Friends Call Me Albert Written by Zachary Desmond Directed by Ryan Emmons Presented by No. 11 Productions at Access Theater, NYC August 23-September 10, 2017
The same day that we saw Friends Call Me Albert, Zachary Desmond's world premiere "bio-epic" of Albert Einstein, Gizmodo headlined a post about a new paper arguing that quantum entanglement is an inevitable feature of any fundamental physical theory, "Scientists Finally Prove Strange Quantum Physics Idea Einstein Hated." While the Gizmodo piece itself describes entanglement as "what allows particles that have once interacted to share a connection regardless of the separation between them," it also quotes Einstein's derisive description of it as "'spooky action at a distance.'" A century after his general theory of relativity was published and more than half a century after his death, Einstein remains, at least in the popular imagination, the central point of reference for modern physics. Desmond's play too takes this towering figure as its center,...

Who needs boys when you have your best girlfriend to cheer you up? After reportedly calling it quits with fellow English star Chris Clark, Little Mix's Jesy Nelson hit the beach in Miami on Thursday with her bandmate Perrie Edwards. The two enjoyed some fun in the sun as they walked around sipping on drinks and holding hands. Aside from showing off their sweet friendship, they also flaunted their incredible figures as they strolled through the sand wearing matching Calvin Klein tops and cutoff shorts. No telling whether another jam-worthy breakup track like "Shout Out to My Ex" will come out of Jesy's new relationship status, but we are certainly loving the girls' incredible bond. Rocks In My Pockets will screen Tuesday, September 29 at 7pm at Emerson Auditorium in the Institute for Health Education at St. Luke’s Hospital
In the new animated gem Rocks In My Pockets, Latvian-born artist and filmmaker Signe Baumane tells five fantastical tales based on the courageous women in her family and their battles with madness. With boundless imagination and a twisted sense of humor, she has created daring stories of art, romance, marriage, nature, business, and Eastern European upheaval-all in the fight for her own sanity. Employing a unique, beautifully textured combination of papier-mâché stop-motion and classic hand-drawn animation (with inspiration from Jan Svankmajer and Bill Plympton), Baumane has produced a poignant and often hilarious tale of mystery, mental health, redemption and survival.
The critics are praising Rocks In My Pockets

Next month, we will be celebrating our anniversary by teaming up with our friends at Grindhouse Releasing to present Trailer Apocalypse, which features almost 2 hours of horror & exploitation film trailers all on 35mm! However, I thought it would be nice to sit in front of the computer and reminisce about how far the program has come.
In The Beginning…
Up until 2002, I worked for the Wehrenberg Theatres chain from my start in 1999 as a concessionist and worked my way to a projectionist. Finally, I was an Assistant Manager/Projectionist at the Eureka 6 Cine. When I got my job with the current company I work for, I quit the theater. I’ll admit, quitting felt like a little piece of me was missing. I was no longer “contributing” to my love of film. I always wanted to be involved again, but didn’t really know what to do. A Dungeon Master’S Guide To Life screens Wednesday, July 16th at 9:30pm at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd.) as part of The St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase
A Dungeon Master’S Guide To Life is an interesting, locally-made film directed by Chris Bruemmer that humorously focuses on a group of men and women playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Much of the film takes place in a basement with humorous conversations and conflicts between the players, while occasionally interjecting semi-documentary moments. It’s an amateur film, but at the same time, I believe that it’s also sweet and funny. While it’s low budget, A Dungeon Master’S Guide To Life is intelligent enough to contain at least two montages which show certain relationships within the larger group. Quite often the jokes are nicely imbedded within the dialogue.
Overall, I was impressed with A Dungeon Master’S Guide To Life.

Elegy To Connie screens Sunday, July 13th at 2:30pm at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd.) as part of The St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase
Charles Lee “Cookie” Thornton lived in the predominately black Meachum Park section of Kirkwood. On February 7, 2008 he wrote a note that promised, “The truth will win out in the end”, then drove to Kirkwood City Hall with a gun. Outside, he shot and killed Kirkwood Police Sgt. Bill Biggs and took his gun. Inside the council chamber, he killed Officer Tom Ballman, four city officials, and critically wounded the mayor, who would die of his injuries a few months later. One of those murdered was Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Connie Karr and the new documentary Elegy To Connie is a tribute to her. The touching and unusual film employs nothing but stop-motion animation to address the events leading up to and following the Kirkwood City Council shooting.

