The phrase “water-cooler TV show” may have already sounded old fashioned long before workers began fleeing their offices in the early days of the pandemic, but the meaning of the term remains alive and well with countless fans discussing, debating, arguing about and bonding over their favorite shows online. Rather than gathering around the break room vending machine to chat about the previous night’s shocking twists, social media is the new meeting place where fan theories are traded back and forth. The problem is, it’s hard to go into serious detail or capture the true essence of a complex TV show in a measly 280-character tweet.
Perhaps that’s why TV podcasts have become so wildly popular over the past few years. Instead of boiling down an emotionally devastating episode of “Mare of Easttown” or a mind-bending hour of “Squid Game” in a handful of words, a well-produced...

Dexter’s Michael C. Hall looks chilling in the key art for Showtime’s upcoming revival Dexter: New Blood.
To celebrate the original series 15th anniversary on Friday, Showtime dropped two pieces of key art for Dexter’s next chapter, which is set to debut on November 7 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
Dexter, which aired for eight seasons on Showtime from 2006-13, centered on the mild-mannered Dexter Morgan (Hall). By day, Dexter worked as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. By night, he was a serial killer—one who happened to target other murderers.
Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, Dexter: New Blood finds the titular character living under an assumed name in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger inevitably beckons.

Showtime announced the return of the Dexter podcast Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up With Scott Reynolds to launch on Oct. 1 to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the original series starring Michael C. Hall. Episodes will drop weekly every Tuesday for 16 weeks.
The podcast premieres a little over a month before the release of the limited series Dexter: New Blood on Nov. 7.
Reynolds will flesh out the episodes and dissecting characters and will feature interviews with guest stars who bring the show to life. Fans can expect to hear from Hall, as well as Jennifer Carpenter, John Lithgow, executive producer Clyde Phillips, and many more.
“Resurrecting America’s favorite serial killer puts viewers in the passenger seat as I, along with my special guests, will lay it all out on the kill table,” says Reynolds. “This podcast is the perfect companion piece to cut deep into the dark drama that’s Dexter.

Showtime released the official trailer for the upcoming event series Dexter: New Blood, providing more than a few clues about what longtime fans of the killer show can expect.
For starters, Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan clearly hasn’t outrun his Dark Passenger. “Monsters walk among us,” Dexter says in voiceover, after we’ve seen that a serial killer – the exact type that the avenging Dexter has always chosen as his victims – has been stalking his new Upstate New York territory. “I might still be a monster, but I’m an evolving monster.”
And just to make absolutely certain we get the sharp-edged point, we see Dex sharpening a meat cleaver, and hear his long-suffering sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) ask, “You can not wait to kill again – have you learned nothing?”

Jennifer Carpenter makes her big return as Deborah Morgan in the Showtime limited series Dexter: New Blood where she’s taken over the role as her brother’s Dark Passenger in the premiere episode. The continuation of the series is set to premiere on November 7.
What does that mean for Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) deceased father Harry (James Remar), who was the original voice in the serial killer’s head?
“I love the concept of the Dark Passenger and being invited into Dexter’s psyche,” Carpenter revealed Tuesday during Showtime’s TCA presentation for the drama. “I feel like sometimes the Dark Passenger and the passenger is almost directly behind the wheel and it was an opportunity not to be an angel or devil on his shoulder, but to jerk the wheel to the left or right against his will. And to manipulate him, to navigate him, to abuse him,...

During the last eight years since Dexter Morgan faked his own death and went off the grid in Showtime’s serial killer drama, he has lived a “nomadic” existence according to star and executive producer Michael C. Hall. But when the continuation limited series, “Dexter: New Blood,” picks back up with him, he has settled down in the fictional small town of Iron Lake, N.Y. Only, he has settled down alone, having left his young son Harrison with his serial killer ex Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski).
Dexter is living in Iron Lake under the assumed name of James “Jim” Lindsay and dating the police chief, Angela (played by Julia Jones). He has also been able to keep his Dark Passenger at bay, trying to befriend a deer, which Hall said “represents some aspiration to goodness to purity — one that he wants to cultivate and wants to come closer and closer to,...

