What Happened to Chris Rios in The Rookie?
Image
Quick Links Who Was Chris Rios in The Rookie? How Officer Chris Rios Died in the Line of Duty on The Rookie The Shooting of Chris Rios Uncovered The Rookie's First Dirty Cops How the Death of Officer Rios Changed The Rookie for the Better

When The Rookie premiered in 2018, the titular character was Nathan Fillion's John Nolan, who was at least two decades older than his fellow first-time officers. However, the series quickly became about their training officers, friends, family and Nolan's cadre of fellow rookies. One such rookie was Chris Rios, who was introduced at the end of Season 2. Christopher O'Shea played Rios in two episodes of The Rookie Season 2, "The Q Word" and "The Hunt," the finale that year.

While his appearances were limited, the impact of the character was sizeable. Like most police procedurals on television, The Rookie often overstates the danger and risk faced...

The Exorcist Already Had a Legacy Sequel, and Fans Loved It
Image
Back in 2016, Fox made the decision to pick up The Exorcist TV show. All signs pointed to the project being a disaster since most of the sequels to The Exorcist were mostly disasters at that point (with the exception of the stellar The Exorcist III), and it was dumped on Friday nights, commonly known as "the death slot" during the heyday of network TV. However, despite all of these things working against it, Fox's Exorcist TV series proved to be a compelling continuation of William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty's seminal horror film and a worthy legacy sequel that is much better than most of the movies that tried to tackle this mythology.

Beyond 1973's The Exorcist, which broke box office records and even earned the admiration of the Academy Awards, the franchise has been a mess of devilish proportions. The first attempt to expand on the story came...

Michael McKean, Alan Tudyk, Luke Benward, and Hannah Kasulka in Playing God (2021)
Alan Tudyk & Hannah Kasulka in Con Comedy 'Playing God' Trailer
Michael McKean, Alan Tudyk, Luke Benward, and Hannah Kasulka in Playing God (2021)
"Can't stop now, it's the role of a lifetime." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Playing God, a film from writer / director Scott Brignac. It's debuting in August despite not showing up at any festivals before. A brother & sister con-artist duo find themselves scamming a grieving billionaire by convincing him they can introduce him to God, face-to-face. They recruit their mentor, and together the three of them attempt the biggest con of their lives. The film stars Hannah Kasulka & Luke Benward as the con siblings, also joined by Michael McKean, Jude Demorest, Marc Menchaca, plus Alan Tudyk. This actually looks like a great heist film, might be an undiscovered gem. Especially with the tease when he finally sits down with "God" - yeah this film seems much more clever and grand than I was expecting at first. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Scott Brignac's Playing God,...

Review Round-Up: We Summon The Darkness and Witches In The Woods
Image
While multiplexes may not be opening any time soon, that doesn’t mean genre fans still don’t have other means to take in new horror films these days. Here’s a look at a pair of recent indie movies that I had the chance to check out: We Summon the Darkness from Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and Witches in the Woods by director Jordan Barker.

We Summon the Darkness: As someone who lived through the Satanic Panic of the ’80s and early ’90s, Marc Myers’ ode to heavy metal lifestyles, We Summon the Darkness, was 100 percent my jam. A brutal and surprising bloodbath that managed to subvert any expectations I had going into it, We Summon the Darkness may stumble a bit here and there tonally, but ultimately delivers a wickedly fun time all the same.

The story follows Alexis (Alexandra Daddario) and her two best pals,...

Actress Hannah Kasulka Directs Quirky Short Bird Of Shame
Actress Hannah Kasulka is adding writing and directing to her already growing resume with the release of her first short Bird of Shame, a humorous film depicting the modern and innevitable evolution of what was previously known as "the walk of shame". Shot fast and with a small crew, Bird of Shame is presented in black and white and features no dialogue. Its simplicity feels experimental, like Kasulka is tinkering with the unique vocabulary of cinema to tell even a small story. Or, hey, perhaps as a working actress she's just grown tired of traditional acting through dialog and wants to flex some different skills. Kasulka, whose most recent film Witches in the Woods had a strong premiere at Tad, promises us...

