From 1958 to 1983, the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland – which was edited by the legendary Forrest J Ackerman, was a great source of information and entertainment for genre fans. A revival of the magazine was headed up by Ray Ferry – who ran into some legal issues with Ackerman – from 1993 to 2008, and then the rights to the logo and title were purchased by Philip Kim, who had “an agreement with Ackerman to use his trademarks to retain the magazine’s original look and feel”. Now Famous Monsters of Filmland is under new ownership, as Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor revealed to Rolling Stone that he has purchased the rights to the brand.
Taylor will be relaunching the magazine as a biannual or annual publication and also plans to put the Famous Monsters brand name on toys, films, and festivals. He first broke the news at the Son of Monsterpalooza convention. Taylor and his...

When Corey Taylor was five years old, Buck Rogers changed his life. If the Slipknot frontman hadn’t seen the 1979 film,Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, he never would have seen the trailer for John Carpenter’s genre-defining slasher flick, Halloween.
Taylor, now 48, still has total recall of the moment he first saw masked killer Michael Myers: “I can’t tell you one thing about the Buck Rogers movie, but I can remember everything about that trailer,” he says over Zoom, looking relaxed in a surprisingly brightly lit kitchen.

If you watch movies, then chances are you would instantly recognize Dick Miller's face, not just because he has more than 180 screen credits to his name (according to IMDb), but because he instills each of his characters with an unforgettable personality and indelible screen presence. Miller was truly a unique and wonderful performer, and it is with especially heavy hearts that we share the news of his passing at the age of 90.
Multiple sources, including The Hollywood Reporter, report the news of Miller's passing at the age of 90 in Toluca Lake, California. According to a family spokesperson, he passed away from natural causes and was surrounded by loved ones.
Miller's first film role dates back to 1955, and from that point on, there was no turning back for Miller, who was a constant presence in film and TV, playing memorable characters in just about every genre imaginable over seven decades.

Dick Miller, a prolific screen actor best known for his role as Murray Futterman in the 1984 classic horror film “Gremlins,” has died. He was 90.
With a career spanning more than 60 years, Miller has made hundreds of on screen appearances, beginning in the 1950s with legendary director and producer Roger Corman. It was then that he starred as Walter Paisley – a character the actor would reprise throughout his career – in the cult classic “A Bucket of Blood,” before going on to land roles on projects such as “The ‘Burbs,” “Fame” and “The Terminator.”
Miller also boasts a long history of high-profile director partnerships, working with the likes of James Cameron, Ernest Dickerson, Martin Scorsese, John Sayles and, perhaps most notably, Joe Dante, who used Miller in almost every project he helmed.
In one of Dante’s earlier films, “Piranha,” Miller played Buck Gardner, a small-time real estate agent opening up a...

Exclusive Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut Interview - The Scream Factory Comic-Con panel dropped huge news for Clive Barker fans last week when it was announced that they’d be releasing Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray. In an exclusive interview with Daily Dead, Russell Cherrington, Mark Miller, and Michael Plumides discuss their work on The Cabal Cut, teaming up with Scream Factory, bonus features, and where you can catch a screening of the movie later this week:
Congratulations on getting The Cabal Cut on Blu-ray.
Mark Miller: First let me say, this is an incredible time for Seraphim Films. We have worked closely with Morgan Creek on bringing the Cabal Cut to the world, and upon hearing the news that a deal had been struck with Shout Factory, we were overjoyed. The fruits of our labors have finally paid off. We eagerly await the next chapter in this saga.

One of the real exciting announcements to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut (review) is finally making its way to video. Michael Plumides is a filmmaker who was instrumental in making this happen.
Plumides recently sat down with Dread Central and talked about his experiences helping Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut finally see the light of day.
Dread Central: What was your role in this venture?
Michael Plumides: Well, I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although I've lived in Georgia and South Carolina I was born and raised here. And though my 4808 Club was shut down by the city after the infamous Gwar show of 1990, I still consider this my home - even if they tried to run me out on a rail. I wrote a book about it entitled, Kill the Music that someday I hoped to turn into a film.

Who needs a solo-day occasion like Christmas for a horror fix when you can have eight crazy nights of absolute terror? That's exactly what's on tap in Eben McGarr's new holiday-themed slasher flick Hanukkah, and we have a teaser for it right here! Dig it!
Hold on tight to your Torahs!
Synopsis
Obediah Lazarus is the son of Judah Lazarus, the original Hanukkiller. In 1983 Judah terrorized NY for seven nights and was preparing to sacrifice his eight-year-old son, Obediah, on the eighth night. Judah was convinced it was God’s will, like Abraham and Isaac, to sacrifice his only son to God. Luckily for Obediah, police tracked Judah down and stopped the sacrifice, but Judah was gunned down in the process. Warped by hatred with no guidance, Obediah Lazarus becomes a religious extremist, intolerant of non-Jews, "bad Jews", and those he perceives to be enemies of the Jewish faith.

I’m loving everything director Eben McGarr is doing so far, even if his films are perfect, they’re a blast. He’s made an exploitation sickie in Sick Girl and an ode to Universal horror films from the 1940s in House of the Wolf Man. Now, it’s time for a holiday slasher. Just look at the cool spoof one-sheets he’s made up for Hanukkah (via Bloody-Disgusting):

No this is not a joke, but worthy of a laugh or two as Bloody Disgusting announces the Jewish horror film Hanukkah setting up for production. The film will be in the vein of a slasher film where those who defy Judaic law face God's wrath (Hanukkah). This is the most original concept to come out in quite some time! The film is early in the production schedule so only a few details are available, all of which are below.

