‘Faking It’ Trio Honors the Trailblazing Show’s 10th Anniversary: ‘It Was a Show That People Needed’
Katie Stevens, Rita Volk, and Carter Covington need a minute. Before they can get to the task at hand, the two stars of MTV’s Faking It and their executive producer need time to catch up. As they each pop up in their respective Zoom windows, you can tell it has been a minute since they have seen each other. The smiles are uncontrollable. The laughter is already contagious. The love is real, even a decade later. The trio hopped on a call with TV Insider to reminisce about their trailblazing series in honor of its 10th anniversary. Even they can’t believe it has been a decade. Premiering on April 22, 2014, Faking It tells the story of Amy (Volk) and Karma (Stevens), two best friends who get mistaken for a lesbian couple in their progressive Texas high school and decide to go with it when they realize it might be...

The show went through several changes during its run. Before season 4, Lieber, Falco and Renna took over as showrunners. They stepped in for Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro who helmed the series since the beginning of Season 2, following Carter Covington’s exit after Season 1. Kruger and Shapiro remained on board as executive producers.
Last fall, Australian actress Lucy Barrett (Co-Ed) joined Melonie Diaz, who plays Mel, and Sarah Jeffery (Maggie) as a lead for the fourth season. She succeeded Madeleine Mantock who played co-lead Macy for the first three seasons.

During an Atx reunion panel celebrating his trailblazing MTV series Faking It, showrunner and executive producer Carter Covington expressed the opinion that the show would be much trickier to get off the ground today than it was just seven or so years ago.
“I do think [today] our original premise probably would have been blasted out before the show even aired,” he said. “It was a challenging premise. We all knew it would get attention.”
In his appearance on the panel alongside Covington, actor Michael J. Willett agreed that the initial conceit was tricky. “I think the idea had the potential to be very insensitive,” said the actor, who played Shane. At the same time, he said that the show is that much more commendable because of the risks it took, and the way in which tricky subject matter was approached. “I think that it was very masterful of Carter and...

Kruger and Shapiro previously co-created Salvation for CBS and served as executive producers on the nixed Halle Berry-starring Extant. Elsewhere, they were behind USA Network’s Necessary Roughness, and Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce.

Jimmy Tatro and Scott Porter have been cast in an upcoming episode of the first season of the CW’s “Charmed,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Tatro, who is best known for “American Vandal” and a recent stint on the second season of “The Guest Book,” will guest star as a “bad boy” angel named Gideon, while Porter will guest star as “good guy” angel Levi.
Gideon and Levi are a brother duo from a show within the show — a 1990s TV drama called “Heaven’s Vice” — on which they are tasked with saving mankind from the devil and his minions. Through a “magical mix-up,” they cross over into the real world and arrive in Hilltown via a portal, understandably confused and “quite the handful” for the sisters.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Last week we talked hits, so now for the misses. Which new TV show do you think will flop, and how would you fix it?
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
This new season lacks that one network show that stands out as just total shit. Some are weak, like “Rel,” because it wastes the star’s talent and others, like “The Kids Are Alright,” are mostly unnecessary since we already have like, five sitcoms about large messy families set in different decades with voiceovers. But most have something going for them to spare the viewer from inescapable TV hell. So I am giving this Jeers to The CW’s “Charmed” reboot for making several missteps, some thankfully fixable. Gina Rodriguez will direct the 11th episode of the CW’s “Charmed” reboot, Variety has confirmed.
“I’m very excited about that opportunity and obviously very excited that I get to do it with three Latinas,” Rodriguez said. “It’s really f—ing awesome. It’s going to be really exciting to see what that journey is.”
Rodriguez, who stars as the titular character on “Jane The Virgin” for the network made her directorial debut there last season, with the 10th episode of its fourth season. At the time, she told Variety that some of her influences in stepping behind the camera were past “Jane” directors Brad Silberling and Melanie Mayron.
“Brad Silberling is very poetic with the camera — the way he sets up blocking and the way he tells a story is very poetic, where it’s a reflection of the script and it’s telling a story inside of the story.

The cast and executive producers of The CW’s upcoming “Charmed” reboot debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, in part discussing how the new show will pay tribute to the original.
Executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman teased that the show will feature plenty of tribute and callbacks to the original, which fans in attendance got a small taste of when the show’s pilot screened before the Q&A.
When asked why now was a good time to bring the show back, Urman said, “The original was so much about female empowerment and sisterhood and women taking over the world and I think we need that right now.”
Series star Melonie Diaz also discussed the fact that her character is gay and the importance of representation on television in the modern era. “This should be a normal thing,” Diaz said of seeing her character with her onscreen girlfriend. “Just...

Charmed is officially returning to the air later this year, but instead of it being a revival series, it will be a reboot, complete with a new cast and characters.
Holly Marie Combs, a lead on the original series which aired from 1998 to 2006 on The WB has, once again, opened up about her thoughts on this new series.
The actress took to Twitter on Sunday to share a screenshot of a message she sent to reporter, Jenna Amatulli.
"Let me say first that I appreciate the jobs and opportunities the Charmed reboot has created," the actress begins her lengthy message.
"But I will never understand what is fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12 years ago," she continued.

The CW revealed a 2018-2019 TV schedule on Thursday with 12 hours of original scripted series — which The CW president Mark Pedowitz boasted was more than any other broadcast network except CBS.
“The more programming we have, the better off we are,” said The CW president Mark Pedowitz. “It includes our own cwtv.com, as well as the back end that the studios have on the Netflix arrangement. The affiliates were very much supportive of having another night of programming provided by the CW. It was combination of a multiple of things. We do believe in broadcast, we are growing and we wanted to stake a claim that we can grow while others contract.”
The CW will return to Sunday night with two female-centric shows as counterprogramming to NBC’s NFL football: “Supergirl” and the new version of “Charmed.”

The new take on “Charmed” comes from “Jane the Virgin” alum Jennie Snyder Urman and was originally developed last cycle and passed on by the network, is described as a “fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series” and will center on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches.