After the hard-fought days of Training Camp, after the hard fought divisional battles, after battling their way through the playoff gauntlet, only two teams remain. Fans of the underdogs were disappointed as the two teams expected to win their conferences did just that, with the Seahawks and Broncos punching their tickets to Super Bowl Xlviii on Sunday. Both teams came into the postseason as the number one overall team in their conference, so we should expect nothing less than this game being one for the ages. Here’s how the position battle between both teams will break down:

Mohamed Bangura has returned to Lennoxtown Training Centre following his 1 year loan trip at Elfsborg, and the man from Sierra Leone has quite a bit to answer for. I’ll try not to criticise Mo too harshly, he plays for our green and white Hoops after all and we Celtic fans don’t like to put our own players down. However, it’s fair to say he’s been one of our more controversial signings. Despite Lennon giving Bangura his full backing recently, are the fans going to welcome him back as easily?
It’s been just over 20 months since Bangura last played for Celtic (in a 1-0 win over St Johnstone, 3rd May 2012) due to his loan stints over in Sweden, but he has not exactly proven much of the hype that surrounded him as he became a Celtic player back in...

I’m super-excited about this year’s Q-Fest….and I’m not even gay!
There are a pair of must-see gay-themed films making their St. Louis debuts; I Am Divine, a documentary about the late crossdresser and John Waters frequent star, and James Franco’s Interior Leather Bar, a high-concept recreation of scenes that were cut from William Friedkin’s notorious 1980 gay serial killer movie Cruising. Divine was one of the biggest, most outrageous, and proudly different gay cultural icons the world has known and the new documentary about the performer I Am Divine plays at Q-fest this Friday night at 7pm. A high (or low) point in Divine’s career was John Waters 1972’s masterpiece Pink Flamingos where he/she competes for the title of “filthiest person alive” by eating fresh dog poop. With antics like that, it’s no surprise that the emerging punk scene adopted his visage on t-shirts.

There are few things in this world more warm and cozy than digging into a humanistic John Ford picture. Few things more downright entertaining. I’m inclined to call Ford my favorite filmmaker of all time, if I felt it necessary to make such distinctions. Steamboat Round the Bend was to be, for all intents and purposes, a minor Ford experience for me; a film one watches when they’ve run out of the “better” Ford and wanna see what else he made in between and around Stagecoach and The Searchers. Steamboat Round the Bend came four years prior to Stagecoach – the film inevitably referred to as more or less the starting point of Ford’s lucrative Western stint and, more egregious and wrongheadedly, when he started to get “good”. Not only had he made good films before Stagecoach, he’d made better films Than Stagecoach before Stagecoach. He’d...

Review by Barbara SnitzerIt took a little time for me to warm up to this very funny, enjoyable Italian comedy. Not only does Italian star Ficarra (Salvo) look a lot like Roberto Benigni, but he has the same broad, manic comic energy that I personally don’t find funny at all. This looked like a comedy, but I wasn’t expecting funny.
The creative director of the St. Louis International Film Festival, Chris Clark, who knows that I’m Le Movie Snob, assured me this movie was funny. Knowing his taste, and knowing that he knows mine, I feel guilty for admitting my doubt. Ti prego di perdonarmi.
Like the average American who doesn’t have the instinct for when pasta is al dente, it soon reached the perfect temperature.
Yes, it’s a broad comedy, with contrived romantic entanglements. But the situations and dialogue are laugh-out-loud hysterical. Pay special...

Falkinder: ‘Blind’
Media agencies are “simply ticking out-of-date demographic boxes on their planning programs and turning a blind eye to niche opportunities” a new sales house has claimed.
The claim came from Jake Falkinder, head of strategy at the newly formed Misfit Media.
The sales operation, based on the Gold Coast, will represent website shockmansion.com, skateboarding platform skateboard.com.au and digital surf magazine 18seconds.com.au, targetting an under 35 male audience.
In a statement, Misfit Media attacked “increasing neglect by media planners to properly utilise popular niche websites as suitable advertising platforms for their clients”.
Falkinder claimed that “time reasons, or perhaps simply a lack of visibility” of certain sites were making agencies and advertisers overlook relvant opportunities. He said: “These sites are attracting a large majority of 18 to 35 year old Australian guys, so the advertisers who are wanting to target these guys end up missing their target.

