So sad. Iconic poet, Amiri Baraka, passed away after a short illness on Jan. 9. He was known for his epic writing, his political voice, and his poem about 9/11 heard ’round the world.

Amiri Baraka: Activist Poet Dies At 79
Baraka, considered a founder of the 1960s Black Arts movement, made a name for himself by being unafraid to hold a mirror up to society with his writing. His own website said that he “adopted a confrontational style for his poetry, drama, fiction and essays. With intent to create awareness and about the concerns of African-Americans, his writings… on one hand have been praised as a voice against oppression,...

By now, the scene has become familiar: A sullied governor stands in a room packed with reporters and somber advisers to announce his resignation.
His wife stands next to him, looking as if she could use a gubernatorial pardon for what she would like to do him. The governor contritely confesses an affair.
In the case of former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey, the affair was with a man, as he famously announced, "I am a gay American." His resignation was also his coming out.
Alexandra Pelosi's "Fall to Grace," airing on HBO Thursday, March 28, focuses on McGreevey today as he helps women in prison and goes about his life.
Pelosi doesn't bother with the particulars of the legal and ethics violations that dogged McGreevey; he had appointed his lover to an important government position.

Chicago – “Thank you for coming out today,” said Idaho senator Larry Craig at an August ’07 press conference. He had been arrested two months prior on the charges of “lewd conduct” in a men’s restroom. This was the latest of many similar allegations aimed at the politician, who had spent his career hiding in the closet, while refusing to help pass legislation that would protect gay rights.
According to Kirby Dick’s galvanizing documentary, “Outrage,” Craig is merely one of many closeted politicians on Capitol Hill whose repressed lifestyle has led them to vote hypocritically. The film argues that if these key figures in America’s political establishment outed themselves, then their voting records would change dramatically. Most of the politicians Dick outs are white, male conservatives who seem to be punishing themselves because of their own impulses. As a result, they are also punishing every single gay American.