Nearly a decade since everyone’s favorite serial killer moved away and became a logger in 2013, Showtime’s Dexter is back—at Comic-Con@Home, at least. For the second year in a row, San Diego Comic-Con — the largest fan gathering in North America — has been forced by the pandemic to hold its annual convention as a virtual event. Last year’s Comic-Con@Home was a valiant effort to keep the 51-year tradition alive, but without marquee draws such as Marvel Studios and DC Films, it barely made a blip in terms of social media impact.
This year’s virtual Comic-Con has been scaled down, taking place largely over three days (July 23–25) instead of five. And with Marvel and DC sitting out once again, Comic-Con@Home promises to be a far more modest event than the gargantuan convention that’s drawn more than 130,000 attendees to San Diego every summer.
Ironically, the most Comic-Con-y event may be a panel Paramount is holding two days early — i.e. today — at 1 p.m. Pt for the “G.I. Joe” spin-off “Snake Eyes,...

Jennifer Carpenter is set to return to “Dexter” in Showtime’s limited-series revival, a person with knowledge of the plans confirmed to TheWrap. Her character, serial killer Dexter Morgan’s sister Deb, was killed off in the 2013 series finale, which was pretty widely panned.
Showtime declined to comment on this story.

First reported as a rumor earlier this morning over at The Hashtag Show, Marvel and Netflix smartly opted to not bother denying and just went ahead and officially confirmed the news with EW - "Game of Thrones" actor Finn Jones has scored the title role in the "Iron Fist" series.
The project is the fourth and final hero series in the original deal between Marvel and Netflix to adapt four of Marvel's properties into original series on the streaming service. A mini-series event, "The Defenders," starring the title characters from all four series is also on the way but a schedule hasn't yet been made clear.
The story focuses on Daniel Rand and his return to New York City after being missing for four years. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist.

"Dexter" and "Jessica Jones" writer Scott Reynolds reportedly confirmed (via Sciencefiction.com) that he has come onboard as a writer on Netflix's fourth Marvel series "Iron Fist".
The project mostly remains shrouded in secrecy at this point, though Reynolds would join Scott Buck who serves as the showrunner on "Iron Fist" and previously worked with Reynolds on "Dexter".
In the series, Daniel Rand returns to New York City after being missing for years and fights against the criminal element corrupting it with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist.

So far, Marvel has had tremendous success with their Netflix series. As of this writing, we've seen the first seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and both have been very well-received from both fans and critics alike. In putting these series on Netflix, Marvel has allowed themselves to go to much darker and mature places--places that wouldn't have worked so well in the more family friendly big screen pictures. As far as we're concerned, the buildup for the eventual Defenders series is going quite well.
If there was a character that was a potential sticking point in the universe, it would be the Iron Fist character. While the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage are by no means realistic, there is definitely a more grounded nature to the than what many would expect from Iron Fist, a character who has his basis in mysticism. For a good while now,...

Despite rumors to the contrary, it seems clear that Marvel does plan to move forward with its Iron Fist series for Netflix. Details regarding the show have been practically nonexistent up to this point, but we now know who'll be putting pen to paper and mapping out Danny Rand's small screen adventures. Writer Scott Reynolds, who also worked on Jessica Jones, updated his Twitter profile with the image above, and the details below. That's all we have to go on, but in the absence of some kind of official announcement, it's something at least! Still no set premiere date for Iron Fist, but the character is rumored to make his first appearance in Luke Cage this year.

No-one's safe in The Following this week - or any week, really...

The Following seems bound and determined to kill everyone they've introduced this season, one at a time, throughout the course of an entire season. To the best of my knowledge, a major character (or at least a potential major character) has died in just about every episode. If someone gets a name and a personality, they're probably going to get killed. (Even if they don't, they'll still get killed; just ask this week's hapless church janitor.)
As The Following inches closer and closer to its season finale, the show has decided to really throw itself into overdrive and bring out all the twists and turns that have been building up. Last week’s episode of The Following, “The Reaping”, was perhaps the best hour of the show’s scattered second season. Not only was it consistently entertaining, dark, and effective, it featured the long awaited reunion of Ryan (Kevin Bacon) and Joe (James Purefoy). Claire (Natalie Zea) revealed her survival to Joe and in perhaps the finest twist yet, Mike (Shawn Ashmore), this season’s breakout star, killed Lily Grey (Connie Nielsen) in cold blood as Ryan and Max watched in horror. It was a stunning and exceptionally well constructed moment.
Claire’s reveal to Joe, in a cleverly crafted coded message delivered by Carrie (Sprague Grayden), was a high point for Claire’s return, which has been a bit of a mixed bag for the series.