Tony Scott, one of Hollywood’s most marginalized auteurs and easily one of the most exciting presences in that market, died recently of suicide. But this particular obituary will be less a mourning and more a celebration of his artistry. This artistry sharply divided critics and audiences alike, more specifically in the last 10 years of his career where his editing became swifter, his colors more extreme and his camerawork more hectic and subjective.
Anthony D. L. Scott was born in North Shields, Northumberland, England in 1944. Seven years the junior of more renowned director brother, Ridley, he attended the Royal College of Art in London, earning his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1972 with every intention to become a painter. Tempted by his brother, he soon entered the world of TV and film. His early TV work earned him accolades, but his first feature film did not. The Hunger was received poorly,...

I’ve written about LeRoy’s work before, a director quickly becoming a favorite of his era, but that was a comedy, albeit one with sharp teeth and tragic implications. Five Star Final is unbearably tense melodrama more in the vein of the also exceptional Two Seconds. Superficially concerned with the actions of a newspaper and its working parts as they dig up an old murder story to rejuvenate circulation numbers, like Hard to Handle, it winds up being a...

It’s safe to say that most films that have tackled The Great Depression did so in a melancholy fashion; befitting the mood of the nation and “properly” dignifying the experiences of those who suffered through it, and even those who never lived to see the economy recover. It was, after all, the most devastating economic depression in the whole of the 20th century. Its effects were felt worldwide, with unemployment reaching astronomic heights and economies contracting seemingly beyond repair. The Us alone saw unemployment skyrocket to 25%, which wasn’t even the worst recorded during the depression, and crop prices fall as much as 60%, and being as how this was the 30s, cash crops were a major sector of the Us economy. This information, in its own way, finds itself weaved into the narrative of Hard to Handle, Mervyn LeRoy’s tragi-satire filmed during the height of the depression. During this period,...

Though Kenji Mizoguchi has covered the plight of geisha throughout most, if not all, of his oeuvre, I don’t think I’ve seen it done in as blunt a fashion as is done here. The fit of frustration that beckoned a screamed “why” at the end of Sisters of a Gion certainly precedes and at least matches much of the directness on display here, but that scream was like a cry for help after a long road of despair. An existential query with an exclamation point to the gods who would allow such a profession to be so utterly necessary for so many women. Mizoguchi, more than just about any director, toyed with the Madonna/Whore Complex and complicated the dichotomous view of female sexuality so many men have. The approach is relatively simple in theory: make the women full, flawed characters that remain sympathetic in spite of their...

In April, Drew Goddard, in his directorial debut, coming out of some renown for his work with Joss Whedon, released a very entertaining horror satire called The Cabin in the Woods. It was hailed as unique, if nothing else. Widely praised by horror nerds and general audiences and critics alike. I hadn’t seen Beetlejuice in several years before tonight. It was a favorite of mine as a kid, and I figured it was coming about that time to revisit it and see if it retained any of its charm in my more mature and cynical age. The good news is that it does, and the bad news for the Goddard film is that Beetlejuice handled the material better, and 24 years prior. I’d grown out of any adolescent preoccupation with Tim Burton’s self-consciously goth throwback oeuvre and long moved on, but if this recent viewing is any indication,...

We discuss his debut feature Our Daily Bread and follow that up with two of his other features, In Two Minds and The Gaze.
Mani Kaul passed away in July of last year and this is our little attempt at examining how his work stands apart not just from Bollywood and other Indian cinema but also marks him as a unique distinct filmmaker overall.

A slasher film done in the faux documentary style? Sure, it was done with Behind the Mask , but some indie filmmakers are about to tackle the format with RedFall , from Chris O'Brocki and M.T. Smith. Shooting is expected to begin soon in Maryland. RedFall follows a group of young college students making a documentary for their film school class about the bizarre and unexplained dead bodies that keep popping up in their neighboring county. After traveling to the nearby country to capture their footage, they accidentally film a mysterious man dumping a body in the woods. Scared, the group must decide quickly what to do with their footage. Unfortunately, before they can do anything, this mysterious man shows up to silence them. O.Brocki will star with Chris Clark, Jemma...
