With their comic Minor Threats, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum found unexpected success with their title focused on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains.
Now, a background character in the comic that is about background villains is getting his moment in the spotlight.
From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly teams up the duo, who created Hulu’s stop-motion Marvel series M.O.D.O.K., with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, the illustrator of indie hit Eight Billion Genies. It tells a coming-of-age story about an insect monster-man, seen previously as a silent but oh-so-cool-looking humanoid fly in a punk jacket in certain panels of the Threat comics. Now, he is searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Dark Horse Comics is publishing the four-issue mini-series starting in July.

Amazon Studios has gotten its wish, picking up the rights to Eight Billion Genies, the comic book by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne.
No writer or filmmaker is attached yet, although Soule and Browne will act as executive producers.
Even without talent attachments, the deal is significant for the streamer as it involves not only feature films but series and more. The lofty mission for the property is for it to be the basis of an expansive cross-media universe, starting with a feature.
The comic, an eight-issue limited series that first hit stores in May, has a simple premise: What if every single person on the planet got a genie and one wish? Within seconds, the world is transformed forever, not into a paradise but into a collision of desires as varied as the humans who made them — from getting superpowers and seeing...

Newcastle United are among a host of Premier League clubs who have been offered Hull City forward Dame N’Doye this summer.
The relegated Tigers hope to get a fee of around £3 million-£4 million for the 26-cap Senegal international and have given Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Swansea City, Norwich City and Everton the opportunity to sign him, according to the Daily Mail.
Having parted with £2.2 million to secure N’Doye’s signature from Lokomotiv Moscow in January, Hull hope to still make a profit on a player who netted a respectable five goals in 15 Premier League appearances.
Lynne Cameron/Empics Sport
Having also bagged six goals in 26 Senegal caps, the 30-year-old forward is experienced and would provide a reasonable back-up option for a Premier League side at a relatively-low cost.

Newcastle United will not be able to sign Charlie Austin at a “bargain-bucket” price this summer and have been warned by their former forward Les Ferdinand that they must be prepared to part with a substantial amount of cash to sign the Queens Park Rangers striker.
The Magpies are the bookies’ favourites to land Austin this summer ahead of the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Southampton, but securing the forward’s signature from the already-relegated club will not come cheap according to Ferdinand, Qpr’s director of football.
Austin is the fourth-top scorer in the Premier League this season having bagged an impressive 17 goals despite playing for a side who are bottom of the table.

In all areas of life, there are people who just won’t go away, no matter how hard you try to block them out of your mind. The more you dislike them, the more they seem to appear.
Ocarina of Time has Navi. Game of Thrones has Joffrey. The footballing world has Joey Barton.
You’d think that with an ongoing career of implosions, people would learn to ignore him. Instead, quite the opposite has happened, with Barton frequently popping up on some of the biggest sporting stages.
He’s wormed his way onto Match of the Day, the occasional BBC Rugby broadcast, Channel 4’s NFL coverage and, away from sports, Question Time. All of this clearly proves that to make it as an ‘expert’ in every field, all you have to do is punch, kick and tweet philosophical insights about Nietzsche…
But while Barton’s reputation is infamous,...

Scott Snyder delivers nothing less than a tour de force in Batman #24 (art by Greg Capullo, DC Comics), continuing the Zero Year arc. This is a double-sized issue and Snyder crams in tributes to Bat-history (including a wonderful tribute to the cover of Detective Comics #27), well-placed cultural references and brand new iconic moments like his life depends on it. We get glimpses of the construction of the Batcave, Bruce Wayne gets a buzz cut that makes him look something like a crime-fighting Gareth Bale and his war with the Red Hood Gang comes to a head at a certain Ace Chemical plant…
Everything about the issue works beautifully. The larger amount of pages to play with have given Snyder and Capullo licence to go big with their story – this Batman doesn’t begin as a rumour passed around by paranoid criminals, but rather introduces himself to Gotham on the largest scale possible.

What if the atomic bomb was the least crazy thing being conceived as Los Alamos in the 1940s? What if there were numerous Manhattan Projects, each more diverse and unusual than the last? What if the scientists conducting these projects resented the authority exerted over them and decided to do something about it? The latter is the premise for this second volume as Oppenheimer and co. decide to split from their taskmasters led by the hilariously drawn President Truman as head of the Illuminati, the secret rulers of the world. But independence is an attribute the Illuminati will not tolerate from their subordinates and decide to corral them into submission – by sending in the Fdr-controlled robots!
Good news for fans of this series as “The Manhattan Projects, Volume 2” is as original and fascinating to read as the first volume was. Jonathan Hickman continues his retelling of the alternate 20th century history,...