Review Ron Hogan 5 Mar 2014 - 07:15
The Following's staggeringly weird universe welcomes more craziness and cults this week. Here's Ron's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.7 Sacrifice
When you watch a lot of television like I've done, you get to know a lot of “that guy” actors and actresses who keep popping up on stuff to your surprise. They're people you kind of recognise from other stuff, but not enough to know who they are at first glance. This week's episode of The Following ends up being a who's who of the who's that set, with guest turns from a surprising amount of identifiable character actors playing a variety of horrible people who are popping up to make Ryan Hardy's life miserable.
Did you think that two separate cults were hard to follow? Lily on one hand, Joe on the other, Ryan Hardy on some mythical third hand, and lots...

The Following, Season 2, Episode 7, “Sacrifice”
Written by Scott Reynolds
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Last week’s episode of The Following, “Fly Away”, was mixed, although it did end strong with Joe (James Purefoy) and Ryan (Kevin Bacon) catching a glimpse of each other for the first time this season, Luke’s (Sam Underwood) brutal beating at the hands of Mike (Shawn Ashmore), and Lily’s (Connie Nielsen) collapse.
While there are lots of great moments in “Sacrifice”, The Following still hasn’t quite recovered from its previous episode. For one thing, Joe seems off his game, an observation this reviewer made last week as well. First there was his drugging at the hands of Lily and now he walks himself, Emma (Valorie Curry), and Mandy (Tiffany Boone) into the intense, terrifying cult that presumably gets Emma killed at the end of this week’s episode.

Dexter, Season 8 Episode 11 ‘Monkey in a Box’
Directed by Ernest Dickerson
Written by Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Airs Sundays 8:00pm, Showtime
There is a somewhat clichéd analogy used in regard to a fiction, in which the piece is compared to a dangerously misbehaving child. This line of thought always ends with the line “I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed”. This was applicable a week ago. This week, a more fitting denouement would be a Changeling style scenario where the parent screeches “That’s not my son!” Another potential comparison could be a first for locomotion; having rather lazily drifted off the rails and beyond the point of potential rescue, Dexter is now not even accessible to those craving a suitably entertaining train wreck.
With Vogel dead in a shock tactic by both Oliver Saxon and the writers that doesn’t actually alter the stakes or situation to any significant degree,...

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 10, ‘Goodbye, Miami’ Written By Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed By Steve Shill Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime -
What’s the best way to wrap up a big long story? Do you concentrate on the characters, ensuring that their journeys come to an end in a satisfying manner? Is it a matter of destroying the world you have set up to justify the use of such a clinical term as ‘the end’? Or is it a case of doing both, throwing every last inspired thought and radical idea into the pot for one final thrill ride both visceral and emotional? Well, it really depends on who you ask. And, ideally, if you want to have the options presented, you should probably have something left in the creative vault before the plug is pulled. With two episodes left, and the show’s past sticking to the formula of...

“Goodbye Miami”
Written By: Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed By: Steve Shill
Original Airdate: 8 September 2013
In This Episode...
Vogel is desperate to make amends with Oliver / Daniel. (I’m going to call him Oliver because that is how he was introduced to us.) She wants to help Oliver, but her help is merely to put him in a really nice institution and to visit every day. Oliver doesn’t appreciate this. He pins Richard’s death on his mother, because she didn’t give Oliver enough attention. And now he is feeling the same way about Dexter. He wants the same kind of life she “gave” to Dexter. Vogel tells Dexter later on that she doesn’t want him to kill her son, and promises that she is going to “save” him. She doesn’t want to be Dexter’s “excuse” for killing him. Dexter pays her lip service,...

Dexter, Season 8, Episode 5, ‘This Little Piggy’
Written By Scott Reynolds
Directed By Romeo Tirone
Airs Sundays, 8pm on Showtime
Just like an inherently destructive loved one; infuriating you, disappointing you, breaking your heart, only keeping the bond alive with rare flashes of nostalgic familiarity, then finally sucking you back in when the exit door looks inevitable with the palpable suggestion that things, finally, will be as great as they can be. Such is the existence of the loyal fan, forever questioning whether that connection you share with a material that once seemed life affirming is an irrationally emotional one. It is apt that last night’s episode of Dexter vaguely centered on the significance of family, because at times this show seems, appropriately enough, like the proverbial black sheep.
After the intellectually confusing previous installment, ‘This Little Piggy’ had a severe weight of expectation on it shoulders and for the most part,...