Sick Girl is the first feature by Eben McGarr, and the first starring role in a feature for its titular character, Leslie Andrews. Andrews plays Izzy, a girl growing up in a small town in California. She's tasked herself with protecting her younger brother, since her older brother enlisted with the Marines and was shipped out. Unfortunately for almost everyone in the movie, Izzy has some problems. Fortunately for those viewers interested in low budget gore films, Izzy has ways to vent her problems on the world. We start out with a dirty Izzy getting picked up by a school bus. There are some Catholic schools girls and a Sister on the bus as well. It's evident that Izzy doesn't fit in particularly well, both receiving and giving odd looks to the other girls on the bus. Driving behind the bus is the boyfriend of one of the girls, anxiously...

One of our eagle-eyed readers sent us a heads-up about a new installment in the Wolf Man saga entitled House of the Wolf Man that is being filmed in and around the Los Angeles area with Sick Girl (review here) director Eben McGarr pulling double duty as the film's writer and director and Lon Chaney, Jr.'s grandson, Ron Chaney, starring as the titular character.
Big Bad Wolf pointed us in the direction of Nuke the Fridge, where we learned the following: McGarr has shot the film to look exactly like a movie made in the 1940's era. Don May Jr. of Synapse Films got in touch with a big update on what the genre-centric DVD company has in store for the rest of 2009, and gave Fango the first look at the cover art for its upcoming Sick Girl disc (see it below). The biggest announcement is a new edition of the slasher sequel Stepfather 2, in which Terry O’Quinn (pictured) reprised his role as the ultimate bad dad.
“We’re releasing Stepfather 2 on September 29 to tie in with the remake of the original scheduled for October,” May tells us, “so we’re putting that one on the fast track. We’re big fans of the movie, and we jumped at the chance to get it. We will be porting over all the supplements from the previous disc,” released by Miramax in 2003, and since discontinued; these bonuses include an audio commentary by director Jeff Burr and producer Darin Scott.

Rating: 6.5 or 8 out of 10 (depending on my mood)
First, I want to make something clear. Today I gave this film a 6.5. I can, however, easily see myself giving this film an eight. I’m fine with that, because it makes sense. Sick Girl is a good film, with some really disturbing imagery and great acting by the lead. It is also, ironically, a very pleasing film to watch, that is, in between the scenes where our leading lady wreaks torturous havoc on the moving flesh of the world. During those scenes Sick Girl is not a nice film to watch. I predict, just as the themes and beauty in this film are disparate, so too will this film polarize its audience. That is why I am coolly hovering somewhere near the...

Rating: 6.5 or 8 out of 10 (depending on my mood)
First, I want to make something clear. Today I gave this film a 6.5. I can, however, easily see myself giving this film an eight. I’m fine with that, because it makes sense. Though they may take a very, very long time to get the films out there, you really can’t deny that it’s more than worth the wait for anything Synapse Films does these days. Their years-in-the-making DVD of Home Sick is the latest example, and recently president Don May, Jr. talked about two more upcoming releases that I’m sure will prove my point.
First is the Ed Lee adaptation, Header (review), which has been floating around festivals for going on two years now, ”It’s real important to mention that we were going after that one for a number of years.” he told Fangoria in a recent interview ”We’re big fans of Ed Lee, and when we got the submission, we were like, ‘Great!’ But it took a long time to get that set up. Now we’ve got Ed’s participation, he’s really excited about us doing the film,...

Fango just chatted with Don May Jr. of Synapse Films, who talked up his upcoming discs of the new indie shockers Sick Girl (pictured) and Header. The former (no relation to Lucky McKee’s same-titled Masters Of Horror episode) is a truly twisted tale from writer/director Eben McGarr.
Leslie Andrews stars in the title role of Izzy, an orphaned girl who takes an extremely violent approach to protecting her younger brother; you can see the movie’s official website here. “It’s just a brutal, brutal movie,” May tells Fango. “It’s funny, too; the filmmakers have a really good sense of humor—and hey, it’s got Stephen [Fright Night] Geoffreys in it!” The extras are currently being put together for Sick Girl, and while it’s too early to report those details, May notes that Synapse will likely use the striking promo photo seen here on the DVD’s cover.

It’s odd; I have had a copy of Sick Girl in my hands since it got such a good reaction at the last Fear Fest, but I’ve yet to actually sit down with it yet. My plan was to do so tonight, which may have inspired the good news Twitch learned today.
Synapse Films has jumped on board to distribute Eben McGarr’s Sick Girl to the DVD market sometime next year. For those unsure, the film is the story of a girl that wants to fuck her older brother, protect her younger brother, and torture everyone else out in her barn. Can’t get much simpler (or more fucked up) than that!
We’re not sure yet when the film will be out, but keep your eyes here and on the official Sick Girl site for updates! For now enjoy a trailer and hi-larious PSA below!

Both the teaser and “Don’t Talk” public service announcement for Eben McGarr’s berserk independent horror film Sick Girl have been floating around the Internet for a while. It is time, however, to highlight these videos again. Why? First, the film’s teaser has a theme that sets the right tone for the holidays (at least in more dysfunctional households). Second, Sick Girl is being released on DVD by Synapse Films, thus giving extreme horror enthusiasts something to look forward to in 2009. The videos, neither of which are safe for work, await beneath the fold. You have been warned.

If you head on over to Bdtv you can check out an exclusive first look at the new trailer for Eben McGarr's Sick Girl, which recently has completed post production. The film stars Leslie Andrews and Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-Evil). It's the story of Izzy - a girl that wants to screw her older brother, protect her little brother and torture people out in the barn. Watch for stills and more details soon, but from what I'm told this one is pretty vile!
