- which is more than can be said for some performers.
The arrangement included two guitars, a marching snare drum and a tambourine, along with the emo mark of earnest vocals from the Denver, Colo., band's frontman Isaac Slade.
What did you think of the Fray's version of the national anthem?...

Unless you’re the late, great Whitney Houston, it’s tough to perform a “Star-Spangled Banner” that people actually like. Take risks, and you’ll sound too screechy; concentrate on bombastic vocals, and you’ll mess up the words; play it safe, and some may accuse you of being boring. So we can hardly blame The Fray for trying to curry favor by mashing up two things Americans love more than anything: patriotism and the Muppets.

The Fray may be known for their relaxed music and its frequent use on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but frontman Isaac Slade isn’t keen on anyone pointing that out exactly.
Slade – who just released The Fray’s third album, Scars and Stories, earlier this month – has got his sights set on The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers for derogatory comments the singer made about Slade’s group.
Slade talked to the Daily Star about this beef, saying, “When we started making the album, I saw footage on YouTube of Brandon getting mad at a Killers crowd who were a little sedate. Brandon was yelling, ‘Come on, stand up and dance. This isn’t a f**king Fray show.’”
Well, that little comment hasn’t sat too well with Slade. While he surprisingly admitted that his shows can be a bit on the chill side, he doesn't necessarily see...

The Fray have said that they are "proud" of their new album. The band released their third studio record Scars & Stories in the UK on Monday (March 5) and played a gig as part of an Absolute Radio Session held at the Hard Rock Cafe in London to celebrate. I mean, we're all attached to various songs for different reasons, but I'm proud of it. The Fray's new song "Heartbeat" seems to be about reviving a broken relationship, with lyrics like "I wanna kiss your scars tonight, and baby, you gotta try, you gotta let me in."
But the inspiration for the rock tune has little to do with a failed romance. Instead, it comes from one of the worst tragedies in recent memory – the genocide in Rwanda nearly two decades ago.
Lead singer and writer Isaac Slade was visiting the Rwandan capital of Kigali last year when he found himself standing on the site where more than 250,000 victims of the country's 1994 genocide were buried. Then he had an epiphany.
"(I was) at this gathering with a bunch of local (people) and ex-pats, all standing in circle holding hands, just kind of thinking and talking about Rwanda. This chick was standing next to me and I couldn't tell if it was her heartbeat or mine,...

As The Fray came together to work on what would become its third Epic album, “Scars & Stories,” the quartet had a collective dark night of the soul; one that could have spelled the end for the multi-platinum piano rock act best known for radio smashes such as “How To Save A Life” and “Over My Head (Cable Car).” They were in the studio working up songs for “S&S,” out today, and “all four of us were coming of age,” says co-founder/lead singer Isaac Slade. “I was turning 30. Pop-rock foursome The Fray from Denver, Colorado, burst onto the world scene with their chart-destroying hit How To Save a Life in 2005, and have been steadily plying their trade through their debut album of the same name followed by a self-titled album in 2009. 2012 marks the release of their third LP, Scars and Stories, which continues in the same vein as their previous albums, with a contrast between optimistic guitar tracks and downbeat piano ballads being prevalent throughout.
One thing Scars and Stories is not short on is melody. The hooks in opening track and lead single Heartbeat are infectious, and the chorus refrain will run laps around your head for days. It invokes comparisons to bands such as Counting Crows (who are an obvious influence), as well as UK counterparts like Coldplay and Keane. The radio potential of Heartbeat combined with second track The Fighter is enormous,...

Justin Bieber is seen making a duet with Jordin Sparks on "No Air" during Kiss 108's Jingle Ball on December 10. The young singer was there to fill in the shoes of Chris Brown who originally sang alongside Jordin on the album version of the song.
In addition to the collaboration, Justin also performed solo, delivering "One Time" and an acoustic version of "Favorite Girl" at the gig taking place in Lowell, Massachusetts. He even attempted to do minor choreography with his broken foot. As for Jordin, she sang "Walking on Snow" and "Battlefield" during her solo sets.
Aside from Justin Bieber and Jordin Sparks, other musical guests of the evening were Sean Kingston, Boys Like Girls and Jay Sean. Closing the Christmas show, meanwhile, were Isaac Slade-fronted band The Fray.

A music video in support of The Fray's single called "Never Say Never" has been released. Directed by Ace Norton, it follows the band's frontman Isaac Slade when he walks through a chaotic town where people run and scream in fright.
Police are seen everywhere, trying to figure out what is going on when something, which is supposed to be a bomb, hits the ground, causing huge blast and fire all over the place. Nearing the end of the video, Isaac runs into a girl he knows. While they are sitting on the hood of a car, another explosion comes and they are all gone.
"Never Say Never" is the second single taken from The Fray's sophomore record "The Fray". Although the track is yet to be released, it has already charted at number 103 on Billboard Hot 100 and at number 87 on U.K. Singles charts.

After a version with "Lost" season 5 attached to it, The Fray release a music video for "You Found Me" that is solely theirs. The song is the first single lifted from their upcoming self-titled album which is due February 3.
The video was shot with Josh Forbes as the director, and premiered on Tuesday, December 9 on VH1. If the one with "Lost" promo captures them singing the song live in the studio, this one shows them in graphic scenes including that in a train.
Speaking of the song, frontman Isaac Slade said, "You Found Me is a tough song for me. Its about the disappointment, the heart ache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you're let down, sometimes you're the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on."

Debuted November 20 during the airing of "Grey's Anatomy" is the promo video of "Lost" that features the new single from The Fray. The video that is produced by ABC and Epic Records combines exclusive scenes from the upcoming fifth season of the drama thriller series plus the band's live performance footage on "You Found Me".
Rooting from their successful debut album "How to Save a Life" (2005), The Fray will drop their self-titled sophomore effort on February 3, 2009 with "You Found Me" as the lead single. "The record definitely has some isolation and loneliness rolled into the fabric of the sound and lyrics," frontman Isaac Slade explains. "We'd been gone from our family and friends for more time than we'd been home. You start to lose sight of priorities and lose sight of balance and you don't really have the luxury of a routine. When that happens, naturally it comes out in the music.