“This Little Piggy”

In This Episode...
Deb and Dexter are being counseled by Dr. Vogel. Dexter is mad in a way that I don’t think we have ever seen him before. He’s not just mad, but he is hurt. Deb is genuinely apologetic. Vogel sees this as a positive: Deb trying to kill her and Dexter was her hitting rock bottom; Deb saving her brother was her first step towards recovery. Dexter wants to get back to catching a killer - “according to you that’s all I’m good for.”
For the first time, Dexter is happy that Deb won’t be at work. He is ignoring her calls, deleting her voicemails, and is looking forward to locking himself in his lab. But first, he has to go to the morning briefing. Batista is...

This year at Comic-Con, there was a lot of fun stuff going down at the Entertainment Earth booth! For starters, 'Dexter' writer/producer Scott Reynolds hosted 2 live episodes of his official podcast for the series 'Dexter: Wrap-Up' with special guests Julie Benz and Aime Garcia & David Zayas. Several members of the cast were also on hand to sign autographs for fans through out various times during the week. But most importantly, Bif Bang Toys!, the company behind a lot of the 'Dexter' releated toys unveiled a brand new Dexter bobblehead, as well as a collectible 'Dexter' lunch box set, which features a new action figure, blood-slides and a talking key-chain. FEARnet caught up with both Reynolds and Bif Bang Pow! CEO Jason Lenzi to talk about all things 'Dexter' at this year's Comic-Con!

Remember those "Wrap-Up" podcasts Showtime posted last year after every episode of "Dexter"? Well, they're baaaaack! In this installment producer Scott Reynolds sits down with Julie Benz (Rita) and Jaime Murray (Lila).
If you're a fan of the show and have an hour and a half to spend traveling down memory lane with these two lovely ladies (who coincidentally are working together again on Syfy's "Defiance"), it's definitely time well spent!

The writers of projects based on cable TV hits "Dexter" and "The Walking Dead" were among the nominees for outstanding achievement in writing for new media and videogames announced Wednesday by the Writers Guild of America. John Esposito was nominated for "The Walking Dead: Cold Storage" and Scott Reynolds was nominated for "Dexter Early Cuts" in the derivative new media category. To be eligible for awards, a stand-alone new media program or episodes written for a new media series must have first been exhibited on a new media platform -- from the...

We're still not sure how Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) managed to hug a bloody corpse at the end of last night's finale of "Dexter" without getting a drop of the red stuff on her party dress, but maybe this final "Wrap-up" podcast of Season 7 will shed some light on things. If not, at least we get to hear once again from Sgt. Doakes!

"Dexter" Episode 7.12, "Surprise, Motherfucker!" Synopsis (12/16/12 Airdate)

Season seven of Dexter comes to a close this weekend, and I am anxious and excited for it. I am way too obsessed with this show, but luckily there is someone who doesn’t mind - or was at least polite enough not to tease me about it: writer Scott Reynolds. Reynolds has been on Dexter since season one and is a self-proclaimed fanboy. We talked at length about the evolution of the series, with special attention paid to the insane developments of the last season and a half.
It has been seven years in the making, but Deb finally knows Dexter’s secret. How did you guys tackle that? It’s such a delicate thing.
Well, in the books - I think at the end of the first book - Deb finds out. Then in the books they are working together - well, not really working together, but she...

You may or may not know this, but Dexter writer and producer Scott Reynolds hosts a weekly "Dexter Wrap-Up" podcast for Showtime, during which he answers fans' questions and interviews everyone from director Romeo Tirone to star Jennifer Carpenter to guest star Ray Stevenson. Following last night's penultimate episode of Dexter, Reynolds sits down for a rare interview with star Michael C. Hall.
"It's the longest interview with him that he's ever had," Reynolds told me of the hour-long interview. "We go deep into Dexter. He really explains a lot about Dexter Morgan and his relationships. It's great. I think people are really going love it, because [Michael] doesn't talk about stuff a lot. He's a very private guy - and rightly so. But he opened up a lot. It's pretty exciting."...

Dexter, Season 7, Episode 10: “The Dark…Whatever”
Written by Lauren Gussis, Jace Richdale & Scott Reynolds
Directed by Michael Lehmann
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on Showtime
Having made a significant and risky decision within the show’s narrative last week, ‘The Dark…Whatever’ proved to be a battle of how many steps backwards by the Dexter writing team could be rescued by positive movements forward, in effect whether good choices could offset the poor ones. By the end of the episode, the show came up out ahead, but only just, setting up to a very interesting final hurdle.
The unexpected visit of Hannah’s abusive, ex-con father unexpectedly proves to be hopeful as, despite Dexter’s reservations, the man seems to be reformed with a new appreciation for his daughter and ambitions to set up a new life in peace. It’s not long, however, before the real motives start...
