If you’re a fan of the comic book-inspired TV show The Cape, don’t despair that it was cancelled. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is at least releasing all the series’ episodes on DVD on July 5.
The Cape stars David Lyons (TV’s E.R.) as an honest cop who’s framed for murder. After he’s in an accident and presumed dead, he goes undercover and becomes The Cape, his son’s favorite comic book superhero, to take down the bad guys, even if it means leaving behind his wife (Jennifer Ferrin of TV’s Life On Mars) and son (Ryan Wynott of TV’s FlashForward). Lyons joins Summer Glau (Serenity) and a ragtag team of thieves, including Keith David (Death at a Funeral), to fight the bigger criminals, such as Vinnie Jones (Snatch).

You'd think NBC would want to stay away from the superhero genre after the demise of Heroes. Tim Kring's series inspired by comics fizzled just as quickly as its meteoric rise to popularity, ultimately crumbling under the weight of its own ambition. The network's latest venture in the genre, The Cape, makes an attempt to be more realistic, set in a world where no one has superhuman abilities. It's a cue undeniably taken from Christopher Nolan's Batman films, except this show features stories and situations even more outrageous than Heroes. Series creator Tom Wheeler not only appears to have cribbed elements from DC's Batman comics, but other properties like Marvel's X-men, Daredevil and just about anything they can think of. It's bad enough that the premise isn't even remotely interesting, but the show's hero and the lead actor who plays him fail to inspire or even hold interest.

The peacock network has decided to cut their season order of The Cape from 13 to 10 episodes. Production of the TV series will shut down this week, the latest sign that the show will be cancelled.
The Cape follows Vince Faraday (David Lyons), an honest cop who finds himself framed for a series of murders and presumed dead. Fueled by a desire to reunite with his family (Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott) and to battle the criminal forces that have overtaken their home city, Vince becomes "The Cape" -- a vigilante and his son's favorite comic book superhero. Others in the cast include James Frain, Keith David, Summer Glau, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, and Vinnie Jones.

Earlier this month, the peacock network debuted The Cape, a new superhero action TV show. Interestingly, they've put it in one of Heroes' old timeslots. Will The Cape last as long as the Tim Kring series or will it be quickly cancelled instead?

Vince is then forced into hiding, leaving his wife Dana (Jennifer Ferrin) and son Trip (Ryan Wynott) behind. In a bid to pick up the residual superhero slack left by the unfortunately long-running “Heroes,” NBC has unveiled their latest foray into the comic book world: The Cape. Although parallels with their previous super drama are inevitable, the network has taken things in a different direction with their latest outing — superpowers are out, and masked vigilantes, circus folk and mystical capes are, apparently, in.

A risky idea, badly handled. The Cape is effectively NBC’s replacement for Heroes, but it’s an altogether more retro and cheesy approach to the superhero genre — its inspirations drawn from ’60s-era Batman and The Greatest American Hero. If you’re looking for a TV show that pushes the envelope or embraces the post-Batman Begins predilection for post-modern realism in the comic-book genre, you’ll be sorely disappointed. The Cape is wantonly preposterous and derivative, but that doesn’t have to be a barrier to a great hour’s entertainment. Unfortunately, The Cape’s also blundering, stupid, and poorly written.

It should come to no one’s surprise that The Cape doesn’t break new ground nor does it come off as some clever nod to the dozen or so urban vigilante archetypes that have been clearly borrowed, most notably Batman. The Cape is the latest steaming pile of dog crap by network television to capitalize on the comic book culture. Do we really look that desperate for a television show? Between The Cape, Smallville and No Ordinary Family, network super heroes look like they’ve been through a spay shop. All of them toe the line of being not so dark, not so light, and trying to appeal to the most general of audiences.

It's easy to see why Hollywood loves a good superhero story. The genre has become so popular over the past couple of years, it's no wonder why everyone is in such a rush to strike while the iron is hot and cash in on the trend. While the story in a superhero movie like The Dark Knight is a great one, providing the essential themes of good versus evil and the power of one man, etc., The Cape tries to follow that same method for success.

