The warmly-received Venice premiere will screen at Sundance later this week and Sc Films will present it to buyers at the Efm in Berlin later this month.
The cinematic essay explores the nuances of Friedkin’s filmmaking process and the story behind one of the most iconic horror movies of all time.
The deal was negotiated between Mike Chapman and Russell Webber for Sc Films and ICM Partners on behalf of the producers.
Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe and produced by Kerry Deignan Roy of Exhibit A Pictures, the talking-head deep-dive is co-produced by Annick Mahnert of Screen Division, Cathy Trekloff and Chad Herschberger of Milkhaus and Robert Muratore of Exa. Exclusive: Screen Media and Legion M have acquired North American rights to Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary feature Memory: The Origins of Alien, an exploration of the classic sci-fi film Alien. The companies release the film in theaters this summer, timed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Alien‘s theatrical release.
The deal marks the first since the partnership between Legion M and Css Entertainment, which owns film distributor Screen Media, was announced last December.
It also comes on Alien Day, an annual fan celebration of the 1979 Ridley Scott film. The holiday derives its name because the film’s colonial moon, Acheron, was originally known as Lv-426. Hence, the date of Alien Day has been fixed as April 26 each year.

One of the most iconic scenes in cinema history, the shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is explored in-depth in Alexandre O. Philippe’s new documentary 78/52, which recently made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. IFC Midnight has now acquired Us rights to the film that Daily Dead’s Heather Wixson calls “a thoughtful look back at Psycho‘s iconic shower scene and the genius behind it all.”
IFC Midnight has not yet set a Us release date for 78/52, but we’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is revealed. Additionally, Dogwoof recently acquired the UK distribution and foreign sales rights to 78/52.

IFC Midnight has acquired the U.S. rights to the documentary “78/52,” which premiered in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section, Deadline reports. The doc deconstructs the famous shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” that consisted of 78 setups and 52 cuts.