Frightfest 2019: ‘Witches in the Woods’ Review
Stars: Hannah Kasulka, Alexander De Jordy, Sasha Clements, Corbin Bleu, Humberly González, Craig Arnold, Kyle Mac, Sasha Clements, Ian Matthews, James Gilbert, David Lafontaine | Written by Christopher Borrelli | Directed by Jordan Barker

I absolutely love films, in particular, horror films that have scenes that involve a lot of snow. Or, even better, if like Witches In The Woods, have a setting that is entirely snow-covered. Maybe it’s my love of Christmas and movies based around that holiday season or maybe it’s just how beautiful landscapes and nature look when covered with the white stuff. Or maybe it’s because when blood is sprayed or dripped on to snow, it looks really really cool. Whatever it is, I know I am going to enjoy a movie a little bit more if snow is featured heavily.

I do also enjoy films that are based in one, small area and as...

Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
‘The Exorcist’ Canceled By Fox After 2 Seasons
Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
Fox’s well received but low rated horror drama series The Exorcist has been axed after two seasons.

The series, which starred Geena Davis in its first season, started off with a lot of promise. “This show is going to turn heads,” Fox chairman Gary Newman said of The Exorcist to a lot of chuckles (and a few groans) in one of the more memorable lines from the network’s 2016 upfront presentation.

The Exorcist was met with some of the best reviews for a new series that fall, and the acclaim continued in Season 2. But, scheduled on Friday nights, the series adaptation of the classic 1973 movie never got traction. In its most recent second season, it averaged a paltry 0.6 adults 18-49 Live+7 rating.

Putting the horror series on Friday nights was “tough for that show,” Newman told Deadline in March. “We had hoped that we would be able to tap...

Jason Beghe, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, and LaRoyce Hawkins in Chicago P.D. (2014)
With the fall television season kicking into high gear, several returning favorites have undergone noteworthy changes.

Whether it’s major casting shuffles on Once Upon a Time and Grey's Anatomy or unexpected departures on Hawaii Five-0 and Chicago P.D., there’s never a dull moment when it comes to keeping track of the upcoming 2017-18 season.

Et highlights seven returning TV shows that will have a different look and feel this fall.

Chicago P.D. (NBC)

Chicago P.D. lost a big member of their department when Sophia Bush abruptly left the show in May. The show hinted at Bush's departure in the season four cliffhanger finale, when her character, Erin Lindsay, considered taking a job with the FBI in New York -- but the NBC cop drama looked internally for her replacement. Revolution alum Tracy Spiridakos made her Chicago P.D. debut at the end of season four, when her character, a robbery...

Japanese Horror Influenced The Look And Feel Of The Exorcist Season 2
While Fox’s flagship panel and its presentation of Kingsman: The Golden Circle stole headlines left, right, and center, the company also staged a handful of smaller Sdcc showcases for some of its other properties. Case in point: The Exorcist.

Featuring a smattering of cast and crew members, the show’s panel took place yesterday evening, where key creative players like Jeremy Slater and executive producer Sean Crouch solicited questions about what The Exorcist season 2 has in store. Spoilers: if you’re at all familiar with Japanese horror, you may recognize the general aesthetic of the show’s sophomore season.

In fact, by relocating to the Pacific Northwest, it’s clear Fox is toying with an anthology format when it comes to The Exorcist, which may well allow the series to succeed where other film-to-tv adaptations (see: Minority Report, 24: Legacy, Emerald City) have failed. And so, gone are Geena Davis,...

A New Breed Of Horror Takes Shape In This Eerie Poster For The Exorcist Season 2
Out of all the many, many film classics that have received a new lease of life in the form of a spinoff TV series, The Exorcist is arguably one of the few to prove its doubters wrong.

Whereas Minority Report, 24: Legacy, and even Emerald City failed rather spectacularly – all three were yanked off the airwaves after one season a piece – The Exorcist defied the naysayers to become one of the more intriguing horror series on the small screen, and it’s a credit to writer-director Jeremy Slater and the rest of the team that Fox’s creepy drama is able to live up to those lofty expectations that come hand-in-hand with any property directly related to William Friedkin’s film classic of ’73.

That means Slater and Co. now have their work cut out if they are to deliver a story that is just as emotionally compelling (and terrifying!) as the first,...

