There are nearly 500 anti-lgbtq+ bills currently advancing through state legislatures. Many bills specifically target drag shows or other public performances–censoring or outright banning them. Of course, there are also plenty of Don’t Say Gay bills, bathroom bills, and other anti-trans bills circulating in this country. It’s a terrifying time to be queer. Such lawmaking creates an atmosphere of fear, hate, and violence, and it’s difficult to find joy. Joy, such an elusive experience these days. But I found the joy I so desperately needed recently with Wesley Taylor and Alex Wyse’s Summoning Sylvia, one of the year’s most important releases.

The new horror film Summoning Sylvia centers around a gay bachelor party that goes awry after a seance is performed to make contact with the spirits that are rumored to haunt the house the group is renting.
Frankie Grande spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers in an exclusive interview about his role in the film.
“We’re just a bunch of gay guys in a house,” Grande said of the plot. “There’s no agenda, and the stories are not about our coming of age, coming out or dealing with external societal pressures. It is not a trauma story about gay people, which is what we usually see. It has universal themes that apply to everybody.”
He emphasized that the film is an example of “how inclusivity does not exclude the audience, it just includes more people.”

Now available on VOD and Digital HD on all major platforms from The Horror Collective, our latest Q&a is with Summoning Sylvia co-star Troy Iwata who tells us all about the new LGBTQ horror comedy:
What drew you to Summoning Sylvia and the character of Reggie?
Troy Iwata: I actually auditioned for Kevin originally, sent in an audition tape for that and then just got an offer for Reggie so I was like…ok. Any opportunity that offers a refreshing glimpse into queer representation I’m all for. First off I was obsessed with how funny the script was and the blending of genres was enticing as well. I loved that it was a story that took place after the coming-out process, after the self-discovery and acceptance process. There’s an entire life that happens after all of those journeys for queer people and it’s light and beautiful...

A gay bachelor party gets mysterious when the group of men recount the house’s legend from a hundred years ago. A woman, Sylvia, slaughtered, and buried her son beneath the floorboards. But things get even worse when Larry remembers he was supposed to be bonding with his soon-to-be brother-in-law, and as he invites him over, the séance begins.
If you hadn’t guessed from that synopsis above, Summoning Sylvia is a comedy horror and thankfully, what it does best, is actually be funny. There are lots of jokes on stereotypes, which could often seem as an easy joke or perhaps lazy but it doesn’t feel like that here at all. The two writers have to take credit for that (Wesley Taylor and Alex Wyse...

YouTube has again turned to big-name entertainment personalities to anchor its latest slate of ad-supported originals.
At its Brandcast Delivered event for advertisers Tuesday, YouTube announced an unscripted series with Will Smith following his latest fitness journey and a new docuseries with Alicia Keys premiering this summer.
The video giant also announced the third and final season of comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring popular comedian and YouTube creator Liza Koshy — marking the last of YouTube’s scripted originals, after phasing them out starting in 2019; “Ice Cold,” a docuseries produced by hip-hop trio Migos exploring issues around racial inequity; and a new special celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture from executive producers including LeBron James and Michelle Kwan.
The YouTube Originals strategy remains the same: They’re projects built around personalities and top YouTube creators designed to draw a large audience, as well as specials to support specific causes, said YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl.

It is exec produced by Koshy, Courtney Carter, Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont, Marc Lieberman, Ally Engelberg, Caroline Miller and Elliot Glazer.

YouTube claims its new windowing strategy for originals — making them available to watch free, with ads, for everyone — is delivering big audiences just as execs hoped.
Season 2 of “Liza on Demand,” the sitcom starring and co-created by popular YouTube comedian Liza Koshy, scored more views for debut episode “Naked” in its first week than any of the video platform’s original series to date. In the episode, through a series of mishaps, Koshy’s character accidentally finds herself nude in public — and she later strips bare on a city street in a bid to prove she has nothing to hide.
Across all episode 1 debuts for YouTube Original shows, “Liza on Demand” had the biggest debut ever with 25 million views in the first seven days (Sept. 25-Oct. 1), according to YouTube. “Cobra Kai” season 2, a spinoff of the “Karate Kid” movies, previously held the seven-day record with 21 million views in April 2019, followed...

The title of the wonderful new Own drama David Makes Man is slightly misleading. Yes, it’s about a 14-year-old boy named David (Akili McDowell) struggling to become a man faster than he should have to, due to the complicated circumstances of his life. But David is just one of several names and identities our anxious and deeply sympathetic hero goes by.
To adults like his recovering addict mother Gloria (Alana Arenas) and his teacher Dr. Woods-Trap (Phylicia Rashad), he is David, a very smart but reserved boy doing his...

Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney was on hand at the TCA press tour to talk about his new drama David Makes Man. It’s a raw look at the life of David (Akili McDowell), a 14-year-old prodigy from the South Florida projects. Haunted by the death of his closest friend and relied on by his hardworking mother (Alana Arenas), he goes to a magnet school where he is surrounded by people who neither live nor look like him.
Loosely based on his own experience, McCraney said that the show will explore “the dexterity that you learn in one set of circumstances or one socialized environment and the total new morality you learn in another.”
He continued, “I would cross a border into a very white neighborhood and take the bus to a very white school.” There he said, “It was important for people to say that a person is ‘less than.

YouTube Premium apparently likes what it’s seeing with Liza On Demand, whose second season is currently in production after being greenlit in January.
At a Q&A event last night, YouTube’s chief business officer Robert Kyncl surprised his interviewer -- Demand star Liza Koshy -- by sharing that YouTube Premium was adding two more episodes to season two. The first season of Liza On Demand -- in which Koshy’s character tries her hand at the gig economy to hilarious results -- comprised eight episodes, meaning that season two will stand tall at 10 total episodes. Liza On Demand stars Koshy -- who recently returned to her long-dormant YouTube channel -- in the titular role, with co-stars Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is The New Black) and Travis Coles playing her best friends.

Among the new series screening at South by Southwest is “David Makes Man,” presenting its first episode before a bow on Own this August. While the episode represents only a glimpse of the show to come, it’s promising — both for Own and for the South by Southwest confab — that this show is, from its first moments, quite so lived-in and credible. It joins, on Oprah Winfrey’s dedicated network, a suite of accomplished dramas including “Queen Sugar”; at the Austin festival, it’s a welcome step outside pure genre, and into a world in which the concerns of young black boys are paramount.

One of YouTube's biggest stars has returned to the video site's paywalled subscription platform. Liza Koshy, who recently surpassed 15 million subscribers on her personal channel, is the star of Liza On Demand, a comedy series now available for YouTube Premium subscribers.
The attitude of Koshy's character in Liza On Demand is laid out in the show's first scene, during her argument with a bratty Uber customer. "I am 'gig economy or die' all day," Koshy boasts. The series followers her adventures in the world of tasks, where she is joined by friends portrayed by castmates Kimiko Glenn and Travis Coles.
Here's the first episode, one of two available for free on Koshy's channel. Viewing the remaining six installments of Liza On Demand's first season will require a YouTube Premium subscription, which costs $11.99 per month.
