- Laura is the granddaughter of legendary cartoonist, Dale Messick, who created the popular comic strip character Brenda Starr in 1940 and was one of the first successful female cartoonists with a syndicated comic strip. Laura (whose middle name is Dale) has written an award-winning play about her grandmother's life called Reporter Girl. Brenda Starr was turned into a movie in 1991 starring Brooke Shields and Timothy Dalton. Dale Messick is the recipient of multiple awards, including induction into the Hall Of Fame at the Society of Illustrators in New York City (2021). Her media contributions and unlikely rise in a field dominated by men is often discussed/taught in feminist studies classes.
