Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.
At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

Madrdi, May 10 (Ians) Real Madrid and Manchester City drew the first leg of their Champions League semifinal 1-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium after a thrilling 90-minute game.
Vinicius Jr put Real Madrid ahead in the first half, but Kevin de Bruyne leveled for the Premier League leaders midway through the second half, reports Xinhua.
Manchester City made six changes from the side that beat Leeds United at the weekend, while Real Madrid’s only changes from the team that won the final of the Copa del Rey were to bring in Luka Modric for Aurelian Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger for the suspended Eder Militao.
Man City kicked off by dominating the ball, pressing high and winning possession high up the field, and Thibaut Courtois was called into action to save from De Bruyne in the eighth minute.

Madrid, April 28 (Ians) Real Madrid’s Croatian midfielder Luka Modric is likely to miss the Copa del Rey final and the first leg of their Champions League semifinal after suffering a muscle injury.
The 37-year-old had to limp out of his side’s 4-2 defeat in Girona on Tuesday with an evident problem and following tests, the Real Madrid website posted a statement on Friday, a Xinhua report said.
“Following tests carried out on Luka Modric by the Real Madrid Medical Services, an injury to the back of his left thigh has been diagnosed. His progress will be monitored.”
Although the statement did not give a return date, any muscle injury needs at least a fortnight to recover from and that means Modric will almost certainly miss the Cup final against Osasuna on May 6 and the Champions League home leg against Manchester City three days later, as well as Saturday...

Madrid, April 13 (Ians) Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio gave Real Madrid a 2-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Real Madrid dominated nearly the entire match against a rival that appeared worryingly disorganised at times, but they could be slightly disappointed not to have put the tie out of reach given their dominance.
While Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, repeated the side that won 4-0 away to Fc Barcelona in the Copa del Rey a week ago, Frank Lampard opted to play with three central defenders, wingbacks, and a midfield trio of N’Golo Kante, Enzo Fernandez, and former Madrid player, Mateo Kovacic, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, April 11 (Ians) Real Madrid aims to return to business as usual when they take on Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti picked an attacking side, with Benzema, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo in attack and Fede Valverde in midfield, while Xavi Hernandez’s options were limited by injuries with Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele all sidelined.
Barca started stronger, with Lewandowski seeing a shot deflected wide and Raphinha heading at Thibaut Courtois before great defending from Ronald Araujo denied Vinicius Jr and a quick Madrid counterattack.

Madrid, March 16 (Ians) Real Madrid booked their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at home to Liverpool, giving them a 6-2 triumph on aggregate.

Both sides had chances to score in an entertaining first half but Madrid had the best of them, and were it not for the heroics of Alisson in the Liverpool goal, the tie would have been dead and buried long before Benzema’s goal, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, March 3 (Ians) Fc Barcelona produced a rock-solid and very untypical defensive display to beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal.
Real Madrid dominated the ball and had Barca pinned back for much of the game, with Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde all outstanding; Madrid barely produced a save from Marc Andre Ter Stegen all game.
Without Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele, Barca opted for a pragmatic approach, with Franck Kessie in the starting 11 and Raphinha and Ferran Torres carrying the visitors’ attack.
Real Madrid dominated possession in the first half, with Luka Modric running on goal in the first minute, although the offside flag went up. The flag went up again in the 12th minute to rule out an effort from Benzema after a good cross from Vinicius Junior, who was involved in...

Madrid, Feb 27 (Ians) Fc Barcelona wasted a chance to move 10 points clear at the top of La Liga when they lost 1-0 away to Almeria.

What followed was an exercise in frustration for Barca who tried, but failed to create clear chances against a rival that had lost three consecutive matches and started the game in the relegation zone.
Xavi Hernandez commented post-match that it was his side’s worst display of the season.

Madrid (Spain), Feb 26 (Ians) Fc Barcelona can go 10 points clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday if they win away to Almeria after Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid.

Madrid (Spain), Feb 20 (Ians) Midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni have both been left out of the Real Madrid squad that left for Liverpool on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.

Madrid, Jan 26 (Ians) Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid go head-to-head in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Friday (1:30am Ist) for a place in the semifinal of the Copa del Rey knockout tournament.
The Madrid derby sees Real Madrid return to their home ground for the first time since November 10 — a total of 77 days — and the return has already created some controversy, with the club sending just 334 tickets to Atletico for the match, reports Xinhua news agency.
Real Madrid go into the game after winning 2-0 away to Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday, in a game where their effectiveness in attack was the difference against a rival that controlled much of the ball.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to bring Luka Modric and Toni Kroos back into his starting 11 for the game, although injuries to David Alaba and Dani Carvajal mean Nacho Fernandez and Ferland Mendy will continue as full backs.

