Megadeth surprised fans with an impromptu acoustic set in front of the Hotel Madero in Buenos Aires.
Local Argentinians and Megadeth faithful who happened to catch the performance were treated to unplugged renditions of “Trust,” “Angry Again,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” And by unplugged, we mean totally acoustic — no mics, open air. Drummer Dirk Verbeuren doesn’t even have an instrument and instead slaps his thighs to the beat.
In the fan-filmed footage, the gathered crowd sings along soccer-chant style and actually overtakes the band in volume.
The pop-up set reprises Megadeth’s previous outside-of-hotel acoustic sets in Buenos Aires in 2016 (Four Seasons) and in 2018, when Mustaine played a surprise unplugged solo set for fans outside a hotel in Mendoza, Argentina, during a brief vacation following shows in Mexico.
Megadeth’s current Latin American tour runs through the end of April, followed by a European jaunt in June (tickets available here.

Guitarist Kiko Loureiro left Megadeth for good in late 2023 after an extended leave of absence from the band. But before he departed, Loureiro suggested another ex-Megadeth axeman to take his place: Marty Friedman.
Friedman famously played guitar in Megadeth during the 1990s, contributing his virtuosic guitarwork to two of the band’s most beloved albums, 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, among other LPs.
The pairing of Dave Mustaine and Friedman pairing stands as one the greatest twin-guitar attacks in heavy metal history, and some fans thought Loureiro’s initial absence from the band — temporary at first (he sat out multiple tours) — was the perfect time to bring Friedman back into the fold.
Apparently, Loureiro had the same idea.
“Actually, I even mentioned to management and Dave that I thought bringing Marty Friedman back would be amazing,” Loureiro told Guitar World in a new interview.

Kiko Loureiro is extending his absence from Megadeth and will remain away from the band during its “heavier touring schedule” in 2024.
The Brazilian guitarist initially sat out the fall leg of Megadeth’s 2023 tour due to “family reasons.” Finnish axeman Teemu Mäntysaari filled in as a replacement and will retain that role for the upcoming tour dates.
Loureiro issued a statement on Instagram regarding his continued absence:
“Dear Megadeth fans, I want to share with you a decision that hasn’t been easy for me.
In September, I had to step away from the U.S. leg of the tour for family reasons. Looking ahead, during 2024, we anticipate an even heavier touring schedule for Megadeth. After thorough reflection and discussions with Dave Mustaine and Megadeth’s management, we have collectively agreed that it is the right move to extend my absence. Marty Friedman contributed to a number of Megadeth’s all-time classic albums, most notably 1990’s Rust in Peace and 1992’s Countdown to Extinction, but had not shared the stage alongside Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine since his exit from the band in 2000. But that all changed on Monday, February 27th, when the guitar virtuoso reunited with Megadeth for three songs during their headlining performance at Tokyo’s legendary Budokan Arena.
“It was just like a perfect exclamation point on everything that we had done together up until this point,” Friedman told Heavy Consequence a day after the show. “You couldn’t have written a better way for the whole thing to play out. It was just perfect timing, just a very natural and organic way to do it.”
Friedman has resided in Japan for the better part of two decades, and both the timing and location of the gig were more than ideal.

Megadeth were joined onstage by former lead guitarist Marty Friedman for the first time in 23 years during the band’s February 27th concert at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo.
Tens songs into the set, a video montage played showing footage of Friedman, before frontman Dave Mustaine introduced his former bandmate to the stage during the opening to “Countdown to Extinction”: “Ladies and gentleman, please welcome my good friend and lead guitar player, Marty Friedman.”
Mustaine, Friedman, and current lead player Kiko Loureiro then formed a triple-axe attack, barreling through Friedman-era staples “Countdown to Extinction,” “Tornado of Souls,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” As if no time had passed, Friedman was a seamless fit in Megadeth’s current lineup, unleashing the many riffs and solos he originally wrote for those songs.
A particularly poignant moment occurred during the extended instrumental section of “Tornado of Souls” — often considered Friedman’s finest achievement with Megadeth.

Megadeth will welcome back their former guitarist Marty Friedman for a special February 27th show at the famous Budokan Arena in Tokyo that will be live-streamed worldwide. It will mark the legendary thrash metal band’s first performance with Friedman in 23 years.
After exiting Megadeth in 2000, Friedman moved to Japan a couple years later, where he has continued to record music and has become a television personality. During his decade-long stint in Megadeth, the guitar virtuoso played on classic albums Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction, among others.
“Marty and I have remained friends over 23 years, since we last played together,” stated Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine. “However, I hear his music every night, and he still is among the top guitar players I’ve ever heard. This is an amazing treat for the fans, as well as myself. I am going to enjoy this as much as the fans are,...

In the six years since Megadeth released their last album, Dystopia, Dave Mustaine has survived a cancer scare, a global pandemic, and his 60th birthday. This summer, the steadfast speed-metal pioneers will put out its 16th album, The Sick, the Dying … and the Dead!, a typically breakneck thrashathon that musicians a third of Mustaine’s age would struggle to keep up with.
Did Mustaine have any reservations about the album title, a Black Plague reference he picked before Covid-19 became the new plague? “No,” he says on a Zoom from Switzerland,...

When Lamb of God decided to cover “Wake Up Dead,” the blistering thrash odyssey their tourmates Megadeth released in 1986, they asked themselves how they could make it bigger. So they decided just to ask Megadeth to record it with them. Their new recording of the song features the five members of Lamb of God with additional vocals and guitar parts by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine and cameos by the rest of his band.

A cadre of music’s heaviest hitters will lead the Grammy Music Education Coalition’s nine-hour fundraising telethon, dubbed Oh Say Can You Stream, on Saturday.
Alice Cooper, Dmc and host Megadeth’s David Ellefson will all make appearances during the broadcast, which will take place at 4 p.m. Et on several online channels. Proceeds will benefit the School’s Out initiative — which offers online lessons, instruments and gear to children and aspiring musicians during this period where school is literally out because of the coronavirus pandemic — as well as Covid-19 relief charities.

Megadeth has canceled the majority of their upcoming tour following singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine’s throat cancer diagnosis.
“I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on — but I’ve faced obstacles before,” Mustaine, 57, wrote on the hard rock band’s website Monday. “I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate. Treatment has already begun.
“Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. Megadeth will be back on the road Asap,” he continued.