Brianna Hildebrand - Deadpool's Negasonic Teenage Warhead - joins The Exorcist, as it moves onto a private island...

What a wonderful place for an exorcism. The Exorcist season 2 will venture out of Chicago to a private island in the Pacific Northwest. And, in other news, Deadpool's has been cast as one of the female leads.

She will fit into a foster home storyline, on the island. One of the kids in the home is a demon who catches the attention of roving exorcists Tomas Ortega and Marcus Keane. Hildebrand will play Verity, a teen about to turn 18, who's on her way out of the house.

Hildebrand recently starred in Kerem Sanga’s First Girl I Loved, and will reprise her role as Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the upcoming Deadpool 2. She will next be seen in Tragedy Girls, an independent dark comedy.

Fox Will Summon The Exorcist Back Onto The Small Screen This September
Though The Gifted may be the highest-profile series premiere lining Fox’s fall 2017-2018 slate – Bryan Singer and Matt Nix’s X-Men family drama has been booked in for early October – the network still has plenty of fan-favorite shows returning for another crack of the whip. Case in point: The Exorcist.

Whereas a small number of movie-to-tv adaptations bombed spectacularly back in 2016 – namely Minority Report and the recently-canned 24: Legacy – Fox’s horror anthology series struck a chord with audiences and even managed to maintain a relatively healthy threshold of two million viewers per episode. Even after all these years, it turns out there’s still an appetite for William Friedkin’s film classic of ’73.

And so, to strike while the iron was hot, Fox quickly ordered a second season of The Exorcist, which is now expected to loom over the small screen on Friday, September 29th. As previously reported, the Rance family won’t be returning, meaning that Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulka, Brianne Howey, and Alan Ruck have parted ways with the series – for now, at least.

Gone but not forgotten? According to series creator Jeremy Slater, there’s still a small chance that the Rances will make an appearance somewhere down the line.

“A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession,” he shared with us ahead of the renewal.

“Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again.

Ready for another season of supernatural thrills and spills? The Exorcist anthology series returns via Fox on Friday, September 29th, at 9:00-10:00 pm Et/Pt. The Gifted, on the other hand, begins its mutant family saga on Monday, October 2nd.

The Exorcist Is Returning For Another Season, But Geena Davis Isn’t
Fox had an unexpected hit on their hands with the first season of The Exorcist, picking up a smattering of positive critical notices and decent ratings. So, it’s no surprise that they renewed it for a second season. The show is a loose sequel to the 1973 William Friedkin movie classic, following a trio of Exorcist priests, with the first season exploring what happened to formerly possessed puker Regan MacNeil over the last forty or so years.

In an eye-catching bit of casting, Geena Davis was brought on board as MacNeil and was generally agreed to be one of the best things in the series. That makes it a little disappointing then that she’s confirmed that she’s departing the show. Rather than re-cast the role, executive producer and director Jeremy Slater has simply decided to focus the second season narrative elsewhere.

This means, apparently, not just jettisoning Davis’ character,...

Update on the Cast for Season 2 of Fox’s The Exorcist TV Series
Back in May, fans of Fox's The Exorcist TV series rejoiced when the network announced that the series would be returning for a second season, but according to the latest casting details, there will be some big changes in the show moving forward.

According to TVLine, while Alfonso Herrera, Kurt Egyiawan and Ben Daniels—who all play priests on the series—will return as series regulars in season 2 of The Exorcist, the actors who played the members of the Rance family—Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Hannah Kasulka and Brianne Howey—will not be coming back in a series regular capacity, as a different exorcism is expected to take the spotlight this time around.

A family plagued by demonic possession, the Rances were the primary focus of the priests in season 1, but season 2 will explore "a new storyline," as showrunner Jeremy Slater mentioned to Deadline in late 2016, adding that it "doesn...

The Exorcist Season 2 Cast Shakeup: Who's In? Who's Out?
Ben Daniels in The Exorcist (2016)
This is bound to turn a few heads (that lede never gets old!).

Roughly a month after The Exorcist‘s surprise renewal, Fox has put the finishing touches on the official Season 2 cast list — and there are a few notable (if not entirely unexpected) omissions.

Related2017 Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Cancelled? What’s on the Bubble?