As a rule, I believe that any new show with a premise or cast that interests me enough to watch the premiere deserves the "Three Episode Chance". Premieres are often hampered by exposition and character intros. Ideally, these are done in such a way that viewers Want to know what happens. In more realistic terms, many shows don’t get to the meat of their writing until the second or third episodes. That’s when relationships flesh out, themes surface, story arcs gain momentum. Writers need to find their rhythm and actors need to figure out their characters. All this takes time.
Unfortunately, the world of television doesn’t often give shows a lot of time. And NBC’s The Cape might’ve missed the starter’s pistol completely Sunday night And used up two of its three chances. The two-hour premiere ("Pilot"/"Tarot") exhibited a slick style and clever...

NBC will try to pull one last genre trick out of its bag of tricks Sunday with the premiere of "The Cape" at 9 p.m. Et. A cop is framed for a crime he didn't commit, and corrupt officers leave him for dead once he's caught. Using the fact that others think he's dead, Vince Faraday (David Lyons) uses a little help from a circus ringleader to take on some special abilities as well as the persona of his son's (Ryan Wynott) favorite superhero to become a vigilante in the fictional town of Palm City. It's a different take on a comic book-style character, but one it seems many reviewers are not too impressed by. "The most irritating thing about today's superheroes is how seriously they take themselves," said Washington Post reviewer Hank Stuever, who called "The Cape" a "stupid geek-stinker." ...

When Zap2it visited the set of "The Cape" in December to talk with creator Tom Wheeler, he used the word "pulp" several times in describing the show's origins. The show, which premieres Sunday (Jan. 9), is proudly old-school in its depiction of a comic book-inspired hero, and Wheeler cites several vintage heroes among its inspirations.
"I think about characters like the Spirit, the Shadow, Green Hornet, the earliest, purple-gloves Batman -- the more two-fisted kind of [character]," Wheeler says. "I wouldn't characterize him as a Marvel-type hero or even a DC hero. It's the simple symbolism of it, and kind of the iconic feeling of the cape, and drawing out crime stories that feel more old-school. ... It feels sort of evocative of a different age."
Wheeler (who previously created ABC's 2005 miniseries "Empire") is a man who knows his comics. Asked about his early and current favorites, he rattles off a list of titles ("Growing up,...

NBC is going all out for its new series The Cape, and the lengths they are going to alone is making me hope the series takes off. Why? Because the varied and targeted effort makes me hope that the show will continue to take advantage of the multi-platform possibilities, and turn the show into something rather unique. Well, and the show looks pretty interesting.
Already with a loaded App for the show (at iTunes here), a website with quite a lot of content and a comic theme, and a Submit Your Villain contest going on, NBC is turning things up for this one. The iPad version of the App even gave folks a chance to catch the first hour of Sunday's two-hour premiere early.

Chicago – NBC never learns. After not just countless rip-offs but “Heroes” itself tanked, why would they try to go back to a clearly-drained well for another comic book TV series like “The Cape”? If shows like “The Event” and “No Ordinary Family” are struggling to find an audience, is there anyone who really thinks they’ve been waiting for this lackluster superhero saga to return to network genre programming? Until the big five present something truly original, not merely a shadow of what they have done better before, fans are going to keep jumping off this sinking ship and no superhero will stop them.

David Lyons didn't read comic books as a kid. He's gained an appreciation for them lately, though -- which is good, since he's playing a comics-inspired character on "The Cape."
"Since I've started this and started to do research into the different genres and heroic archetypes and the mythology behind it, I realized it's an incredible world in terms of complexity and color," Lyons tells Zap2it. "As a kid, I just thought it was pictures. But I realize now how much heart and soul are in these comics."
That's also what drew him to "The Cape," which premieres at 9 p.m. Et Sunday (Jan. 9) on NBC. His character, Vince Faraday, is a cop who's framed for murder and goes underground when he's presumed killed. One of the shows I am looking the most forward to this new year is NBC's The Cape. Here is some information and a preview of the series premiere.
The story revolves around a cop that is framed for a cime he did not commit and is forced into hiding while attempting to clear his name. The show takes place in the fictional Palm City. To disguise himself from the authorities the cop takes on the the persona of his sons favorite comic book hero The Cape and sets out to fight evil.
With any show like this there is a chance that it will not be a success, but the looks of the trailers and clips I have seen look promising. I love the casting of James Frain (True Blood) and Summer Glau (Firefly) which will have their fans hopefully supporting it.