Madrid (Spain), Jan 17 (Ians) The last 16 matches of the Spanish Copa del Rey knockout competition are played this week, with Fc Barcelona and Real Madrid both in action on Thursday night.
Newly-crowned Supercup winners Barcelona travel to face Ceuta. However, Barca should not get overconfident as Ceuta defeated top-flight opponents Elche in the last round, and the visit to the Spanish enclave on the coast of North Africa is not easy, involving a helicopter flight from Malaga.
Real Madrid hardly have time to lick their wounds and recover tired legs before they travel to Villarreal for what looks like the toughest tie of the round.
Villarreal beat Madrid 2-1 in La Liga less than a fortnight ago and have had more time to prepare for the match, while Real Madrid are likely to be without David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez, and players, such as Luka Modric, looked flat and tired in Riyadh.

Real Madrid brought Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy into their starting 11, while Andreas Christensen, Alex Balde and Sergio Busquets were all in for Barcelona.

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said his players were in good shape ahead of his side’s return to La Liga action following the FIFA World Cup.
The Italian was asked about the fitness of his players, plans for any possible signings in January, and also whether he had been contacted with a view to becoming new coach of the Brazil national team.
Ancelotti said his team was in good shape to return to domestic action against Real Valladolid on Friday.
“We’re fine, we’ve got [Karim] Benzema back and that’s good. Those who have joined today [Luka Modric, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga] have a specific training plan, but everyone is fine, except Mariano [Diaz], who sprained his ankle in a friendly,” commented the coach.
Benzema was due to play in the World Cup, but had to leave the France training camp after suffering an injury to his left thigh.

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga returns to action on Thursday after a six-week break for the FIFA World Cup. Here are some things to look out for in the coming days.
1. How will Barca do after World Cup efforts?
No club provided more players to the World Cup than Barcelona, who had 17 players in Qatar, with Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde playing in the final with France. While most teams were able to enjoy a mid-season break, most of Barca’s squad were hard at work and the lack of first-team members in Spain also complicated Xavi Hernandez’s job of organising training sessions.
The effects of tiredness may not be felt straight away as Barca visit local rivals Espanyol, but they could affect Barca’s form in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the club will be without Robert Lewandowski against Espanyol due to suspension but could have central...

Doha, Dec 20 (Ians) The 2022 World Cup final will go down in history as one of the greatest ever, as Argentina won 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the scoreline was locked at 3-3 at the end of extra time. And, Gonzalo Montiel will forever be remembered as the player who scored the winning spot kick, with the Sevilla Fc right-back displaying cool confidence to send France captain Hugo Lloris the wrong way and to kickstart the celebrations.
Not only was it a historic penalty, but it was also a brilliantly executed one. The full-back didn’t even look at Lloris and, with the world watching, he focused solely on the ball, dispatching a solid and sure kick to his left.
That made it ten penalties converted from ten penalties attempted in the 25-year-old’s career, after he started taking spot kicks while working under Marcelo Gallardo at River Plate. “We...

Doha, Dec 18 (Ians) Croatian playmaker Luka Modric partially ended speculation about his future after helping his side to a third-place finish in the FIFA World Cup finals.
The 37-year-old again pulled the strings in midfield as Croatia beat Morocco 2-1 in the Third Place Play-Off, showing why coach Zlatko Dalic is keen for him to continue.
Many had expected Modric to call an end to his international career after 162 appearances for his country, but he confirmed he will carry on for at least another six months, reports Xinhua news agency.
“I will continue until the end of the Nations League final and then we’ll see,” Modric told the press after Saturday’s game.
The Nations League will be played in June 2023, with Croatia among the four countries in the ‘Final Four’ along with Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.
“This could be my last World Cup, but I can’t say anything now.

