Hilarie Burton Morgan (The Walking Dead) returns to host season two of SundanceTV, AMC+ and Sundance Now’s True Crime Story: It Couldn’t Happen Here. The six-episode second season premieres on April 18, 2024 with an episode that explores the murder of a teenage girl in Benton, Missouri.
Additional season two episodes of the documentary series air on Wednesdays at 10pm Et/Pt.
“Fighting injustice in our country is a long and arduous process, and unfortunately, the resources to do so are oftentimes out of reach for our most vulnerable communities,” said Burton Morgan. “As we head into this new season of It Couldn’t Happen Here, we are seeing growing momentum in the progress of our past cases – forensic testing, new hearings, wrongful imprisonment compensation, new witnesses coming forward – and it only solidifies our team’s desire to tell these stories with empathy and urgency.”

Connecticut is set to declare Sunday, April 23, 2023 as “Little Richard Day” in honor of the late performer’s “incomparable contributions to the history of music in America.” And no, the rock n’ roll icon doesn’t hail from the Nutmeg state. He was born in Georgia and lived in California, Tennessee and other ports of call until his death in 2020.
Rather, Gov. Ned Lamont is issuing the proclamation in recognition of the release this month of “Little Richard: I Am Everything” and Connecticut’s many ties to the production.
The film, which Magnolia bought out of the Sundance Film Festival, will premiere at the Bedford Playhouse, which is hosted by the Greenwich International Film Festival on April 23. It was produced by Greenwich International Film Festival board member Robert Friedman and produced and directed by Lisa Cortés, a Connecticut native and an alumna of Yale University.

Beginning with the thesis statement “does anything really last,” Ian Chaney’s obsessive inquiry The Arc of Oblivion wonders if the act of archiving is really a folly. This leads to exploring natural methods of archiving around us, from limestone layers to synthesizing digital data into DNA. Chaney starts with a problem facing indie filmmakers and obsessive autobiographers: hard drives and digital video fail easily. Although not explored by Chaney, master filmmakers like Martin Scorsese insist on making physical 35mm prints of films they shot digitally and storing them in salt mines rather than on corruptible servers or digital physical media.
A sweeping, often playful odyssey, The Arc of Oblivion seeks out expert help in exploring the nature of archiving, including the gatekeepers who decide what is important to keep record of. Haunted by the spirit of lost footage he filmed one evening while on his parents’ farm––while he...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to “Little Richard: I Am Everything” from CNN Films following its premiere on Thursday at the Sundance Film Festival.

“Little Richard is the true king of rock and roll, the alpha and omega of wild, rhythm-based music,” said Magnolia Pictures President Eamonn Bowles. “Lisa Cortés does the legend proud, getting the true story that celebrates this icon who shook the culture in so many ways.”

Gangster Squad helmer Ruben Fleischer has been tapped to direct the story of Leo Sharp, the Indiana man who this year was caught running drugs for Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and was sent to the slammer at age 90. An award-winning horticulturist and decorated WWII veteran known for his prized day lilies, Sharp was busted by the feds in 2011 while hauling $3 million in cocaine down the Michigan interstate in his Lincoln pickup truck. He had been one of the cartel’s most prolific drug couriers.
Imperative Entertainment acquired rights to Sam Dolnick’s Nyt Magazine article on Sharp, “The Sinaloa Cartel’s 90-Year-Old Drug Mule.” They’re looking for a writer to tell the story of how the ex-war hero was tracked down by DEA agents who only had the nickname Tata, or Grandfather, to work with. Sharp’s lawyers convinced a jury his dementia sent him on the wrong path and he got three years.

Exclusive: As The New Republic turns 100 years old, Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have made a pre-emptive acquisition of “The Year Of The Pigskin,” a just-published feature by Christopher Beam about the unlikely success of the Chongqing Dockers, one of the first teams in the very first American football league to form in China. The catalyst was a 26-year-old American, the son of police detectives whose pro football dreams were dashed after a shoulder injury incurred while he was a star player at the University of Michigan. He became the team’s coach and star player. The feature is a template for a Bad News Bears-like film that will be shot in China, as the Dockers and its players with names like Fat Baby, Bobo, and Weezy get molded from undisciplined players afraid to hit one another into a group of warriors that battled for the championship against archrival Shanghai Warriors.

Exclusive: The new operation’s called Bungalow Media + Entertainment and it aims to build bridges between content creators and marketers looking for creative ways to work together in TV, film, live entertainment, and digital media. “A lot of people talk about multiple platforms, but it’s very difficult to produce a brand or show if you’re in a traditional entertainment company,” Robert Friedman tells me. He has credibility and extensive connections in media and marketing after serving as a top exec at @radicalMedia, Classic Media, AOL, New Line Cinema, and the original development team at MTV. He’ll be joined by Todd Hoffman — a former ICM Partners agent who earlier this week unveiled his management/production company Storied Media Group. Hoffman will be a partner at Bungalow and run its West Coast operations as he continues to represent franchises including The New York Times, 60 Minutes, and New York magazine...