If you love comic books, you’ll love these stylized villains from NBC’s new superhero drama, The Cape. James Frain (Tron: Legacy, True Blood) and Vinnie Jones (Wanted Dead, Chuck) play two of the show’s regular big bads, named Chess and Scales respectively. What’s behind the stylized portraits of these villains? What makes them tick?
Frain (above) broke the show down to its basic elements:
“It’s a superhero show and I play the supervillain. It’s not that big a stretch. No one has any real powers. It’s all about cunning and skill. It’s very serious in its intent. But it’s also light in the way it’s played. It is closer to Batman in that the people don’t have powers.”
[Above: Vinnie Jones]
Vinnie explained his character’s strategic plan for domination:

NBC announced its midseason schedule Monday (Nov. 15), and Monday night it already had promos ready to go for one of its new series, "The Cape."
The show is about a cop (David Lyons of "ER") who's framed for murder, then presumed dead in a shootout, after which he goes underground and takes on the persona of The Cape, his son's favorite comic-book hero. He joins forces with a young woman (Summer Glau, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") to try to wrest control from the corrupt forces that run his city.
You might not get all that from the 30-second promo NBC is running on the air, which is more about style and mood than storytelling. But NBC also has a full-length trailer online that showcases the rest of the cast -- which includes Keith David, Jennifer Ferrin, Dorian Missick, James Frain, Martin Klebba, Vinnie Jones and Ryan Wynott -- and...

A couple weeks ago, ABC officially cancelled their freshman TV show, FlashForward. Though it got off to a good start in the fall, the show's ratings declined fairly steadily throughout the season. Like many ongoing serials that are end before their time, the last episode of FlashForward left many questions unanswered.
In the FlashForward series, the world's population passes out unexpectedly for 137 seconds and has a vision of a future date. The series features a large ensemble cast that includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Brian F. O'Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, Christine Woods, Genevieve Cortese, Dominic Monaghan, Gabrielle Union, Lee Thompson Young, Ryan Wynott, Barry Shabaka Henley, and Lennon Wynn.

Fans of ABC’s “FlashForward” will be staging organized blackouts in major cities around the world on June 10th in hopes of seeing a future for the canceled show. The blackouts will resemble the fictional global blackout seen in the freshman drama where people collectively lost consciousness and saw a glimpse of their future lives.
The effort is organized by “Save FlashForward” with this mission statement:
“On October 6, 2009, the whole world blacked out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, at the start of what promised to be ABC’s new hit show, FlashForward. In May, ABC canceled it, but still aired the explosive cliffhanger finale leaving fans begging for more. On June 10th, there will be another blackout, this time to change fate.”
Blackouts will be staged in front of ABC offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and will occur in other major cities including Detroit, Ontario, London, and Dublin, Ireland.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
While the Peacock has struggled in recent years, those were like a cakewalk compared to this past season as the network became a very public punching bag over the debacle of its 10pm Jay Leno show experiment, the Leno/Conan media wars, and ultimately the general failure of its shows which all struggled in the ratings - most visibly its two new medical dramas and the once proud "Heroes".
By the end of the season the only real success stories to talk about were the network's well-regarded but not spectacularly-rated Thursday night comedy block (Community, 30 Rock, Office), and "Chuck" which only just got renewed last season and is proving to be one of the network's...

Ok, so after a strong first season (although that weak first finale should have signaled the rapid coming decline to all involved), NBC's "Heroes" failed to deliver much of anything other than disappointment, but that doesn't mean the superhero drama is doomed to failed in general.
NBC will give it another go -- and try a different angle -- at midseason with "The Cape," a drama about a superhero who doesn't have superpowers. Like Batman. Or Kick-Ass
David Lyons stars as a cop who is framed for murder and then presumed dead. In order to clear his name and get back to his family, he takes on the persona of The Cape, his son's favorite comicbook hero.
Jennifer Ferrin ("Life on Mars"), Ryan Wynott ("FlashForward"), James Frain ("The Tudors"), Keith David ("Death at a Funeral"), Summer Glau ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") and Dorian Missick ("Six Degrees") also star.