"I hope he will be with us and I am looking forward to that. I am quite certain he will be. Luka Modric will decide personally how he feels. Knowing how he feels about the national team and about football, I’m pretty sure he will be but of course this is his decision," Dalic said ahead of the third place play-off match against Morocco.
The two teams clashed in a goalless draw in the group stage, with Morocco topping the group over the 2018 runners-up Croatia, who came second while World No.2 side Belgium and Canada were knocked out from the group.
"The first match was the opening match, so it was important for both sides not to lose. It was played at 1pm and for both of us it was not convenient. Tomorrow will be a different match," he said about the first group match.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 12 (Ians) They are numbers that would make a football ‘purist’ such as Pep Guardiola break out into a cold sweat, or have former Spain coach, Luis Enrique trembling in his bed, but if there is one thing the current World Cup in Qatar is showing, it is that possession of the ball is not everything in football.
Maybe ‘tiki-taka’ isn’t dead (although it is badly wounded in Spain), but the World Cup is most definitely making a very solid case for the defense.
Morocco aren’t fooling anyone after rugged defensive displays against Spain and Portugal have earned them a historic semifinal tie against France.
The Moroccan side had just 23 percent of the ball against Spain and just 22 percent in their 1-0 quarterfinal win against Portugal. The story is a little different from the group stage, where they had less than 35 percent of the ball against...

Doha, Dec 12 (Ians) The semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will see Croatia take on Argentina and France play Morocco, look as if they will be a triumph of pragmatism over brilliance and emblematic of hard work on the pitch.
Croatia reached the semifinals for the second time in four years after a nerve-shredding penalty shootout against Brazil that left the pre-tournament favorites in tears.
The never-say-die spirit of the Croatians, coupled with the excellence of veteran midfielder Luka Modric and defender Dejan Lovren, saw a fine defensive display and shows that a side that has taken many ties in knockout stages of recent major tournaments to extra time, does not know how to give up, reports Xinhua news agency.

Instead, Neymar’s team crashed out of the football showpiece event after going down 4-2 to 2018 runners-up Croatia in the penalty shootout.
At the Education City Stadium on Friday the teams were locked goalless at the end of the normal period of play and both teams found the back of the nets in the 30 minutes of extra time. Brazil scored first with Neymar scoring a gem of a goal in the 105th minute only to find Croatia fighting it back to draw level in the 117th minute through Bruno Petkovic and take the 120 minutes to clash into a penalty shootout.
Dominik Livakovic in goal for Croatia was once again brilliant. He will likely be a contender for the best goalkeeper of the World Cup award.

Al Khor (Qatar) Nov 23 (Ians) Held to a goalless draw by Morocco in their World Cup Group F game on Wednesday, Croatian captain Luka Modric downplayed the high expectations for his team, saying that they need to take it one step at a time.

Madrid, Nov 8 (Ians) Real Madrid surrendered the leadership of La Liga to Fc Barcelona after losing a thrilling game 3-2 away to local rivals Rayo Vallecano on Monday night.
Rayo had lost 19 of their last 20 games against Real Madrid, but were good value for the win after a fearless attacking display, coupled with some last-ditch defending in the closing minutes.
Rayo started the game like an express train against a team still missing Karim Benzema in attack. The home side looked to move the ball quickly and pressure Madrid high up the field, and soon got their reward when Santi Comisana scored a left-foot volley from Alvaro’s cross from the left after just five minutes, reports Xinhua.
Rayo continued to dominate with Oscar Valentin firing over and Isi Palizon forcing a good save from Thibaut Courtois, before the game changed radically in the 36th minute.

Madrid, Oct 24 (Ians) Fc Barcelona remain three points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after a 4-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.
One of Barca’s best performances of the season coincided with Bilbao’s worst as Barca led 3-0 at the break thanks to Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute header, followed by Sergi Roberto’s 18th-minute shot, which took a slight deflection to lift it over Athletic keeper Unai Simon.
Robert Lewandowski added a third in the 22nd minute and Bilbao weren’t helped by Ander Herrera limping off injured, reports Xinhua.
Herrera’s replacement Dani Garcia also had to go off injured in what was a relatively tepid second half which saw Ferran Torres score Barca’s fourth following a pass from Dembele.
Atletico Madrid moved third after a 2-1 win away to Real Betis thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann.