The priestly trio of Alfonso Herrera, Kurt Egyiawan and Ben Daniels will all be back as series regulars, but they will be presiding over a new possession case. As a result, Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, Hannah Kasulka and Brianne Howey...

Fox Renews The Exorcist For a Third Season!
I thought the first season of The Exorcist series was great! There were some really cool little twists and turns that I didn't see coming. As a fan of the series, I'm excited to report that Fox has renewed it for a second season!

The series is based on the classic 1973 horror film. It's also basically a continuation of the film as Gena Davis plays an older version of the girl Regan, who was the one possessed in the original movie. I enjoyed the way Season 2 ended and I can't wait to see what the creative team has in store for Season 2.

According to Fox, this new season will open up “a new chapter of the iconic franchise." There are no story details for the upcoming season, but I'm sure it will include some more intriguing and dark twists and turns.

Davis stars alongside Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Hannah Kasulka,...

Fox’s ‘Exorcist’ series is deeply creepy (Season 1 open thread)
At the behest of my friend and colleague Nikki Baughan, I just finished Season 1 of Fox’s TV series The Exorcist. And I can highly recommend it. Inspired by the William Peter Blatty novel (which was the basis for the 1973 film), it is incredibly unnerving in ways that filmed horror often fails to achieve, partly because it has a lot more time — we get 10 45-minute episodes here — to create an inching envelopment by evil of the Rance family of Chicago. There are some fantastic performances here — particular by Geena Davis as the mom worried that her teenaged daughter is possessed by a demon and Ben Daniels as the badass exorcist — and a few sneaky feminist touches, such as the cloistered nuns who perform a loving sort of exorcism that’s more about the warm embrace of Christ compelling evil spirits to leave mere mortals alone than violence and shouting to drive them out.

Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
‘The Exorcist’ Review: Fox Hopes One Big Twist Will Compel You to Return in Slow-Burn Premiere (Spoilers)
Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
Adapting “The Exorcist” for television is a challenging prospect. Doing it for broadcast television, with its strict FCC rules on language and slightly softer guidelines on violence, seems damn near impossible.

With that in mind, creator Jeremy Slater’s Fox pilot seems to have done a lot right: stringing out the tension over the course of an hour, limiting the jump scares to a minimum and avoiding overloading the audience with gross-out gags akin to the green vomit made famous by the film. The premiere even works to establish characters before turning them into head-spinning demons — in fact, it even implies there won’t be any head-spinning at all.

Though the first hour dutifully pays homage to the scariest movie of all time — especially in its studiously lit opening moments — and even branches out with key changes meant to elongate the story, the pilot fails to pay off in one...

The Exorcist Review – Fox Offers Fall’s Most Surprising Show
Leave it to the crazy, mixed-up world of today’s television efforts to give us a horror show based on a 40+-year-old movie to give us one the season’s best attempts. I mean, if you like horror.

The main thing to know going in is that there is only a loose connection to the film and/or novel. Events are reminiscent of the circumstances in those creations, but the show branches out on the idea to create its own telling.

The story focuses on Father Tomas Ortega (Alfonso Herrera), Father Marcus Keane (Ben Daniels), and their connection to the Rance family. Father Tomas is a small part of a new hope for the church, leading a small-ish parish in the suburbs of Chicago, he’s a new breed of progressive, young priest. Perhaps slightly on the naive side, he is nevertheless a hopeful and charismatic leader. Father Marcus, as counterpoint,...

The Exorcist Season 1 Review
One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

The path of the TV adaptation of The Exorcist is fraught with peril, and not just because of demons. The small screen is currently awash in horror and horror adaptations. American Horror Story leads the pack, of course, but there’s also the Scream series, Scream Queens, Bates Motel, the much-binged Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, The Strain…need I go on?

The Exorcist has the unenviable challenge of acknowledging its origins while simultaneously providing enough scares and plot alterations to hold the attention of an audience currently living in the new heyday of horror. While some shows have succeeded in transcending their big screen origins (Bates Motel), others have not (the short-lived Omen spinoff Damien). So the question is: does The Exorcist succeed?

The answer is…sort of.

The Exorcist updates William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel and William Friedkin’s iconic 1973 film,...