Madrid (Spain), Oct 1 (Ians) Real Madrid will look to maintain their perfect start to the season when they play Osasuna in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side go into the game with six wins from six in La Liga and with two wins from their two Champions League games, ahead of a fortnight that could see them assure their place in the knockout stage of the tournament with two matches against Shakhtar Donetsk, before playing Fc Barcelona in the first ‘Clasico’ of the season.
With the first of those games against Shakhtar on Wednesday, Ancelotti may be tempted to rest some first-team regulars, especially those who have returned from international duty, although injuries to Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric slightly limit his options.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 15 (Ians) Real Madrid scored two late goals to beat Rb Leipzig 2-0 to maintain their 100 percent start to their UEFA Champions League defense.
Fede Valverde continued his excellent recent run of form to put Madrid ahead ten minutes from the end of what had been an even game on Wednesday night.
The Uruguayan opened the scoring with a left-foot strike after receiving a diagonal pass from Vinicius Jr., before cutting inside and shooting into the bottom corner of the net.
Marco Asensio took advantage of a rare opportunity this season when he netted Madrid’s second goal in injury time, taking a pass from Toni Kroos on the left of the pitch before smashing the ball home.
The two goals decided a close game in which Leipzig had the best chances in the first half, with Christopher Nkunku twice denied by excellent saves by Thibaut Courtois and...

Madrid (Spain), Sep 13 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will continue his policy of squad rotations for Wednesday’s Champions League tie at home to Rb Leipzig.
Last week’s 3-0 win away to Celtic got Real Madrid’s title defense off to a perfect start and they are clear favourites against a side that kicked off their European campaign with a 4-1 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
That defeat saw coach, Domenico Tedesco, sacked and replaced by Marcos Rose in the Rb Leipzig dugout and Rose began his time in charge with a 3-0 win at home to Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid are without Eder Militao, Karim Benzema and Lucas Vazquez for Wednesday, but Ancelotti will be able to bring Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal into his side to freshen things up.
Meanwhile, Eden Hazard or Marco Asensio will probably cover for Benzema, although...

“Destination Paris,” an original soccer documentary that traces the 2021-2022 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League season, is headed to Paramount+ for a Sept. 6 debut, TheWrap can exclusively reveal.
The sports doc follows award-winning journalist and CBS sports analyst Guillem Balagué as he goes behind-the-scenes leading up to and during the world’s most prestigious club soccer tournament. His monthslong travels offer intimate and exclusive insight into how Europe’s elite teams managed radical change within their clubs, as well as social, economic and political obstacles amid the war in Ukraine.
With cameras in tow, Balagué details the season’s biggest stories, from life without Lionel Messi at Barcelona to Real Madrid’s stunning rally to a record 14th title. The film also traces the responses within European soccer to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, including UEFA moving the Champions League Final to Paris from St. Petersburg.

Madrid, Aug 22 (Ians) Four teams remain unbeaten in the Spanish La Liga after two rounds of the new season. Here are some things we learned over the weekend:
Ansu Fati Could Be Barca’S Best Signing
Fc Barcelona scored three second-half goals to decide a game that was looking evenly balanced at 1-1 away to Real Sociedad, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen making some vital saves to stop Barca from going behind.
All of that changed with the entry of Ansu Fati into the game, as the youngster provided two assists and scored himself as Barca ran out 4-1 winners.
Fati has endured two terrible years with knee and muscle injuries and it’s hard to believe he is still just 19 years old, but once again he showed his enormous talent.
Much has been made of Barca’s transfer business this summer, but if Fati stays fit, he will be the player who makes the difference.

Madrid, Aug 21 (Ians) Defending champion Real Madrid sailed to a 4-1 road victory over Celta Vigo, and are joined by Real Betis and Osasuna as teams with a perfect record going into the new La Liga season.
After Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas cancelled out Karim Benzema’s early penalty on Saturday evening, goals from Luka Modric, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde kept Real Madrid rolling early in its title defence.
Both of Betis’ goals in their 2-1 win away to Mallorca, and Osasuna’s two goals in their 2-0 home win over Cadiz came from the penalty spot, Xinhua reports. Borja Iglesias put Betis ahead in the ninth minute, and Vedat Muriqi levelled for Mallorca early in the second half. A harsh penalty given for a supposed foul on Nabil Fekir allowed Iglesias to score from the spot to decide a match where the referee showed 15 yellow cards.

Paris, Aug 13 (Ians) Karim Benzema was among the 30-man list of nominees for the 2022 Ballon d’Or award, which was announced by France Football on Friday, while seven-time winner Lionel Messi was omitted from the list for the first time since 2006.
Messi’s arch-rival, five-time winner Cristiano Ronald was included, as well as Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, French forward Kylian Mbappe, and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
However, another Psg star Neymar also missed out on the nomination which meant that Mbappe will be the sole player on the list coming from French Ligue 1, reports Xinhua. Messi, who won the title last year, had been nominated 15 times in a row since 2006 (except for in 2020 when the award was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic). The 35-year-old didn’t meet his own lofty standards in his first season at Psg, following his shocking move from Barcelona to the French capital last summer.
